ecological support systems

• Detroit ranked 43rd out of the top 50largest US cities for its capacity to achieve

sustainability.

• Wayne State University used the Forumon Contemporary Issues in Society to

create the Living Green Task Force.

• The Task Force was comprised of faculty,

students, and staff 

• They created a set of guidelines on five

topics: Transportation, Recycling, Waste

Stream Analysis and Mass Balance,

Energy Conservation, and EnvironmentalSustainability.

• Other Campus initiatives include:

• College of Engineering offers Masters in

Renewable Energy

• Three courses are offered:

 – IST 2310 Living in the Environment

 – CE 6150 Hydrologic Analysis and Design

 – CE 5150 Soils and Soil Pollution

Campus Cleanup

• Ergonomically designed ashtrays outside

campus buildings

• Easy-to-use trash cans at parking

structures

• Signs to encourage pride and cleanup

• Designated outdoor smoking areas with

ashtrays to prevent cigarette butts.

• Reduce number of miles students, staff,

and faculty drive by encouraging

alternative means of transport

• Improve awareness of campus

transportation services

• Public Safety: Use of hydrogen powered

fuel cell vehicles.

Recycling

• Create comprehensive plan for a recycling

program on campus.

• Identify existing programs

• Identify infrastructure necessary to support

campus wide recycling program

• Identify and contractual possibilities with

vendors

• Educate campus about recycling

programs

• Minimize waste and chemical disposal

costs

• Reduce occupational risks, purchase of 

chemicals, mercury pollution, and use of 

toxic chemicals

• Donate waste paint

• Recycle solvents

• Incorporate additional energy

conservation measures into the planned

design of new Engineering DevelopmentCenter.

• Develop energy-efficiency policies to

guide all future construction• Design and implement the Wayne State

Energy Reduction Program and

Campuswide Lighting Initiative.

Can Library Do?

• Put turn off light signs in all rooms that

have own light switch

• Recycle bound materials that are

withdrawn from the collection

• Recycle colored paper that is used for 

instruction and workshops

• Turn off all computers at night
