About NHBA

The New Hampshire Beekeepers Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and study of bees, beekeeping, and the economic importance of apiculture in the state of New Hampshire. With the increasing threat to our honeybees and native bees alike, the efforts of the NHBA include: Funding and cooperating with researchers relating to apiculture and the maintenance of healthy bees in NH; The establishment of standards relating to beekeeping and apiculture pertinent to our state; Coordinating and promoting apicultural activities among local bee clubs, the NHBA, and individuals who are involved with bees in NH; Developing and supporting programs and activities to update the knowledge and skills of members, other beekeepers, and the general public; Promoting the production of quality bee products by NH beekeepers.

NHBA Updated Bylaws:

The Executive Council recently updated the NHBA Bylaws. The team of Barbara Lawler, Janice Mercieri, and President Starsha Kolodziej worked hard to make these updates. The updated bylaws can be viewed at the link below on the NHBA website. We will be discussing and then voting for their approval at the March 21st meeting. Please take a look at them, and make note of any questions or comments you may have.

February 2020 NHBA Research Update

NHBA has approved the following 2020 donations to support research that is benefiting NH Beekeepers:

•Project Apis-M (https://www.projectapism.org/) - $750

•Randy Oliver (http://scientificbeekeeping.com/) - $750

•BeeInformed Partnership (https://beeinformed.org/) - $500

Thank you to everyone who participated in 2019 citizen science projects. They produced some very interesting results!

• Our 2018-19 winter hive loss was 55% (down from 58% the previous year).

•The Deadout CSI observations indicated that many hives likely died from varroa mites as well as starvation. Hopefully, your colonies all make it through this winter, but if one does die, please consider using the CSI checklist (https://www.nh-honeybee-health.com/deadout-autopsy) to help give insight into the loss.

• The 2019 Health-Hives Mite Test project, which is still underway, produced some very interesting results showing how unpredictable mite populations are in any given hive. The mid-project report can be found at https://www.nh-honeybee-health.com/mite-testing

We expect this to be another busy year for our NH research projects. We will once again be conducting our Winter Hive Survey as well as collecting data on Deadout Observations & mite counting. Just this month the NH is Blooming! Project was approved. This is another Citizen Scientist project where we are asking everyone to enter information about plants they see blooming and or pollens they see coming into their hives. The goal of the project to is learn when pollinator friendly plants are blooming and when as well as what pollens represent which plants are being brought in. Pollen and nectar diversity are critical for bee health. The website https://www.nh-is-blooming.com/ will be up hopefully by the end of the March.

Also keep a look out for the 2019-2020 Winter Hive Loss Survey later this spring.

Orono Maine August 3rd - 7th, 2020 | Save the date!!

This year’s Eastern Apicultural Society annual conference is closer than it has been in years for our beekeepers in New Hampshire. A full week of classes, workshops, apiary experiences, trips, banquets, an auction, and opportunities to mingle with beekeepers from all over the region, country and the world. Vendors, food, a lobster bake! Music, art, a honey show! And of course, a once a year opportunity to sit for the two -day EAS Master Beekeeper Certification Exams.

Come for a day trip, make a week of it, attend the short course at the beginning of the week for two days or arrive for the three-day main conference. If you want to vacation on either side of the conference week and need assistance in planning, University of Maine, Orono, has a team willing to make that happen for you. “The dorms are an affordable option for lodging and there are also suites available for 3-4 people. The suites have a small kitchen with stove, microwave, and refrigerator. If folks are looking for ways to lower expenses, they can make their own meals if they stay in the suites. The Milford Motel in Milford, ME, just north of the campus, has 1 and 2 bedroom suites with kitchenettes as well and reasonable rates,” comments EAS President, Peggy McLaughlin.

The 2020 Conference planning team has been working as relentlessly as a colony of bees to bring you the very best in all that EAS represents, with a distinct Maine flair. For complete information on booking a hotel, with direct links to those with blocks of rooms available for attendees, please go to our web site, www.easternapiculture.org. Checking the web site weekly is your best resource for up to the minute news regarding the conference. Very soon, registration information will be available, watch for the EAS Winter Journal on the web site.

Best Regards, Dorinda Priebe, NH Director, EAS
