• a. Called Bohr’s theory (1913)

•                                 -Won Nobel Prize for his atomic theory in 1922

•  Affiliated with: Copenhagen University in Copenhagen, Denmark

• Studied under J.J. Thompson

Model of the Atom• Combined Rutherford’s ideas about the nucleus with

Planck’s theories • The model shows the atom with a dense positively

charged nucleus containing protons and neutrons and the negatively charged electrons surrounding it

-First to show that electrons traveled in separate orbits and that the number of electrons in the outer orbit determined the properties.

 -Bohr’s atomic model is the most widely accepted and used.

Liquid Droplet Theory • Nuclear Fission• Stated that a liquid drop is an accurate representation of

an atoms nucleus.• This theory became very important in the 1930s when

scientists first began attempting to split uranium atoms

Atomic Spectra• Wavelengths of light emitted when an atom releases energy

- Bohr noticed that only a few colors of light were given off

  -Red, green and violet • Showed that electrons are not randomly situated

-They stay at specific places, now called energy levels• Electrons can’t have elliptical orbits or else they will eventually crash into the nucleus
