A könyv 1937-bôl való,a kép 1909-bôl.

I am looking at a portrait of the youngKosztolányi in a new French book. The bookwas published in 1937, while the picture wasmade in 1909. I have seen Dezsõ Kosztolányimany times during the past 10 to 15 years, but from now on, whenever he comes tomind, I will recall this picture of him, since Ibelieve it is the most authentic and the mostreal. It is an attractive, unnerving face, contemplative but still provocative, mildly“decadent” but still clear-cut andmasculine. It reveals not only the forehead, eyes and nose of the poet, but also hispoems, short stories and studies. It evenshows some of the works that he wrote muchlater, in the last period of his life, the mostprofound and most painful: the novel AnnaÉdes and the poem Dawn Drunkenness.
The painter Lajos Tihanyi seems to haveanticipated these future masterpieces in thepoet’s features, just as a chiromancerdetects a person’s fate in the criss-crossinglines of the palm. Now a French book lendsactuality to all this. The book is called Tihanyi and it is about theParis-based Hungarian painter who has beenliving abroad for decades and who, as far asI know, is deaf and dumb. In this book, whichcontains his selected works, he still speakssuggestively and in Hungarian. Even RobertDesnos, the author of the French foreword, recognises this, mentioning Tihanyi’sHungarianness several times. He writes:“There is something in him of the hardnessof the ancient mountains.” Although this isby no means an exhaustive characterisationit is important to note, since the remarkreveals that the Parisian art critic hasnoticed the Hungarianness of these veryParisian paintings. He has sensed theoriginal, peculiar and baffling featuresbeneath the layers of several decades ofParisianness. When Hungarians look at these
a tenyérjós érzi a bôr kusza vonalaibana sorsot. Mindezt, mondom, most egy franciakönyv teszi idôszerûvé.
paintings, perhaps they are not even awareof it, but it would not go unnoticed by Frenchspectators, even though there is nothingspecifically Hungarian in Tihanyi’s paintings.Nor is there in Kosztolányi’s Anna Édes orAladár Kuncz’s Fekete Kolostor, both ofwhich will soon be published in French. Theseworks are not “Hungarian-style”, but theyare Hungarian without the Great Plain. Theyare Hungarian to their very core, in theirattitudes, in their manner of association, intheir tone and in their instinctive reflexes. When we read the prose of Kosztolányi orAladár Kuncz we can claim that “it couldhave been written by a French writer”. Butwhen it comes to translation it turns outthat it poses an extremely difficultchallenge. There is something of the“hardness of the ancient mountains” inthese very subtle and very Europeansentences that translators find very difficultto grasp. Although Anna Édes belongs amongthe most European and “most French” ofHungarian novels, if we concentrate harderon the inner music of its measured and
sophisticated sentences we realise that thismusic comes closest to János Arany. There issomething very moving and very gratifying inthe fact that sometimes such European“Hungarian” and Hungarian “European”works do reach the West, and not just “GreatPlain” Hungarian-style or superficialHollywood-style European mediocrity, sinceour intellectual exports sadly most oftenoscillate between these two extremes, between the gypsy orchestra and the farce.Only very few people care, and they only avery little, about the fact that we do knowsomething else, that we have somethingmore to say to Europe, and even to America. The world is happy to encounter the trueHungarian intellect on the few occasionsthat this intellect reaches the world. Thisintellect is neither exotic nor cosmopolitan. It is European in a Hungarian way, just asother works are European in a French way, orin a Russian way. It is European in aHungarian way, just like a poor Hungarianpeasant who is never "folkloristic", orperhaps only when he has to entertain a
member of the gentry or the bourgeoisie, ora foreign tourist, at their command and inreturn for pennies. So, as I said, I was somewhat moved when Iencountered Tihanyi’s painting ofKosztolányi in that French book. Perhaps itrepresented even more to me than just anopportunity to think about questions of artand literature. To a certain extent it hasbecome an emotional issue. It has arousedin me once again that sense of communitythat all of us, who think in a leftist way, have deep down, however little we like totalk about it. We feel, silently but strongly, that we belong somewhere. To a physical orspiritual landscape that is inalienably ours.A few fields or hillsides that we have perhapsonly seen from a train window, a fewpaintings, sculptures and novels, a Budapeststreet corner, a few stanzas by Vörösmartyor Ady, a few very old folksongs from thelatest collections, silent peasants in fadedclothes and half-naked children from thecity's outskirts whom we understand withoutthe need for words, the definite and

“Don't you realize lord Roberto that the casualness is true affectation ? Because it is seen clearly that he makes an effort with all the care possible to show that he doesn'tthink to what he does, and that is to think of it toomuch. And because he exceeds the limits of the happymedium, this ease is affected and improper, which gives a contraryresult to the one he was sought, namely to hide art. This is why I do not estimate that the defect of the affectation is less in the ease, which in oneself is commendable, when one drops his clothing, that it is in the research of the elegance, which in oneself is likewise commendable, when one carries his head this straight in the fear of spoilinghis hairstyle, or that one keeps at the bottom of his hat a mirror and a comb in his sleeve, and that one always has behind oneself a page which follows you in the streetwith a sponge and a brush.”
Italian author 1528 :Baldassar Castiglione, The book of the courtesan
