President’s Message

Shakespeare once wrote "One touch with nature makes the

whole world kin". This pearl of wisdom seems appropriate for my mes-

sage this month. The show of a fundamental human emotion often has

the effect of bringing people closer together. The Long Beach Civic Asso-

ciation exhibited in our Library gallery is a show dedicated to Hispanic

heritage month. On view in our gallery are many beautiful examples of

Latino culture. The images of family gatherings, home, nature, and

struggle are truly universal. Two of our members, Naomi Diracles and

Rosa Marie Goeller displayed their work in the show and Nelly Romero,

rejoined the league. My hope is that we see more of these artists and can

collaborate on other projects in the Long Beach community. We had a

wonderful presentation by Bette Neuman from the Nassau County Museum of Art Com-

munity Outreach Program. Ms. Neuman spoke about the central place food and dining

have in our society. It is another example on what unites us. Who doesn't like to eat?

Feast For the Eyes is a popular show and Ms. Neuman was able to bring information

about the artists, images, and meaning to us in Long Beach.

By the time you read this newsletter, we will be going on a field trip to the Parrish and

Guild Hall. We will share photos in the next issue. We are looking forward to Kyle Blu-

menthal's presentation about the business of art. It should be an informative evening.

Trick or Treat!

Art Opportunities

Tri-County Artists of Long Island: Hello Long Islanders! These days, just about everyone knows a person who is a "Type 1" Diabetic. The TriCounty Artists of Long Island (TCA) is hosting an ARTfundraiser for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), on exhibit October 11 thru December 11, 2016. Lisa L. Cangemi, the President of TCA, has been a Type 1 Diabetic for 50+ years. Cangemi continues her fundraising for the JDRF Long Island Chapter (see them on Facebook). Cangemi has lived most of her life with this disease, and knows how it is, and has seen the changes made with help and education from the JDRF. This disease is NOT getting 'better' , it's progressing, and people must take awareness of it, and learn more. JDRF is a GREAT organization. This ART fundraiser was developed and organized by Lisa Cangemi. The art can be purchased at the receptions. Visit the college to see the exhibit. Come to the receptions scheduled at Briarcliffe College, 1055 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714. The reception dates are OCTOBER 26 and NOVEMBER 10, 2016 at 6-9pm. Cash, Checks and CC is acceptable for payment of art. Art purchases are tax-deductible. You will get a receipt for purchases. Cangemi is planning other future JDRF ARTfundraisers for 2017. Visit www.tricountyartistsoflongisland.org ,

please check scheduling for other exhibitions

explores the meaning of abstraction and features many well known contemporary artists. The Parrish Art Museum 279 Montauk Highway Water Mill, NY 11976 T 631-283-2118W

We will also be visiting Guild Hall

Guild Hall is an arts, entertainment, and education center for the com-munity. Its primary focus is to inform, inspire, and enrich our diverse au-diences by presenting programs of the highest quality in the visual and performing arts, to collaborate with artists of eastern Long Island, to fos-ter the artistic spirit and to provide a meeting place for all. Charles Ly: Humans and Hides

New work by Charles Ly is on view in the Guild Hall Education Corridor. Selection of paintings and works on paper inspired by design and pat-

terns, including a series of small meticulous, intricately-illustrated narratives and quietly evocative paintings. Large-scale works featuring the fantastical as well as surreal, imaginative compositions focused on natural forms. Ly grew up in East Hampton and studied graphic de-sign and illustration at Laguna College of Art & Design.
