Beginning with only a nine square grid of points, a compositional circuitry emerges. Axonometric lines introduce three dimensional space as an abstract composition begins a transformation. Walls and columns begin to shape space and take on an architectural implications as planes offer layers of intricacy, shadow, and protection. Finally, volume introduces scale and marks the beginnings of an architecture education.

gravity propelled racer

Given one week to design, one to build and a team budget of 50 dollars three designers by the name BNW (Brown, Nepveux, Wright) set out to re-define the soapbox derby car. We bent as many rules as needed to achieve an idea. Yes, we welded. Yes, it ended up 11 feet long, but it was the only racer with an operating door, shocks, and a driver that forms a symbiotic relation with machine.

1 jazz is the expression of being unique within a context of music - the building should be expressively engaged with its surroundings2 acting as an icon of rejuvenation for this area, the building is visible from greenwood street upon entering the Greenwood district 3 the exhibit will act as a guide throughout the building and create the effect of time’s passing, sliding, overlapping, and progressing. 4 the exhibit and music hall will be visited sporadically, Love’s club needs a steady influx of customers: deserving prominent space on site5 most of the site will not be used for building mass - alternative uses (i.e. jazz festival space/park) have been considered and developed.

Music cannot fully depict anything like love or desire. But music can reproduce, through solely technical means and by dealing with the synchronization of time and tension in music, the emotive “flow” of a human world of feelings and history. The hall of fame should leave little to read, decipher or understand. Through a synchronized design of flowing space this museum will just make sense to those that walk its halls.

A business district plagued by surface parking, dangerous cross streets, and no sense of place or identity. By creating a conglomerate of half-mile radius zones each containing different types living and entertainment the design encourages walking and interaction among zones. Active square footage was pulled toward the street by integrating parking into an urban mass of business, life, and entertainment.

I had the honor of being selected by our professors as the leader of the library district that we appropriately termed the “librarea”. This district included a new public library for the city of Tulsa, a library park above an expansive parking garage, a senior activity center, grocery, and skate park.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, step right up and experience Coney Island’s new Parachute Pavilion. A bipartite design welcomes visitors to the excitement of the beach by allowing them to slowly meet the horizon, while also offering an escape from the harsh sun of the beach and boardwalk. The Parachute Pavilion creates an experiential reference to the history and imagery of Coney Island and the Parachute Jump, a place where the two distinct economic groups of the area’s historic development came together to form one mass.

The Athenian word for drama meant “action” or “to do.” In place of design of a sustainable residence, I propose a single Light Rail Car designed as an expandable stage where plays will be established and performed in the open-minded spaces of public transit stations, mobilizing the awareness and anticipating participation of individual citizens. These sustainable campaigns will be planted in cities with budding mass transit lines (light rail) such as Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Minneapolis, Seattle, Denver, St. Louis, and Austin, and can later spread to larger cities with more established lines. The public arena of the transit station becomes the urban culture’s theatre. “Shakespeare in the Park” becomes an environmentally geared “Shakespeare on the Streets”.

Local universities’ Literature, Environmental Studies, Drama, Graphic Design, and Architecture departments will collaborate to create productions inspired by the myriad of contemporary concerns addressed in Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies and histories. Audiences will be exposed to theories of citizen participation, stronger leadership, concepts of urban planning that integrate social responsibilities and re-establish the idea of density in the city, as well as standard ways to incorporate Sustainable Living into their current home or next home purchase. It will be essential for citizens to feel that public spaces, as well as their own private space are part of their communal ownership and responsibility. We can hope for nothing more from our citizens than to oblige the oath pledged by new citizens of ancient Athens, “We will leave this city not less but greater, better, and more beautiful than it was left to us.”

After constructing the model and becoming more familar with construction documents I assisted the project architect with ASI’s and redlines on other projects.

Project Team - Brian Thomas, Shannon West, Andrew McCready, Jason Walker

With no previous knowledge of the project (essentially acting as a contractor) I was asked to build a detail section model from a set of construction documents. After making a cardboard study model to decide the scale I presented a schedule and budget for completion and began construction.

During construction of the model I discovered a discrepancy in the window schedule that saved the contractor from having to cut and fill an already completed cmu wall. As an intern with little profes-sional experience this project allowed me to familiarize myself with the organization of construction documents as well as to hone my sense of craft and knowledge of building details.

Strategic voids in the plan allow pockets of light and nature to enter in, while simultaneously adding depth and visual interest to a long street façade. Large North-facing windows further articulate this facade and allow ample natural light for a more productive learning environment. A hinge space is created beneath a shade canopy connecting the space between this addition and existing classrooms. Through standard, cost effective, modular building components (Concrete Masonry Units & Hollow Core Concrete Planks) the repetitive classrooms achieve an efficient inspired, and simple form.

Accent colors of red and green where chosen to accentuate an updated hue of school spirit. Accent colors where strategically placed in low traffic/low contact areas to avoid being repainted with a standard color. Desert greens were placed in proximity to windows to reference nature, while Reds (which can create feelings of excitement or intensity) were used to activate the north elevation from the street and can only be viewed indirectly by students.

My wife and I have developed these projects through a partnership with local Kinshasan church leaders. They outlined the need for an addition to an existing school as well as plans for prototype schools and clinics to be built in remote villages of the interior DRC. We began with a charette at the University of Kansas that included architecture professors, interior designers, structural engineers and architects. It is our hopes that these early projects will form a foundation from which a long term nonprofit Congo Collective can grow.

This project consisted of a 50 x 60 foot metal building with a large garage (1900 sf) and a 3 bedroom apartment (1800 sf). The apartment is intended to replace a 2 bedroom trailer used by the family for summer lake vacations. The schematic set was used to obtain estimates from a local contractor. The client is currently debating the design of a separate house and a smaller metal building.

This contract work with a local architect consisted of an ADA accesible entry addition to a 1918 church structure in rural Lone Star, KS. The architect had worked with the congrega-tion to establish an early schematic plan and massing sketches. I met with the architect to do field measurements and discuss the church’s intentions. In collaboration with the architect, a schematic design set was created. The congregation used this set to obtain estimates from a contractor. We are currently awaiting word from the congregation to proceed into the design development and construction document phases.

This project consisted of schematic drawings and visualizations for a finished basement in Olathe, KS. These drawings served as a starting place for a conversation between a married couple and the in-laws who would be living in the house above. After this conversational design session, the drawings were refined and used by the clients to consult with a contractor for estimates, design changes, and construction.

Concept: For this project we are working to design a school for students in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Our goals for this project are to create a good learning environment that is made from lo-cal and a ordable resources, able to be man-made, able to let in natural light due to lack of electric-ity, and able to include an outdoor classroom. This space is intended to involve the local community by including them in the building process, and provide children with a place to learn.

The Congo Classroom Building is the first actual building project for 1st year architecture students. It focuses on abstract principles of repeptition, part/whole relationships and communication through architectural drawing conventions. Concurrently, it addresses issues of context, local building systems and materials, social equity, community engagement, and human scale. It also serves as the culmination of a semester focused on the integral relationship between design decisions and natural forces of light, wind, and air.

Phase 2: After precedent research and multiple tours of local architecture offices each student began design schemes for the studio tables and storage. These designs phases where always followed by group discussion to find common principles and approaches. From this process the studio decided on three schemes to explore in full-scale mock-ups.
