Volume 11, No.2 5 March/April 2011

FROM THE PRESIDENT Brian Forde

Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early spring and that is good news for us Porschephiles. Our region has had good luck so far this new year and I for one am eager to get out and stretch my legs with a tour or a car show or two.

Preparing for the upcoming season now can make all the difference later when attending events. Survey the calendar enclosed in this newsletter to plan ahead for the events which are of interest to you and mark them down on your schedule now, so that they do not creep up on you as the season progresses. A commitment now will reduce conflicts later.

Think about what you may like to place in your car for your own comfort as well as the comfort of your passengers. Given the generous storage space in the front of my 911, I usually carry a long sleeve shirt, lawn chair, a spare towel or two, a roll of paper towels, a light blanket and an umbrella with me at all times. This forethought helps me to be flexible given the various weather conditions and activities that occur during car shows or other outdoor events.

Car care products are also important to keeping your car looking its best when attending events. You can stock up your car with various products for cleaning wheels and tires as well as bugs off windows and paint. You can store a spare towel in your car for wiping it down if showers are encountered.

Considering your own comfort and those around you can

help make events fun, but now how about your car? Have you taken an hour to go over it given its winter storage; checking tires, fluids, and battery? If you took steps before the holidays chances are your car will be ready without any major undertaking. Once out on the road you should con-sider stocking your car with a few items. A flashlight and a simple set of tools along with a set of Porsche appropriate jumper cables can be very helpful when things do not go as they should. Most of our cars came with tools at one time and having them with you can prevent your being stranded or on the flip side, can help others who are in need.

You would be surprised how many people update their car’s wheels and not think twice about the size of the lug nuts that were installed with their new wheels. Does your car have the correct lug wrench now? If not take steps to find out the correct size socket wrench and ratchet for your application. I carry a deep socket and extension along with breaker bar so that even if the lug nut is frozen onto the stud I have the leverage to remove it without straining my-self or damaging the car. Does your car have a locking lug to prevent theft? Do you keep the key in your car at all times? Do you know where it is now?

I ask these questions because I have the knack for proving Murphy’s Law. I assume that if anything is to go wrong it will happen to me in the darkest and rainiest void possible. Please take some time now and get the year off on the right foot so that every trip or event you take with your Porsche will be a happy one. If you have any thoughts or comments, please let me know at [email protected].

Volume 11, No.2 6 March/April 2011

FROM THE EDITOR: Gloria Mellon

From month to month, year to year, the members of our club have pitched in to produce this publication. It represents who we are as a car club. There are the recaps from events that have taken place since the last issue and a few memories and updates to boot. When you’re reading the newsletter, try to envision an experience you’ve had with your own car. Everyone wants to hear something new, especially the ones of us that contribute on a regular basis and although it might be a story you’ve told to other members, put it on paper (computer) and shoot it over to me. Most of us can recall the moment we decided to buy the

car...how long did you think or dream about it? What made you finally take the plunge? The first time you drove it, how did you feel? There are at least 141 of us that have a car buying experience. And in 7 years as a club, I think there have been less than 10 stories published. Everyone of us have had that experience. Even though I know how hard it is to share my car with someone, especially letting them drive, it’s a lot easier to write about the details and share it that way. My challenge to you is to send me an article. I will help you edit it (if needed) and make sure it tells the story you want. Until next time...

One way or another, I’m sure that this hammering our economy is taking has affected you. Belt tightening is common, anxiety creeps into conversations, and even if we’ve escaped it, the worst effects a lot of us. We still may put off spending some of those discretionary greenbacks as we wait and see if things will get even worse. However . . . (pregnant pause) . . . you and I are drawn together in sustaining a pure pleasure effort that the safe money would have bet against in a heartbeat, and we’re thriving.

No, this isn’t empty hyperbole, it’s real. For the first time ever, National PCA membership went over 57,000 members and Zone 6 led the pack by actually growing by four percent, gaining about 175 members. The WORST any of our fifteen regions did was lose a net one member. That’s pretty good for a club based on enjoying expensive cars in a time of economic crisis.

My combined travel itinerary has now taken me to visit each of our fifteen regions at least twice in the past two years, clicking off something around fifty thousand miles. I’ve been to small picnics, driver ed events, autocrosses, tours through mountains and along the Pacific, a couple of Parades, huge multi-region gatherings, and everything in between. I’ve not had a bad trip (and as a child of the sixties I should know what that is!!). Everywhere I’ve visited we enjoyed ourselves. We enjoyed our cars, we enjoyed our places, but most of all . . by FAR . . we enjoyed each other. Strangers became old friends, business cards were exchanged, Facebook friends were approved, and on and on.

If I’ve come away with any single impression it’s that the members who take the trouble to attend an event in another region are glad they did. At the Sun Peaks Escape in September we hosted 350 members from all over the continent, so many that the Canada West Region had to cut off

registrations months before the event itself. It wasn’t just another event, it was more like a celebration, all centered around some tours, a low key concours, and some great dinners. We simply had a superb time together and there was clearly a thirst for MORE. Sometimes, at some of the informal parties (often the best ones!) all we could talk about was how we could do more of this.

The formula is simple: find an interesting place, put together a loose schedule of activities, then get out of the way and let nature take its course. There’s a new multi-region event in Whitefish, Montana in early June (eight hours and a ferry ride from Bremerton) and PCA’s youngest region is in the early stages of making a bid for the PCA Escape a couple of years from now. I was in on the first conversation about the Whitefish event, and I’ll be presenting the Escape idea to my fellow Zone Reps in less than a week. There is every reason to believe that it could actually happen.

My point? Keep it up. Enjoy your unique combination of mountains and water and highways and people. Invite others. Attend their events. We’re doing something really good. Let’s make memories together.

Volume 11, No.2 7 March/April 2011

It was starting to seem like it would never happen, but on

Saturday, January 15, at just before 11:30 AM, we finally got the

call from our Porsche salesman at Barrier Porsche in Bellevue,

WA. Our new 2011 Cayenne Hybrid had finally arrived, was being

prepped and detailed and would be ready for us to pick up by late

afternoon.

We’d ordered the car on September 4th; the factory in Leipzig

started building it the first week of November; it was driven out of

the factory building on 11/12… and then…

Then it waited a couple of weeks before it went onboard a ship. It

was supposed to have come through the Panama Canal and arrived

in San Diego by year-end, but ended up disembarking in Georgia

and then going across country by train to San Diego… where it

waited yet again. Apparently, lots of snow all over the country had

caused shipping delays and created a shortage of car carriers

deemed Porsche-worthy. We heard on January 12 that it might

finally be on a truck, but by Saturday morning I’d given up hope

of seeing it that week. Then my phone rang!

Kurt had a rough week, with extreme “chemo fatigue” and a trip to

the emergency room with a high fever. We’d been cautioned to

look out for any signs of infection, as the chemo drugs have

weakened his immune system. Even with heavy-duty antibiotics, it

took several days to get his fever down. I could tell that he really

wasn’t up to the trip to Bellevue (3 hours each way) to pick up the

car, but neither one of us really wanted to wait any longer! So off

to Bellevue we went. I drove all the way there in a downpour.

We arrived just before 4:30 PM, which was when the car had been

expected back from detail, but they’d beaten us by just enough

time to put it inside the showroom for us. It is a TOTALLY COOL

experience to take delivery of a car on the showroom floor. Our

salesman, Stephen, spent well over an hour with us, walking us

through the multiple manuals and then demonstrating all the

buttons and switches that operate the actual bells and whistles on

the car. It was a hands-on learning experience for me, while Kurt

watched mostly from the back seat. By the time he’s feeling a little

better I should have a pretty good idea of how to work things and

I’ll be able to help him figure things out quickly, but I have no

doubt that he’ll be showing me a few new tricks soon enough.

The car has multiple displays, each of which can be separately

programmed, and at times it can seem like too much information

— especially when you are driving it for the first time, on an

unfamiliar freeway, in the dark, in the rain, with fast-moving

Seattle traffic all around. The next day I spent some time with it on

the much more peaceful, pastoral roads around Port Angeles and

Sequim, and I scrolled through some of the menu screens and

began to tailor things to my liking.

The hybrid technology on this car allows it to run on electric-only

both at low speeds (below 37 mph if you stay very light on the

throttle) and at highway speeds (if you back completely off the

throttle). Of course the gasoline engine comes on instantly when

you want it. The trip computer keeps track of “engine off” time in

addition to drive time. Driving around town it is possible to have

the gasoline engine off for more minutes than it’s on! The car is

designed to optimize fuel economy while still offering Porsche

speed and handling performance.

And did I mention that it is yellow? See it on page 2.

TECHNOLOGY ON THE ROAD by Bill Elwell

If you follow automotive news then you’ve probably heard that the EPA recently announced that it is safe for cars, model years 2007 and newer, to use a blend of fuel that is up to 15% ethanol (E15). This raised a lot of eyebrows in the industry. As automotive enthusiasts, this touches each of us. Read on.

I want to give you the full story about how we got to where we are today. Let’s start by rolling back the clocks. In the late 70’s, as lead was phased out of our gasoline, suppliers added chemicals called oxygenates to the gas we bought in order to boost octane levels.

Thanks to over 20 years of automotive emission controls, by the late 80’s US air quality in America had dramatically improved. But levels of carbon monoxide (CO) in some areas were still too high, particularly during the winter months. There were still a lot of carbureted cars on the road back then. Carburetors can’t control the air/fuel mixture very accurately and the result is air pollution. To address this, the government legislated he addition of oxygenates to the fuel supply in winter months. The oxygenate leaned out the air/fuel mixture a bit and reduced emissions.

Until the early 2000’s, the oxygenate of choice was a substance called methyl-tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE). Health and environmental concerns caused most states to ban the chemical. As MTBE was being phased out,

ethanol became the oxygenate of choice.

But wait just a second! Weren’t oxygenates intended to reduce pollution caused by carbureted cars? Aren’t the vast majority of cars on the road fuel injected? Yes, you’re absolutely right. As a matter of fact, in 2006 the federal government eliminated the federal oxygen mandate for reformulated fuels. So why do we still have ethanol in most of the gasoline we buy? Well, a lot of states still legislate that gasoline contain up to 10% ethanol. These regulations were a reaction to the high gas prices in 2008. The logic is that using more domestically produced ethanol reduces our dependence on foreign oil.

That brings us right up to last October when the EPA said that cars from model year 2007 and later could safely use a mix of 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline (E15). Then in January the EPA extended the announcement to include cars and light trucks from model year 2001 and later.

OK. So what? Do we really care about a little alcohol in our gas? If we’re talking about a mixture of up to 10% ethanol, then we probably don’t care (unless you own a car built before the mid 80’s – then you have to be very careful with ethanol in your gas). But if we’re talking about much more than 10% ethanol then we should care for a couple reasons.

Gas mileage is the first reason you might care. Ethanol contains 34% less energy per gallon than gasoline. As the amount of ethanol in your gas goes

up, your gas mileage goes down. OK, I’ll admit that the difference in gas mileage between E10 and E15 will be slim, but why go there if there isn’t a good reason?

The second reason that you should care about this is potential damage to your car. What the EPA said was that their testing shows that E15 didn’t damage “the emissions control equipment in newer cars…” They didn’t say it was safe for your whole car. Unless the materials in the fuel system and engine were designed to be compatible with ethanol, they will corrode when exposed to ethanol. We actually know quite well how ethanol can affect older cars. Since the late 70’s, Brazi l has been using a mixture of between 20% and 25% ethanol in their gasoline. The Brazilians learned a long time ago that concentrations of ethanol above 10% will damage many fuel system components.

Some of you may ask why I don’t mention higher food prices as a potential issue. In the US, most ethanol is made from corn. The argument is that increases in ethanol production will increase demand for corn and drive up prices. There are very good arguments on both sides of this issue, so I’m steering clear of it for now. As a note of interest, the Brazilians make their ethanol from sugar beets.

Why did the EPA take this action? The only people that lobbied for and supported the EPA’s actions around E15 are corn and ethanol producers. The list of organizations that oppose

E-15

TRACK & RACING INFO by Jeff Smith

Our local speed events have finally started up again. Even with many more mild and sunny days this winter it still seemed like a long off-season wait. Yes, on the good days you could take your Porsche out on the street for a little spirited driving. But, for those of us that are further along with what I call the ‘speed addiction curve’ there is no substitute for getting out on the track..

As this is the start of another season, I’ll mention for new readers that this column focuses primarily on local and Porsche centric track and competition events, and the people that participate. There are just too many events throughout the Northwest to list them all so we concentrate on events held at Bremerton by the various club, most of the PCA and SCCA events at Pacific Raceway in Kent, and the Northwest 944 Cup Series. Other local events can be included if there is enough interest - just let us know. As always you can go to the various club web sites and publications for details. Or ask one of us and we will assist or point you in the right direction.

There have already been two autocross practices at Bremerton and a PCA Driver Skills, also at Bremerton. Next up in March and April are several types of driver schools, the first track days and the first competitions.

This time of the year we have the most opportunities for driver training and schools I’ve ever seen. For those starting out or new drivers, there are Street Survival and Driver Skills. And I want to add the importance of the Street Survival Schools in March, they

are open to the public and filling up fast. One day is for teens and the other for adults. There have been a few of the members’ children that have taken this course and will tell you how much it has done to improve their driving skills. This class is not about turn signals and speed limits. It’s about knowing yourself and your car’s abilities.

For those that want to start or improve their performance and track driving there are Driver Education and track days. For those that are interested in starting competition, there are Autocross and Race schools. So you see there are no excuses, plenty of opportunities to learn and have fun.

For those seeking competition several series operate locally. Bremerton Sports Car Club(BSCC) has the Kitsap Kup, an autocross series with eight competitions from March through October. BSCC is very novice friendly, with two novice schools this year and several practices. Instructors are available at all regular events.

Pacific Northwest Region (PNWR) of PCA has an autocross series with nine competitions from March through October. PNWR is also novice friendly. They do not have formal schools but instructors are always available to assist at every event.

SCCA has Autocross, Time Trials and Racing at Bremerton and Pacific Raceway. In fact, SCCA has added a Club Trials and Track Trials at Pacific Raceway this year. This is a great opportunity if you ever wanted take your car out and try full speed

timed laps on that race track (Club Trials for autocross level prepped cars and Track Trials for race cars). They also will have two time trial events at Bremerton.

Northwest Chapter of the 944 Cup Series has an expanded the calendar this year with 14 local races at 5 different tracks from March to October and a National Championship Race in New Jersey. This is the fourth year of our chapter and looks to be the best ever. We are expecting new drivers and cars added to our ranks, but will have to wait and see how many. Growth is good because with higher car counts not only do we have more fun racing each other but we become more important to the racing organizations. Once we field enough cars consistently at every race we can lobby for our own race group and have more say about the rules we race under, etc. Think of that - a race field of nothing but 944s. Now that sounds like fun and a good show!

I am really looking forward to participating in the 944 Cup this year. We are building a good team. Our cars aren’t ready yet, but that’s how it goes. We’ll get there! There will certainly be lots of variety and challenges. We have new competitors to befriend and race with. Of course there is always the car set-up, mainte-nance and repairs. And what’s not to like about having five different tracks? Some of our weekends will have multiple races to keep us busy. And probably the most fun part will be having a points paying race at the German Touring Car Challenge!

According to the very scientific exercise of removing a groundhog from his burrow every February 2nd, Spring should come early this year. Naturally, this is a perfect excuse to have a huge party. Who doesn’t need some assistance to fight the winter blah and prepare for the driving season just around the next bend? Who better to come to the rescue in the off season than the Peninsula’s best motorsports destination? MAXRPM hosted Winter Wine & Dyno night on February 5th to help bring an end to the dismal January weather and get together with old friends, as well as make some new. The festive evening began with an appetizer reception, wine tasting and cocktails. Guests came from all over the greater Seattle area to join in the fun. Bob Chmelka of Race Technologies flew up from sunny Hermosa Beach, California to give an informative presentation about Brembo Brakes and the race technology that has filtered down for street use, much to the delight of horsepower junkies. When you add big horsepower, big brakes are necessary… for safety, of course. They also look great under wheel upgrades and the calipers come in different colors. Your wives will marvel at your newfound interest in safety accessories. Just remind them that it really is all about the shoes… and the safety. Furthermore, as Bob mentioned during the tech talk, Brembo brake kits actually weigh less than stock rotors and

calipers. A big brake upgrade is a great way to live up to that New Year’s resolution to lose a few pounds. In addition to the Brembo tech talk Travis Leonard of Gig Harbor Autoworks was on hand to show off a couple of cars and offer everyone the benefit of his car audio expertise. To show off a sample of Travis’ work Randy Bais-den from our own Olympic Peninsula Region brought his 996. Gig Harbor Autoworks has installed a Pioneer 7” touch screen along with a custom carbon fiber amp rack and subwoofer enclosure. Overall the evening was a great time, with the opportunity to sample some wine, mingle with friends and car aficionados, and to dance the night away. We are looking forward to a great driving season once warmer weather arrives. See you out on the road. Written by Maegen Sickler

MAXRPM Musings with Alex Raphael

Panda Inn January Dinner By Barbara Hanford

The “Year of the Rabbit” got off to an early start for OPR members who met for dinner on January 21. Although Bugs Bunny, the Easter Bunny and not even a Playboy Bunny were able to join us that didn’t deter us from enjoying our annual Chinese New Year dinner. Thirteen members enjoyed this year’s dinner at the Panda Inn in East Bremerton. Many of our members will recall the excellent food, fine service and good times we used to have at the Panda Inn on Kitsap Way before it closed. We were all pleased to find our old friends had consolidated their efforts at the East Bremerton location and are still offering our favorite menu items plus their popular Mongolian BBQ. With lots of encouragement I finally tried the BBQ and it’s now my new favorite. Selecting your own meat, vegetables and condiments from a wide range of choices, with plenty of advice from friends and the chef, added to the enjoyment of my meal. I highly recommend that everyone try it at least once. Also it’s a good deal for big eaters, all you can eat for dinner or a single large bowl for lunch…really big bowls. Thirteen of us cozily seated at a round table for ten made for some careful chopstick handling and tea pouring but no one got hurt fortunately. And yes, we did have fortune cookies with our meals. A highlight of the evening was looking around the table and realizing that almost everyone there was a Charter Member of OPR. No wonder we had so much to talk and laugh about…it was a family affair. After dinner our chef served us a delightful ice cream dessert creating a perfect ending to our thoroughly enjoyable evening. Next time you’re thinking about Chinese for lunch or dinner, check out the Panda Inn on Highway 303 at the Fred Meyer Mall or ask any member who attended. I’m sure they’ll “guarantee it”. Members who attended were Debbie Raphael, who arranged the dinner, and Alli, John and Suzanne James, Gloria Mellon, Brooks and Barb Hanford, Randy and Sandy Baisden, Brett and Diane Burroughs, Bill and Maryann Elwell.

Thanks very much to Debbie for putting it altogether!

Good news! Met with Tony Garmey of Horizon Racing. We are on for

March 26th at the Hart Auto Barn in Carnation.

While there are not a lot of vehicles from a quantitative perspective, the quality and variety are high and the garage is a killer. Plus the surrounding scenery is quite nice with neat roads. The goal will be to arrive there at 11:00 AM. Stay for an hour or two, head back into one of the local villages for lunch and tour back to the Peninsula.

Considering we moved the Annual Chili Cook-off from

March to February 20th, we were extremely lucky to have a

dry, sunny day, even if it was a bit chilly. Along with the

sun, came a multitude of Porsches to fill our driveway end

to end. There was a Cayman, some classic 911s, my C4, a

924, a 928 and a couple of Carreras. We were very happy

that the weather held out, so everyone could bring their cars

out to the event. The guys spent most of the day out front

admiring all the cars and swapping stories about their cars

and the work they had done to restore and customize their

Porsches.

It was great to see some friends we hadn’t seen for a while

and get to meet a lovely PNWR couple from Gig Harbor.

Hopefully we can get Jacek and Anna to change over to the

OPR region. After we snacked on chips, salsa, guacamole,

and drank Mexican beer and margaritas it was time to start

tasting the chili contenders. Keeping with the variety

theme, we had a wide array of chili’s as well. There were

several turkey varieties including ours made with smoked

turkey. We had a few standards with ground beef and even

a steak chili. There were eight competitors in all.

Thank you Diana for bringing the pasta to help quell the

burn, because some of those chili’s were really hot! We had

all the fixin’s like corn bread, corn waffles, several varieties

of cheese, cilantro, onions, sour cream, and hot peppers.

Brian and Debbie both made some great guacamole, which

also helped put out the fire in my mouth. After, trying all

eight varieties it was time to vote. My personal favorite was

made by John and Susie James, although they didn’t win a

prize. My husband Bill was so busy socializing that he

forgot to vote at all.

Alex’s daughter Alli Raphael agreed to be our voting

official and tally up the ballots. We gathered everyone to-

gether around the piano and dining room, so President Brian

Forde could announce the winners. Third prize went to a

chili that was made by PNWR members, Jacek and Anna

Filutowski. Second place went to a terrific chili that was

made by Diana and Michael Kingsley. In actuality, there

was really a four way tie for 2nd place, so we had draw num-

bers to pick the 2nd and 3rd place winners. That just goes to

show how tough the competition really was this year. The

coveted first prize toilet seat, went to Kip Sparber again for

his white chili. This is the second year in a row that he’s

taken first place. Way to go Kip!

Then there were the desserts that were to die for. My

favorite had to be Arlene’s coconut and chocolate brownies,

but her fruit & nut bars and chocolate chip cooks were

fantastic as well. Bill on the other hand, couldn’t get

enough of Anna’s home-made apple pie. Thanks to

everyone who attended and for bringing chili, corn bread,

salsa, guacamole, toppings, and desserts and for all of the

help throughout the day that made things go smoothly for

Bill and me. We can’t wait for next year’s event.

Porsche Parade Portland in 2006 was one of the most fun experiences I have ever had. The huge concours on the golf course on a bright sunny day was spectacular. The chance to drive a brand new Cayman S at Portland International Raceways (compliments of Michelin) was a real privilege, and partying with our Porsche Club friends there every night was really a lot of fun.

One of the favorite events we participated in was the PCA Oregon Coast Driving Tour. We assembled for the driving tour bright and early one morning in a nearby supermarket parking lot. Over 60 beautiful Porsches ranging from an immaculate white late 50's 356 Cabrio all the way up to two brand new Carrera GTs(!!!!)… And just about everything in between.

When we were all checked in and accounted for, the tour departed. Winding its way on a circuitous route along waterways and bridges we had never seen before, and through the burbs northwest of Portland, heading West for our ultimate destination: beautiful Ecola Beach State Park, just north of Cannon Beach. The straight sections of road had some very fast potential and the pace picked up as we reached them. The faster cars in the back were now able to pass. At one point, I had a Carrera GT directly in front of me and a Carrera GT right behind me, the noise can only be described as "a Formula One Sound Track" as they both took off like Han Solo hitting light speed when the passing lane opened up. It was an awesome display of exotic high technology as they left us like we were sitting still. Interestingly: in Washington for example, there is no legal speed limit when you are passing a slower car on a two lane highway. As long as you use what you believe is a prudent and appropriate passing speed under the circumstances and return to your original lane in a prompt and safe manner, then returning to posted speed limits, it is all perfectly legal . Even if its 50 to 160mph and back to 60 again in less than 12 seconds. I bet you didn't know that.

But I digressed. The tour continued over hill and over dale, some 4 lane sections sorted out the cars into 3 basic groups: Really Fast....Fast...and Touring.... We ended up back in the touring group, a bit worried about getting another ticket... one car following us was a beautifully restored Orange 914-6 driven all the way from Portland, Maine by a nice 30 something couple. Their 914-6 was running perfectly, but was not as fast as our 160 HP 2.5 Liter 924S, especially climbing in the hills. As we reached the halfway point in our journey west, the roads got narrower and the trees got much bigger...then the sky turned dark...and it started raining.......

I remembered that both Carrera GTs had their tops down when we left Portland and wondered how they would fare in this rain squall.... Low and behold, around the next bend.. there they were....pulled over on the shoulder.... The club’s "chase car" had just caught up with them and the crews were frantically pulling out their tool kits to re-install their tops in the pouring rain....I closed my "Tip Up" electric sunroof smoothly with a push of a button in 6 seconds… and cruised past about $900,000 dollars worth of Porsches rapidly filling with rainwater...they might be faster...but we were certainly drier.

The tour continued to a highway rest area and all the P-cars pulled in there en masse to the amazement of bystanders, and we all compared notes on our trip so far… As we headed back out, the weather improved nicely as we approached the coast, the views became more spectacular and the road became real sports car territory. We had the great fortune to be following the cream colored 356 Cabrio those last few miles to the Coast. The driver was a professional photographer and had several very nice old leather suitcases strapped to the rear luggage rack, decorated with old European travel stickers. He was going surprisingly fast. It was a very pretty sight to be following that beautiful old Porsche on the Oregon Coast. All of the PCA cars on the tour eventually gathered together in a long line as we slowed down and took the final winding serpentine access road along the ocean bluffs down into Ecola State Park to our final destination: A nice roomy meadow and parking lot on a high cliff overlooking Cannon Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The sweeping view was spectacular and everyone was quite pleased with our final destination. The local caterers had a large mobile BBQ trailer and fed us a very fine lunch as we all enjoyed the nice weather in a stunningly beautiful setting.

It was an extremely well planned Porsche Parade tour and it was one of the high points of the Porsche Parade that week. We had a great time. It was a perfect Porsche day!

As we move into Spring the weather should be improving, so those of us who don’t like to take our Porsche’s out in the rain should be able to drive them more and more. I want to thank Debbie Raphael for putting together our Chinese New Year dinner at the Panda Inn in Bremerton on January 21st. We had a nice turnout and great time hanging out with friends and the food was really good, especially the all you can Mongolian Grill buffet. Our group was even treated to the owners special ice cream fried up in an eggroll, boy were they good! Although it wasn’t a club event, a number of our members enjoyed a Wine & Dyno night in February hosted by Debbie and Alex Raphael at MAXRPM with technical sessions put on by a Brembo brakes distributor and a car stereo demo by one of our club sponsors, Gig Harbor Auto Works. Also thanks to all those who made chili, cornbread and desserts for our 7th Annual Chili Cookoff. As usual everyone enjoyed trying all the different chili recipes. Congratulations to this year’s winners: Kip Sparber took 1st place, Diana & Michael Kingsley came in 2nd place and Jacek and Anna Filutowski. came in 3rd place!

In addition to our monthly Membership/Board meetings the 2nd Wednesday of the month, we have quite a variety of other events coming up to get everyone involved. On Saturday March 19th, our annual Movie Night will take place at a new location this year. JR & Tina Leaman will host this year’s surprise movie at the Brownsville Marina Yacht Club on the evening of March 19th. Earlier that day we again will team up with the Glass Odyssey Corvette Club to show off our cars for a local cub scout pack at their Pine Wood Derby in Silverdale. If bringing joy to kids floats your boat, then I recommend that you bring your Porsche out to the Silverdale Lutheran Church for this event. We don’t want to be shown up by the Corvettes. Also coming on March 26th is our first tour for the year that John James and Bill Elwell are working on for us to see a neat car collection in Carnation. It will be a good excuse to get our cars out for a run.

On April 1st – 3rd we have our first weekend long tour planned to Astoria, OR. Kevin Strilcov and Judy Berrian have a terrific lineup planned for us starting with lunch in

Long Beach, then some fun roads enroute to Astoria. If you plan to attend please make your hotel reservations soon by calling the Comfort Suites Columbia River at (503) 325-2000. Mention the Porsche Club block of rooms reserved under Kevin Strilcov’s name to get our group rate of $89.99/night + tax for a King room. Also on tap for April is a dinner on the 15th at Los Cabos Grill Mexican restaurant being planned by Brett Burroughs.

In May we will again be participating in the Bremerton Armed Forces Day Parade in Bremerton on Saturday May 21st, so sign up and support our local military members and their families. Gloria Mellon will again host a BBQ at her house in Bremerton following the parade. Randy Baisden is also putting together a Spring Tech Session at Gig Harbor Auto Works and East Bay Collision with a BBQ lunch to follow. More details for these and other events can be found on our calendar page in the newsletter or on our website at www.opr-pca.org.

If you plan to attend the PCA Parade 2011 in Savannah, GA July 31st – August 6th, note that registration opens on 3/8/11. For more information and tips to review before registration starts, visit their website at http://parade2011.pca.org/registration.html. Also since the Parade is on the east coast, that means the Escape this year will be on the west coast. Escape 2011 is taking place September 15th – 18th in Flagstaff, AZ. Registration will be opening on April 20th; for more information visit their website at http://escape2011.com/home

Did you know that you can earn points by chairing and attending OPR events, writing articles and submitting photos for the newsletter/website, getting a new member to join, and getting a new advertiser for the newsletter? Several years ago, a number of us accompanied the Glass Odyssey Corvette Club to see the North American Eagle Shop down in Spanaway. I receive this note from Dave Ellingson with this update:

Here is an article that just appeared about the North American Eagle and its attempt to break the land speed record. GOCC has visited their shop twice and watched as they continuously improved the chassis, engine and aerodynamics.

The Bloodhound SSC effort may have the goal of 1,000 MPH in mind, but it’s certainly not the only team that is currently working to break the world land-speed record. Aside from two Australian teams – the Silver Bullet-RV1 project and the Aussie Invader 5R project – the Washington state-based North American Eagle team aims to take that record away from the Brits by topping the 800 MPH mark, and they hope to make their record runs later this year.

Project Manager Ed Shadle said that while the team continues to run computational fluid dynamics analyses of the shock waves they anticipate at that speed with their converted Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, he expects to make some test runs up to 600 MPH at Edwards Air Force Base in California in July, then possibly make the record runs in October.

Where he plans to make the record runs, though, remains up in the air. Ed said the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, where he and the team have tested the Eagle in the past, isn’t adequate for their purposes due to its uneven surface and overcrowding from campers. The course at Edwards, at 11.5 miles, is too short for their runs, so Ed hopes to reach an agreement with the Bureau of Land

Management in Nevada to run at Diamond Valley in central Nevada, which offers a 15-mile stretch of flat and uninterrupted land.

“We’re battling the two biggest hurdles, money (no title sponsor) and mother nature,” Ed said. “The car is pretty much ready to go.”

As for the 1,000 MPH mark, Ed said he’ll reassess his goals after that becomes a reality.

“They (Bloodhound and the two Australian teams) have a very tall order with very high risk, so I don’t believe it will be an overnight success for them,” he said. “They are a very tenacious bunch and I expect them to give it a go as soon as possible, probably within two years.”

The current world land-speed record stands at 763.035 MPH, set by Andy Green at Black Rock in 1997. The last American to hold the land-speed record was Gary Gabelich, who set the record at 622.407 MPH in 1970 and held it for the next thirteen years.

TECHNOLOGY ON THE ROAD Continued from page 8

this action is rather long and includes everyone from

consumers of corn products (concerned about higher corn

prices) to automotive and marine engine manufactures

(concerned about warranty costs from engine damage).

Petitions have been made and lawsuits filed.

Frankly, I’ll bet that when the dust settles, nothing much

will happen at all as a result of the EPA announcements.

First, the announcements carry no regulatory weight. The

EPA can’t force gas stations t o sell E15. Second, oil

companies aren’t thrilled about E15. Most gas stations are

setup for two or three octane grades plus diesel. How

would they add one or more E15 grades of fuel at the

pump? They can’t. Even if they did manage to figure out

how to offer both E10 and E15 at the pump, there is no

system today that would prevent someone from putting

E15 into a car that can’t handle it.

OLYMPIC PENINSULA REGION—PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA Board Meeting Minutes— January 12, 2011

Bill & Mary Beth Kobs — Bainbridge Island 2006 Silver Boxster

Transfer In: Jim & LaDonna Hughes — Gig Harbor 1978 Blue 911 Targa

Let me take this opportunity to welcome our newest members!! We are very glad you joined!

A Word About Membership by Gloria Mellon

This region was started on the premise that no Porsche owner would be turned away no matter the status or condition of their car. We are an open arms club and appreciate any and all owners of Porsche vehicles. If you know of a family member, neighbor or co-worker that would benefit from what we have to offer, the obligation and commitment is yours to bring them to a function as a guest. There is no doubt that once they attend a gathering, most people get hooked. If that’s not enough to sway them, there are all the other attributes that make this a great organization.

As a small region, we are able to get to know each other on a more individual basis. Most times we have anywhere from 10 to 30% of the entire region attending functions. We come from all walks of life. Our age group spans 19 to 88. Some are in school, working, in the military and many are lucky enough to be retired. We are a very personable and approachable group because of knowing those things about each other.

Have you ever had a problem with your car and needed input? You can send the issue to me and I will forward it out to the owners with the same model car and they will help you. There have been a number of instances within our 7 years of regionhood where members have taken advantage of that benefit and come away with a minimal to 0 out of pocket expense. I have never NOT had someone with an answer. Not once.

This is such a great region to which we belong. As a goal, we hope to increase membership annually. These past few years have been a struggle for many people but yet we’ve managed to hang on to our numbers. I would simply ask you to look around and invite these other Porsche owners that you see, to come to a club function. You know you know them, you know you see them. Give them an application and tell them to call me with any questions they have. Or you could get their name and phone number and I would be glad to give them a call too.

The diversity that carries with a group like ours gives weight to a long lasting region. The membership in an important part of our region. Let’s work together, keep our eyes open and grow our membership!
