NEEDED

A building specifically designed for training in the use and placement of portable

ladders including a designated roof access point for placement of roof

ladders and firefighter roof access procedures.

Buildings not designed for this training may be used with prior approval of the

Fire Academy Deputy Chief of Training.

EVOLUTION DESCRIPTION

13SE-1 Each student shall complete the Single FF Shoulder Carry traversing multiple terrains.

13SE-2 Each student shall complete Two Firefighter carries traversing multiple terrains.

13SE-3 Each student shall complete Three and Four Firefighter carries traversing multiple

terrains.

13SE-4 After the completion of 13SE-3 each group will clean and inspect the last ladder that

they used.

NOTE Students shall rotate through each position during the above carries and must be

proficient. Each student shall direct the carry team from the butt position.

Each student shall perform a single person rung raise using a 14’ or 16’ foot ladder and

an extension ladder (minimum 24’).

All raises shall be demonstrated and performed in accordance with the skill drill 13-12

as shown or page 383-384 of the J & B 3rd

edition ( Including tying the halyard)

TWO PERSON

Students shall raise an extension ladder using the two person method.

Each student shall perform in both functions until they are proficient.

3&4 PERSON

The groups shall complete the four and three person ladder raises insuring that each

student has sufficient practice in each position to become competent.

GENERAL

Students shall not be used as victims unless they are secured to an adequate belay

system to prevent an accidental fall during the evolution.

Any time students are required to enter or exit an opening such as a window from or

to a ladder, an Instructor shall be positioned on the interior of the entry site and a

second Instructor shall be positioned near the base of the ladder.

EVOLUTION DESCRIPTION

13SE-8 Each student shall ascend a ladder (min 20’) while carrying a tool. The student is required

to perform this skill with a variety of tools utilizing the technique pictured on page 392 of

the Jones and Bartlett 3rd

edition. There are a number of acceptable methods for

accomplishing this task. However, the method in the Jones and Bartlett 3rd

edition is the

standard that shall be used for this course.

Any alternative method, approved by the Deputy Chief of Training, may be included

provided there is ample time after completion of the required method.

13SE-9 Each student shall ascend a ladder (min 8’) and secure a leg lock utilizing the technique

demonstrated on page 394 of the Jones and Bartlett 3rd

edition.

Students that cannot physically perform this skill may be shown an alternative method

approved by the Deputy Chief of Training

13SE-10 Each team shall deploy an extension ladder (min 28’) to a peaked roof, deploy a roof

ladder and transition from the extension ladder to the roof ladder.

The student must sound the roof and proceed to the roof peak then descend back to the

starting position.

13SE-11 Each student shall rotate through the following positions during the Conscious Victim

Rescue:

Position 1: student shall foot the ladder

Position 2: student shall climb the ladder to receive the victim,

Position 3: student shall exit through the window to be assisted by Position 2.

An Instructor shall be at the window to guide the student and insure operational safety.

13SE-12 Each student shall rotate through the following positions during the unconscious victim.

Position 1: student shall foot the ladder

Position 2: student shall climb the ladder to receive the victim

Positions 3 and 4: two students shall proceed to the window (min second floor) to place

the victim onto the ladder.

A rescue dummy shall be used as the victim .Note: If a student is used as the victim, the

person shall be secured to an appropriate belay system prior to placement on the ladder.

13SE-13 Each student shall rotate through the following positions during the Small Child and Large

Adult Rescues:

Position 1: student shall foot the ladder

Position 2: student shall climb the ladder to a height of 8-10’.

Position 3: student will ascend the ladder and carry the victim to the ground applying the

method as described on page430-434 of the curriculum.
