For more than half a century, the Nikkiso Group has been

providing original technologies and products in order to

meet the demands of our customers, society, and the times

we live in. In the key industrial sectors, the Group has been

engaged in such areas as energy and petrochemicals, andour high-pressure and powder-handling technologies have

supported the research and manufacture of IT and other

high-tech products. In the medical equipment industry, we

have been involved mainly in hemodialysis-related

products, and in the aircraft industry, components found

in airplane engine thrust reversers feature carbon fibers

developed by Nikkiso. Recently, we have made strides in

the new field of nanotechnology. We endeavor to have

greater sensitivity in understanding what is expected of

Column Japans First Artificial Heart

In 1960, a dog in the laboratory at the KimotoSurgical Department of the University of Tokyowas the focus of a great deal of attention.

Beating somewhat stiffly but steadily in keepingthe dog alive, this artificial heart was the firstever made in Japan. Responsible for creatingJapans first artificial heart was the fluidtechnology of the just-established Nikkisocompany. The achievement of the artificial heartalso represented the moment that Nikkisostepped up to a new starting line in its efforts todevelop original technologies not seen anywhereelse.

The desire to provide our customers withproducts that exactly meet their needs thispassion and spirit of our researchers has beenhanded down from the past to the present, andwill be passed on in a great many fields togenerations in the future.

The operations of the Nikkiso Group are carried out in

three business divisions: the Industrial Division,

Aerospace Division, and Medical Division. Each division

has established its own business operations system

that makes optimal use of the highly specialized

technologies held by each.

Each division develops its own technologies, carries

out its own marketing, and undertakes efforts to

enhance its own production system. At the same time,

each division cooperates with the other divisions, and

through the mutual exchange of technologies and

development of their respective businesses, the

divisions promote creative business operations and

develop many lines of products that are highly

acclaimed by customers in the global market.

Supporting the business operations of the three

Nikkiso divisions are the Administration Division and

the wholly owned subsidiary Nikkiso Giken Co., Ltd.

The Administration Division comprises sections

dedicated to supporting the business operations of

the Nikkiso Group divisions by handling specific

administrative tasks, such as general affairs,

personnel affairs, legal matters, intellectual property,

and financial affairs.

With the aim of creating new products that make

optimal use of the Nikkiso Groups strengths, Nikkiso

Strength, Light Weight, DurabilityWe are ready to meet the highly complexdemands of aircraft manufacturers,with our original technologies to fully utilizethe advantage of CFRP.

CFRP Expanding the Sphere of Possibility

Cascades are the components of the thrust reversers

provided for commercial aircraft to control engine airflow

during landing. Approximately a quarter of a century ago,

the Aerospace Division produced the first cascades made

of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic). Using CFRP

cascades, we were able to reduce the component weight

by two-thirds without compromising the strength and

durability previously provided by metal, thereby improving

fuel efficiency.

Nowadays, Nikkiso composite cascades have gainedworldwide recognition for superb qualities in advanced

design, analysis, curing, manufacturing techniques, and

quality control. The majority of commercial aircraft

manufacturers choose our products, including Boeing and

Airbus.

Other than cascades, our CFRP products have also been

applied to the main wings in components like ailerons

the Medical Division continues to improve dialysis

A state-of-the-art computerized hemodialysis

machine, data communication systems, powder

Plants in Japan

We have three primary production plants in Japan. The Higashimurayama Plant manufactures fluid

equipment, water conditioning systems, multi-layer electronic component manufacturing equipment, and

particle analysis instruments. The Shizuoka Plant manufactures a broad range of medical equipment and

devices and composite products for aircrafts and aerospace. The Kanazawa Plant manufactures hollow

fiber dialyzers and dialysate. Being captive factories of respective business divisions, these facilities also

function as research centers, pursuing the commercialization of technologies based on customer needs.

With the latest equipment and detailed quality management, the staff works as a team to improve

productivity. We also focus on environmental protection issues including energy and natural resource

conservation and waste control.

The Shizuoka Plant includes the ShizuokaMedical Factory, which manufactures arange of medical equipment and devicesfor the Medical Division, and the AerospaceProducts Factory, which manufacturesproducts for the Aerospace Division.Dialysis machines, which circulate bloodoutside the body to purify, and artificialpancreases (Blood glucose controller)that continuously monitor and controlblood sugar levels, are a mong thesystems developed, designed, andproduced at the Shizuoka MedicalFactory.While production factories for the bloodtubing lines are located in Vietnam andThailand, department of design andquality control are located in Shizuoka. Toensure a constant supply of high-qualityparts, Nikkiso manufactures the majorityof important components necessary forthese medical devices in-house.In addition to the plants efforts toimprove profitability by developing humanresources with a wide range of skills,Technical Support Department wasestablished for customers technicalneeds. This department promotes closecooperation with sales departments andservice departments, and embracescustomers feedback for new productdevelopment.

At the Aerospace Products Factory, wedevelop, design, and manufactureCascade, the thrust reverser componentfor commercial aircrafts, as well as othercarbon fiber-reinforced plastic products.Our quality standards and accuratedelivery times have led to numerouscommendations from our valuedcustomers, including the Boeing Company.

The Higashimurayama Plant producespumps, water conditioning systems,ceramic component processingsystems, and particle characterizationinstruments for the Industrial Division.Here special-purpose pumps answeringthe diverse needs of customers, suchas leak-free canned motor non-sealpumps, are developed, designed, andproduced. In recent years theproduction systems have beenupgraded and larger equipment hasbeen introduced to meet demand forlarger-scale pumps.The plant is also where Nikkisodevelops, designs, and produces waterconditioning systems for power plants,as well as the isostatic presses andother equipment needed formanufacturing fine ceramic multilayerelectronic components found in mobilephones and other digital consumerelectronics products.Even as we continue to build on ourexisting technologies as core, wealways strive for flexibility to thinkoutside the box as we take on thechallenge of new technologicaldevelopment. Higashimurayama PlantTraining RoomTo ensure safe use of Nikkiso productsand even greater customer confidence,the Higashimurayama Plant hasestablished training facilities for thoseusing pumps or Nikkiso instrumentationand equipment at power generatingfacilities.

At the Pump Training Room, traineesare divided into beginner, intermediate,and expert classes for training onvarious pumps, including leak-freecanned motor centrifugal pumps andthe high-accuracy metering pumps.

These programs have proven verypopular among our customers.Equipped with silica analyzers,dissolved oxygen analyzers, online ionchromatography systems and otherequipment, training rooms devoted totopics such as water conditioningsystems offer training appropriate tocustomer requirements.
