The following slide is provided by FCPS to lay out
the course sequencing of math classes from 7th grade
through 12th grade.
Please note that summer coursework is available
(after an in-person Algebra 1 class) to advance
through the sequence faster.

Every math course taught in FCPS has the same overarching goals for
every student:
• To build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving and
to develop a repertoire of skills and strategies for solving a variety of
problem types
• To communicate mathematical ideas coherently and clearly and to
analyze and evaluate the mathematical thinking of others
• To use logical reasoning in solving mathematical problems and to
explain and justify mathematical ideas
• To understand how mathematical ideas interconnect and build on one
another and to use those connections to solve problems
• To create and use a variety of representations in learning, doing, and
communicating mathematics

Pre-Algebra prepares students to take Algebra 1 in 9th grade.
It strengthens and extends concepts learned in math 7 with a heavy focus on:
Proportional reasoning Number sense Understanding of functions Multi-step equation solving
There is NO final exam. Students take quarter quizzes at the end of each quarter.
Students take the math 8 SOL at the end of the year.

Algebra 1 is a high school course. The grade earned at the end of
the year will become a part of the overall GPA placed on the high
school transcript that is sent as a part of college applications.
Students will take the Algebra 1 SOL test at the end of the year.
However, passing this in middle school does NOT count as the
one math SOL needed for graduation requirements. A math SOL
test to meet that requirement must be taken during the 4 years of
high school.
In Algebra 1, students will take a cumulative final exam.
(This is NOT true for students taking Pre-Algebra)

Each of the following criteria must be met for placement in Algebra I Honors at 7th grade:
▪ AAP 6 or a year-long accelerated mathematics course
▪ Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT) score at or above the 91st
percentile
▪ A score of pass advanced (500 or above) on the Math 7 SOL test
By signing your child up for this course, you are also
signing your child up for Geometry HN as an 8th grader.
Algebra 1 honors classes are a mix of both 7th and
8th grade students.

This course is taught assuming prior knowledge of everything taught in math 7 honors.
The pacing of this course is quicker and more rigorous than Algebra 1.
If a student takes this course coming from math 7, there is a lot of independent out of class learning that will have to take place to meet the curriculum where it is taught.
