Using Help Window

In this section, you will have a description on how to use the Help Window.

Find the topic you want

When you are viewing the Help Window, click the tabs in the left frame to view the content of Help Window in a different way:

� Contents

Shows a list of main topics in Help Window. You can click the list to view a topic and and double click to view a sub-topic.

� Index

Shows a list of topics alphabetically. You can click the index entry to view the contents of a topic or type in the keyword to

find topics

� Search Search topics with specific keyswords. You can type in the keyword and click "List Topics" to search topics

Click the link in contents in Help Window to view related contents

Retrace your steps

Click the buttoms in the left top corner to retrace your steps in Help Window.

� Hide

Click the Hide button to hide the sidebar in the left of the Help Window.

� Show

Click the Show button to show the hidden sidebar after pressing Hide button.

� Back

Click the Back button to back to the previous topics you have visited.

� Print

Click the Prink button to print the selected topic or selected heading and all sub topics.

Search Tips

The following search tips may hep you to search topics in an effective way.

1. Find topics related to NoClone

As it is not an internet search machine, you may not find topics that are not related to Noclone.

2. Do not be too specific

The search machine may not find any topic with long keywords like "How to select duplicates with Smart Marker?". Instead,

"Smart Marker" is a better keyword to perform searching

3. Do not be too general

Searching with general keyword such as "NoClone" or "duplicates" may result in diplaying all topics in the Help Window.

"Duplicates with criteria" is a better keyword to perform searching

4. Just keyword The search machine only search all the words you type in without checking gramma. Therefore instead of searching with

keyword "Duplicates with criteria", "Duplicate criteria" is enough for the search machine to perform searching. But please

make sure that the keywords correctly.

Quick Start

This section shows you how to search your computer for duplicate files, truncated files, zero-size file, and same-

name files.

1. Select action template ("Exact-Content Duplicate Files as default")

2. Select folder by clicking [Browse...] or type in folder name

3. Click [Search] button to start the search.

4. Search result is shown, you can review files by selecting ( highlight) the file on the result panel and click

Review and choosing the action listed on the menu.

5. Click the check box or use [Smart Marker] located in Mark > Smart Marker to mark the file you want to

take action on it .

6. To remove files, click Action > Save Space , and follow the instructions stated on the screen

Search Duplicate Files - General Procedure

The general procedure in searching duplicate files are as follows:

1. Add search path

You can add file paths with criteria e.g. include sub-folder, file types, file size, exclude folder,

search against folders.

*For Home Edition, it is able to search at most 5 network drives in single search. For

Enterprise Edition, there is not limit on the no. of network drives to search in a time. See

more on Searching Duplicates Through Network

2. Select search options

You can select search types e.g. duplicates (same file content), same file name and search

options e.g. hidden folders and files.

3. Review search result

After search is completed, you should review search result to verify if they are duplicates by

previewing images, opening files and folders and view file properties.

4. Mark files for removal

There are 2 ways to do so:

1. Checking the boxes next to the files you want to take action on it manually.

2. Use "Smart Marker" for marking large number of files. Smart Marker allows to mark files

by date, size, file version, file name pattern and location .

5. Remove files

Files marked can be deleted (permanently or move to recycle bin), replaced by hard-link

(NTFS link), moved or copied to another folder. Files can also be renamed.

5 reasons to Use NoClone!

Scenario: Synchronizing USB thumb drive / mobile hard drive & My Documents in my desktop

1. Click â€œCompare foldersâ€ In Search Criteria

2. Browse folder(My documents folder e.g. C:\Users\CLAI\Desktop\My Documents ) ;

click Add button in Master file set

3. Browse folder (e.g. USB removal drive ) ;

click Add button in in File set 2

4. Click search

5. Search Result shows unique files and duplicate files regardless of folder structure. e.

What to do with these files then? You may move changed files (unique files) from USB thumb drive / mobile hard drive to your â€œMy Documentsâ€ folder in your desktop.op.

Similar Files / Grouping

Now you can scan for similar files instead of true byte-by-byte comparison to uncover more suspected duplicate files. This is powerful fuzzy match to enhance and replace "simple fuzzy match" and "truncated files" in previous version e.g. v3. This feature can check similarity between files regardless of file size.



NoClone 4.1 can check similarity between Office documents like Word doc but not down-sampled images and mp3 with different sampling rate.

Duplicate Email Remover (Outlook)

Duplicate email may not contribute much in reserving disk space, however duplicate email is indeed a problem that messes your email box up. Moreover sometimes send and receive problem will generate extra copy of email in your mail box, which are annoying and time consuming to tidy up. Features of email message comparison

1. The content in an email in MS Outlook are in terms of RTF,HTML or plain text. When our duplicate email remover compares content in the email, plain text is given the highest preference.RTF and HTML format are only used after the email message or a post couldn't be presented in the plain text format. In the processing of comparing, Space, hyphens and Tags are ignored by our email remover.

Searching duplicate outlook email is one of the new feature in NoClone since 2007.

You can customize the duplicate email definition by pressing "Define..."

After searching is completed, you can mark emails by "Smart Marker" depending on different criteria.

* Search Result

Search result

After search result is shown, duplicate, zero-size and same-name files are listed in the first three tabs. The last

tab is a report of files suspected to be duplicate but with read errors are listed.

There are a few columns in the search result, namely DupeGroupID, FolderPath, File Name, Size, Date modified ,

Single Instanced** and NTFSNumOfLinks**. As for the case of scanning duplicate MP3 file, a number of extra

columns will be display like Title, Album etc . DupeGroupID is the number assigned to a group of duplicate file,

DupeGroupID is meaningful to identify the duplicates they are in. You can mark a tick by clicking , you can then

delete(either replace by Hardlink*** , move to recycle bin or delete permanently)/move/copy marked files to a

specified location. Folder, file name, size and date modified columns show their respective properties.

* Duplicate files are uniquely grouped by DupeGroupID and different colours but not uniquely.

** SingleInstanced: Indicate weather the file has been hardlinked

Search duplicate files

To begin your search, you first have to specify folders and files that you want to search.

1. Select [Search template]



� Exact-content duplicate files: Search for duplicate files with same file content and extension

� Same name duplicate files: Search for duplicate files with same file name and extension

� Duplicate MP3: Search for duplicate MP3 files with same title and artist (album, comment etc can be

defined. See Define Report)

� Large Duplicate files: Search for same-content duplicate files with size larger than 1MB

� Large files: Search for files with size larger than 1MB

� Zero-sized files: Search for zero-sized files

� All files: Search for all files

� Custom: User defined search mission

2. Select folder by clicking [Browse...].

3. If you want to restrict files of certain types to be found, replace your extension e.g. *.gif in [File Type.:].

You can specify multiple file name pattern by adding more than one file path and specify another file type

e.g. *.gif

4. If sub-folder is included in the search, tick the sub-folder check box or clear it to exclude sub-folder.

5. You can specify file size, file date and duplicate definition in [Define...]. For details, please check Define

Report page

6. By default, NoClone would search include Hidden Files/Folders. To excluding all the hidden files, click

[Exclude Path] on the left panel and type in the searching path in field provided, checking [Hidden folders

and files] option and click [+] to add the path. To excluding files under Windows folder, select [Protect

Windows Folder].

7. Press [Add>] button to a add the folder

8. To add more path in single search, click [Add more path>] . Type in another directory you want to search in

the box on the top and click [Add] button above the "Path box"

9. To add path to compare with master folder, click [Compare again master folder>]. Click [Add] button to add

pathes.

10. You can remove selected folder by selecting added folder and then press [Remove<] button.

11. Press [Search] button to begin the search.

12. You can cancel the search during searching by pressing [Cancel], but please wait a moment while stopping.

13. When search is completed, you can start a [new search] with other criteria or [Back to search] to search

again with the same criteria.

Setting up Search Criteria

To speed up your search and restrict files to those you are interested in, there are a number of criteria you can

set, namely path, file types, file size, date, and scope. They are explained in detailed as follows:

� Path

You can type in path e.g. "c:\My Documents" manually, browse the folder or choose template path

from the drop-down list box. Template paths includes "My Documents", "Desktop" and "My

Favourites", the physical location will be added if you click on it.

� File Types

You can type the file type to be search in the field "File Type". For searching all files , you can type

"*.*". For searching more than 1 file type, click "Add path" and add the current file type into the list

and then type in the next file type and click Add.

� Scope

You can exclude a folder by checking "Exclude Folder" in the main view.



After you click the "Exclude Path", a pop-up dialog appear. You can browse any path you want to

exclude by clicking [...] button and click [+] to add into the list. For safety purpose, we suggest you to

protect system folders by checking "protect system folders" folder" to exclude them.

� File Size and Date

To specify the range of file size to be searched, click "Define..." and a dialog box would popup.

� File Size



You can specify the minimum and maximum file size to include in the search. For example, you can

set minimum file size to 2KB to ignore those small files as there are many which you don't interested

in at all.

� Date

You can specify the range of file date in the searching criteria. Date available to be selected are

"Any","Last modified in last day", "last week", "last month and last year". You can also specify a

specific date to search for.

Search Options

� Pre-defined Search Type

�

There are 7 search types you can set namely: Exact-content duplicate file, Same-name duplicate files, Large

duplicate files, Large files ,Zero-size files, All files and Custom .

1. Exact-content duplicate file

Same-name files are suspected to be the same but their contents may be different. Duplicate files are those

contents identically the same regardless file name.

File A: 1010101010101

File B: 1010101010101

File A is exactly identical to file B.

2. Same-name duplicate files

Those files with the same file name but may different in content.

Note: Make sure these file are identical before deletion.

3. Duplicate MP3

Searching MP3 with same Title and artist in MP3 tag.

Note: You can included other information like album, track No. by checking corresponding boxes.



4. Large duplicate files (>1 MB)

File sized more than 1 MB and having same file size are compared among each other in terms of their

content.

5. Large files ( >1 MB)

File sized more than 1 MB and having same file size are compared among each other in terms of their

content.

6. Zero-size files

Those files without any contents. They are usually temporary files.

7. All files

This option allows user to search for all files in the in the path specified.

8. Custom

This option allows user to make custom filtering setting. The combination can be varies such as same name

but not same size , same content but not same name.

Note: Check the box [Remember Settings] if you want to keep your changes.

� Hidden Folders and Files

Check this to include hidden folders and files in the search. Note when this is not checked, if files which are

not hidden but located in a hidden folder, they will be not be included in the search.

� Protect system folder

Exclude Windows folder and Program files folder in the search. It is highly recommended to check this box.

Reviewing Search Result

After the search result is shown, you have to check if the duplicate files in result list are really true duplicates.

You can review your search result by using functions: Open, Open with default editor, Open Folder, Preview

images, File properties and Report.



� Open File

Open files to see if they are true duplicate files:

1. Click on a file in result list.

2. Click Review > Open or press Ctrl + O to open file with associated program.

� Shortcut for open file: Ctrl + O

� Open Folder

To see where the file is located and what files are its neighbours:


2. Click Review > Open folder to open selected folder.

� Preview images


2. If the file is recognized by NoClone, file is shown in preview box.

List of recognized file type:

� bitmap (.bmp) files

� icon (.ico) files

� cursor (.cur) files

� run-length encoded (.rle) files

� metafile (.wmf) files

� enhanced metafiles (.emf)

� GIF (.gif) files

� JPEG (.gif) files

� PNG (.png) files and Tiff (*.tif) files

(Windows 2000, XP, 2003 with latest service pack only)

Note: You can always hide/show review panel by clicking the hide icon in the right hand corner

� File Properties

To see more information about the selected file:


2. Click Review > File Properties.

Marking files for file actions

You can mark files for removal by using [Smart Marking], [Mark all except one], [Mark Selected Files], [Clear All

Marks] and of course, by hand. Smart Marking is the most efficient way to mark files for dfferent action (deleting,

copying, moving etc). You can mark files for removal by size, date, version, folder and file name pattern.



� Smart Marker

1. Select Mark > Smart Marker at the menu bar or Press [Ctrl-K].

2. To mark those older files, choose "Older File" under "By Date:" field and similarly for size and

length of file name.

Note: Choosing more than one criteria will mark files only satisfying ALL Criteria.

3. To mark those files gif file under "My documents" folder and sub-folders, type "*.gif" under "By

Pattern:" , click show folders and check the box besides "My documents" under "By Folder" and

select Sub-folder below.



4. If all files in the duplicate file group are marked, you can check [Keep at least one file

unmarked] to leave at least one file unmarked. It is NOT recommended to uncheck this box as it

may lead to marking whole duplicate file groups.

5. You can create your own combination of marking files by date, size, version, file name pattern

and folder.

6. If you want to make should all group is marked, you can check the box [Don't leave any group

be unmarked]. However this option will NOT mark all files in a group.

7. Finally, Click [Mark] to mark files which fulfilling your criteria. Or you can choose [Mark all

Except One] to mark all files except one in every group. This is particularly useful if you just

want to eliminate all duplicate files.

� Shortcut keys for marking files: Ctrl + K

Note: Since both original and duplicate files are included in the result list, it is recommended to

keep at least one file in a group of duplicate files.

� Mark All/Mark Selected Files/Clear All Marks

Marking all file/no file and selected (highlighted) files are also provided.

1. Choose: Mark > mark > selected files , Invert all marks or clear all marks.

File removal

After marking duplicate files to be removed, you can delete, replace by hard-link(NTFS link) , move and copy files.

� Deleting marked files

1. Click the Action > Save Space in the menu bar.

� Delete permanently - delete the file permanently from the hard disk. The deleted file is

unrecoverable.

� Move to recycle bin - Move the file to recycle bin. File can be recover from the recycle bin.

This option is recommended for deletion to prevent accidentally information lost.

� Replace by NTFS link - Replace the marked files with hard-link. It means that files are linked to

the same source only and the rest are deleted , yet it could still access the file in original place.

This option is recommended as it could retains the file structure and the point of access to the

file.

Notes: you can optionally check the option [Remove empty directories after deleting] to save

your time to delete all of these empty directories. You can check the option of [Replace by

shortcut] to leave a shortcut point to its master copy after the duplicate file is deleted.

Recommendation: Move files to a temporary folder or burn CDR/DVDR to archive files for some time

before deletion.

Warning: Delete files at your own risk, verify those files to be deleted carefully. We don't bear any

responsibility for any loss you have made.



� Moving marked files

1. Click the Action > Move in the menu bar.

2. Click [Browse...] to select destination folder.

� Copying marked files

1. Click the Action > Move in the menu bar.

2. Click [Browse...] to select destination folder.

Export Result list (CSV, Excel or XML format)

After search, result list can be exported in comma separated value (CSV), Excel (*.xls) or XML (*.xml) format:

Select menu [Search Session] then [Export ...].



Save/Load Search Session

Each search session can be saved and later loaded in NoClone. Path list, search parameters and result will be

saved.

� To Save as a new search session

1. Select menu [Search session], then Save Search Session as (Ctrl+A)

2. Enter file name and click [Save]

� To Save current search session

1. Select menu [Search session], then Save Search Session (Ctrl+S)

� To Load search session

1. Select menu [Search session], then Load Search Session (Ctrl+L)

2. Select file to be loaded and then click [Open]

To export result list in other formats e.g. CSV, see Export Result

Note: Saved search session files is in format of *.noclone. You can load the session by loading procedure

described above, or simply double click the *.noclone file. Search session files created by v3.2 and before are

currently NOT compatible with NoClone 4



Searching Duplicates Through Network

This section shows you how to search duplicate files on network using a single workstation.

Note: NoClone Home Edition only support searching duplicates in 5 network drives in a single search only. You

can click Update NoClone to update from Home Edition to Enterprise Edition

To searching duplicates through network:

Note: If you can access the network without entering password, just simply ignore Part I and start Part II.

Part I: Before activating NoClone

1. Start Menu --> My Computer

2. In My Computer, click Tool --> Map Network Drive

3. Select a drive and fill in the Folder

4. Click "different user name" to enter username and password

5. Click Finish to complete mapping

If mapping drive successfully, a network drive icon is displayed in My Computer.

Part II: Now activate NoClone and you can add network paths in 2 ways:

1. Click Browse... in "1. Select Paths" to browse the network

Hard Links

A hard link is the file system representation of a file by which more than one path references a

single file in the same volume. To create a hard link, use the CreateHardLink function. Many

changes to that file are instantly visible to applications that access it through the hard links that

reference it. However, the directory entry size and attribute information is updated only for the link

through which the change was made.

For example, in a system where C: and D: are local drives and Z: is a network drive mapped to

\\fred\share, the following reference is permitted as a hard link:

� C:\dira\ethel.txt linked to C:\dirb\dirc\lucy.txt

The following are not:

� C:\dira linked to c:\dirb

� C:\dira\ethel.txt linked to D:\dirb\lucy.txt

By creating hard links you can:

� Use the same file name as the original file but appear in different folders.

� Use different file names from the original file but appear in the same folder.

� Use different file names from the original file and appear in different folders.

Because a hard link is a directory entry for a file, an application can modify a file by using any of its

hard links. Applications that use any other hard link can detect the changes. However, directory

entries for hard links are updated only when a user accesses a file by using the hard link. For

example, if a user opens and modifies a file by using its hard link, and the size of the original file

changes, the hard link that is used to access the file also shows the new size.

Hard links do not have security descriptors; instead, the security descriptor belongs to the original

file to which the hard link points. Thus, if you change the security descriptor of any hard link, you

actually change the underlying file security descriptor. All hard links that point to the file allow the

newly specified access. You cannot give a file different security descriptors on a per-hard-link basis.

NoClone works very fast with limited number of files, however, in enterprise context,

the greatest challenge to NoClone is scalability problems.

Is it safe to delete duplicate files?

By the new features of NoClone4, Files can be replaced by hard link. It is safe to delete

the duplicates but retain the file organization. To see more about hard link , click here.

In general, deleting duplicate files without hard link depends on situations. Files can be

divided as data files and program/system files. Program files usually located in program

folder or system folder which usually a .exe or .dll file. It is not recommended to

delete files in Program File and Windows unless you are an advance user. For data file,

it is safe to delete duplicate file after you preview the files before you delete.

For NoClone, it is safe to find out duplicates because NoClone compares files by a true

byte-by-byte comparison which means NoClone only highlight files with same

contents regardless of file name. And also you can search for same name or same size

duplicates, depends on your search requirements. But it is strongly recommended to

review files before deletion.

Does NoClone have any limitation?

In NoClone v.3.2 , NoClone can only search for maximum about 300,000 files in a

single search for 256MB main memory (the number varies depending on the size of

main memory). But we have overcame this problem in NoClone v4.0 and now capable

to search 1,000,000 files at a time. Although NoClone v3.2 may not search for large

scans of files at a time, you can divide the searching into 2 or more. To do this:

1. Activate NoClone

2. In "Search criteria", click "Browse"

3. Select the target path and click "OK"

4. Enter the file type you want to search in the file type field.

5. Click "Define Report" and set the "Min File Size" (eg. 0KB) and "Max File

Size" (eg. 500KB)

6. Click Ok to confirm setting and close the define report dialog box.

7. If you need add more than 1 path, Click Add more path and click "Add>" to add

the target paths and repeat step 2 - 6. If not , just move forward.

8. Click "Search" to start searching

In this way, NoClone could scan fewer files at a time as the file size is limited. After

each searching, you may repeat step 2 to 8 with different "Min File Size" and "Max File

Size" to have another search.

Why I still don't receive registration information after purchasing

NoClone?

If your payment is made with eCheck, it requires 4 business days to clear. If you need

to activate NoClone immediately, place another order by credit card using ShareIt,

and we will cancel your first order by eCheck.

Why my email can't be used to register?

If you paid by RegNow or ShareIt, both of them do not accept "free" email address like

Can NoClone handle duplicate MP3 files?

Due to byte-by-byte comparison, mp3 records from different sources cannot be

detected.

Here is the suggestion for future release. Sure, we can compare the waveform to see if

they are similar but simplicity, we can list the mp3s with the same title and singer

under mp3 tags and then allow you to make files by sampling rate etc. It is possible to

implement the later case while difficult for the former case.

Can NoClone handle duplicate files at MS Outlook?

NoClone cannot scan duplicate attachements. However, there are some programs can

find duplicate email. You can start your search by the term "duplicate email" in the

search engine.

After scanning the drive, NoClone didn't find any duplicate files from my

computer, anything going wrong?

There are 3 points to be aware in searching duplicates.

1. You can check to see if the folders you search for is under Program Files or

Windows folders. As these folders and their sub-folders. As these folders and

their sub-folders are protected by NoClone, you have to disable "Protect system

folder" to allow your search.

2. Check whether your search only limited to a specific size (such as min = 500KB ,

max = 500KB) or just searching zero-sized files if you want to check for all files.

3. Check whether the excluded path setting is the same as the included path

setting.

What is Smart Marker?

Smart Marker automatically mark files for deletion by click menu "3. Result Files" -->

"Smart Marker (recommended)". You can mark files by date, size, version, path, file

type and file name. However, you should use the preview box and opening file to

ensure if marked files can be deleted. Delete files at your own risk.

Why the computer frozen out crashed?

It is because NoClone is still comparing a lot of files, it may not halt. So it is

recommended to wait for a few minute for completion.

Why I cannot uninstall NoClone?

To uninstall NoClone:

1. Click "Start" --> "Control Panel"

2. Click "Add or Remove Programs"

3. Select "Change or Remove Programs"

4. Find Reasonable NoClone in the "Currently installed programs" list

5. Click "Remove" to uninstall NoClone

In this way, NoClone can be removed safely.
