Next generation WTG foundation and WTG installation
WindDays – Rotterdam, 14 June 2018

Subsea 7 Business Units
Life of Field: For more than 35
years we have provided clients
with inspection, maintenance and
repair (IMR) services, integrity
management and remote
intervention
SURF and conventional: We are a global market
leader in the Subsea Umbilicals, Risers and Flowlines
(SURF) sector. Most SURF projects are contracted on
a fixed-price basis and involve Engineering,
Procurement, Installation and Commissioning (EPIC)
services.
Renewables and Heavy Lifting: We are
experienced in the installation of offshore
wind farm foundations and substations,
heavy lifting for oil and gas structures and
decommissioning.

MP installation: Adopt – Adapt - Improve
18 June 2018 11
Greater Gabbard 2009
- Simple outrigger with fenders
- Manually controlled cylinders
to improve verticality of MP
Dudgeon 2016
- Motion compensated
cylinders
Borkum II 2018
- Outrigger 7m elevated to
improve stability for larger MP
- Noise mitigation screen
integrated in outrigger
Next step: MP installation on DP
Critical stages during MP installation on Dynamic Positioning:
1. At low penetration level, the pile may lean on the vessel, so the DP system must be capable of
supporting the pile
2. At intermediate penetration, the DP system must be capable of
supplying force to correct pile verticality within specified tolerance.
3. At stable/full penetration, the pile acts as a mooring pile.
Does a moored connection destabilize the DP control system?

Next step: MP installation on DP
- Outrigger control model (MATLAB-Simulink) has been completed by Bosch Rexroth
- DP simulation model has been developed with RH Marine
- Coupled system of outrigger control model and DP simulation model
Conclusion:
- A coupled outrigger-DP system is required to ensure safe MP installation on DP
- The simulation results have been verified with the data we have measured during Dudgeon MP
installation. This has shown very similar results justifying the accuracy of the model.
