FOREWORD
It gives us great pleasure to bring forth the annual report for the year 2012-2013.
Our dedicated colleagues in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation have been
working hard to develop this facility for the benefit of public and animals as well. We are
indebted to all of them. We express our gratitude to the following officials and
dignitaries of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, without the help of whom
this zoo would never have taken shape.

I N T R O D U C T I O N
Bahinabai Choudhary Pranisangrahalay, previously known as Snake Park &
Aviary, is a Small Zoo established by Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation
recognized by the Central Zoo Authority. It was inaugurated on 30th
December 1989 and
officially declared open to public on 1st Jan.1990. This zoo has witnessed continuously
increasing visitorship since then.
LOCATION
A total 7.5-Acre land has been earmarked for this project. It caters for the Twin
City of Pimpri-Chinchwad and surrounding areas, developed mainly due to rapid
urbanization and industrial growth. This township is extended towards north of Pune
City along the National Highway No.4, joining Pune and Mumbai. The captive
population of this city is around 17 Lakh. This zoo is the only animal facility in the area.
It is situated 4 km. Eastwards from the town of Akurdi, 5 km. Northeast from Chinchwad
railway station, 7 km. West from Bhosari and 6 km North of Pimpri.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF THE ZOO
1. To educate students and visitors about importance of wildlife and emphasize the
need for conservation of nature and natural resources.
2. To rescue snakes, birds and sometimes other animals that enter into human
habitation and release them back in the wild.
3. To undertake breeding programmes of different snake species and release the
offspring back into the declining population areas.
4. To organize guided tours for school children and provide necessary information
lectures, demonstrations, slide shows and related printed material.
5. To disseminate the current information on Biodiversity amongst the general public.
HEALTH, HYGIENE AND SAFETY MEASURES
Food and drinking water is examined daily.
De-worming and vaccination is done quarterly.
De-beaking and nail cutting of birds is being undertaken every two months.
Perching is being repaired regularly.
Animal waste is recycled to produce compost.
Lawns, flowering beds etc. are grown on bio-compost instead of chemicals.
Cage Resting and disinfection is done as per requirement.
Exhibit furnishings are modified annually and/or changed whenever necessary.
Heat convectors, air coolers, humidifiers and air conditioners are used during
climatic extremities.
Volunteers and staff control the vandalism.
Plastic Carry bags are banned in the zoo.
TRAINING PROGRAMMES
Mr. Anil Raut from Zoo attended a Specialized theme based training programme
for Zoo Keepers on regional basis Management of wild animals in captivity with
special reference to enrichment of animal enclosure conducted by Ahmadabad
Zoo between 03/12/2012 to 17/12/2012.
Mr.Anil Khaire and Dr. Satish Gore attended the Training Programme on
Incidence Response System and Simulation Exercise from 28/01/2013 to
01/02/2013. This course was jointly organized by National Institute of Disaster
Management and Yeshwantrao Chavan Academy of Development
Administration (Yashada).
Mr.Anil Khaire and Mr. Jalindher Sarawade along with some zoo volunteers
attended training on Disaster Management from 6th
March 2013 to 9th
March
2013, Organized by the Fire Brigade Department of the PCMC.
RESEARCH
Mr. Anil Khaire Co-authored the paper published in International Journal of Tropical
Medicine & Health titled ‘Severe Neurotoxic Envenoming Cardiac Complication
after the Bite of a ‘Sind Krait’ (Bungarus cf. sindanus) in Maharashtra, India.’
PCMC Zoo is collaborating with National Centre for Cell Sciences (NCCS) for
Sample Identification and Analysis of Gut Flora of Snakes.

VISITORS
The zoo remains closed for visitors on every Tuesday. It is open to the public
from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is extended during summer vacation from 10:30 am to
7.00 pm.
Entry Fee Adults : Rs. 10:00 (Ten Rupees).
Children : Rs. 05:00 (Five Rupees).

MASTERPLAN COMMITTEE
Masterplan Committee has been formed to prepare a long term Masterplan of the
Zoo. The team consists of the following members.

A budget of Rs. 2 Crore was sanctioned for the financial year 2011-12 for the
implementation of first phase of Master plan. This phase includes development of
Entrance Complex, Office Building, Compound Wall, Parking, Cloak Rooms and
Internal Roads. The work is on its way of completion. The layout plan is being revised as
per the CZA guidelines of 2009 and 2012.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES
A special lecture on Management of Birds in Captivity was delivered to the
participants of the Ornithology Course, jointly organized by Abasaheb Garware College
and Ila Foundation, Pune.
The lecture delivered to newly joined security guards in the PCMC about the
wildlife in PCMC and how to tackle the problem regarding the wildlife.
CELEBRATIONS
Nagapanchami Mahotsav was celebrated on 23rd
July, 2012. Different
competitions were organized for ladies like Traditional Cooking, Foogadi, Mehendi,
Traditional Dress ups and Speech Competition, etc. The competition was lead by Ex.
Mayor and Corporator Mrs. Mangala Kadam.
A series of different workshops and lectures were held in the zoo on the occasion
of Wildlife Week 2012. On 7th
October, a workshop was held for snake-friends and
wildlife enthusiasts in the city. Nearly 50 snake-friends participated in this programme.
The program was convened by Surendra Shelke. Dr. Pawan Salve discussed the
sustainable lifestyle for conservation of biodiversity. Mr. Amit Pawshe, Wildlife
Biologist spoke on Bird Diversity. He also guided on safe measures of rescuing Birds.
OUTREACH PROGRAMMES
TOURISM GRID
Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has identified 22 tourist places and is
forming a tourism grid of the city. This zoo is major component of the grid and therefore
shall be given special attention in terms of development priority and appropriate budget.
GREEN BRIGADE
The population of the city has crossed 17 lakh. There has been a
great need to outreach to most of them by way of public participation.
The zoo authorities have taken keen interest in to this outreach
programmes. Accordingly a GREEN BRIGADE is formed. This group
organizes a monthly Katta at the convenient place. Spe cial
programmes are conducted under this scheme. The response is
amazing. Accordingly, the first meeting of the green brigade was
convened at the zoo on20th January 2013.It and was headed by the
Additional Commissioner and was attended by over 50 participants .
Several issues on the natural resources of the city were discussed.
