Division 10 North Officer Training Conference

Although it was my first time attending, many current valiant leaders, most of whom are my friends, did an exceptional job at persuading me to attend. My time at OTC began with a lecture from Mr. Kenneth Lord, an awesome motivational speaker and a paragon of virtue. He looked debonair in his suit and got me listening attentively. I participated in a multitude of educational workshops in which I was taught about the kinds of characteristics a leader epitomizes. One of the most important attributes that I recalled was direction. Having the vision to break out of the norm and aim for high standards, then the wherewithal to lay out the quintessential steps necessary to get there, an indis-pensible characteristic of what it means to be a good leader. In addition, I had the opportunity to encounter a contingent of leaders from different schools, most of which I did not know. However, that was what made OTC unforgettable. Furthermore, it was even more delightful to play compulsory icebreaker games and write heartfelt postcards. In the end, OTC created a sense of intimacy between my friends I proudly call my family. It was an experience I am glad I spent the time without compunction.”

“ICON 2014 in Anaheim was my first and last ICON as a Key Clubber. Not only was it in Anaheim (cheaper and closer) and Cali-Nev-Ha was the Host District, but I also got to meet so many amazing and friendly Key Clubbers. In fact, that was my favorite part! I met people from different states and even outside of the US. Some of my favorite moments included the TWO dances that they held at ICON, meeting Canadians, being able to eat anywhere you wanted for meals, and spending 4th of July with other Key Clubbers! I also got to witness my new friend from Georgia run for International Trustee and even got to meet the immediate past and 2014-2015 International Board personally. I especially also liked how the Key Clubbers in our district bonded. For business professional days, everyone in CNH would wear all black clothing and gold ties. This made us look unified as well as left a positive impression on the other districts and made us stand out in a good way. CNH also had arguably the most spirit. At general sessions, we were always the loudest in reciting the How Do You Feel? cheer. I also found out that many district don't even do cheers and that just made me feel proud that I was a part of such a spirited district. Besides the usual workshops and speakers, ICON also has its own traditions, most notably, pin trading and taking selfies with Paco, the ICON Penguin! Hardcore pin traders had binders full of pins collected throughout the years from almost all the districts, while beginners like me just tried to get as many pins as possible in a few days time. Paco the Penguin was passed around from Key Clubber to Key Clubber and was basically the ICON mascot! Another memorable experience was spending the day after ICON at Disney-land with my new Region 7 family at a discounted price of $75! Although not many people from our division went, I do highly recommend attending DCON or ICON in the future if you get the chance. From walking around Downtown Disney, to going on Space Mountain 3 times, to taking a picture with Elsa and Anna, to watching my friend crash into a glass door, to taking selfies with my Nor Cal roommate with her selfie stick, to meeting a Hollister model, to playing Cards Against Humanity, to being crushed in hugs, to photo bombing, to meeting someone with the same birthday, and much much more...you will definitely make memories and friendships that you will remem-ber, like I did! Although some of them are not from Southern California, I still talk and video chat with many of the Key Clubbers I met at ICON and have even hung out with some of them multiple times since! Luckily, next year is the 100th anniversary for Kiwanis and because of this special occasion, next year's ICON will be held in Indianapolis. The cool thing is, besides Key Clubbers, Circle K members and all other groups under Kiwanis will be in attendance as well, so I might see some of you guys as well as reunite with my ICON friends! Hope to see you all soon and enjoy your summer!”-Annika Yip

“ICON was absolutely amazing! I loved meeting new people and learning even more about Key Club International. I felt lucky to be there and I seriously can't wait for Indianapolis 2015! It is an experience I will never forget and I hope I have 2 more left!” -Katie Chin

“ICON was an absolute blast. There was so much to learn from other key clubbers all over the world. I'm had a blast making friends as well as getting together with old friends from last year's ICON in Washington, DC. There was a lot that I learned there and I look forward to sharing this information with toy at odd July DCM!” -Mariela Carillo

“One of the most interesting things about ICON was how invested people got in pin trading. Almost every time I rode in a crowded elevator of key clubbers from around the country, I would hear "So, does anyone wanna trade pins?". It's honestly crazy how deep people get into it. I was lucky enough to have random people just give me three or four pins on the first day because they felt bad that I had none, but after that I was on my own in the trading world. It's a hardcore business.” - Caroline Bescoby

“Everyone assembled at 5:30 in the morning to start the set up. Because it was the fire station and not a place set up for people to eat, the first thing we had to do was hard, physical labor. We spent quite a long time dragging tables and chairs, placing tablecloths and placemats, and arranging how people would sit. Next we decorated the place by blowing up balloons and taping them to poles around the entrance. By the time we had the whole place set up, we were very close to opening time. We were served a delicious breakfast (pancakes, sausages, and slices of canta-loupe ) and quickly prepared to greet the hordes of hungry people. During the long service time, people had many different jobs. A few were chosen to collect the tickets and instruct the people arriving on how to receive their food. Those who worked at the grill cooked the sausages and plopped pancake batter onto stove, making them fresh for the people waiting in line. Others still cleared away left over trash, wiped the tables, and replaced the placemats so that new arrivals would not have to sit at a messy place. After several hours, when the few stragglers had received their food, the reverse of set-up began; we put away the tables and chairs, threw out any leftovers, and mopped the floor, thus concluding our 31st pancake breakfast.”
