1. DEFINITIONS Academic Student

An individual aspiring for a career in Information Technology and has enrolled for a Career Program.

Academic Unit The basic unit into which a student shall be registered for during the course of the program enrolled. This could be a Quarter, Semester or multiples of Quarters as constituted in the Program.

Academic Year

The period commencing from 1st October of a year to 30th September of the following year.

Admission The process of enrolling for a program at any International NIIT

education location. Admission is confirmed only after the student pays the requisite fees as prescribed by the education location.

Appraisal

Every Quarter of the Academic Unit will be evaluated. This evaluation is referred to as Appraisal. Appraisals in a Quarter consist of ISAS, Project and Quarter Examination.

Awards

On successful completion of a career program of greater than or equal to 2 years of duration, the student is eligible for a NIIT Suffix Award - DNIIT, PNIIT or GNIIT.

Batch

It is the group of students registered for a specific Academic Unit that is executed according to a specified schedule. Each batch has a batch code, specified commencement date and a distinct batch schedule.

Career Program

A long-term program intended for those who wish to develop/enhance their careers in Information Technology.

Certificate A statement of completion of a program. Certificate is given at the end of a Program, subject to eligibility criteria as applicable for the Program.

CGPA

A Cumulative GPA on a 4 point scale to determine the performance of the student in the Program.

‘CLSOL’ Student Status

A student with a status of CLSOL, is a student whose Registration Expiry Date (RED) of the current Academic Unit has expired. Such a student needs to be re-instated as a Valid student into the batch after paying the applicable Registration Expiry Date Extension Fee as prescribed by the location/center.

Course / Program

A Course/Program consists of one or more Academic Units into which an individual can enroll. The end deliverable is a Certificate/Award subject to eligibility criteria as defined for the Program.

Credit Redemption - Advance Standing Admission

Direct admission to a latter part of a program, which will lead to an Certificate/Award on the basis of satisfying applicable eligibility criteria.

Credit Validity Period (CVP)

The credits accumulated for the Academic Unit by the student has a validity period of a duration of 3 times the duration of that Academic Unit not exceeding 18 months from the date of completion of the same. In case the student fails to register for the next higher Academic Unit within this period, the credits awarded to the student for that Academic Unit shall expire.

‘Defaulter’ Student Status The status of a student who has not paid his/her installments by the due date of the month in which it was due will be changed to „Defaulter‟. Such a student needs to be reinstated into the system after payment of necessary fees.

‘Dropout’ Student Status

The status of a student who is absent for 9 consecutive sessions without obtaining prior written permission from the Location Head will be changed to „DropOut‟. Such a student needs to be reinstated into the system after payment of necessary fees.

Exit

Any student who does not complete the program and leaves the program in between is termed to have exited out of NIIT. Such a student shall be certified for the program ending at the last successfully completed Academic Unit.

GPA

A 4 point grade scale used to determine the performance of the student in each Quarter of the Academic Unit.

Information Search and Analysis Skills

This appraisal is designed to allow the student to develop skills in searching, assimilating, analyzing and presenting the data. The student is evaluated based on a seminar presentation in each quarter.

Installment

The monthly fee payment made by a student as shown in the payment plan on the Confirmed Invoice issued to him at the time of Registration into the Academic Unit.

Non Academic Student

An individual aspiring for knowledge acquisition in a particular area of IT application and has enrolled for a Certificate Program.

PPR

Program Performance Report – Given to each student on successful completion of a career program. It carries the performance details of the Quarters undergone in the program and also depicts the cumulative GPA of the student.

Prerequisite Assessment Examination

This examination tests the applicant‟s knowledge on a set of prerequisite modules prior to admission to a particular program. The applicant needs to be successful in this test to gain admission to the program.

Project

The project is an important aspect of each module designed to allow the student to experiment, learn, think and integrate his/her entire knowledge spectrum and create solutions and

applications. This tests the application skills of the students on the concepts learnt during the module.

PUSRC

Pre-university Senior Certificate or an examination/ qualification considered as being eligible for admission to the Bachelor degree of a university in that particular country.

QPR

Quarter Performance Report – Given to each student of a career program at the end of each Quarter of the Academic Unit. It carries the GPA achieved during the Quarter and performance in each appraisal of the Quarter.

Quarter Credits

The student is awarded 7 Quarter Credits for each Quarter of the Academic Unit that he/she has completed.

Quarter Exam

At the end of each Quarter, the student‟s knowledge on the Quarter contents is tested by means of a Quarter Exam. This test shall evaluate the student‟s knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis and judgment on the concepts learnt during the Quarter.

Quarter Supplementary Examination

This examination tests the student on the contents of a Quarter and shall replace the Quarter Exam marks. This test is attempted by the student in case he/she does not achieve the required grade to pass the Quarter OR in case the student feels the need to improve his/her performance in the Quarter.

Registration

The process of allocation of a batch to a student accompanied by the issuance of relevant course material with its associated Mark of Authenticity label containing the confidential Web Services Key.

Registration Expiry Date

The Registration Expiry Date (RED) of the student shall extend by 2 times the duration of the Academic Unit into which he/she is being registered. The date shall however be calculated based on the Registration Date of the student into that Academic Unit. This determines the time limit that is provided to the student to complete the Academic Unit registered for.

Regular Admission

Admission to a program without any exemption is referred to as a Regular Admission.

Re-instatement

The process involving the conversion of the status of a student

from the status of „DropOut‟ or „Defaulter‟ into „Valid‟ so that the student can continue with his studies at the NIIT education location. The student has to pay the stipulated fees as prescribed by the education location.

Test for Quarter Exemption Examination taken by the students seeking Advance Standing Admission for the purpose of establishing entry level equivalence for all the Quarters of the Academic Units for which exemption is being sought.

Upgrade Admission

Admission to the next higher program in the same location for students who are currently undergoing OR have completed a program

‘Valid’ Student Status

A student who has completed the Admission and Registration formalities and has been currently allocated a batch will have a status of „Valid‟ in the records of NIIT.

Web Services Key The „Mark of Authenticity‟ (MOA) label is issued to the students along with every courseware kit issued, which contains the Courseware Licensing Key (CLK) and a confidential Web Services Key (WSK). This WSK has to be exposed by the student by scratching the hologram on the MOA. The WSK corresponding to the CLK issued to the student has to be updated on the student web site, www.niitstudent.com to enable the student services associated with that WSK.

2 CURRICULUM

2.1 The curriculum referred to as “The MasterMind Series” currently being offered at NIIT Education locations has the following categories of courses:

Career Programs

For individuals who are aspiring for a career in Information Technology. Such students are referred to as Academic Students

Certificate Programs

For individuals who are aspiring knowledge acquisition in a particular specialization area in Information Technology. Such students are referred to as Non-Academic Students

2.2 In its endeavor to offer updated curriculum to students, NIIT constantly keeps pace with the emerging technologies and the changing requirements of the industry. NIIT reserves the right to update its curriculum as deemed fit from time to time.

2.3 Curriculum changes affecting students are put up on the Student Notice Board for a minimum period of 1 month for information to students. Students having objections to changes affecting him/her are required to inform the Head of the Location in writing within 1 month. Students are deemed to have accepted amendments if no objections are received within this period.

2.4 Select programs are available at select Cities/Countries.

3 ADMISSION

3.1 Admission to any program is based on selection. Selection process for any program typically includes a test and an interview. The test is an aptitude and/or technical test as required to gain admission into a Program.

3.2 The types of admissions possible are:

Regular Admission (RG) Upgrade Admission (UG) Advance Standing Admission (AS)

3.3 Admission to a program without any exemption is referred to as a Regular Admission.

3.4 Admission to the next higher program in the same location for students who are currently undergoing OR have completed a program is referred to as Upgrade Admission.

3.5 Direct admission to a latter part of a program, which will lead to an Certificate/Award on the basis of satisfying applicable eligibility criteria, is referred to as Advance Standing Admission.

3.6 In case an Ex-NIIT student, whose CVP has expired needs to continue the program for which he/she had earlier enrolled prior to exiting the program has to clear the requisite Test for Quarter Exemption under the Advance Standing Admission category to pursue his program further.

3.7 Students who possess certificates for having undergone studies similar to that offered by NIIT in some other institution and also possess the normal admission pre-requirement can seek Advance Standing Admission.

3.8 Advance Standing Admission can be granted by a location, if the candidate fulfills the following requirement:

Based on the certificate produced by the candidate, if it can be established that in terms of duration of studies undergone and content of the courses undergone, the student has acquired the requisite capability to cope with further studies at NIIT. Exemptions to the respective Academic Units can be granted only if the student clears the Tests for Quarter Exemption (TQE) for the Quarters of the Academic Units for which the student has requested exemption.

3.9 Admission to a program is non-transferable to any other candidate.

3.10 Admission to any NIIT program is based on the admission norms as defined for the program. However, NIIT reserves the right to refuse admission to an applicant without assigning any reason.

3.11 For admission to programs, which require certain pre-requisites to be fulfilled, where the absence of such pre-requisites would adversely affect the learning of the student from the program, it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that those requirements have been adequately met. NIIT‟s responsibility is limited to informing the candidate of the applicable pre-requisites for each program. The student can attempt the Pre-requisite Assessment Test for the program and successfully clear the same to gain admission to the program.

3.12 Admission to NIIT suffix award programs (DNIIT, PNIIT and GNIIT) is available only to students who have successfully completed PUSRC. GNIIT is only available in select countries.

3.13 A student who has enrolled for a program is implied to have understood:

the contents of the program,

the obligations of students (as stated in the „Student Handbook‟

document)

3.14 NIIT staff can at best suggest the program best suited to the requirements of the Applicant.

3.15 Each student, on admission, is allotted a unique identification number known as Student Id.

3.16 Admission of a student into a program is confirmed only after the student has satisfied the pre-requisite selection criteria as defined for the program and has paid the necessary fees as stipulated at the education location.

3.17 The admission validity is determined by the Credit Validity Period (CVP). The credits accumulated by a student in an Academic Unit have a validity period of 3 times the duration of the Academic Unit not exceeding 18 months from the date of completion of the same.

3.18 At the time of Admission, the student is required to pay the following fee components:

Admission Fee

Registration Fee (of the First Academic Unit of the Program)

Courseware Fee (of the First Academic Unit of the Program)

Tuition Fee (of the First Academic Unit of the Program)

3.19 A provisional Invoice is given to the student at the time of Admission indicating the fee details for the program. As it is just an intent of the student to undergo a Program, a Provisional Invoice is issued. A confirmed Invoice is generated and issued to the student

at the time of Registration into each Academic Unit of the Program.

4. REGISTRATION

4.1. The process of allocation of a batch to a student accompanied with the issuance of the relevant course material with its associated Mark of Authenticity label containing the confidential Web Services Key is referred to as Registration.

4.2. The student has to be registered into an Academic Unit Batch at the beginning of the Academic Unit.

4.3. At the time of Registration, the student has to pay the fees as stipulated by the education location. The different fee components that the student has to pay during registration into an Academic Unit Batch (except for the first Academic Unit of the Program) are:

Tuition Fee

4.4. The confirmed Invoice for the Academic Unit containing the fee details is issued to the student at the time of Registration.

4.5. During the Registration process, the student shall be provided with the courseware kit along with the Mark of Authenticity (MOA). The MOA contains a visible Courseware Licensing Key (CLK) and a confidential Web Services Key (WSK). The student has to expose the WSK by scratching the hologram and provide the same on the NIIT student website at www.niitstudent.com, so that the student services and elearning modules associated with the WSK are activated. This enhances the learning experience of the student at NIIT.

4.6. A student is not allowed to undergo simultaneous Academic Units in a Career Program. In case the student does so, then the credits of only one of the Academic Units shall be considered for continued education at Universities with which NIIT has academic alliances.

4.7. The Registration Expiry Date (RED) determines the time within which the student has to register for the next higher Academic Unit, which has a duration of 2 times the duration of the Academic Unit. If the student doesn‟t register for the next higher Academic Unit within the Registration Expiry Date, then the student shall be

certified for the program up to the last successfully cleared Academic Unit.

4.8. In the event of a fee revision, it is possible that the entire above mentioned fee could be different from the fee with which student was originally admitted to.

5. ACADEMIC UNIT EXECUTION CYCLE

5.1. The contents and methodology are explained and the detailed Milestone Chart pertaining to the Academic Unit is handed over to the student in the Introduction Session of the Academic Unit.

5.2. The student is expected to maintain 100% attendance for all sessions scheduled for the batch in order to get the full benefit from the program. However, the student must discuss the implications of any absence that cannot be avoided, with the faculty, and work out a plan of corrective action well in advance.

5.3. All records pertaining to the student is maintained by the education location in a student management system called “eNCORE”. This software assists in smooth operations at the education location and provides a centralized MIS for Query and Analysis of performance.

5.4. During the tenure of the student undergoing the Program, the student will be in one of the following states at any instance:

VALID

A student who has completed the Admission and Registration formalities, is currently allocated a batch and is attending the course has a status of Valid.

DPOUT (Drop Out)

A student whose name has been struck off the rolls of the batch as a result of continuous absence from the batch for 9 consecutive sessions without prior permission from the Location Head. Such a student needs to be re-instated into the system as a Valid student after payment of the applicable fees before resuming studies.

DEFLT (Fee Defaulter)

A student who has not paid the prescribed fees for the month on or before the 10th of the month as per the payment plan shown on the Confirmed Invoice. Such a student shall be struck of the rolls of the batch and necessarily has to be re-instated into the batch as a Valid student after payment of the applicable fees before resuming studies.

A student who has applied for a Break in between the Academic Units during the conduct of the Program. A break is allowed only at the end of an Academic Unit. Such a student needs to register for the next higher Academic Unit within the Registration Expiry Date.

WTING (Waiting for a batch)

A student who has returned from the status of BREAK and has not yet been allocated a batch due to the non-availability of the batch during the time preferred.

CERTF

A student who has successfully completed the Program and has been awarded the Certificate/Award for the same.

CLSOL

A student with a status of CLSOL, is a student whose Registration Expiry Date (RED) of the current Academic Unit has expired. Such a student needs to be re-instated as a Valid student into the batch after paying the applicable Registration Expiry Date Extension Fee as prescribed by the location/center.

5.5. A transfer is a service that is provided to the student in case he/she needs to change the batch due to various circumstances, which might lead to a break in the student‟s learning effectiveness. To

enable the student to pursue his/her studies without any such hindrance, the service of transfer has been made available. The student shall apply for a transfer as per the prescribed format and shall seek the approval of the Location Head. Such a transfer can be done only from a batch of the current Academic Unit into another batch of the same Academic Unit at the same location.

5.6. Inter-Centre/Location transfers cannot be done within the Academic Unit that the student is currently attending. However, once the current batch is complete, at the source Centre/Location, the student can exit at this stage, receive the program certificate till the Academic Unit completed (subject to eligibility criteria) and then move to the destination Centre/Location and seek a Credit Redemption (Advanced Standing) admission for the next higher program.

5.7. Disciplinary action is taken against any student, if found in the act of misbehavior, within NIIT premises, towards NIIT staff and/or fellow students or using unfair means during examination or use of threatening language with other students or staff.

5.8. Feedback from the student is taken at various levels through both formal and informal processes. In each Academic Unit, a classroom

feedback is conducted once before each Quarter Test. For more information on Grievance Handling, kindly refer to the “Grievance Redressal” section.

5.9. Each Quarter of the Academic Unit has the following Student Appraisals:

Information Search and Analysis Skills (ISAS) Evaluation

The student shall be evaluated on ISAS based on a presentation done on the study topic(s) assigned to him/her in each quarter of the Academic Unit.

Project (PROJ) Evaluation The projects done by the student in the Academic Unit shall be

evaluated. Every module has an associated project on which the student shall be evaluated.

Quarter Exam (Qfx) Each Academic Unit will have the associated number of Quarter Exams (Qfx) at the end of each quarter of the unit. The Qfx will cover the contents from all the modules present in that quarter

of the unit.

5.10. At the end of each Quarter of the Academic Unit, the student‟s performance is calculated as a Grade Point Average on a scale of 4. The legend indicated on the Quarter Performance Report shall be as per the table shown below:

5.11. The following are the Pass Percentages:-

The minimum pass percentage for EACH test component like ISAS, Projects (average of projects in case of more than 1 project) and Quarter Exams is 45 % (Applicable for all students registered w.e.f. Oct 1st, 2008).

For students registered before Oct 1st, 2008 :

• The minimum pass percentage for a student in ISAS & Projects is 45 %

• The minimum pass percentage for a student in Qtr Final Exam is 45 %

• The student must score a Grade Point Average (GPA) of >= 2.0 in a qtr to have been assessed as having completed the Qtr successfully.

Note: The process of overall calculations is the same for both set of

students, as detailed below.

5.12. A student who fails to secure the minimum required GPA of 2.0 in a quarter or feels the need to improve the GPA achieved in the quarter, would need to appear for a Quarter Supplementary Exam (QSE). In such a case, the results of the last QSE attempted by the student for that quarter would be considered. The QSE will carry the same weightage as the Quarter Exam and the Quarter Performance (GPA) shall be recalculated with every result of the QSE for the student for the Quarter. The performance in ISAS and Projects shall be retained. A maximum of 2 attempts per quarter shall be provided to the student upon request. The student shall pay the stipulated fee for each attempt of the QSE.

5.13. With the announcement of the Quarter Results, the Quarter Performance Report is generated from eNCORE and handed over to the student. This report contains details on all the Appraisals attempted by the student during each quarter of the Academic Unit. This report also carries the Grade Point Average (GPA) of the student for the quarter.

5.14. To be eligible to successfully complete the Program, the student must have at least 75% of attendance in the Program. The attendance details are mentioned on the Quarter Performance Report.

5.15. The quarter is formally declared as completed for the student once the QPR is generated from eNCORE and issued. If the current quarter is the last quarter of the current Academic Unit into which the student has been registered, then the student moves ahead into the next Academic Unit. If the current quarter is not the last quarter of the Academic Unit into which the student has been registered, then the student moves into the next quarter component of the same Academic Unit in the sequence. Once the student completes

all the Academic Units of the Program, he/she is said to have completed the program and shall be awarded the Certificate/Award subject to certification norms as defined for the program.

6. CERTIFICATION

6.1. The student is eligible for certification only when the following conditions are fulfilled:

The student has completed the program enrolled for.

The CGPA obtained at the end of the program is at least 2.0.

The student has an attendance of >= 60 % per Academic Unit of

the Program.

The student has cleared all dues payable and obtained necessary

clearance from the Centre/Location.

6.2. For NIIT suffix award (DNIIT, PNIIT and GNIIT) the student has the minimum admission qualification associated with the program:

Pre-university Senior School Certificate (PUSRC) or an

examination considered as being eligible for admission to the 3 year Bachelor degree of a university in that particular country, for admission to DNIIT/PNIIT.

6.3. The student has successfully completed all Academic Units prescribed for the program together with any other academic component required for the same, for example Bachelor‟s degree in the case of GNIIT. Certificate/Award will be issued to the student within 60 days of the program completion.

7. LIBRARY

7.1. Membership of the library (if present) at the NIIT education location is open only to the current students, and staff.

7.2. The student has to pay the refundable caution deposit to become a member.

7.3. All members of the NIIT library can borrow a maximum of one book at a time for a maximum duration of 7 days (inclusive of holidays), without incurring a fine.

7.4. Books from the reference section cannot be issued. Only the books from the lending section can be issued.

7.5. After the lapse of the stipulated borrowing time, a fine will be levied for delay beyond the due date.

7.6. In case the book is not returned, the caution deposit and the fine amount may be used to replace the book in question. In such a case, the library membership of the student may be terminated.

7.7. If a book is returned in a damaged condition, the member may be asked to replace the book or bear the cost of repair as the case may be.

7.8. The membership of the library is not transferable to any other person.

7.9. In case a student loses the library card, he/she will have to inform the librarian in writing of such a loss. In case any book has been

issued on the card before the information is given, then the student is responsible for the book and the rules regarding loss of book will apply. The student will have to get a fresh library card issued for which a duplicate library card fee will have to be paid

7.10. The membership to the library comes to an end under any one of the following situations:

The student obtains the Certificate/Award from NIIT The member asks for a refund of the caution deposit Breach of contract on part of the student

7.11. In case of cessation of membership, the member must apply for a refund of the caution deposit by:

Giving the application in writing Returning the library card Surrendering the original caution deposit receipt Clearing dues, if any

7.12. On clearing all applicable Tests for Quarter Exemption, the student is eligible to get admission into NIIT programs by paying the fees as prescribed by the education location.

8. CANCELLATION OF ADMISSION

8.1. Admission of a candidate to a specific program remains valid till any one of the following conditions occur:

Breach of any of the following terms on the part of the student: Non-payment of any installment due, beyond the 10th of

the month for which it was due. Non-adherence to NIIT norms of discipline and decorum. Absence for 21 consecutive calendar days, from scheduled

sessions, without prior written permission of the Location Head

Using unfair means during examinations or use of threatening language with other students or staff.

If the documents submitted at the time of admission are not found to be genuine.

Any student, who does not complete the program and discontinues the course, is termed to have exited out of NIIT. Such a student may be awarded the lower program certificate as per the applicable policy, upon request and formal application.

A student can exit from the program by giving an application to the Location Head without paying any additional fee.

9. EXIT & RE-ENTRY

9.1. Any student who does not complete the entire program provisionally admitted for and leaves the program without completing the same is termed to have exited out of NIIT.

9.2. A student can exit from the program by giving an application to the Location Head without paying any additional fee.

9.3. A student who fails to register for a higher Academic Unit within the RED after completing the current Academic Unit would be treated as a student who does not wish to continue. Such a student will be made to exit at this point with appropriate Certificate/Award, subject to eligibility.

9.4. Any student who earlier exited after finishing part of the career program has an option to re-enter under the category of Upgrade Admission for completing any higher program. Only completed Academic Unit(s) would be considered at the time of re-entry. Re-entry admission is applicable to students needing to upgrade to a higher program within the CVP. In case the CVP has expired, then he/she has to enroll for the higher program under the category of Advance Standing Admission as per the criteria defined.

9.5. All students seeking re-entry shall be governed by academic and other rules including fee payment as may be in force at the time of re-entry. There is no time limit defined for re-entry admission. At

the time of re-entry admission, the RED is determined for the students.

9.6. Re-entry would be subject to the availability of the desired program at the location. All the rules applicable for re-entry in that location at that time would apply.

10. CHANGES/MODIFICATIONS

10.1. NIIT reserves the right to change the Student Handbook at any time.

10.2. Any changes/modification in the Student Handbook would be displayed on the student notice board for a minimum period of 30 days in the NIIT Location. Any objections to these changes by any student should be brought to the attention of the Location Head

within this period. A student will be considered to have accepted the changes unless such an objection is received.

10.3. It is the student's responsibility to apprise himself/herself of these communications made from time to time, irrespective of whether the student is attending or not attending sessions.

10.4. Due to country specific laws/requirements, any amendment to the Student Handbook so done would be displayed only on the Student Notice Board in NIIT.

11. GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL

11.1. In order to improve the quality of services provided to students, NIIT actively seeks, appreciates and acts upon feedback from students about its services.

11.2. The student is free to approach any NIIT staff member at the location with queries/grievances for assistance and guidance. However, in case satisfactory redressal is not received, you may contact your education Location Head. In case your complaint is still not addressed, you may escalate your suggestion or complaint to

the NIIT Head Office using the “Write To Us” link on the NIIT Student Website www.niitstudent.com or emailing to [email protected].
