Amazon AWS Overview
The AWS probe monitors the health and performance of the specific subsystems of Amazon's EC2 and S3 systems. One (or more) Amazon AWS accounts are required to run this probe.
Monitoring Capabilities
The following parameters are monitored by the Amazon AWS probe:

Configuration Top View
The configuration user interface consists of the following three main sections:
■ Navigation tree
■ Settings pane
■ Buttons pane
The navigation tree, located on the left of the interface, is used to navigate to various settings panes. The settings panes, located on the right are used to edit settings for the various aspects of the probe. The buttons pane contains the buttons used to commit changes to the probe and to get help.

Setup View
The Setup View is used to configure settings global to the probe. These are :
■ URL for the Cloud Watch interface
■ Discovery Interval
Field Description
Cloud Watch URL Specifies the location of EC2 CloudWatch metrics
Discovery Interval Discovery of new EC2 instances takes place automatically, the interval specifies when to run the discovery process.
The discovery process can take a few seconds to run.
Health View

The Health View is used to configure settings for reading the Amazon AWS health RSS feeds. The available settings are:
Field Description
Active specifies whether the polling of AWS health is active or not
URL specifies the base URL for the RSS feeds and the Sampling Interval.
Sampling Interval specifies when to run the RSS requests.
Clouds View
The Clouds Setup View is used to manage CloudWatchers. Typically, each CloudWatcher in the probe corresponds to a single account. A CloudWatcher manages the acquisition of CloudWatch values and the Deployment and S3 tests. Having multiple CloudWatchers allows the probe to monitoring multiple accounts. Click the Add CloudWatcher button to add a new CloudWatcher. Click the Delete Selected button to delete one or more CloudWatchers.

CloudWatcher View
Each CloudWatcher is configured using this interface. The available settings are:

Active checkbox specifies that this CloudWatcher, and its contained Deployment Performance and S3 systems are active (these can be individually deactivated).

checkbox specifies that any EC2 instances that are discovered are automatically enabled. This can be further refined using the Exclude and Include values

Credentials View
The Credentials for each CloudWatcher are configured using this interface.

Displays account information provided by AWS
Show To see the Secret Access Key value, select the Show check box.
This checkbox will be unselected automatically when navigating away from this view

S3 View
The file transfer tests for S3 are configured using this interface. The probe copies a file to the specified S3 location and then copies the same file back from the S3 location. The available settings are:
Field Description
Active specifies whether this S3 transfer test is active
URL specifies the location of Amazon's S3 service
Test Bucket name of the S3 bucket to transfer the test file to and from
Test File Name name of the file to transfer. This file is located in the probe directory, the probe ships with a single 100,000 KB file
Sampling Interval specifies how often to run the test.

Deployment Performance View
The ec2 deployment performance tests are configured using this interface.
The probe starts an instance on EC2 and measures the time until the instance is running, the instance is then immediately terminated. The available settings are:
Field Description
Active specifies whether this deployment performance test is active or not
Image Name name of the EC2 image to deploy
Instance Type EC2 Instance type to use
Key Key Name to use
Sampling Interval specifies how often to run the test
As of now, Amazon charges a full hour for any fraction of an hour that an instance is deployed. A warning is shown to indicate when the interval is less than an hour.

CloudWatcher Samplers View
Each CloudWatcher's Samplers View is used to manage Samplers. Click (>) button to add a Sampler from the available samplers. Actual Samplers are created in the Samplers section, directly below the Configuration node, See Samplers View for more details.

Samplers View
The Samplers View is used to manage Samplers that are used by the CloudWatchers. Each Sampler is responsible for the timing of the acquisition of values. The sampler also specifies what CloudWatch Dimension, and keys are to be used.
Click Add Sampler button to add a sampler. Click Delete Selected button to remove the selected samplers.

Sampler View
Each Sampler is configured using its respective view. The available settings are:

ID The ID must be globally unique
Sampling Interval specifies how often to acquire data.
CloudWatch period Amazon CloudWatch period to use ,Amazon internally samples every minute (as of this writing)
For example, a Sampling Interval of 10 minutes and a Period of two minutes would return 5 values, one for each two minute period.

Manage Dimensions View
Each Sampler can sample one or more dimensions (See AWS documentation for CloudWatch Dimensions). The interface is used to add and delete dimensions owned by the sampler.
Click Add Dimension button to add a dimension. Click Delete Selected button to remove the selected dimensions.

Dimension View
Each Dimension is configured using its respective view. The available settings are:

Dimension Specifies one of three available CloudWatch Dimensions:
■ InstanceId
■ InstanceType

Dimension Keys The dimension keys are added and deleted using this view. A dimension must have one or more keys.
The validity of the keys is the responsibility of the user.

Templates View
Each Sampler Dimension can use multiple Monitor Templates, these are added and removed using this view.
Click the (>) button to add a monitoring template from the available templates. Click the (<) button to remove a monitoring template.

Monitor Template Read-only View
This view displays what measurements are being acquired for a given Sampler Dimension. This is a read only view, the Monitoring Templates are configured using the Monitor Template View.

Monitor Templates View
This view is used to add and remove Monitor Templates. Each Monitor Template specifies what CloudWatch metrics and statistics are acquired.
Click Add Monitoring Template button to add a template. Click Delete Selected button to remove the selected monitoring templates.

Template View
Each Monitor Template specifies what metrics and statistics are acquired from CloudWatch. Each template must have at least one metric and one statistic. Alarms for these measurements are specified in the contained alarms. Alarms are managed in the Alarm Management and Alarm views.

Each Alarm is configured using its respective view. The available settings are:
