2021 NGSPA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Greetings From the NGSPA Board of Trustees (BOT);

Merry Christmas from the NGSPA BOT!

The purpose of this preview is to give all of you a quick look at how things are shaping up for the National Championships in 2021 and to en courage all of you to let us know if you have ideas to make the Nationals better.

As this “Preview is being written, the State of Missouri is currently under no COVID-19 restrictions that would prevent holding our 2021 National Championships and planning/preparations for the Nationals continues.

The following Covid 19 information is quoted from State of Missouri information applicable to Wright County (the County where Grovespring is located). The Nationals Committee will continue to monitor National, State and Local COVID-19 restrictions/advisories and, if we receive information applicable to running the National Championships, we will publish necessary changes on the NGSPA website (E).

STATE OF MISSOURI PUBLIC HEALTH WARING Michael L Parson, Governor

The country is currently experiencing an extreme outbreak of COVID-19. As we move from fall into the winter months, respiratory illnesses spread more rapidly as people move indoors and environmental conditions change. COVID-19 is following that pattern. The risks will become. More serious with the onset of flu season. Every state is affected. Every community is at risk.

If we do not slow the spread of the virus, we risk having our health care systems overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients. This poses a significant risk not only to those suffering from COVID-19, our first responders, and those working in our healthcare systems, but to anyone requiring health care support. This includes people requiring emergency services and ICU access from car accidents to treatment of serious health conditions such as cancer.

We will continue to take a balanced approach to Missouri’s COVID-19 response. Our approach is data-driven and based upon the most recent research. We have learned much since the start of the pandemic about how to live and work responsibly in the COVID-19 environment. Until a vaccine is made available to the general population in 2021, the most effective weapon of COVID-19 remains prevention.

PREVIEW #2

JANUARY 2021 5

We do not need to lockdown our communities if people do the right things to fight the spread of the virus.

Due to extreme COVID-19 risks, the State of Missouri issues the following public health warning to set expectations for all individuals living and/or working in Missouri and for our local jurisdictions.

Personal Behavior Advisory

The foundation for our success in fighting COVID-19 remains individuals doing the right thing. To protect our families, our neighbors, our communities, and our ability to continue our daily lives, we need everyone who is able, to follow these basic principles:

• Wear a mask at all times in public and other settings outside your home where social distancing is not possible.

• Maintain social distance of at least 6 meet wherever possible, and limit close contacts with other individuals to less than 15 minutes/.

• Wash hands multiple times a day.

• Stay home when sick or if you have symptoms. Self-isolate from other family members.

• As much as possible, limit your regular interactions to a small group (<10) of family members.

The Nationals Committee will be publishing additional information, as necessary. At this time, the Committee is holding off opening the online entry system and publishing the American Field ad. Currently, all dates, times, qualification standards, judges, etcetera contained in Preview #1 are still valid - changes, if necessary, will be published on the NGSPA website ( ).

SUGGESTIONS: The BOT takes the running of the National Championships very seriously and is doing everything they can to make the Championships a success but, in the end, the Championships belong to the participants. If you have suggestions, we welcome them.

UPCOMING PREVIEWS: We will be sending out several more 2021 NGSPA National Championship Previews. They will be published one the NGSPA Website (ngspa.org) and in the NGSPA Newsletter.

BIRD DOG HALL OF FAME2020 INDUCTEES - PEOPLE

ROBERT HOLCOMB

August 26, 1926 - May 31, 1990 Served 23 years in US Army, Rank Master Sergeant Awarded Purple Heart in combat in WWII

Robert “Bob” Holcomb started his important contributions to the German Shorthaired Pointer world while serving in the US Army, in the occupation forces in Germany during WWII.

After graduating from high school, in Poulsbo, WA, Bob was accepted to study in the veterinarian school at WSU by elected to enlist in the US Army and was sent to German in October 1944. After recovering from a rifle fire combat wound, for which he received the Purple Heart award, he was assigned to the Army Veterinary Service. He spent the remainder of his first enlistment time in Germany supporting veterinary care and treatment of horses, mules and dogs from US forces and local German residents. His final duty order was in caring for and treatment of rescued blooded German horses that were transported to the US. Many of these may have been the legendary Lipizzaner stallions rescued in the infamous US Army “Operation Cowboy”.

During these last months, in the now occupation period of WWII, Holcomb

Robert Holcomb

JANUARY 2021

travelled over large areas of Germany treating local horses and dogs. His access to German estates and hunting clubs provided Bob with direct contact with functioning kennels with active dog trainers and game stewards. The hunting skills of these German Shorthaired Pointers and their versatility and trainability really impressed TSgt Holcomb. These experiences and impressions of the value and importance of this breed were held for the rest of Bob’s life.

While traveling with the Veterinary Services, Bob saw his future wife, Ottie, doing hunter-jumper training, and became close friends with her and her family. Bob’s first love was horses, until that time.

After his discharge, Bob Holcomb returned to the US and attended WSU Veterinary School for a few months but missed the army life and re-enlisted in the spring of 1947. Bob was now married to Ottie and his duties now only included procurement of food for the US Army on the West Coast.Stationed in central California at Fort Ord, Holcomb became an important developer of GSP’s for the early developing field trial competition and for hunting companions. He recognized the superlative qualities of Greif vom Hundscheimerkogle and bred his personal Betina v Schwarenberg to Greif and kept a pup, Yunga von Hundscheimerkogle, for his own training and field trial competition. Yunga became Bob’s first field trial champion.

Bob eagerly pushed other GSP associates to breed to Greif, even though he was not a field trial champion, yet. This wisdom held true as Greif became one of the Top GSP sires in the USA.

During the early 1950’s Holcomb’s US Army connections proved to be helpful in arranging

the importation of dozens of GSP’s to people in California, like Don Miner of Von Thalberg’s Kennel and to Washington for Ralph Parks, the first president of the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America. Another promoted breeding by Bob was for FC Karin v Greif to be bred to his Young, also a Greif offspring. That breeding produced DC (US/Can) Gretchen v Greif for Ralph Parks.

In the late 1950’s Bob re-upped with the US Army and returned to Germany with his family and continued his service in the Veterinary Service procuring beef for US bases. In this role, he increased his involvement with German Shorthaired Pointers. His primary contact was Mr. Ernst Bleckmann, owner of the original von den RADBACH Kennel. Bob stayed at the kennel estate and trained with the German trainers. He was respected enough for his judging knowledge and training abilities that he was taken into the prestigious Club Deutsh Kurzhaar. Bob was one of the very few Americans that were ever asked to judge field trials in Germany. From these experiences, he watched and picked many great dogs to be sent toAmerica, several of these have been named into the GSPC of America Hall of Fame.

When MSgt Holcomb returned to the US in the early 1960’s he arranged importing several of Bleckmann’s RADBACHS which became the foundation dogs for his kennel in Auburn, WA, which he called RADBACH kennels. Lutz von dam Radbach, though owned by Mr. Alvin Schwager, lived at the Holcomb residence most of his life. Lutz was inducted into the GSPCA Hall of Fame as the top producing sire of field trial and Dual Champions. Bob was officially a professional trainer at that time.

On the Northwest field trial circuit, Bob always had a truck full of totally broke dogs, mostly his GSP’s., that always showed lots of style and

JANUARY 2021

manners. He was the man to beat for a couple of decades. Bob trained and handled more than 100 dogs to field trial championship titles. He dominated the Northwest Field Trial Council’s “Dog of the Year” awards in the 1960’s and 1970’s. His import arranged FC/AFC Radbach’s B imho, owned by Bill and Helen Peters, and inducted into the. GSPCA “Hall of Fame”, won the Dog of the Year five years in a row.

The current Dog of the Year Trophy, awarded by the Northwest Field Trial Council, is given as a memorial to Bob’s field trial accomplishments during his life.

Racehorses were Bob Holcomb’s first love. A the age of 14, in 1j939, Bob was a jockey while his family lived in Ohio. He won a few races in Beulah Park, OH and went with a racing string to Havana, Cuba. Teenaged growth soon put him out of this profession.

At the Auburn, WA kennel and home, Bob and Ottie also breed and raised a few thoroughbred horses and ran them locally at the Longacre’s racetrack in Renton, WA. Their best achievement was a mare called “Shooting Pitch” who was hon red as Washington’s Top Older Filly & Mare Division in 1986.

Bob insisted that his dog training clients join the local GSP clubs and put back into the field trial sport what they have received. He also insisted they attend his training sessions and learn how to properly handle their dogs in the field. For his entire training life, Bob supported local GSP clubs and helped to start both the GSP Club of California and Washington. Many of Bob’s clients started the Northwest Field Trial. Council, which included clubs for all pointing breeds in WA, OR, and BC, Canada. The Council and some of Bob’s other clients helped obtain the Scatter Creek Public Wildlife

Area for use by all field trailers and hunters alike.

If Bob Holcomb had not developed this true love of German Shorthaired Pointers, while under the tutelage of German masters, the breed surely would not be the same today.
