10.5 Energy supplies
Up until the mid-1700s people relied on...
...candles and oil lamps for lighting.
The candles were made of animal fat and the lamps used whale oil - they were all a bit smelly!

And then there was KING COAL!
When coal was mined in large quantities we could:
• Make large quantities of iron and steel
• Mine coal from deeper in the ground
• Improve transport with iron railways and iron ships that used steam power
• Make coal gas to power lights and cooking stoves
• Heat houses better

And then there was OIL!
When we found out how to refine crude oil into
• petrol
• diesel
• special fuel oils (like aircraft fuel)
steam engines gave way to lorries and cars.
Aeroplanes were invented and used these light powerful fuels.

Natural gas
Natural gas was found underground with or near oil.
Eventually huge pipelines were built to move this across seas and continents and it replaced coal gas.

Describe how coal is made without using words (maybe a mime).?
How would it be different for natural gas or oil?

10.5 Energy supplies
What came next?
And one of the most important uses of coal, oil and gas now is..
..making electricity.
Coal, oil and gas are burnt in power stations to turn water into steam, which turns turbines and generate electricity.

Nuclear energy
Nuclear power stations use fission in a controlled
way to generate electricity.
nuclear reactor
boiler
turbines
generator
national grid
Unfortunately, fission reactions create dangerous
radioactive waste products. Is nuclear energy renewable?
The process is similar to that used to
generate electricity from fossil fuels.

10.5 Energy supplies
But fossil fuels have some major problems.
One problem is that they don’t last for ever.
When the last drop of oil comes from the ground...
...and the last bucket of coal comes from a mine……
...what are we going to do?
Coal, oil and gas are known as non-renewable resources - we cannot renew them. Once they have run out, they are gone.
They aren’t making it any more!

Environmental effects of burning fossil fuels
Burning fossil fuels also
produces carbon dioxide
which is released into the
atmosphere.
Carbon dioxide is a
greenhouse gas.
Burning some fossil fuels creates chemicals
like sulfur dioxide, which cause acid rain.
Using fossil fuels to produce electricity has consequences
for the environment.

You have five minutes to prepare a presentation in the style of a news caster/reporter on whether you think coal or nuclear power stations are better.
