Thank you for your business! We set both new sales records and much

larger shipping records for this past Spring. One reason we were able to

do so was the large volume of container stock shipped. Container stock

is basically ready to ship right from it’s growing area…. We only need to select and pack. Container stock has a more flexible planting schedule… you can hold the stock until bad weather clears or until the field is ready

to plant. Once in the ground, container stock starts growing sooner &

faster than bareroot. You will see even better results when you plant our

containers grown in the Plantable Peat Gallons or Quarts. No need to

remove the tree from the pots, just plant and watch them grow. Because

the fiber containers breathe air through the side walls, the trees put on

larger, stronger and more roots than if grown in plastic pots. This system

using the fiber pots is the fastest container growing system available and

the easiest to transplant due to the plantable pot. Try some today. You

will be amazed!

New product code explanation. We now have three codes for our Super Potted Liners. The code ending in PL01 signifies it is a first year potted plant and the code ending in PL02 is a plant that has been carried over for a second year. The second year plants will be a bit more robust.

The code ending in PL03 signifies it is potted in a 3 gallon size plastic pot. These plants are generally taller and have a bigger root system. They are best for pick up only as they are heavy and therefore shipping will be expensive.

New Pricing Alert! Our new 3 gallon program (code PL03) follows a different pricing structure

from the rest of our catalog!

When purchasing 3 gallon material, you will be charged the rate shown at each quantity tier up to its limit, progressing up the list as your volume in-creases. For example if you purchase 100, the first 50 will be at the 0-50 rate, the next 50 will be at the 51-100 rate. This pattern progresses up to each tier’s limit until reaching the 1000+ rate, at which point any additional quantities will earn the 1000+ rate.

Volume is cumulative throughout our fiscal year, with purchased quantities resetting to zero on August 1st. As an example, if you purchase 50 in the Fall, you will be charged the 0-50 rate. If you then purchase an additional 50 in the following Spring, you will receive the 51-100 rate.

This pricing system applies only to 3 gallon sizes and quantities do not apply toward the price tier discounts for any other sizes ordered.

What’s special about accelerated growth (a/g) Jiffy® Plugs?

What is an ‘accelerated growth’ plant? Our climate-controlled greenhouses, home to over 3 million plugs a year, is a special world. Regulated heat,

water, air, supplemental light, and nutrients optimize growing conditions 24/7. In just six months, Vans Pines’ a/g trees attain the size typical of a 2

or 3 year old field grown seedlings.

What are the advantages of a/g Jiffy® Plugs over Bareroot Seedlings?

Superior 360° lateral root systems that rapidly expand to anchor plants.

Amazing 1st season growth, often double to triple top height.

No transplant shock...superior survival… usually near 99%!

Vigorous growth quickly establishes plants to survive late season dry periods and tough sites.

Soft-walled, plantable plug containers deliver root protection during shipping, handling, and planting.

What plug size is best for me? Choosing a plug size to fit your site.

Many pine and spruce varieties have similar top size for the first growing season regardless of plug diameter. However, larger diameter plugs provide more room for root development. More root mass means more reserve en-ergy to thrive and better tolerate adverse conditions such as reforestation planting where irrigation is not available or where vegetative competition is expected. Larger plugs are also suggested for species that typically do not produce good root systems such as many true firs. Smaller plug diameters fit container production or field production where irrigation, fertilizer and weed control are provided. Choosing the same plug size for all species simplifies planter adjustments when using a mechanical transplanter or a Pottiputki planting tube. (Pottiputki sold on page 25)

NEW PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

Common Name: Hybrid Willow

Botanical Name: Salix matsudana x alba

Zone: 4-9 (hardy down to –20°F

Mature Height: 35-45 ft in rows, 50-75 ft alone

Mature Width: 20-30 ft

Sun: Full to Partial Incredibly fast growing, often 6 or more feet per

year, hardy to both hot and cold climates, disease resistant and capable of thriving in nearly any soil condition. The growth habit of Hybrid Willow al-lows for a full fence appearance, with foliage from the base to the top of the tree. While it is deciduous and will lose it foliage in winter, the profound amount of branching produced will still make for an effective windbreak or privacy row. With all of these factors considered, it is easy to see why Hy-brid Willow is a favorite for screening.

Common Name: Hybrid Poplar

Botanical Name: Populus deltoides x Populous nigra

Zone: 3-9 (hardy down to –30°F

Mature Height: 40-50 ft

Mature Width: 30 ft

Sun: Full This cottonless selection of a landscape favorite features lightning quick growth at up to 8 feet per year, tolerance to full sun and hardiness to most climates and soils found in the United States. Adored for it’s pleasing ovular shape that provides excellent shade in the summer, while allowing partial sun in the winter from its seasonal loss of foliage. This selection can be used as a temporary windbreak while slower growing plants establish, but is not recommended as a permanent installation. Hy-brid Poplar can be harvested for firewood in 5 to 7 years.

Tips for Working with a/g Jiffy® Plugs

We like fresh air! Upon arrival do not store plugs in unopened cartons for more than 5 days. Closed cartons encourage mold growth on the tops unless plants are stored between 28 and 32 degrees.

Keep our socks on! Do not ‘mess’ with the netting. It does not need to be removed and it will NOT interfere with root growth.

Pull the blanket up just right! Plant plugs so that the netting is covered with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of soil (no more)! If you plant deeper in heavy soils, you will kill the trees slowly over time as the crown line rots thus girdling the tree.

CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY

Below is a picture submitted by Bob Siwicki of Siwicki Nursery in Momence Illinois. He bought this Norway Spruce from Vans Pines back in 2016 as a 1 year 6-12” AG Jiffy plug. He then up potted it into a grow pot and let it grow for 3 years. This is just amazing growth both in top height and in the root system. Thank you for shar-ing this photo with us Bob!

Do you have a picture you can share with us? Email it to [email protected] along with a brief

description and we may include it in our next catalog.

Vans American Native Beach Grass

Established on the shores of the lakes throughout the Great Lakes Basin from Duluth, MN to Buffalo, NY this beach grass is widely spread out over many states. This beach grass has a yellow-green blade color. Overall, nursery produced beach grass is more vigorous than those collected from old strands. Vans American Beach Grass can be planted on the northern one half of the Atlantic coast and has been planted successfully on the pacific NW coast.

Vans ‘Cape’ American Beach Grass

This type of grass was selected from natural stands on Cape Cod, MA. The USDA, through its plant materials center, managed by the NRCS at Cape May NJ, spent many years developing the ‘Cape’ selection using the comparative observation evaluation process. After testing and evaluation, the selected grass was released to the public through commercial nurseries under the name of ‘Cape’ in recogni-tion of its place of origin. We started propagating the ‘Cape’ selection in 1973 and got our starter ‘Cape’ plants from the Cape May plant material center. This dune grass has more of blue-green blade color and a slightly wider blade. While the ‘Cape’ selection was specifically developed for the Atlantic coast from Maine to N. Carolina it also grows vigorously in the Great Lakes basin.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS

The Hemlocks arrived yesterday in great shape. I am very pleased with these

plants. They are the best I’ve ever gotten for this kind of planting. They are all hap-pily in the ground. I am thankful that I found Vans Pines—and that you had the

Hemlock I needed this spring. I will be recommending you to others.

Thanks so much,

Luke

I just wanted to say thanks for the delivered order. The trees look great.

Matt

I just wanted to thank you for the tour of your nursery. I was impressed to say the least. The trees I received were very well packed and in great condition. I was most impressed with their structure, nice spreading branches and lots of buds. We should be able to finish planting today. I am excited to see how well they grow. I am sure you will be hearing a lot from me in the future. Have a great day….

Frank

I have to say the trees we received from Van’s this fall were absolutely amazing! I only wish I had ordered all my trees from you over the past couple of years! The plugs

saved us half the time compared to bare root. What was even better was that we had

our 5 1/2 year old daughter and 2 1/2 year old twin boys out helping us plant. They

loved taking the plugs and putting them in the holes I had drilled! Loved having the

whole family involved. Thanks again!

Bryan

This was our first year in the tree farm business. Not only were the trees beyond

what we were expecting, but the customer service was above and beyond as well.

Thank you Vans Pines!

Chris and Lucy

We received the trees yesterday. Have planted half today and planning on

finishing up tomorrow. These are some of the best looking trees we’ve got-ten. Should have gone with the larger trees years ago.

Thanks for all your help,

Kathleen

This water retention aid has gelatinized, nontoxic starch that in-creases moisture retention of plants and soil. The small, dry flakes, when mixed with water, absorb and retain 200 times their weight… releasing and reabsorbing water for several months. Can be used to coat seed or plant roots prior to planting.

Tablets use soil bacteria action to convert the right amount of nutrients from the 18-9-9 Nitrogen, Phosphorus & Potassium For-mula plus additional trace elements for plant use in a natural healthy manner for up to two years. Excellent for feeding all ages of trees and shrubs in a wide range of soil and climate conditions. Caution—Do Not plant a/g Jiffy® Plug directly on top of fertilizer tablet.

Not only do you plant standing up, it’s more than twice as fast as conventional bareroot hand planting! Using a Pottiputki one per-son can plant 1,800-2,400 plug plants per day versus 700-800 bareroot plants. This important tool will last 15+ years.

POTTIPUTKI PLANTING TUBE

It extracts soil creating a hole the size of a 50mm plug ready for you to drop in the plug. Custom-built to prevent compaction of the sur-rounding soil, making it easier for roots to establish themselves. It works in difficult or heavy soil conditions where the Pottiputki may not.

PROPOGATION LIFE CYCLE

Our 1 year Conifer A/G® Jiffy® Plugs are seeded directly into 100 mm deep Jiffy® pellets of various diameters depending upon their future use. Once seeded, they are grown on for the balance of their first sea-son in our greenhouse or poly house range. Plugs are offered in 36mm and 50mm sizes.

We DO NOT recommend transplanting 1 year evergreen Jiffy® plugs directly into the field as they are not strong enough to compete with native vegetation or withstand a drought. Therefore, we will not enter-tain any claims for losses when transplanted in this manner. One year plugs are well suited for transplant beds where vegetation control and irrigation are provided or when transplanted into containers. We offer 2 year plugs for this very reason as they are specifically grown on for one more year so they can successfully be transplanted for open field production such as Christmas Trees or B&B, etc.

Our 2 year Conifer A/G® Jiffy® Plugs are 1 year plugs deliberately grown on a second year in 100mm deep Jiffy® plugs to accommodate the second year’s root growth without root crowding. These 36mm or 50mm Jiffy Plugs have larger-sized tops, plus heavier caliper and root mass than 1 year plugs.

Our 1 year Deciduous A/G® Jiffy® Plugs are seeded into 50 mm Jiffy® pellets and grown on for the bal-ance of their first season in our greenhouse or poly house range. They are recommended for field lining out and reforestation. They are typically over 12 inch-es tall and up to 3 foot with good caliper. They grow very quickly, staying well above the competition.

Page 27: Growing Your Business Faster...Monday—Thursday 8:00a-5:00p EST Friday 8:00a-4:30p EST Saturdays September 7—October 12 8:00a-12:00p EST LOCATION: 14731 Baldwin Street West Olive,

Vans Husky® transplants (plug+1) are grown in field beds using A/G® Jiffy® plugs. These plugs quickly develop an extensive lateral root system that pushes top growth to make them dou-ble their original top size. These transplants have such massive roots that most selections need to be root pruned (bottom 1/3 of roots) to make transplanting by machine or by hand easier.

Vans Jumbo Husky® transplants (plug+2) are the same trees as our Husky transplants only grown on for 1 more year. This second growing season produces larger tops, heavier caliper and increased root mass. These transplants are typically 1’ – 3’ tall depending on species. They require some root pruning (1/3 bottom of root) as the roots are as long as the tops are tall. Normally a hole with an 8” diameter or more will work and for a mechanical transplanter a shoe 4” or wider and at least 12” deep. While these transplants typically go thru transplant shock like all bare root stock, modest top growth of 4” – 10” can be expected under normal transplant conditions.

Our Super Potted Liners® and Premier Product Line are planted using our 1 year A/G® Jiffy® plugs. Most selections finish out the first season but the slower growing types (Nordmann & Turkish Fir, etc.) take 2 growing seasons before they have a saleable top size. Faster crop rotation and the near 100% survival rates are the 2 main reasons for using Vans Super Potted Liners® and Premier Product Line. Many growers claim they average 2 and sometimes 3 years less growing time to market size. Another feature is no transplant shock so the potted liners quickly root out into the surrounding soils & push fast top growth even in the first growing season. Also there is no rush to get them into the ground like bare root. You can take your time, weeks if neces-sary, to out plant. Our Super Potted Liners® and Premier Product Line are produced to grow on either in the field or another con-tainer. They are not intended for retail sales. We do not shear or shape them but let them grow naturally.

FAQ’S Q: Do you have to have a business or nursery license to order?

A: No, you do not. The only requirement we have is a minimum order of 50 trees. The 50 minimum can be reached by mixing and matching varieties and sizes.

Q: Do we have to pick up or can it be shipped?

A: You can come pick up or we ship via FedEx ground or freight depending on the size of the trees or quantity ordered. For really large quantities, we also have cus-tomers that arrange a third party service to come pick up their trees.

Q: Why do we need a 25% deposit?

A: The order does not get confirmed unless there is a deposit, therefore, we can not reserve the planned items for your order.

Q: When do we need to pay the balance?

A: The balance should be paid 6 weeks before shipping. We have not implemented this as much in the past but with our continued growth every year, we need the pay-ments sooner so we can stay ahead of planning and packing shipments.

Q: Why do we have to substitute what we have already reserved?

A: Remember we are dealing with live goods. Our product goes through 2 grading processes to ensure you receive the best quality plants. Depending on our growing season weather wise, sometimes our projected heights don't reach what we antici-pated. We try to let you know as soon as possible if there will be any substitutions.

Q: Can I change my order?

A: Yes, you can change your order. Our Sales Consultants can change orders as re-quested. However, when we are a week out from shipping it slows down the pro-cess and leaves room for error. Therefore we are asking that any changes on orders need to be completed 2 weeks before scheduled ship week. We can make changes to the ship week as the weather is the main deciding factor, but changes to quanti-ties and varieties can not be made if it’s less than 2 weeks prior to shipping.

Helpful Hints:

Always check the invoice sent to you to confirm we have the correct shipping ad-dress and ship week. If there have been any changes regarding your "ship to" ad-dress we need that information when you place the order.
