Green Zipper
If a tall building is a city in the sky, it needs gardens just as a city needs parks. A green vertical zipper will bind a garden together with the public realm. It seeks to create a sense of community that transforms our experience of the workplace.
That may mean breaking down a large fl oor space into smaller groups to provide a feeling of identity and a social focus. The zip-per suggests open, fl exible working environments in which communication can fl ourish.
More natural light can enrich a space. It can change our perceptions – it can lift our spirits. Environmentally, it will work as a lung, driving natural ventilation systems to reduce energy needs.

On top, a Green Garden is proposed. This will,
besides extra offi ce space, function as a green

Green Zipper
At the top of the building a Green Garden is located. This serves as the
building’s green battery. This is a laboratory for present and future
energy production, created through bioreactor facades. The facades
consists of micro algae which exposed for sunlight to produce green
energy.
The energizing algae facade uses the latest fi ndings in energy and environ-mental technologies. Combined with geothermal and solar thermal heat-ing it creates a holistic concept of regenerative energy.
Microalgae: Smart energy bundle
Energy production with algae is a new and equally exciting fi eld of energy and environmental technology. Microalgae are tiny plants - mostly no larg-er than bacteria - which use sunlight to generate nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus biomass alongside with CO2
The algae are grown in the intelligent bioreactor façade, through photo-synthesis transforming lower energy materials into energy-rich matter. Under optimal conditions, they divide twice a day, from which new organ-isms arise for energy.
The proverbial bundle of energy is friendly to producers of renewable energy resources. In a biogas plant, located in the Green Garden, the har-vested biomass, methane is obtained and then dried. This matter can then be used as fuel gas or the operation of engines. Simultaneously heat is
generated, which can be used in the building.
In short, CO2 storage on the Biomass, methane is extracted from the biomass as a renewable energy source, simultaneously heat is produced, which can be used in the building. Finally the bioreactors are used to control 1)light and shade, 2) the heat and cold protection, 3) and the sound insulation.
Within the buiding, the facade runs through the fi nal crater of the Green Zipper, and works as a bioreactor. Plate-shaped panels are placed in the cavity that is necessary for circulating the cultivation of algae culture medi-um. The panels are one story high and 60 centimeters wide and connected together to form clusters, and powered by separate circuits. The necessary supply lines runs alongside the edges of each cluster, integrated in a 30 cm wide space between the outer wall and the bioreactor.
The water cycle
The algae are continuously supplied with liquid nutrients and CO2. A constant mixing of the water in the collector is done by large air bubbles. Using solar power, the algae then multiply until they are ultimately for-warded to the harvest in the technology space in top of the building (Green Garden). The micro-algae can be separated from the culture me-dium, resulting in a thick porridge made from algae biomass. The culture medium is fed back into the circuit and fl ows into a holding tank, where it can be stored at fi ve degrees for a few days. For the recovery of biogas, the external micro plants can be used further.

Green is not just green
Changes depending on dosage of the growth substances sets the color intensity to the bioreactor facade. That means Oslo can sit and watch the future in the production of “bioenergy”.
A facade, many tasks
At the fl oor of the Green Garden, an algae-resturant is located (obviously serving algae-related food) Here the visitors can fol-low the progress of the aenergy-producing cycle, as the facade changes from light green to dark, green. The facade also it serves as sound insulation in the crater of the Green Zipper, and pro-vides shade in bright sunlight.
great potential
It make sense to use facade bioreactor for regenerative energy, while contributing to minimize CO2 emissions in the moderniza-tion of existing buildings, which in addition have an artistic ap-preciation.
Together with the photovoltaic technology, this system could replace solar thermal absorbers for housing intended market.
In BG14, the vision is that the replacable panels in the internal facade easily can be replaced by algae-panels, as the technol-ogy developes, and thus create a living facade starting from light green, turning dark, harvested and then all over again. A literally green building!
Green image for businesses
In the area of commercial property the implementation as cold facade for energy production can also function as spandrel pan-els or sun blinds. The heat can contribute to cold pumps for air conditioning / ventilation of the offi ce space. In this way, compa-nies makes a contribution to reducing CO2 emissions, active and visible to the environment and climate.
