CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN

Cape Town’s first winter rain of any significance arrived in the last week of April, an event welcomed by all that not only lifted the mood but also brought long awaited relief to many a dry suburban garden and empty water storage tanks.

Our average dam position of just under 21% remains dangerously low, but we need substantial rains in the catchment areas over the next few months to meaningfully improve the position as a 0.9% increase after that first winter rain suggests our water position will not be resolved in a single winter without very sustained and abnormally high rainfall.

The City is fortunately not currently staring down a very dry barrel with “Day Zero” firmly in its sights and we do not at this stage need to take reduction measures at the Club to another level. However, our water position remains very critical. Water saving initiatives at Kelvin Grove are in place and we need to continue working together using our on-site water source as effectively and efficiently as possible.

One of our water saving initiatives unfortunately resulted in members being inconvenienced by inconsistent water pressure in the change room showers. The cause of the problem, not evident at the time of changing over from municipal to the on-site supply, has now been traced and will hopefully be resolved shortly.

The Club, notwithstanding the Cape’s critical water position, enjoyed an excellent summer. Our sporting facilities have been well used and the swimming pool in particular proved to be a very popular family venue over an extended and very hot summer.

We will continue to encourage a family and child-friendly environment at the Club. Next summer may require some form of guest control at the swimming pool and the introduction of “Junior Swimmer Members” as well as stricter application of the requirement that children under the age of 16 using the pool are accompanied by an adult member.

Cricket lovers had international viewing opportunities with the Indian and Australian tours, but this year’s rugby season has so far produced mixed results for the faithful. Somewhat unusually, while the Australians were tampering with a cricket game at Newlands, another Australian Rugby side was doing battle with the Stormers at Newlands Rugby Stadium. A rare double feature that we are unlikely to experience again, but despite the concurrent events, parking at Kelvin Grove interestingly was not a challenge on the day.

The three home games during May and the Test Match against England in late June will be interesting measures of parking demand, support of our food and beverage outlets, and the number of members who find they cannot access the Club as they have not settled their subscription accounts!

At the end of April, 12% of our members had not settled their accounts. Whereas, the position is improving on a daily basis, the collective impact of these overdue subscription accounts on both our cash flow and VAT commitment to SARS is substantial. The names of those members with outstanding subscription accounts will appear on the defaulters list on the Club’s Notice Boards.

Coupled to an excellent summer, Kelvin has enjoyed a very good financial year and I am pleased to be able to confirm that our audited results for the year ended on 28 February better the good

performance recorded over the last two financial years and, that this year’s results are in fact the best in the Club’s history. Financial details will be published in the Annual Report due in May and tabled at our 93rd Annual General Meeting on 4 June.

Generating a surplus in any given financial year is however not possible without the continued support of our members and their guests, and that saw Food & Beverage and Functions turnover grow by 8% in the last year.

Food & Beverage turnover involved 162 550 servings during the year, equating to an average of 13 546 servings per month or 448 per day. The Waterside and Coffee Shop, our relatively low budget outlets, continue to be best supported in terms of volume, and accounted for 60% of the servings at the Club as well as generated just over 22% of the food & beverage turnover for the year.

However, whilst no component part of our Food & Beverage offerings is more important than the other, and Functions continue to be the major contributor to turnover, the numbers expressed by servings volume or, as a total Rand amount mask the logistics and hard work supporting those numbers.

The annual Staff Awards Ceremony that took place at the end of April provided an understated reminder of the dedication, enthusiasm and hard work carried out by our team of one hundred men and women, much of which happens behind the scenes in the early morning, and late evenings.

We tend to forget that a significant number of our staff are dependent on a continually unreliable public transport system, but the fact that thirty staff members received perfect attendance awards for one to three years, speaks volumes. Nine staff members reached long service milestones of between 5 and 20 years, Functions was the best performer for the year and six staff members received other awards, the details of which are included in the newsletter.

Danie Appel and his team do their best to ensure the Kelvin experience is enjoyable for all of our members and guests and it is appropriate at financial year end to recognise and thank Danie and his team for their sterling efforts during the past financial year. At the same time, I would like to thank my fellow members serving on the main and supporting Committee structures for their inputs and efforts during the year.

Last and most importantly not least, thanks to our members for their continued support that sustained our food and beverage offerings and allowed Food & Beverage and Functions turnover to grow.

Whereas, we may have “more sport and leisure activities that can be found at today’s newest and most up-to-date city and suburban exercise centres” our swimming pool will not be an attractive option for the next few months, and tennis, bowls and croquet are likely to be rain interrupted, but there are enjoyable food and beverage options at reasonable prices, an exciting programme of events on the Kelvin calendar, coaching opportunities on the squash courts and gym instructors that are on hand to keep matters in shape.

ENJOY THE WINTER MONTHS AT KELVIN,JON EAGAR

CHEF'S CHOICE

MUSHROOM SOUPINGREDIENTS:

• 500 g button mushrooms chopped• 1 large onion, peeled and finely diced • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and finely crushed• 50 g butter • 250 ml white wine• 100 ml Old Brown Sherry• 30g tomato paste• 250 ml cream• 250 ml milk • Soya sauce to taste

METHOD:

• In a large saucepan, sauté the onions in the butter on low heat until translucent. Add the garlic and continue to cook for a few more minutes.

• Add the mushrooms and cook until most of the liquid from the mushrooms has evaporated.• Increase the heat and add the tomato paste while stirring constantly until the paste has caramelised. • Add the alcohol and cook on medium heat uncovered until the wine has mostly evaporated. • Add the cream and cook for about 5 minutes. • Blend with a stick blender then add the milk and cook for 5 more minutes. • Season to taste with the soya sauce. As the soya is already salty, there is no need to add salt.

WHAT’S EASTER WITHOUT AN EASTER EGG HUNT?On Sunday, 1 April 2018, it was a cracking fun day at Kelvin Grove Club! The kids were out in numbers in search of the Easter Bunny and delicious Easter treats. The kids crept and crawled through the gardens, but could not find the Easter Bunny. He did not show his face, but all kiddies got some treats in the form of marshmallow eats. We all know that the parents also secretly looked for the eggs while the kids were trying to find them.

We also had our competition this year with the question “How are Easter eggs made?” the answers were funny and interesting! One champ had the answer we were looking for, congratulations to Jack (age 7). Hope you enjoyed your Easter egg goodies and didn’t eat all the chocolate at once. His answer was ‘An Easter Bunny never reveals his secret’.

UPCOMING CLUB LUNCHEONS

GUEST SPEAKER: GLYNNIS BREYTENBACH THURSDAY, 21 JUNE 2018 TIME: 12:00 FOR 12:30

TOPIC: RULE OF LAW – PERSONAL COMMENTARY ON THE EVOLUTION AND IMPORTANCE OF AN INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY.

BIOGRAPHY:

Over a legal career spanning 26 years, advocate Glynnis Breytenbach earned a reputation as one of the country’s most formidable state prosecutors, her infamous stare piercing the defences of many. Now a member of parliament and the Democratic Alliance’s shadow minister for justice, Glynnis finally shares how her life in and out of court shaped her into the outspoken, sometimes hard-headed, always principled woman she is, and the public figure she never wanted to be.

In Rule of Law, Glynnis provides personal commentary on the evolution and importance of an independent judiciary in South Africa, and explains why the rule of law is critical to the foundation and the future of the country. Her account offers fascinating insights, a critical analysis of some of South Africa’s recent legal and political cliffhangers, and a suggestion as to how the law can help us find a way forward as a country.

“I was always impressed with the fairness and high level of integrity shown by Glynnis. But, above all, I like the fire in her. She truly has fire in her belly.” – Vusi Pikoli

NECHAMA BRODIE is a veteran journalist and the best-selling author of four books. Her work has appeared in the Sunday Times, Mail & Guardian, City Press, Men’s Health, the Guardian (UK) and the Hindustan Times (India). She is the head of TRI Facts, the training and research section of independent fact-checking organisation Africa Check.

GUEST SPEAKER: SIMON EKIN THURSDAY, 7 JUNE 2018 TIME: 12:00 FOR 12:30

TOPIC: THE ART OF COURAGE – DE-BUNKING THE COURAGE MYTH

BIOGRAPHY:

Simon is a professional speaker and trainer of speakers. He speaks to organisations and businesses on the topics of speaking, storytelling, authenticity, vulnerability and courage.

He is a former British Army Officer, photojournalist and trans-African cyclist, having cycled from Cape Town to England, covering 13 000 km. On the subject of speaking, he has delivered over one thousand speeches and has written a book on his experiences, called The Art of Courage – De-bunking the Courage Myth.

His focused and concentrated journey of public speaking started by ‘accident’ when he delivered an impromptu speech on a bus in London in 1999. In May 2011, he embarked on a project he called, ‘90 talks in 90 days’ where he delivered 90 spontaneous talks to over 900 strangers. The next year he did ‘365 talks in 365 days’.

GUEST SPEAKER: MANDY WIENER THURSDAY, 19 JULY 2018 TIME: 12:00 FOR 12:30

TOPIC: MINISTRY OF CRIME – AN UNDERWORLD EXPLORED. THIS BOOK EXAMINES HOW ORGANISED CRIME, GANGSTERS AND POWERFUL POLITICAL FIGURES HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CAPTURE THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITIES AND AGENCIES.

BIOGRAPHY:

As a follow up to the bestselling Killing Kebble: An Underworld Exposed (2010), the new book from Mandy Wiener, Ministry of Crime: An Underworld Explored, examines how organised crime, gangsters and powerful political figures have been able to capture the law enforcement authorities and agencies. These various organisations have been eviscerated, hollowed out and left ineffective. They have been infiltrated and compromised and, as a result, prominent underworld figures have been able to flourish in South Africa, setting up elaborate networks of crime with the assistance of many cops. The criminal justice system has been left exposed and it is crucial that the South African public knows about the capture that has occurred on different levels.

MANDY WIENER is an award-winning investigative journalist and author of the true-crime bestsellers Killing Kebble: An Underworld Exposed and Behind the Door: The Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp Story, as well as the acclaimed memoir My Second Initiation (co-written with Vusi Pikoli). Wiener has been reporting on crime, the courts and politics in South Africa for more than a decade.

Both Killing Kebble and My Second Initiation were short-listed for the prestigious Alan Paton Sunday Times Literary Award and chosen as Jenny Crwys-Williams' Books of the Year in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

GUEST SPEAKER: INÉ REYNIERSE THURSDAY, 16 AUGUST 2018 TIME: 12:00 FOR 12:30

CLUB LUNCHEON REVIEW

In April, we had the great honour of having Julian Jansen, one of the first journalists on the scene of the De Zalze murders, do a talk on his book “The De Zalze Murders”.

Julian Jansen started his journalistic career at Rapport newspaper in 2006. In 2010, he and two colleagues from City Press received a commendation in the hard news category of the Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards, in recognition for their reports on the murder of the British bride Anni Hindocha and the charges against her husband, Shrien Dewani. In 2013, he was awarded Rapport's Special Editor's Prize for his reporting.

Julian shared with us his in-depth and interesting findings of what really took place at the Breda residence, including a few secrets and valuable hints that provided more insight into the story and left us longing for more to try to put this “puzzle” together that shook the country.

This hard hitting and captivating crime book is worth a read and we can promise you that once you have started reading the first page of this book, you won’t be able to put it down.

The one question that is still on everyone’s lips, including Julian’s, is after the Breda murders “can drugs, jealousy and money drive a normal twenty-year-old to pick up an axe and wipe out nearly his whole family?”

In April, we hosted the 14th Annual Fundraising Dinner with the DHL Stormers to raise funds for our chosen charity, Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund. On behalf of the Management of Kelvin Grove Club, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you once again for your support. Your commitment and generosity sponsoring prizes and auction items for this event made the evening possible and a huge success.

Together we did it! We reached the R1 million mark. Your attendance at the celebration of the R1 million milestone this year was the only reason that the last 14 years of fundraising have been possible. By showing your support for rugby you have ensured that all the seriously injured players of the game never lose that sense of passion and camaraderie and always know that there will be a team behind them.

To give you a brief glimpse into the impact you have made to the Players’ Fund – the following list is what R1 000 000.00 could have bought over the last 14 years!

• 2 motorised wheelchairs • 4 manual wheelchairs • 4 electric hospital beds • 2 years of medical consumables for 107 recipients

Besides saying thank you for supporting Rugby’s Caring Hands, we would like to mention one more way of helping them – we invite you to consider pledging a donation for as little as R50 a month to help them keep doing the work they do!

Please visit their website for more information www.playersfund.org.za

Thank you for contributing to this year and assisting us once again, we will see you all next year!

KLEINE ZALZEWEDNESDAY, 27 JUNE 2018

In the heart of the picturesque Stellenbosch Winelands lies the century-old gem of the Kleine Zalze estate. Bordering the provincial town of Stellenbosch, affectionately known as “Little Europe”.

Kleine Zalze provides an escape to a timeless era of Cape Dutch architecture, exquisite wine, fine dining and leisurely days spent with family and friends. The estate offers a variety of attractions, including Kleine Zalze’s award-winning wines, critically acclaimed gourmet restaurant, breathtaking hiking and cycling routes, the world-renowned De Zalze golf course and luxurious

four-star Cape Dutch style lodge. With their classical composition and complementary relationship with food, their wines ensure a refreshing experience reminiscent of the Stellenbosch countryside.

MENU:

- Warm mushroom salad with sun dried tomatoes, olives, toasted pine nuts and feta - Fillet of beef on green vegetables, tomato and red onion salsa, fondant potatoes and horseradish cream

- Caramel pear tiramisu with passion fruit and toasted almonds

ERNIE ELSWEDNESDAY, 25 JULY 2018

Through his many travels around the globe, Ernie has been exposed to and appreciated some of the world’s greatest wines, and in 1999 he decided to pursue his developing passion for fine wine with the creation of Ernie Els Wines. Ernie fittingly

chose Stellenbosch, the noble heart of South African wine, to base his operation. His focus, discipline and commitment have been the foundation of his success, and these factors are evident in Ernie’s quest to produce premium wine. With the help of award-winning winemaker Louis Strydom, they produced the maiden, 2000 vintage of Ernie Els – a ‘classic’ Bordeaux blend.

The marketing synergy between the wine and Ernie’s ‘classic’ golf swing was apparent. Since its launch, Ernie Els Wines has won plaudits and many prestigious awards around the world, and the team continues to make a big impact on both the South African

and international wine markets.

MENU:

- Avocado with biltong and a goat’s cheese “Caesar” salad - Norwegian salmon with exotic mushroom and truffle risotto, and a herbed red wine demi glaze

- Passion fruit tart with berry coulis and coconut sorbet

LANDSKROONWEDNESDAY, 29 AUGUST 2018

Paul and Hugo de Villiers are the owners of this beautiful estate located on the south-western slopes of the Paarl Mountain, which is well known for its big reds and port. Paul believes the soil and climate of Landskroon are perfect for producing Shiraz, which happens to be his favourite grape variety. Paul is the fifth generation to carry the winemaking flag at Landskroon after a

portion of the farm was first purchased in 1874 after the de Villiers family moved from Niort in France. When Paul released two new vintages in 2004, the Paul de Villiers Reserve and Shiraz, within its Paul de Villiers Range of limited release wines, he was inspired in memory of his late father. Together with winemaker Fanie Geyser, these fine wines represented nine generations of

experience and wine making tradition on the estate.

MENU:

- Artichoke, olive and brie tart with a herbed micro salad - Slow roasted duck on poached sun-dried fruit, baked apple, and roasted butternut couscous with port jus

- Ginger bread pudding with Van der Hum spiced custard and hazelnut ice cream

We welcomed autumn with open arms. We could only imagine what the atmosphere would be like on a beautiful wine farm out in the winelands; crispy chilly mornings, crunchy auburn leaves beneath your feet and vineyards in an array of vibrant colours.

We encourage you to take a step outside into a ray of sunshine and raise your glass to the approaching winter season filled with cosy nights by the fireplace and delicious Glühwein, while the heavy winter rain fills our thirsty dams and nourishes our dry lands, bringing new life to the earth.

SIMONSIG WINE TASTINGIn April, we had the privilege of having Simonsig Wine Estate at the club. From groundbreaking innovations, including co-finding the Stellenbosch Wine Route and producing South Africa’s first Méthode Cap Classique (a bottle of fermented sparkling wine made in the style of French champagne), Simonsig is devoted to producing terroir-driven wines that express the unique character of Stellenbosch. The Malan Legacy is up there with the very best.

The wine tasting was presented by Debbie Thompson (red wine winemaker) and Michael Malan, who shared their passion, knowledge and love for producing wines of international excellence on their proudly family owned and managed wine estate. We were spoilt by choice on the evening with seven top wines to taste. We narrowed it down to our favourite of the night, The Garland 2009. The Garland is a wine that expresses its close connection with the Stellenbosch mountains, the vineyard and the Malan family. Dark brick red in colour with lingering notes of black cherries and truffles, we can’t think of a better wine to be enjoyed in front of the fireplace on a cold rainy evening.

BLAAUWKLIPPEN GOURMET DINNERIn the midst of summer, we welcomed Blaauwklippen. One of the first members of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, Blaauwklippen is well known for their charming hospitality and premier wines. Mineral-rich soil and the natural grey-blue rocks that surround the vineyards storing the sun’s warmth, create the ideal climate for producing exceptional wines. Generations of families who have been working on the farm for many years, have instilled their roots and live in tune with nature, ensuring that all work done on the farm is done with passion, commitment and pride.

Our favourite pairing of the night would have to be none other than the Blaauwklippen Before & After paired with Van der Hum cheesecake with Nutella brownie and hazelnut syrup – the perfect combination. Intense blackberry, cassis and Christmas spices, combined with the sheer sweetness and gentle heat of rounded notes of oak aged brandy. The mistake would be to buy one bottle, you will regret not buying two!

LEAGUE RESULTS

In addition to our ladies having won the 1st league last season (September), Kelvin’s mixed doubles team also won first league this season without losing a match, and both teams have been promoted to premier league!

Our men’s A and B doubles teams both won their respective leagues without losing a match and were also promoted.

The WP dinner and dance awards ceremony takes place at Kelvin on 15 June where Kelvin teams will be snatching up a few awards. Congrats to you all!

TENNIS

MORNING LADIES LEAGUE RESULTS

For the first time Kelvin entered two morning ladies league teams. Both teams did exceptionally well. Our A team did not drop a match and will be promoted to 2nd league, our B team only dropped one match with one match left to play. The spirit you have all created within your teams is what tennis is all about. Well done ladies, enjoy your celebratory breakfast on 17 May.

THE SENIORS INTERPROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT

This tournament took place in Boland in mid-April. The WP shield team, comprised mostly of Kelvin members, took silver after a great week of tennis. Well done to our very own Danie Appel (team captain), Bokkie du Plessis, Rob Nathan and Shirley Larsen.

TENNIS CONT.

CAPE TOWN SENIORS TOURNAMENT

Kelvin hosted the annual Cape Town Seniors tournament during the week of 3 – 6 May. A growing number of Kelvin members are entering these events and enjoying the competitive and social environment offered in the week. Good exercise, camaraderie and not to mention some top notch tennis!

CLUB CHAMPS 2018

We are thrilled to be hosting our first junior club champs along with the adult tournament. In fact, I think a few of the juniors could cause a few upsets if entered into the open division.

Champs commence the week of 14 May with finals scheduled for 16/17 June, weather permitting.

Players now have the option of playing singles in the under 50 age group or 50 plus age group categories. The other categories are doubles and mixed. The entries are coming in with enthusiasm so we expect a great tournament for both junior and senior members.

Draws will be posted at reception so come down to support some good tennis over the next few weeks or, better yet, get your entries in. Good luck to you all!

TENNIS TIP OF THE DAY

Line calls and tennis etiquette:

Being a “gentleman's” game where we call our own lines there is a golden rule; unless you see the ball CLEARLY out, the benefit of the doubt goes to your opponent and the correct thing to do is award him/her the point. So often we are unsure and offer to replay the point when in fact if you are unsure, the point should be awarded to your opponent. Once a player makes the call, the opponent should not query their call but rather accept it with dignity.

Happy tennis to you all! Tennis Manager Jackie Booth

At the Commonwealth Games, lawn bowls received plenty of coverage as it is popular in Australia and it was very obvious that the game attracts young players, some in their teens and many in their twenties.

Bowls at Kelvin is available seven days a week with floodlights on one green, so it is time for younger members to try it and enjoy it. There is an increase in popularity for birthday functions and corporate days which is encouraging. Contact details of committee members are on the Pavilion notice board.

In the past three months, we have played enjoyable matches against Durbanville, Helderberg Village and have visited Robertson for an away match. The Club Handicap tournament is coming to its conclusion and with the approach of winter we have our annual winter tournament to look forward to.

Many new members have joined recently and we hope that they will enjoy their time on the greens. Club afternoons attract over 50 players regularly, so the bowls section is flourishing. Come and see what the game is about!

ALOHA!

Yes, ‘tis more a fine weather greeting, and whilst it is May the weather is not too wintery just yet. But, we’re a lot luckier than the residents around Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, we wish them well. Here’s hoping for a proper winter with rain on the way (we’ll even play in the rain to show our appreciation).

While many people have been away, support has been reasonable so far this year, and we trust it will continue through the hopefully wetter months.

KD Mowbray and Westlake hosted the Cape Town Open and the SA Ladies Open respectively – great accolades for our two main courses. It re-enforces how fortunate we are to have such quality facilities in our backyard, and is a tribute to the work the greenkeepers do.

Steve is doing a great job running the monthly time sheets and herding the KG golf cats. Thanks Steve!

The golf fortunes move around, so we’ll publish half yearly results in the next newsletter.

Herewith the fixtures for the rest of the year:

Looking forward to seeing you on the greens, where the wish is MAYPD. Best Regards, GEOFF CLARK

With almost half the year over, the squash section is going well! Congratulations to Jay and Amy Kruger on the birth of their baby, and to Ath on her 40th birthday. Leagues are being enjoyed by everyone and we are most impressed that our men’s 16th league is lying second. Their enthusiasm for the game is tangible!

We were represented at the Brotherton Doubles tournament in Knysna by Vince Watters, Kim Euston Brown, Chad Cobbledick, Margie Hunt-Kemp and Mike Richardson. At the SA Masters in Johannesburg, Shirley Whitmore won the over 60s, and Margie Hunt-Kemp won the over 70s. Both women will be in Charlottesville, Virginia for the Squash World Masters in July, and Margie Hunt-Kemp as a Springbok. Good luck to them both and all the other South African players participating.

On behalf of the squash section, we would like to congratulate a fellow Club member, Lucille Damon, who this year completed her 29th consecutive Two Oceans ultra-marathon. What an achievement!

Keep enjoying your squash!

SQUASH

Social bridge is played on Mondays and Fridays from 13:30 to 17:00 in the Library upstairs. On cold winter days there is a cosy fire to keep you warm and in the summer a very efficient air conditioner keeps the temperature at a comfortable level. Added to this, the ever-willing Coffee Shop waitresses take orders for refreshments such as fresh fruit juice, minerals, tea, coffee or something “stronger’’ and, of course, delicious eats.

You need not bring a partner, nor should you feel obliged to come every week. You may find that you only want to play once or twice a month. Whatever you decide, you are more than welcome. Post mortems and criticism are strongly discouraged and if you are bad tempered, you will certainly not be welcome.

Rubber bridge has at least been discontinued and the BODD or BONE scoring system is now used, which is the system favored by millions of bridge players all over the world. The standard of bridge is medium to strong. Unfortunately beginners are not catered for. There is no charge but as the stakes are 10c per 100 points, you will need to bring a few cents with you. Score sheets (but not pens or pencils) are provided.

Remember, there is no commitment, so do pay a visit to the social bridge at Kelvin when you are at a loose end on a Monday or Friday afternoon. You may be pleasantly surprised.

We look forward to seeing you this year!

For more information on bridge, contact Daphne Hawkins on 021 686 7991 or 072 358 4280DAPHNE HAWKINS

CROQUET

The croquet season is now almost complete and it has been a tremendously successful one for all the players and teams so far.

A major team achievement was to conclude the season by winning the coveted Robinson Cup by five clear points. This trophy is a level doubles competition amongst the six associated clubs in the Western Cape and played on a home and away basis.

The winning team to the left, sponsored by Warwick Wealth are from left to right: Margot Prosser: Anne Oxton, Mariel De Bie, Richard Prosser, Di Schuurman, Marilyn Pentz, Thea Lotz and Daphne Korpershoek.

RICHARD PROSSER

Not forgetting Neil McHardy and Sue Cloete who also played an important part of the team during the season.

In February, the Open Doubles were won by Richard and Margot Prosser just edging out Neil McHardy and Borg Stannius in a tightly fought final.

In March, our Seniors tournament was very well supported and a good member attendance saw Mike Beamish (left) beat Colin Chambers (right) in the final.

On Easter Monday, we held our usual fun croquet event sponsored by Warwick Wealth. Good fun was had by all.

Our final tournament on home soil was the open singles championship. The event was again well supported and some tremendous croquet was played by all the entrants.

In an exciting final played, which lasted for an hour and a half, best of thirteen hoops, Richard Prosser (left) just beat Neil McHardy (right) by seven hoops to six. It was tremendous to see all the players in the tournament stay for the duration of the day and enjoy a few celebrating drinks at the Pool Bar afterwards.

Kelvin Grove players fared well in the Alan Wilson Classic tournament held in Port Alfred at the end of April. Richard Prosser and partner Peter Johnson (SWCC) beating Margot Prosser and Di Schuurman in the final of the handicap doubles. Richard and Peter also won the open doubles, and Richard also winning the handicap singles.

The croquet section AGM is on 2 June. Anyone interested in joining us on the croquet courts, please contact our secretary Jean Farrell 082 856 5010 or our coach Di Schuurman 083 287 4415 for a few lessons first.

Lauren studied at the University of Stellenbosch, where she obtained both a BA Sport Science (2010), and an Honours degree in Biokinetics (2011). After her Honours degree she completed an internship in Durban. She was able to gain experience in a range of different fields; orthopaedic rehabilitation, special population groups, as well as sport specific training.

More recently Lauren has been working abroad, in the private yachting industry where she has been able to utilise her skills in a very different setting.

Lauren’s passion for exercise, which led to Biokinetics, stemmed from a young age. She has been involved in a range of sporting codes. Understanding these sporting codes and the variety of movement patterns associated with each different element of our daily lives allows a deeper understanding of the mechanics involved with injury and prevention thereof.

It is vital for us as individuals of all ages to establish movement patterns into our daily schedules and maintain our bodies in the best possible way to allow us to live a well balanced life.

Being part of a person’s rehabilitation process is both rewarding and inspiring, this is a major motivating factor in the profession of Biokinetics for Lauren.

AREAS OF INTEREST ARE:

• Vitality Fitness Assessments

• Final Phase Orthopaedic Rehabilitation:- Lower back, shoulder, knee, hip, etc. as well as pre- and post-surgery.

• Neurological Rehabilitation:- Parkinson’s Disease, Spinal Cord Injury, Motor Neuron Disease, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, etc.

• Special Populations Guidance & Management:- Pregnancy (pre and post), amputees, children (e.g. low muscle tone, ADHD, postural issues), obesity and the elderly.

• Chronic Disease Management:- Diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, etc.

LETTERS FROM MEMBERS“Together with this letter, I am forwarding a letter from one of the ladies at Tuesday’s lunch, as I think you and the staff might be pleased to read it.

Certainly I also considered that the lunch was delicious and the venue is really gracious. Although unfortunately Mrs. Carter could not join us as she had fallen down the stairs two weeks ago and hurt her back, all of the ladies who were there were very complimentary!

I do just want to add that the ladies who served us were extremely efficient, polite and helpful. Please pass on our thanks to them all, as well as to the chefs in the kitchen.

With our thanks and warm regards.’’- Phyll Spooner – Rustenberg Reunion

“Priscilla and I would like to thank you very much for the most enjoyable evening spent in the Terrace last night. The ambiance, cuisine and service were all outstanding. Sylvia, our waitress, was efficient and attentive, without being intrusive.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.”- Priscilla and Richard – Terrace Restaurant Valentine’s Day Dinner

“We would like to express our sincere appreciation for the professional, efficient and thoroughly pleasant experience we had from you and your entire team. Nothing was ever too much trouble and we have had compliments from many guests.

Congratulations and please convey our comments to every staff member (bar, food, cleaning) who was involved.”- Bruce and Lindsay

“Dear Gareth, thank you! A warm thanks to you and your professional team for a magnificent dinner we had the pleasure of attending last night. Do share our congratulations and appreciation with Bronwyn and all involved, we look forward to the next ‘show’.

Have a great weekend.’’- Fanie Fourie

“Having just returned to office, I am writing on behalf of the English Freemasons of the Western Cape to tell you of our most successful events at your club on Saturday, 3 March, both in the morning and evening.

In particular, the banquet on that evening was superbly co-ordinated and managed by Angie (unfortunately I do not have her surname) and she is to be highly complimented for her efficiency, attention to detail and superb co-operation, both during the day and, in particular, during the evening function.

I shall appreciate if a copy of this communication be shared with her – well done, Angie and my grateful appreciation.”- Kenneth Marcus

“My wife and I had tapas yesterday evening at the Sushi Bar. We both wanted to let you know how absolutely delicious the dishes were. We had patatas bravas, calamari, lamb kofta and salmon pâté .

Wow, it was amazing!! Well done to you and your chefs.’

We'll be back for more!’’- Colin and Carol Cromhout
