Hello and Welcome! As educators we are continually searching for ways to grow in our instructional practice. We are excited that you have chosen to do just that as part of our Professional Development Summer Learning Series! We celebrate our fifth year of summer learning in North Kansas City Schools. Thank you for stepping up to the plate to impact your game on behalf of students. Our goal over the next several months is to inspire and challenge you with content that will impact your instruction, thereby student learning. We hope that as you dedicate time for your own professional growth, you will find all sessions to be both rejuvenating and educational. We are grateful for the many leaders of learning, including teachers, principals, and Central Office administrators, who have prepared these quality sessions and made this opportunity possible. In order to receive your choice for compensation, you will need to attend all scheduled sessions, sign in at the door and complete the appropriate evaluation through My Learning Plan. Confirmation of your attendance and our record of your compensation will be provided late-August. Expect payment to arrive in your September paycheck. A fundamental belief that inspires our summer work is that the most complex problems of schools are best solved by educators collaborating and learning together. The Summer Learning Series provides a tremendous opportunity to train for the upcoming season and focus on student success. Thank you for joining us!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Summer Learning Series?

This is an opportunity for all certified staff members to extend their learning around topics that will impact instructional practice, thereby student learning. Input from teachers, principals, CTTN, the Professional Development Committee, and a variety of representative departments helped to inform the final composition of the Summer Learning Series.

This program reflects both of our Summer Learning events and is divided into two sessions: June offerings

(beginning on page 2), and our annual Summer Academy to be held the week of July 13 (beginning on page 18).

Why do we need a Summer Learning Series?

We currently have more professional development needs than can adequately be met. Providing choice and ensuring aligned opportunities for adult learning to occur outside of the contractual school year is cost-effective and helps to solve this problem.

There is also a need to reduce the number of substitutes being utilized throughout the district on any given day.

A driving force for the Academy was the recognition that principals and teachers remaining in their buildings, working with their own students, will ultimately have the greatest impact on student learning.

What kind of compensation is available?

After surveying staff members, it became clear that options for compensation must be made available to best meet individual needs. Upon enrollment in My Learning Plan, staff members select from payment of $20.77 per hour or earning Professional Growth Course credit when a total of 16 hours have been acquired.

Who are our session presenters?

Throughout the Summer Learning Series, teacher leaders, principals, instructional coordinators, and educational consultants have prepared a multitude of sessions for you to choose from in extending your professional learning. We are grateful for these leaders of learning and look forward to the continual sharing of best practices.

Will I need my laptop?

Be sure to bring your laptop and charger for use within sessions and to complete evaluations through My Learning Plan. These evaluations are important as they ensure your compensation and inform our presenters and offerings.

3:30-6:30 Your Building – PBS Teams – Grades K-12 Facilitator – Lisa Friesen (This is optional for building teams; however, participants should enroll as part of a building PBS team). This session focuses on Positive Behavior Supports and the structure it provides to teach and reinforce positive behaviors for all students. The outcome of the session will be to provide PBS teams with time to prepare for the beginning of the school year. Schools teach lessons at the beginning of the year and throughout the year related to their school-wide expectations. Teams will have a facilitated work time to create lessons for the school-wide expectations and set plans and/or complete action step items to jump start the school year.

3:30-6:30 Chapel Hill LMC – “Refresh” Training on Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) – Grades K-2 Facilitator – Sherrie Brown This class is designed for teachers who have been using the Grades K-2 LLI materials without formal training and would like further understanding as to the purpose of each of the components on the Day 1 and Day 2 instructional plan. We will discuss how to implement the program with fidelity and how to make adjustments to fit your situation. You will also learn some “tips of the trade” and organizational tips that might help you make instructional decisions and be able to “fit more in”. (Teachers who completed the introductory training may also sign up for this course.)
