Andy Wolfe appointed Dean of new Diocesan

Younger Leadership College

Mr Andy Wolfe, Vice

Principal at Emmanuel

Church of England

School in Nottingham, has been

appointed Dean of a new College

being founded to support the

development of younger leaders

across the Diocese of Southwell

& Nottingham. The College,

which will be established in the

autumn, is part of a wider

diocesan vision for Growing

Disciples – wider, younger and

deeper. The College will develop

a variety of programmes and

courses, along with mentoring

resources, for those aged 15-30.

The Bishop of Southwell &

Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul

Williams, said, “I am delighted

that we have been able to make a

substantial appointment to this

enthralling new venture. Andy

Wolfe is someone with

considerable experience in

education and a compelling

vision for the development of

younger leaders who want to

make a difference in the world,

inspired by faith in Jesus Christ.

This isn’t just about developing

new and younger leaders for the

church, but helping people use

their gifts and passions in shaping

culture and transforming society

wherever they are called to

serve.”

Andy Wolfe is currently Vice

Principal at The Nottingham

Emmanuel School, a 1000-pupil

Church of England secondary

school in central Nottingham. He

oversees Teaching and Learning

across the whole school alongside

leading on the school’s

Chaplaincy/Ethos work. He

studied music and theology at

Durham before later entering the

teaching profession. Having

previously worked as a lecturer in

FE and HE, he began as Head of

Music at Emmanuel in 2006, and

has been a core member of the

Senior Leadership Team since

2009. Andy has also contributed

significantly to national

educational discourse in relation

to Christian Distinctiveness and

faith development, with his recent

publications highlighting

Emmanuel’s pioneering approach

to faith development in young

people.

AMANDA LEES. Amanda is

married to Michael and they have

four children, Francesca (13),

Sebastian (11), Frederick (9) and

Roland (6). She will be serving

her title with The Revd Hazel

Robinson in the Blidworth and

Rainworth Benefice.

PHILIP HOWSON. Philip will

arrive with his family, three cats,

and a dog and will be serving

his title with The Revd Zoe

Burton in the Ollerton with

Boughton Benefice.

CHRIS PEARSE. Chris is

married to Trine and they have

two children, Gracie (2) and

Joshua (2 months). Chris will be

is married to Menekse and they

are the amused owners of a white

standard poodle. Chris is serving

Growing

disciples at

the Big E Day

The Big E day, the Diocese of

Southwell and Nottingham’s

annual training day for those

involved in children and youth

ministry, is all about growing

disciples this year. Taking place on

Saturday 8th October at Southwell

Minster School, the day will bring delegates together for worship,

resourcing, and training to support their ministry.

The choice of nearly 30 different workshop titles has something for

everyone as the day focuses on growing disciples through youth,

children and family work. We will be growing younger with input on

working with young children, developing faith, and under 5’s

ministry. We will look at growing deeper through youth and children’s

resources and initiatives to help establish and deepen faith in the

young. And we will be growing wider, considering evangelism and

mission through schools, special events, holiday clubs and all-age

worship. All this, along with practical sessions on materials to use,

puppets, craft ideas, starting out in children’s work, developing teams,

and plenty more makes this a day not to be missed. People from all

Christian churches are welcome to join in with us as we seek to grow

disciples together.

Nick Harding, Children’s Ministry Adviser, said:

‘We are already excited about this special day, and the privilege of

working with 200 delegates from a huge range of churches. We want

to see the church growing disciples who are young, committed, and

who can share the Gospel themselves, and this day will support all the

great work that takes place week-in, week-out with families, young

people and children around Nottinghamshire and beyond.’

This year Big E Day does not clash with half term holidays and is a

slightly shorter day (9.30-2.45), so please encourage as many people

as possible to come from your church and churches around you – we

look forward to welcoming you!

Every year we seek to welcome

and train new Stewards. As a

Guild we are responsible for the

ministry of welcome to all

visitors to our magnificent

church .Visitors to the Minster

come from all over the world.

They come for many reasons,

some because it is a place of

prayer,others because they are

church or cathedral enthusiasts,

and yet others simply to look

around .Helping people to

understand the Minster as a

building and a church is one of

the satisfactions of being a

Steward.

Stewards come from all parts of

the Diocese and further afield.

They give a commitment to

being responsible for their

allotted duty periods. Most of all

they enjoy meeting and greeting

people from all walks of life and

be capable of developing a

rapport with visitors to our

beautiful Minster .

Southwell Minster

Guild of Stewards

The Retreat House continues to be open throughout the summer

for individuals and groups to come for personal retreat, times

of quiet refreshment, and for our In House Quiet Days. Quiet

time and prayer is at the heart of what we do, with two services of

Holy Communion every week, on Mondays at 9am and Wednesdays

at 12.15pm, followed by light refreshments, and our Contemplative

Prayer meeting for silent meditation on Monday evenings.

But we also host other types of meeting. Recently, we welcomed

Bishop Paul and 21 men to a fish and chip supper and a talk by the

Bishop on ‘The Beauty of Teams’. We are also pleased to provide a

central meeting place for the musicians during Southwell Music

Festival Week. If you are looking for a venue for a group to meet,

then do get in touch to find out what we can offer.

QUIET DAY: CELEBRATING GOD AND SCIENCE

Our next Quiet Day (an opportunity to step apart from the usual

routine of life for a few hours) is on Saturday 9th July 2016 and we

will be Celebrating God and Science.

The day will be led by The Revd John Allister. John is the vicar of St

Jude’s, Mapperley. He spent five years as a physics teacher before

ordination, and is passionate about helping people think with a more

clearly Christian worldview.

John says, “Science and faith are often seen as contradictory, but

passages such as Psalm 104, Isaiah 40, and Colossians 1 show science

as helping us to worship God more. On 9th July, we will explore this

tension both Biblically and theologically, with plenty of time for quiet

reflection and celebration.”

The day will begin at 9.45am with coffee and ends at 4.00pm with a

cup of tea. Please bring your own lunch. To book a place on this day,

Many of the people from

churches in this diocese

who have visited

Burundi in the last four years

have met Archbishop Bernard

Ntahoturi and his eldest son Steve

and his family. They have a

number of connections with

Nottinghamshire, including the

diocesan link, as well as friends

futher afield in the UK.

Until last year, Steve and his wife

Christine and their two children

lived in Bujumbura the capital of

Burundi where Steve was

working at the new Bujumbura

Christian University. Christine’s

father, a retired priest who used to

live in Hucknall, is the Vice

Chancellor of the University.

Gedling deanery sponsors a

student at the university which

also has close links with St John’s

School of Mission in Nottingham.

Steve, Christine, Chozeh and

Azaph Muneza currently live in

the North of England. Steve is

serving as a part-time associate

minister with the Durham North

team in Durham Diocese. Both

he and Christine are studying in

the UK. Christine is doing a

Master’s degree in intercultural

communication and Steve a PhD

on “Ethical Entrepreneurship for

integral and sustainable

development”. Through this

research Steve aims to help

Christians in Burundi live out

their faith on a daily basis as well

as addressing poverty through

entrepreneurship.

Steve and Christine write:

“Burundi continues to need as

much prayers, friendship and

support as ever. The security

situation continues to be volatile

and the economic environment

has considerably deteriorated.

The Church in Burundi faces

huge challenges as a huge number

of Church members have left the

country to find refuge in

neighbouring countries and those

who remain are under tremendous

security and financial pressure.”

In January of this year, Chozeh

and Asaph were baptised in

Durham, when Steve’s parents

were over from Burundi.

Christine’s sister lives in

Woodborough and the family are

planning on a trip to see her in the

summer. It is hoped that they will

combine this with a visit to St

James Church, Porchester who

maintain links with the Diocese

of Matana the Archbishop’s

diocese.

Growing Disciples Training for Ministry & Mission - July 2016

Growing DisciplesYou are invited to a meeting on

Development.

There will be an opportunity for

an update on +Paul’s vision and

strategy for growing disciples in

the diocese.

There will also be time for Q &

A’s with Richard.

The Growing Disciples agenda is

for all parishes and contexts, but

this is an opportunity for focused

engagement from an outer estate

perspective.

to maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the

house, and attending to many practical aspects of the

hospitality provided for day and overnight guests.

The Frances Ashton Charity will

consider a modest grant for

almost any purpose which is

causing financial hardship. For

example, we could help with:

• The cost of a new pair of glasses

• A respite care break for a

disabled family dependent

• The cost of a family holiday

• The cost of repairing a broken

boiler

Particular priorities for support

include unforeseeable

emergencies, medical or care

needs for the applicant or their

dependents. In some cases, the

trustees may be able to help at

any point during the year. There

are a few exceptions where the

Charity is unable to help, for

example private education.

If you are a serving or retired

member of the clergy of the

Church of England or the

widow/widower of a member of

the clergy who has passed away

and you have a hardship, please

ask us for an application form and

the full guidance notes.

The Parish Look Up Tool has been one of the most used resources

provided by CUF in recent years. It provides information on

deprivation statistics for parishes across England and compares them

with other parishes both nationally and locally.

Go to http://www2.cuf.org.uk/poverty-lookup-tool and simply enter

your postcode to bring up data on the poverty indicators in your area.

the 15-30 age range across the

Diocese, through their churches,

schools, universities and

workplaces. The College’s

compelling and transformative

vision for developing younger

leadership will provide the

inspiration and energy necessary

to draw together, equip and

commission a huge number of

leaders, deepening their journey

of faith and releasing them into

their calling both within the

church, and as they seek to serve

and impact the society in which

they live.”

One of the first things Andy will

be doing is to draw on the

experience and expertise of those

who are already working in

various ways to develop younger

leaders in schools, colleges and

churches across the diocese. He

will also be forming a team of

associates to share in teaching,

formation and mentoring, so that

young people can interact closely

with more experienced leaders

from a diverse range of

backgrounds and contexts.

Alongside his appointment as

Dean, Andy will be continuing

his educational leadership work

in a part-time national role of

Networks Manager for the

Church of England Foundation

for Educational Leadership,

developing school-to-school

support networks across the UK

for the Church of England. This

combination of leadership at a

local and national level will have

a hugely positive impact on the

Younger Leadership College

through the synergy between the

two projects.

Bishop Paul said, “As a diocese

we continue to be committed to

developing leaders of all ages,

but this is a unique opportunity to

invest in the growth of a whole

new generation of leaders who

can share in making a

distinctively Christian

contribution to shaping our

society for the common good.”

The College will be launched in

the autumn, incorporating a new

diocesan-wide intern programme.

Lead thieves

strike again

Parishes are being urged to

be vigilant after lead

thieves struck again.

Weeks after an attack on

Cropwell Bishop St Giles, there

was an attempted theft has been

reported at Norwell St Laurence.

Churchwardens are urged to be

extra vigilant and to alert people

in neighbouring properties to

keep an eye out for suspicious

activity in and around the

church. Check access routes,

ensure Smartwater is being used,

remove ladders and dustbins and

secure anything that might help

the thieves get on to vulnerable

roof areas.

Please report any incidents to the

DAC Secretary and/or

Archdeacon as soon as you have

notified the police and your

insurers.
