Quarter 2 January 2014
Math News with Mrs. Lenhart
The second quarter was again a lot of hard work. As a whole, the students focused on solving equations, fractions, and graphing linear equations. The third quarter will be another packed, hard-working quarter with a final fourth quarter calming down. 6th grade will be working on integers and solving equations. Math 1 will be focusing on graphing along with transformations then transition into proportions and ratios. Math 2 will be working on proportions, ratios, and percentages while Math 3 will finish their fraction and move into integers and solving equations. Students will be looking forward to the "Math Amazing Race" after the state testing in March so remind your student to work really hard to get to enjoy this yearly tradition!
Band News with Mrs. McCall
We had a wonderful concert in December. We are now
working on solos and honor band pieces. The solo
contest is scheduled for February 27th at 3:30pm. All
students in band have been given a solo at their ability
level.
Josh and Jake were selected to SWIBA Honor Band in
November. We are very proud of these two gentlemen,
as well as the others for the effort put forth during try-
outs.
In March, the Corner Conference Honor Band will
practice and perform at East Mills. (Kennedy, Ami,
Damita, Dharma, Emily W., McKenzie, Zoe, Treyton,
Braxton, Mason, Blu, Sophie, Brady, Jaxon, RJ, Jake,
Josh, Bryson and Cody).
Music Carnival is scheduled for March 1. Bring the
whole family and enjoy the evening. The proceeds will
go toward the Tennessee trip in 2015.
Expository Writing!
Oh, it’s so much fun to write!
All middle school English classes have been
learning about the expository essay. What is
expository you may ask? Expository means to
explain and to inform. How did the classes go
about this process? To begin, all classes watched
an informative Animal Planet video about reptiles
and animals. The star of this video was the late
Steve Irwin, also known as the Crocodile Hunter.
Students learned about the following elements:
1. Topic sentence
2. Transition words (since, when, until,
recently, finally, furthermore, etc)
3. Transitioning from paragraph to paragraph
4. Including examples and information from
the video to support details and topic
sentence
5. Plagiarism
6. Bibliography and citing sources using
MLA format

Reading News with Mrs. Lueth
2nd quarter is gone, but not forgotten. Reading students remained very busy throughout the quarter. 6th graders were reading “Where the Red Fern Grows,” while the 7th graders worked on poetry. The favorite part of this unit for most students was making paper quilts which are on display in my classroom. 8th graders also worked on poetry, studying works that deal with feelings such as hate, anger, and delight. Students in both 7th and 8th grade learned some of the key concepts of poetry such as rhyme and alliteration. The AR store was a big success once again! Students seem to enjoy having the opportunity to use their points to shop for some fun items – especially food.
Chorus News with Mrs. Emberton
Second quarter was a time of concert preparations for
members of the Nishnabotna Chorus. On October 22
the 7th
& 8th grade choir traveled to Fremont Mills to
rehearse with students from all over southwest Iowa.
They practiced all afternoon under the direction of a
guest director from Iowa Western Community College.
At 5:00 the students presented a concert for the public
to attend. The mass choir performed 5 pieces
including “Windy Nights” and “You’re the One That I
Want”. Several of the schools also performed
selections of their own, including Nishnabotna. It was
fun to sing with other students, and to hear the choirs
from the other schools.
On Veteran’s Day, both choirs performed for the all-
school assembly. The 6th graders sang “God Bless the
USA” and the 7th & 8
th graders performed “The Grand
Old Flag”.
December 9th was the date of the annual Christmas
concert. The 6th grade choir sang “Christmas Time is
Coming”, “Still, Still, Still”, and “Brighten My Soul with
Sunshine”. The 7th & 8
th grade performed “Fun! Fun!
Fun!” and “Feliz Navidad”. We featured several
soloists that night – Es, Kristina, Emily and Logan H.
Mc McCall accompanied both choirs.
I want to thank all the parents and students for baking
cookies for the cookie-walk and all the people that
bought them. I know the ones I bought were really
good!
3rd
quarter we will be working on contest music, honor
choirs and the play. Please put these dates on your
calendar:
February 27 – NMS Solo Contest
March 11 – Honor Choir in Treynor
March 28 – NMS Play – “Sleeping Beauty”

Fun in Social Studies Class! (Ms. Leiding)
Prior to our Thanksgiving break we had a special fun day of learning in Social Studies. Students worked in partners or small groups and rotated through stations which included completing puzzle maps of the United States and Latin America, quizzing each other over different aspects of history or geography, playing a "geography terms" matching game, and playing State Capitals Sequence. This was a fun way to break up our normal routine while working on various aspects of Social Studies.

6th Grade: We just finished the unit on Ecology and learned about how the ecosystems have changed the different terrestrial biomes and the characteristics of each biome. 7th Grade: Finished working on Cells and Heredity and how patterns of heredity are passed from parents to offspring in a predictable pattern with use of the Punnett Square. The last part of the unit covered DNA and modern genetics and how DNA is a set of instructions for making different cell parts. 8th Grade: We finished the unit on The Changing Surface of Earth. The students have learned about the different landforms and viewpoints of Earth and the different effects that each has on Earth’s surface. Advance Science I We finished covering the Life of a Cell. We learned about what an atom is, the important role of water to cells and the role of carbon compounds in organisms. Library News with Mrs. Peeler
Students continue to check out a lot of
books. We are hoping to get more
ordered before the end of the year. If
students or parents have any
recommendations for quality reading
material that would be appropriate for
middle school students, please let me
know.
I have had an awesome year so far
and I hope to have many more great
years here at the middle school. Thank
you to all the students, staff and
parents who make it so wonderful!
Make sure you are always
encouraging your children to read!
And make reading a part of your life
as well!

P O E M N E W S
Recently our very own English teacher, Mrs. Madison, entered a seasonal poetry contest for a national children’s magazine. There were over 1,100 entries. This is her whimsical piece titled, “Sweetdilly Summer”, in the voice of Dr. Seuss which was one of the suggested options for the contest. Mrs. Madison wishes to thank the students for their support and very “honest” constructive criticism.
Sweetdilly summer to you. Yes, you,
students at Willigeroo. Will you…
like Coach Barnaby Blox, play Little League in polka dot socks?
Will you… like bus driver Dudley
McDool, shout, “C-a-n-n-o-n B-a-l-l,”
plunging into the pool? Will you… Yes, you,
be a busy book wormer like your librarian, Miss Twiggle May
Thurmer? Or will you,
Yes, you, and you and you,
choose other things this summer to do?
Will you… Catch fireflies
on a moonlit eve? Eat watermelon
and spit the seeds? Will you…
Sell lemonade from a clubhouse
stand? Fly kites on a
beach? Squish your toes in
sand? Will you…
Slurp sweet slushies ‘til your lips turn
blue? Mimic the animals at Pepperzink zoo?
Will you…. Giggle and laugh
and laugh and giggle? Do the Summer Cha Cha or the Earthworm Wiggle?
Ah, summertime, summertime,
sweet, silly and fun. Fireworks, funnel cakes,
blue skies and sun. Sweetdilly summer.
Sweetdilly summer to you. Yes, you,
students at Willigeroo Zipdiddy hurray. Be off and away.
Your sweetdilly summer starts today.

Santa’s Helpers Deliver Stockings to Students
Prior to our winter break, Student Council
members sold candy grams and holiday locker
decorations to students, staff, and family
members. The money raised from the sale of
these items was used to purchase treats to
fill special stockings made and donated by Ms.
Leiding’s mother. Locker decorations were
hung on lockers and candy grams were
distributed to students during a special
assembly prior to the break. In addition, each
student in the middle school received the
stocking filled with goodies. Student Council
members hope this helped make each
student’s holiday a little brighter!

Fall Dance Was Fun for All!
On Tuesday, November 26, the Student Council sponsored a fall dance. With
approximately 60-65 students in attendance, it proved to be a huge success. Admission to
the dance was two nonperishable food items. These were used to help the local food pantry
and area families. The Student Council would like to thank all those families that provided
snacks, as well as the chaperones – Teresa Hughes, Amy Barker, Danny and Sheila Propp, Rick
Barton, Tina Apperson, Toni Bruce, Deb Robinson, Michelle Miller, and Cyndee Thompson.
Thanks also go out to Tommie Thompson for being an awesome DJ, to Brandi for help with
transportation and announcements, to Chuck for driving the bus, and to Jamie for helping
get things ready. Because of all of you, everyone had a lot of fun – and got their 5 day
Thanksgiving weekend off to a great start!
