Definition:A gifted and talented student is a
child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who:
Exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area
Possesses an unusual capacity for leadership; or
Excels in specific academic field
Characteristics:
Student Goal:
These products will be advanced in relation to students of similar age, experience, or environment.
The Referral Process• Referrals can be submitted any time
during the school year.• Referrals may be made by teachers,
counselors, parents, students or other interested persons.
• Paperwork for referrals will be available from the campus GT coordinator
• Parents must sign consent for assessment prior to the completion of the evaluation process.
Assessment Information:• Mental ability/cognitive • Academic/achievement: math,
science, social studies and reading
• Rating scale of student characteristics
• Parent Observation • Student created material from
content areas – scored with a rubric
District Selection Committee• Collected data is reviewed by the
District Selection Committee.• Recommendation for placement
is made by the committee based on results of assessments and scores on student products.
Parent Notification• Parents will be notified in writing of the
results of the assessment. • Parents will be notified if their child did
meet criteria for placement in the GT Program including the area or areas identified.
• Parents must sign permission for placement.
Parents will be notified if their child does not meet criteria for placement in the GT Program.
Transfer StudentsStudents previously identified as
GT in their former district will be served upon entry into NISD following the verification of services from the previous district.
Professional DevelopmentAll faculty at NISD are required to
complete Gifted and Talented Training.
New TeachersNew teachers are required to complete
30 hours (5 days) of initial training through the Region VII ESC. The professional development is offered online and face to face training.

It is important to get registered as soon as possible by visiting www.esc7.net
Six Hour Annual Update:Teachers that have completed the 30 hour
initial training are required to complete a six hour update annually.
The professional development can be completed through the Region VII ESC through an online course or face to face training. To register, please visit: www.esc7.net
In addition, NISD offers fall and spring professional development (Eduphoria).
