IntroductionDesign, as I know it, is boundless. While creating something, I am unfazed by the boundaries of disciplines and domains. I apply all my wits and creativity to design my way out of a given situation. In the following pages I present an eclectic selection of my recent projects.
I invite you to take a look at the brief descriptions of my projects contained in this portfolio. I will be happy to provide you with more information.
Thank you very much.

Scheme to Build Capability for Market-pull Innovations in Thales
Transforming an Organization
Thales, a predominantly technology driven company, set up a design thinking center to build capability for market pull innovations. The goal of the project was to develop a scheme for the newly established design thinking center to enable it to introduce design thinking within the company, and to do projects using design thinking.
The proposed scheme addresses three aspects of design thinking by its designs and proposals – methods and techniques, skills and mind-set. The scheme also provides, among other things, means to budget project requirements, and to measure the commitment of different business units in doing design thinking projects. The measuring part is especially important in current times, when Thales’ top management want different business units to approach innovation holistically.

Identifying New Investment Opportunities for Saapi
Uncovering Growth Opportunities
Sappi, a multi-national paper and pulp company, was seeking to diversify its offering portfolio by investing in new high growth businesses. The goal of the project was to generate attractive search areas, and eligible investment ideas to expose company’s management to a range of possibilities, which they could further explore.
The project identified several interesting technologies, socio-cultural trends, and competitor moves; and generated a number of eligible investment ideas, ranging from microfibril based 3D printing franchise business, to a service to deliver purchases of travellers in their homes when they return home.

Strategic Roadmap and Product Recommendations for Maars
Re-inventing an Existing Business
Maars, a partitioning system provider, was experiencing decline in its revenue due to several reasons - a nearly dated product portfolio, competition from new players especially former furniture companies, and slowdown in real estate development in its target markets. The goal of the project was to advise Maars about suitable strategy, and suitable product portfolio to help the company remain competitive in a world of changed realities.
The strategic road-map provided Maars with a concrete plan to make transition from just being a partitioning system provider, to becoming a workplace ambience designer. Further, a number of product concepts were generated from the combination of four promising search areas derived from research – open privacy, identity, virtual connectivity, and connection with nature.

A Product Concept for Improving the Lives of Psychotic Patients
Touching Lives by Design
The goal of the project was to design a product for psychotic patients living independently, so that they have a calmer ‘going out’ experience. Extensive research, including contact with an independently living psychotic patient, went into the development of the concept.
The final concept was a ‘music-player cum tap-sensing’ device meant to create an engaging activity-feedback loop for the user, thus allowing him/her to subdue distracting thoughts. The concept was selected for development by Parnassia which is the largest psychiatric institution group in the Netherlands. The final design won the prestigious 2013 Rotterdam Design Prize.

Understanding current context
...however hard we try to feel safe by intending to be in control, there’s something that often eludes us! The elusiveness stems from our mind’s inability to differentiate between real and imagined events. [excerpt]
“ I want service users to have a calmer ‘going out’ experience, by enabling them to subdue the pseudo-meanings that pop up in their mind as they continue pursuit of their destination.

Service Disruption Management Plan for Schiphol Airport
Designing Experience
Schiphol airport is one of the busiest transfer hubs of Europe. Flight service disruptions caused due to factors such as heavy snowfall, terrorist threat or aircraft technical problem, could soon turn into mayhem, resulting in frustrating passenger experience. The goal of the project was to develop a plan to integrate current channels of communication, and potentially develop new channels and services for better disruption management.
The plan was developed by exploring possibilities in the three search areas - efficiently manage passenger flow, provide personalized information, and turn waiting time into pleasant experience (so that time seems to fly). With a state of art information architecture at its heart, the final plan consisted of three modules - Guide, Facilitate and Care, with each module meant to be applied successively based on the severity of service disruption.

Yaygo: Mobility Service for San Francisco Bay Area
Yaygo is a mobility service based on the concept of ‘demand responsive transit’, and it leverages the ubiquity of smartphones to provide ride service that combines convenience of a taxi and affordability of a bus. The minimum viable product meant to provide critical information about user behavior and market demand for the offering, was a free mobile app which allowed users to share rides on cabs. The business plan was a finalist for ‘Big Ideas’ event and a semi-finalist for ‘Bplan’ event (organised at UC Berkeley, USA).
The gamified system was designed to trigger internal motivation in participants, to do fitness training regularly. It leverages three key elements of self-determination theory - competence, autonomy and relatedness, to do so. The system consists of a social networking platform at its heart, using which participants can set their personal goals, track their progress, and send (receive) gifts/challenges to (from) each other.
