    April 2013

Kia Orana and welcome to my March e-newsletter.

Last month was a busy time in Parliament with the 'Social Security Amendment and the MarriageRedefinition bills going through their second reading and select committee stages.

I was also in and about Mngere visiting Work and Income, Housing NZ, Foundation of Trust ECEs,boarding houses, STRIVE and the Mngere Police station. It was a privilege meeting such

committed people doing extraordinary work in the community

Happy reading and I look forward to your comments and feedback.

    Kia Manuia.

    Highlights of Week 1-2: (3-9)

Mar4: While I was at the Mngere WINZ meeting with Managers Pip Lolotau and Alfred Wendt, abell rang signifying that someone's life had changed - a client had just secured a job. This was metwith loud applause and excitement from the staff. Public services under this government aredelivering and when one person succeeds we all succeed and that's definitely worth celebrating!

Mar8:My visit to some Mngere Boarding Houses with Social Worker Vaima'a Memea of MonteCecilia was an eye-opening experience. It gave me an insight into the conditions of these houses

and showed me what needs to be done to ensure healthier and safer housing for our familieslocally and across the country.

Mar9: I joined Hon Hekia Parata and colleagues alongside an estimated crowd of 80,000 at thePasifika Festival at Western Springs. The festival was packed with pacific culture, entertainment, art on exhibition heaps of delicious food.

In the afternoon I opened the "Relay for Life"event at Franklin which was part of a globalmovement to "celebrate, remember, and fight back" against cancer. I was inspired by the courageof cancer survivors and reminded of the value of life, and the importance of having family andcommunity support. Congratulations John Loaf and the team at Cancer Society. With Police Officers at the Mngere Police station

Mar12: I took a call in Parliament to speak on the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs and theprojects and investment this government has made in Pacific communities. I spoke specifically onearly childhood education, youth training and employment and social and health services. I also

made comment to our Pacific communities who are sick and tired of being labelled impoverishedand underprivileged. If you would like to read my speech please follow this link.www.alfred.ngaro.co.nz.

Mar14: My video blog introduces some of the key people who work in parliament aside from thepoliticians, such as Alan one of the security guards and Tim who runs the Post Shop. I do a videoblog every week which gives you a view inside of Parliament and of the different people whosupport our work. You can find these video blogs on my website. If you wish to see these videoblogs please follow this link.http://www.alfredngaro.co.nz/index.php?/pages/video.html

Mar15: I attended the 38th ASB Polyfest Festival in Manukau and enjoyed some of theperformances of the 58 Auckland schools who participated across the different cultural stages. Thefestival drew about 90,000 spectators.. It is great to see our youth performing with such pride and

passion in cultural song, dance and speeches and is also a great way to start the academic year.

    Highlights of Week 4:

Mar22: I attended the launch of a wonderful new resource In the neighbourhood. It is aneighbourhood development manual prepared by the McLaren Park and Henderson SouthCommunity Initiative (MPHS). The resource is aimed at encouraging neighbours to activelyparticipate and contribute ideas and thoughts into making their neighbourhood a great place tolive. MPHS, a community owned organisation has a 10 year track record of delivering initiativesand programmes for the residents of the McLaren Park Henderson South community.

They have implemented programmes like HIPPY Early childhood education, Family Advocacyservices, Community Fruit Orchards, Community Edible gardens to name a few. The resource isan awesome achievement because it has been driven bythe community for the community.

Based on my experience, success is more likely to be achieved and sustained when communities

have ownership of their development and progress.

    Congratulations MPHS.

Peace. He is a familiar face and leader in the South Auckland community. STRIVE provide a rangeof wraparound services including budgeting, community garden, adult and community education,Training, counselling, mentoring for clients.

Bill and his team operate out of the Ng Tapuwae community centre however their main office ison Massey Rd Mngere. It was great to see providers like STRIVE really making a difference inempowering and developing our communities.

Key issues in Parliament at the moment:

Superannuation up 25 per cent under National

On 1 April, the rate of Superannuation will increase for the fifth time since National came into

    office.

In just five years - from 1 April 2008 to 1 April 2013 - the married rate of super has increased by

$220 a fortnight - a 25 per cent increase despite difficult financial times. And the single living

alone payment has increased by $143 a fortnight over the same period, also a 25 per cent

    increase.

Older New Zealanders are better off under National. Our priority to build a more competitive and

productive economy will help increase after-tax wages, which means rates of Superannuation can

    also go up faster.

    Customs recovers millions following audits

This week, Customs' audits showed an additional $48 million being collected for the Crown in justover 18 months. This supports National's priority to responsibly manage the Government'sfinances.

Customs' trade assurance arm works to verify import and export entry data (including duty and

GST paid on imported goods, and excise and excise equivalent duty payable on tobacco products, fuel, and alcohol products) is accurate and ensures the correct revenue is collected.

Last financial year audits resulted in $31 million in additional revenue being collected, and tradeassurance has accounted for an additional $17 million - well above the targeted figure of $15million.
