The Mogalakwena municipal council needed him to address allegations of political interference and unauthorised spending by the mayor and some councillors. But when the MEC for co-operative government, hu- man settlements and traditional affairs (Coghsta), Ishmael Kgetjepe came to Moko- pane on Tuesday, it was to implement his plan to place the Mogalak- wena municipality under administration. A Gauteng High court interdict obtained by civil rights activist, Madimetja Piet Palje and the Mogalakwena Residents Association, however, saw the MEC, the embattled mayor, Thlalefi Mashemaite and his followers in council scurry from the council chambers with their heads hung low well before the meeting was adjourned. In a strong-worded memorandum present- ed to the municipality and the office of the Premier outside the municipality on Tuesday, Palje and the Residents Association refer to Mashemaite and his followers as a “maraud- ing gang of councillors” and accuse them of interfering with the administration and having stopped service delivery. “... for three months they [have] looted over R2-million of council money,” the memorandum reads. Referring to the KPMG-report which fin- gers Mashemaite and a number of councillors ‘Hands off Mr MEC!’ for misappropriation of council funds, the Residents Association say the Mogalakwena council asked the MEC to intervene on its be- half and “remove these criminals.” The Residents Association feel the MEC chose instead to “act as big brother of this Gang, by interfering in the affairs of the Mu- nicipality.” Now residents demand the resignation of Mashemaite, David Langa, Tolly Mashamaite, Sam Montana and Sonny Tlhako. They insisit that the police take the community seriously and arrest Mashemaite. While they were marching outside the municipal buildings on Tuesday, councillors were getting seated for the special council meeting requested by the MEC. For a short while Kgatjepe and Mashe- maite positioned themselves at the front of the council chambers between the speaker and the MM. Mashemaite’s followers tried to prevent council from following any items on the agenda other than the MEC’s address, which was scheduled as the last item. First councillor Sam Montana argued that the municipality was under administration and that the council had no power and that a council meeting was therefore pointless. It was, however, pointed out that the munici- pality was not under administration yet as the MEC had only announced his intention to intervene in a statement last week. One by one, 28 of Mashemaite’s follow- ers then proceeded to note their disapproval of the agenda items preceding the MEC’s turn to speak. With 32 councillors approving the agenda the meeting proceeded despite the MEC, Mashemaite and his followers walking out after they were presented with copies of the court order. Justice JW Louw ordered that the MEC, his officials and anyone acting on his behalf be interdicted and restrained from interve- ning in the [Mogalakwena Municipality’s] affairs in terms of Section 139(1)(b) of the Constitution and from appointing an administrator. Legal representative for Palje and the Residents’ Association, Schalk Pienaar, ex- plained that there is also a pending application to give permanence to the in- terdict granted. “It is now up to the MEC to lodge opposition and mount a defence to this application,” he explained. The Mogalakwena municipal council needed him to address allegations of political interference and unauthorised spending by the mayor and some councillors. But when the MEC for co-operative government, hu-man settlements and traditional affairs (Coghsta), Ishmael Kgetjepe came to Moko-pane on Tuesday, it was to implement his plan to place the Mogalak-wena municipality under administration.

In a strong-worded memorandum present-ed to the municipality and the office of the Premier outside the municipality on Tuesday, Palje and the Residents Association refer to Mashemaite and his followers as a “maraud-ing gang of councillors” and accuse them of interfering with the administration and having stopped service delivery. “... for three months they [have] looted over R2-million of council money,” the memorandum reads.

Referring to the KPMG-report which fin-gers Mashemaite and a number of councillors

for misappropriation of council funds, the Residents Association say the Mogalakwena council asked the MEC to intervene on its be-half and “remove these criminals.”

The Residents Association feel the MEC chose instead to “act as big brother of this Gang, by interfering in the affairs of the Mu-nicipality.”

Now residents demand the resignation of Mashemaite, David Langa, Tolly Mashamaite, Sam Montana and Sonny Tlhako. They insisit that the police take the community seriously and arrest Mashemaite.

While they were marching outside the municipal buildings on Tuesday, councillors were getting seated for the special council meeting requested by the MEC.

First councillor Sam Montana argued that the municipality was under administration and that the council had no power and that a council meeting was therefore pointless. It was, however, pointed out that the munici-pality was not under administration yet as

LEPHALALE - The Thusong service centre at the Mokurunyane village just outside Lephalale was officially opened last Thursday by Limpopo public works MEC, Dickson Masemola.

According to Rudzani Muthambi, spokes person for the premier’s office this is the 28th Thusong service centre built with the aim to bring services to the people.

She explained that the community of Mokurunyane no longer have to travel the 60km to Lephalale to apply for ID’s or pass-ports at Home Affairs. The service centre also includes a parliamentary and municipal helpdesk, a library and also houses the office of the department of agriculture.

“We believe strongly that people should come first, services and information should be easily accessible to the whole commu-nity.”

At the event a moment of silence was also observed for councillor, Stef Snyders who died of a heart attack on Wednesday.

LEPHALALE - A Draft Environmental Impact Assessment report for the proposed Thabametsi coal-fired power station, by Independent Power Producer (IPP) Newshelf 1282 (Pty) Ltd is open for public viewing.

The project was previously presented by Exxaro Resources, who sub-sequently selected Newshelf 1282 as a preferred IPP for the develop-ment of the power station.

The purpose of the proposed IPP Thabametsi power station is to pro-vide base load power to the national electricity grid. The power station will have a capacity of up to 1200MW, to be developed in two phases of 600MW each. The proposed site (currently owned by Exxaro) is located 26 km north-west of Lephalale.

A Draft EIA Report has been prepared by Savannah Environmen-tal and is available for public review at the Lephalale Public Library, Marapong Community Library, Manketti Lodge, Ferroland Management Offices and AgriSA offices.

The report is also available electronically on the website ww.savannahSA.com/projects. The 40-day period for public review is from 12 March 2014 – 23 April 2014.

All interested and affected parties are invited to attend a public open day and public meeting on Tuesday at the Mogol Club from 15:00 – 18:00. The public meeting will start at 18:00.

Grootegeluk back on trackWork at the Grootegeluk mine in Lephalale returned to normal this week after pro-duction was impacted by the higher than normal, heavy rains experienced earlier in March.

According to Mzila Mthenjane, Exxaro executive head for Strategy & Corporate Af-fairs, production fell drastically during the worst of the rains. “Since then production has steadily increased and over the past few days it has returned to normal.”

“There has been no material impact on the supply of coal to the Matimba power sta-tion or to other customers, including the export market. This is due to the availability of sufficient stockpiles which were used,” she added.

Mthenjane further explained that the water that remained in the pit is currently being used as processing water in the beneficiation plant. This has negated the need for the mine to draw raw water from its normal source, the Mokolo Dam.

The Grootegeluk mine is situated in a low rainfall area of the country and accumulating water in the pit sump forms part of the normal operating practice, thereby reducing raw wa-ter consumption from the Mokolo Dam.

“The amount of rain received in March, however, with a peak downpour of 230mm in a single day, exceeds the 1:50 year flood designs and therefore led to flooding of the pit bot-tom. Sound water and flood controls enabled the operation to return to acceptable produc-tion levels soon after the rains and thereafter to the normal production levels being achieved now,” Mthenjane explained.

Three get jail time for stealingLeon Gono (29) was sentenced to four years imprisonment in the Mokopane Regional Court this week for burglary. He was found guilty of stealing a plasma TV, a Sony music system and four pairs of Caella shoes from a house in August last year.

In another incident three days later a motor vehicle was stolen from a business premises in town. Lesiba Jerry Mogolo (29) was arrested in this regard and was this week sentenced to five years impris-onment for theft of a motor vehicle.

Sello Joel Mphahlele (28) was also sentenced to five years imprisonment for theft of a motor vehicle in August 2013. This vehicle was recovered shortly after being stolen.

16 years for theftMini Mokebe (35) and Given Lekalakala were each sentenced to 16 years imprisonment after being con-victed of charges of theft out of a motor vehicle in June last year.

The two were found guilty of breaking into a car parked in the Wimpy Moko-pane parking area and stealing a firearm, an Apple Ipod, two-way radios, a torch, a calculator and cash in the Mokopane Regional Court this week.

When they were arrested they still had the stolen firearm in their possession and were thus charged for being in pos-session of an unlicensed firearm. For this they received another two year sentence each which will be served concurrently with their other sentence.

Nuwe Toyota Corolla - beproefde resep verbeter

Mokopane Destiny Academy is proud to congratulate its first university graduate, Ilze Janse van Rensburg. She is indeed setting a high standard as she graduated with honours from the University of Potchefstroom recently. She earned Golden Key membership in all four years of her attendance. She is currently employed as Grade 1 teacher at Bryandale Primary school. It just goes to show that Christian education does not cost - it pays!

Fulfilling her destiny…

Tien jaar gelede, op Nuwejaarsoggend 2004, bid ek alleen in my kamer toe ek skielik ‘n helder visioen van my pa in ‘n rolstoel sien. In my geestesoog gewaar ek ‘n kankergewas in sy liggaam. ‘n Toneel van aftakeling én genesing speel voor my af. “Verbeel ek my, Here?” huil ek. God lei my na Esegiël 33:33. Die ge-was was so groot soos sy vuis.

Jou pa is ‘n kers in ‘n kelder.” Intussen boer my skrander, moedige ma en haar vriendin vir maande alleen.

My hart was rougeskaaf.

Soos tien jaar terug, toe my vriende in Pretoria namens my vir my pa in hospitaal gaan kuier het, was my ouers se bure in hierdie tyd my arms waar ek nie kon bykom nie.

Eerder vloede as droogtes, seg pa Sarel.

Women’s summit inspiresLEPHALALE - A Women of Destiny summit was held on Friday at the Living Letters Church in Lephalale. Pastor Willem Papo launched the Sarah Ministry for Women as an initiative to impact the lives of women in the area.

He encouraged women to have a vision for their lives, families and finances. “It does not matter where you are now; focus on where you will be in the end. For this we need faith,” he said. “Delay is not denial, the future God has in store for you exists even if you do not see it yet.”

He encouraged women to stand together. “Help and support each other, the wealth of ev-ery family is in the hands of godly women. But sometimes pain is the passage to the promise and many of you are hurting. Keep the end in mind and God will see you through.”

Afterward women who attended the summit told Northern News that the initiative for a women’s ministry in Lephalale is long overdue. “It is time for change and it is time for women to make a difference in and around Lephalale.”

UKrugies wys hul staal by SA’s
