FAO in the news Africa: desertification affects one billion people worldwide All Africa, 04/04/12 Desertification directly affects one billion people worldwide particularly in Africa, where two-thirds of the land cover consists of drylands and deserts, says Sirreh Njie, who was deputising for the FAO country representative at a two-day study forum on the development of a national action plan for the implementation of the Great Green Wall for Sahara and the Sahel Initiative held at the Sanyang Nature Camp in Kombo South, West Coast Region. Sustainable forest management Daily Observer, 05/04/12 According to the Liberia Social Audit Report of 2011, more than 1,084,912 hectares of forestland have been allocated by the Liberian government to logging operations as indicated by available statics. In addition to areas allocated to logging operations, other concessions allocated to agribusinesses will have impacts on the nation’s forests as well, given the overlaps with forestlands in different conditions.

A valid permit should be obtained from the gewog administration, thromde or the nearest forest office before burning agricultural debris during fire season, which starts from November and ends by April. Brazil Brazil is a model for the rights of forest communities AlertNet/Reuters, 10/04/12 Brazil is one of the most advanced countries in the world when it comes to legally guaranteeing the rights of forest communities and reducing deforestation, says economist Jeffrey Hatcher in this interview. Who is Brazil's most creative person in business? Forbes, 09/04/12 Who is the most creative Brazilian in business? Many will argue that professional football has become big business and therefore Neymar, young footballer from Santos FC called the New Pelé by the NYT, should be the right answer. Others will claim it must be Brazil’s most famous entrepreneur Eike Batista, the seventh richest man on earth.

However, the right answer is much more exotic than a footballer or an entrepreneur. According to Fast Company Magazine, Brazil’s most creative person in business is a tribal chief who has partnered with Google to save his tribe from the brink of extinction and stop deforestation in Amazon rainforest. Canada B.C. coastal loggers violating softwood lumber deal, U.S. claims The Vancouver Sun, 11/04/12 The American lumber lobby says the B.C. government has been under-charging coastal forest companies for timber harvested on Crown lands to the tune of $70 million a year. B.C. government faces increasing opposition on plans to open forest reserves to loggers The Vancouver Sun, 13/04/12 Province’s discussions to help sawmills ravaged by pine beetles have been limited to just a few stakeholders, official says. Haida Gwaii joint council cuts harvest by 48 per cent The Vancouver Sun, 05/04/12 A new joint council established to govern forest management on Haida Gwaii has made its first decision on how much logging should be allowed within the islands' major forest licence by reducing the level by almost half. Politics trumps reason as B.C. eyes bid to raid protected forests The Globe and Mail, 01/04/12 The fire that destroyed the lumber mill in Burns Lake this winter was sudden and catastrophic, sending a small town into shock. Overnight, 250 jobs vanished. Steele promises to work with 'all Nova Scotians in forestry' The Chronicle Herald, 03/04/12 The provincial government and forestry stakeholders continue to discuss ways to prop up the struggling industry. During his unveiling of the provincial budget to the House of Assembly Tuesday, Finance Minister Graham Steele said in the coming year the government will “work with all Nova Scotians in the forestry sector — from sawmillers, to foresters and harvesters” to move the industry forward. China Fengcheng turns green China Daily, 11/04/12 April is considered the best time for trees planting and afforestation. During this Spring, Fengcheng is going to plant forests covering an area of 2,666 hectares with an investment of 50 million yuan ($7.93 million). Stony deserts coming under control in southwest China Xinhua, 10/04/12 Chen Chunliang was herding a flock of sheep on a hill, watching the animals graze on vegetation where once there was only barren wasteland decaying into stony desert. He never imagined the once sterile land could become fertile.

Fire alarm in Tadoba as blaze rips through home of the tiger The Daily Mail, 05/04/12 A raging forest fire has gobbled up close to 4,000 hectares of Maharashtra's famous Tadoba Andhari tiger project in Chandrapur district, 180 km from Nagpur. Forest fires rage on, animals flee to safety IBN Live, 01/04/12 The forest fires that have been ravaging Dhenkanal forests for the past one month are yet to be brought under control. Hundreds of acres of forests have been affected by devastating fires. Though there is much speculation over the cause of the fire, sources said it was probably man-made; 90 per cent fires in the forests are started by locals inhabiting the forest areas, willingly or unwillingly. Sources added the fires could have also been started by poachers to divert attention from their illegal activities. How Waghpur can earn its stripes The Times of India, 15/04/12 Tigers need forests for habitat and humans for protection. Forests give humans a good environment and livelihood through tourism. The forests need tigers to maintain a balance. And, there's no scope for one of these stakeholders to take precedence in the circle of life. All three will have to develop together to bring out the best in each other.

Indian tribe's Avatar-like battle against mining firm reaches supreme court The Guardian, 08/04/12 Dongria Kondh people pledge to carry on fight to prevent Vedanta Resources from mining bauxite in Niyamgiri hills. ‘Indo-African ties can help prevent climate change’ The Pioneer, 02/04/12 The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education director general, VK Bahuguna, said that the unique Indo-African partnership can provide help to India and the African nations for tackling climate change and desertification. Japan international cooperation agency claims bungling in forest projects, seeks probe The Times of India, 15/04/12 The Japan International Cooperation Agency has expressed concerns over the implementation of its Rs 500-crore UP Participatory Forest Management and Poverty Alleviation Project (ID-P 194), following alleged irregularities in Bundelkhand. The agency also requested the UP government to conduct a high-level probe into the matter. Mumbai for Me: State yet to notify chunk of coast’s mangroves The Times of India, 06/04/12 In a landmark 2005 order, the Bombay High Court directed the state government to map via satellite all mangrove areas in Maharashtra and notify all government-owned mangroves as protected forests. Such lands were to be handed over to the forest department. Research cut short in Indian tiger preserves The New York Times, 03/04/12 Anindya Sinha knows the Bandipur Tiger Reserve’s 900 bonnet macaques by face. Since 2000 he has worked among the monkey troops in the reserve, trying to understand how individual identity informs behavior and group dynamics, and how tourism is affecting the primates’ intricate society. But his research, meant to last 20 years, recently came to a grinding halt. Along with those of around 40 other scientists, Dr. Sinha’s permit to conduct work within the reserve was revoked by the wildlife manager of Karnataka State. Indonesia Deforestation pits elephants against man in Nunukan The Jakarta Globe, 07/04/12 Elephants are increasingly coming into conflict with humans in the East Kalimantan district of Nunukan as more of the forest is cleared away for palm oil plantations and timber estates, a wildlife activist said on Friday. Obscure forest policies creating conflict in Indonesia: Walhi The Jakarta Globe, 13/04/12 The obscure legal framework governing the management of the country’s forests has given rise to hundreds of sometimes deadly conflicts between rural communities and forestry and plantation companies, an environmentalist said on Thursday. SBY aide vows to probe Aceh forest concession The Jakarta Globe, 12/04/12 An aide to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed concern over a recent court ruling that cleared the outgoing Aceh governor’s action in granting a plantation concession in an ostensibly protected forest.

Kenya Government resettles first batch of Mau forest evictees The Daily Nation, 14/04/12 The Ministry of Special Programmes has finally resettled the first batch of Mau forest evictees three years after they were flashed out of the water tower. The 240 evictees were given alternative settlement at Chemusian Farm, Kipkabus in Eldoret East District.
