• The Ministry of Health has taken a number of measures in recent years to improve health services in the Kingdom.

• It will be mandatory for all hospitals in Bahrain to co-operate with the national ambulance system.

TDT | ManamaMohammed Zafran

The Kingdom’s public health sector has re-ceived one of the world’s

prestigious honours. This came as the Ministry of

Health was granted a Diamond Level Accreditation Certificate by the Accreditation Canada International Commission.

The ministry received a de-tailed letter from the commis-sion, commending the best health standards maintained by the health authorities in the Kingdom.

The commission stated that the Kingdom’s primary health care sector deserves a special praise. The Diamond Level Ac-creditation is the highest of its kind.

The accreditation is in line with the Qmentum Accredita-tion Programme.

According to the commission,

the programme is designed to focus on quality and safety throughout all aspects of an organisation’s services - from governance and leadership to direct care and infrastructure - to benefit patients, clients, residents, staff and volunteers.

A detailed study was conduct-ed by the Canadian body before granting the accreditation. The report mentioned that Bahrain has met international standards on 99.1 per cent of the factors.

The commission had assessed the ministry on the quality of care, service delivery and using best practices.

“The achievement represents international recognition for the Kingdom’s public health care. This confirmed that we are in line with the national strategic goals,” the Ministry of Health stated.

The Ministry of Health as well the Supreme Council for Health has taken a number of measures in recent years to improve health services in the Kingdom.

Recently, it was announced

that it will be mandatory for all hospitals in Bahrain to co-oper-ate with the national ambulance system and receive all emergen-cy cases.

The hospitals are also re-

quired to provide information about the number of emergency beds they have and the desig-nated staff members assigned with emergency responsibil-ities.

“The hospitals may not re-fuse any emergency cases. The patients must be provided with treatment as soon as possible.

“Information regarding the number of emergency beds

must be provided and it’s avail-ability must be updated elec-tronically,” an SCH official said.

The National Ambulance Service was launched on June 15, this year. The service was activated at 13 centres and will cover all governorates by the end of this year.

The initiative aims to improve the quality of ambulance ser-vice provided for citizens and residents.

The project, which is man-aged by the Interior Ministry, operates within the highest lev-el of discipline in performance and competency to ensure fast response to medical emergen-cies by benefiting from the best international experiences in this field.

The project includes linking the operation rooms with the latest communication and con-trol systems and Geographical Security System to ensure swift response.

The public can contact the main operations room to make requests to the national ambu-lance service.

The National Ambulance Service will cover all governorates by the end of this year.

UoB students create app to help treatment of diabeticsTDT | Manama

In their bid to ease the lives of diabetic patients and help them keep their blood sugar

levels under control apart from managing meals and monitoring health statuses, two Bahraini Uni-versity of Bahrain (UoB) students has launched an app that will help them maintain good health.

The “icheck” app was created by Bahraini students Kawthar Ali and Muna Mohammed. It gives diabetics readings, clear diagrams and graphs so that it is easy for them to give their therapists re-ports on their health, as well as allowing the doctors to remotely follow the status of their patients at any time.

The students said the app has an insulin calculator through which the patient determines the type of dish that will be taken, where the app “icheck” allows

the patient to determine the type of dish that will be consumed by choosing from the types of foods in the application such as local dishes, fast food and healthy foods.

“icheck” would then calculate

the number of grammes of car-bohydrates in each meal, and no-tifies the patient of the amount of insulin doses that must be taken before taking the dish.

Ms Ali and Ms Mohammed ex-plained that the app works as an

alternative for the insulin pump, which costs patients around BD3,000 to purchase, and around BD2,000 annually for mainte-nance.

The pump gives patients the required dose of insulin, after entering the numbers of carbo-hydrates in each meal they con-sume.

They commented that “icheck” does the same task, but requires the patients to take the dose on

their own and not automatically, which the pump does.

“We have created this app to facilitate the lives of diabetes pa-tients and assist them in taking the necessary doses of insulin in time. “icheck” could also poten-tially help the Health Ministry with knowing the areas where patients are concentrated more than other areas and accordingly provide the necessary medica-tions and awareness campaigns to cover their needs,” the stu-dents commented.

They added that they devel-oped the app, which recently won the best graduation project award at UoB among other prizes, after consulting Internal Medicine and Endocrinology Specialist at Sal-maniya Medical Complex (SMC) Dr Hussain Taha and Nutritionist at SMC Dana Abdulaziz, under the supervision of Amal Ghanem from UoB.

‘Govt must intervene to curb banks charging high interest rates’ TDT | Manama

A Bahraini MP yesterday demanded the govern-ment to intervene to

“curb” the high interest rates imposed by commercial banks in Bahrain on its clients, taking into consideration the “tough” economic circumstances that the country is currently expe-riencing.

This was stated by MP Adel Al Asoomi in response to a re-cent report which mentioned that the profits of some Bah-raini commercial banks in Bahrain Bourse have jumped to BD640 million in the first six months of the current year, increasing by BD241.2 million in comparison with the same period last year.

Mr Al Asoomi commented in

a statement posted online yes-terday saying: “Profit growth indicates that commercial banks are making a large per-centage of profit due to the high interest rates imposed on commercial and personal loans. This will affect the eco-nomic situation in the King-dom of Bahrain.”

He questioned: “Is it reason-able for commercial banks to make BD241 million profit in six months? The continuation of imposing high interest rates by banks will contribute to the worsening of the economic situation in Bahrain. Rather than playing a positive role, these banks will have a nega-tive impact because of the high interest rates, which exceed the capabilities of the Bahraini

economy.”Mr Al Asoomi, who’s the

longest continuously serv-ing MP, criticised some of the commercial banks in Bahrain, citing that banks around the world, during an “economic recession”, usually reduce their interest rates and become more flexible with traders and bor-rowers.

The MP called upon the gov-ernment of Bahrain to inter-fere and instruct the Central Bank of Bahrain to curb the high interest rates imposed on commercial and personal loans, adding that a “decisive intervention” is important to contribute to the revival of the economic process, rather than contributing to its re-cession.The MP said commercial banks earned more profits out of high interest rates.

The continuation of imposing high

interest rates by banks will contribute to the worsening

of the economic situation in

Bahrain. MR AL ASOOMI

Khamenei meeting proves Houthis are Iran’s proxies

The meeting in Tehran is the first time Khamenei has held talks with a senior Houthi representative

• Saudi Arabia and its allies say Iran’s support of proxy militias in the region is the main cause of instability.

• An Arab coalition, which includes Saudi Arabia, is supporting troops loyal to the internationally recognised government against the Houthis.

London

A m e e t i n g b e t we e n a Houthi official and Iran’s Supreme Leader proves

“in black and white” that the Yemeni militants are an Iranian proxy, a senior Emirati official said Wednesday.

State TV showed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei praising the mil-itants Tuesday, as he met the Houthi negotiator, Mohammed Abdul-Salam.

Iran has long been accused of supporting the group, which sparked the war in 2014 when they seized the capital Sanaa.

Houthi relations with Iran are “clearer following their leader-

ship’s meeting with Ayatollah Khamenei,” the UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs An-war Gargash said on Twitter.

The relationship was “stated in black and white in their state-ment of fealty,” he added. “The Houthis are a proxy and that is the correct terminology.”

Iran’s support for the Houthis and supply of weapons is re-garded as one of the key reasons the war in Yemen has lasted so long.

An Arab coalition, which in-cludes Saudi Arabia, is support-ing troops loyal to the interna-

tionally recognised government against the Houthis.

The meeting in Tehran is the first time Khamenei has held talks with a senior Houthi rep-

resentative, Reuters reported.“I declare my support for the

resistance of Yemen’s believ-ing men and women ... Yemen’s people... will establish a strong government,” Khamenei said.

Yemen’s government and the Arab coalition accuse the Houthis of collapsing previous UN-sponsored talks to find a po-litical settlement to the conflict.

Saudi Arabia and its allies say Iran’s support of proxy militias in the region, including Hezbol-lah in Lebanon and groups in Iraq, is the main cause of insta-bility in the region.

Opponents of Brexit ‘collaborating’ with EU

London

Boris Johnson has accused MPs “who think they can block Brexit” of a “terri-

ble collaboration” with the EU.The prime minister said the

EU had become less willing to compromise on a new deal with the UK because of the opposition to leaving in Par-liament.

He said this increased the likelihood of the UK being “forced to leave with a no-deal” in October.

But some MPs said his claim they were collaborating with the EU was a “wicked lie” and a “big deflection exercise”.

The EU has said the agree-ment struck by Theresa May is the only deal possible.

Speaking during a Face-book event hosted at Down-ing Street, Mr Johnson said he wanted to leave with a deal but “we need our European friends to compromise”.

“There’s a terrible kind of collaboration as it were, go-ing on between people who think they can block Brexit in Parliament and our European friends,” he added.

“The more they think there’s a chance that Brexit can be

blocked in Parliament, the more adamant they are in sticking to their position.”

A No 10 source accused Mr Hammond of undermining the UK’s negotiating stance, and said he “did everything he could” to block preparations for leaving whilst he was in office.

The former chancellor re-jected this suggestion in a tweet, saying he wanted to de-liver Brexit “and voted to do so three times”.

Labour MP Mary Creagh said Mr Johnson’s accusation that MPs were collaborating with the European Union was a “wicked lie”.

“MPs trying to stop his cat-astrophic no-deal Brexit are true patriots,” she tweeted.

Liberal Democrat MP Chuka Umunna said Mr Johnson’s claim was a “big deflection ex-ercise to divert attention from the damage his Brexit policy is already doing”.

‘European ministers to discuss Strait of Hormuz mission’

Berlin

German Chancellor Ange-la Merkel said yesterday she believed the idea of

a European naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz would be discussed again at informal meetings of European foreign and defence ministers in Fin-land later this month.

“I think the question of a European mission will be dis-cussed there again because this discussion has not yet taken

place everywhere and so I be-lieve that the Finnish presiden-cy will play a coordinating role on that,” Merkel told a news conference after meeting vis-iting Lithuanian President Gi-tanas Nauseda.

EU foreign ministers and de-fence ministers are due to hold informal meetings in Helsinki in late August. Finland took over the EU’s rotating presiden-cy on July 1.

Britain last week joined the United States in a maritime security mission in the Gulf

to protect merchant vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz after Iran seized a British-flagged vessel. Two weeks beforehand, Britain had called for a European-led naval mission.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has said that Ger-many will not join a US-led naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz and that it favours a European mission but he has also warned it was rather difficult to make progress on that.

MA Yusuffali of LuLu Group pledges Rs 50 million for flood-hit Kerala

Abu Dhabi

UAE-based Indian business-man MA Yusuffali, chair-man and managing direc-

tor of LuLu Group has pledged to donate of Rs 50 million (Dh2.5 million) for the flood-hit south Indian state of Kerala.

Yusuffali is donating the mon-ey towards the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund to help the flood victims of the state, the group said in a media statement on Wednesday.

This was conveyed by Yusuf-fali directly to Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan, during a tele-talk today, the statement added.

During the 2018 deluge in Ker-ala, the retail tycoon had donat-ed Rs.80million for Kerala flood relief through the same fund and separate funds created by three Malayalam media houses, a spokesperson said.

“He had donated another Dh5million for the same cause through Khalifa bin Zayed Hu-manitarian Foundation,” he said.

Apart from this, the spokes-person said, Lulu’s employees also donated Rs100million to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund.

Many other UAE-based Indian

businessmen had also made huge contributions to rebuild Kerala after the devastating floods last year.

Yusuffali, who also hails from Kerala, is the first UAE-based NRI businessman to make an an-

nouncement about the donation after floods and landslides caused massive destructions and claimed 95 lives in Kerala yet again during this monsoon.

Meanwhile, a Dubai expat who died after rescuing two chil-dren from flood waters in Ker-ala on Tuesday, was laid to rest in Malappuram on Wednesday afternoon. Hundreds of people attended the funeral of Razak Akkiparambil, 42, an employee of an Indian school in Dubai, which was held at the Tirur BP Anga-di Juma Masjid in Malappuram district in the south Indian state.

“Around 1,000 people attend-ed the funeral. We finished the rituals by 12.30pm here,” Razak’s brother-in-law Shareef told me-dia.

Proud to Celebratethe Glory of INDIAwith You

India Inde-p e n d e n c e Day is a re-

minder of all the sacrifices the country’s freedom fighters

made for its future. Looking back on the last 72 years

of Independence, India has made progress in every field, be it education or its military and

space programmes. Speaking about freedom, Mahatma Gandhi had said,

“Freedom is never dear at any price. It is the breath of life. What would a man not pay for living?”

On August 15, 1947, the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, raised the Indian national flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi.

Flag hoisting ceremonies take place and cultural programmes are held in governmental and non-gov-ernmental institutions all over the country on this day.

For India, August 15 is a day of her re-birth, a new beginning.

At midnight on August 15, 1947, the British rulers handed the country back to its Indian leaders, ending a remarkable struggle that lasted decades.

After the British victory in the Battle of Plassey of

1757, the rule of East India Company started in India. By 1858, the British Crown had assumed control over India.

The situation after World War I was marked with suppressive and exploitative laws by the British.

This led to calls for independence, and sparked the phase of non-violent and non-cooperation movements followed by the civil disobedience movement.

The enduring leader and a national symbol for all these movements was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - the Father of the Nation.

The next decades were marked with constant struggles between the Indians and the British for freedom.

Many movements and acts were carried out by the Indian National Congress, freedom fighters and the people of India.

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation today from the ramparts of Red Fort in Delhi after hoisting the Tricolour.

This will be the prime minister’s first Independence Day address to the nation after he returned to power with a thumping majority in the recently-concluded general elections to Lok Sabha.

The prime minister’s speech and the proceedings from the Red Fort will be broadcast live on television as well as streamed live on the Internet.

LIC International greets every Indian and the entirediaspora on the occasion of our Independence Day.

CELEBRATING THE HERITAGE OF INDIA.

15 AUGUST

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Take nation to new heights I offer my greetings to all Indians on

the eve of our 73rd Independence Day. This is a happy and emotional day for

all children of Mother India, whether liv-ing at home or abroad. We remember with gratitude the countless freedom fighters and revolutionaries who struggled, strived and made heroic sacrifices to win us our freedom from colonial rule.

We complete 72 years as a free nation at a very special juncture. In a few weeks from now, on October 2nd, we will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the guiding light of our successful effort to liberate our na-tion and of our continuing effort to reform our society of all inequities.

Contemporary India is very different from the India in which Mahatma Gandhi lived and worked. Even so, Gandhiji re-mains extremely relevant. In his advocacy of sustainability, ecological sensitivity and living in harmony with nature, he anticipat-ed pressing challenges of our times. When we design and deliver welfare programmes for our disadvantaged fellow citizens and families, when we seek to harness the pow-er of the sun as renewable energy, we put Gandhian philosophy into action.

This year also marks the 550th birth an-niversary of one of the greatest, wisest and most influential Indians of all time – Guru Nanak Devji. He was the founder of Sikh-ism, but the reverence and respect he com-mands go far beyond just our Sikh brothers and sisters. They extend to millions of others in India and across the world. My best wishes to them on this pious occasion.

The illustrious generation that led us to freedom did not perceive independence only in terms of transfer of political power. They considered it a stepping stone in a

longer and larger process of nation building and national welding. Their objective was to improve the life of each individual, each family and of society as a whole.

Earlier this summer, the people of India participated in the 17th general election, the largest democratic exercise in human histo-ry. For this I must congratulate our voters. They turned up at polling stations in large numbers and with much enthusiasm. They gave expression to their electoral right as

well as their electoral responsibility. Every election marks a new beginning.

Every election is the renewal of India’s collective hope and optimism – a hope and optimism that can be compared, I would say, to what we experienced on August 15, 1947. Now it is for all of us, everybody in India, to work together and take our cher-ished nation to new heights.

We are a young country, a society increas-ingly defined and shaped by our youth. The energies of our young are being channelised in so many directions – in a quest for excel-lence from sport to science, from scholar-ship to soft skills. This is heart-warming. Nevertheless, the greatest gift we can give our young and our coming generations is to encourage and institutionalise a culture of curiosity – especially in the classroom. Let us listen to our children – for through them the future whispers to us.

I say this with the confidence and be-lief that India will never lose its capacity to listen to the feeblest voice; that it will never lose sight of its ancient ideals; that it will forget neither its sense of fairness nor its sense of adventure. We Indians are a people who dare to explore the moon and Mars. We are also a people who persevere to create a loving habitat for three of every four wild tigers on our planet, because it is characteristic of Indianness to empathise with nature and with all living beings.

May those ideals and may that urge to learn and to listen and to become better, may that curiosity and may that fraternal-ism, always be with us. May it always bless us, and always bless India.

With that, I once more wish you and your families all the very best on the eve of Independence Day.

Jai Hind!

Now it is for all of us, everybody in India, to work together and

take our cherished nation to new heights.

RAM NATH KOVIND

The most vibrant democracy

I extend my warm greet-ings and good wishes to the people of our coun-

Our democracy is more vibrant than ever before and our commitment to good governance and transpar-ency is stronger than ever before.

Bilateral ties at all-time highOn the occasion of the 73rd Inde-

pendence Day of India, I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to

members of the Indian community in the Kingdom.

Today, India is entering into a new era of economic transformation and we are moving forward with the goal of making India a US$ 5 trillion economy in the next five years.

With the success of various activities taken by the Government of India in the last few years including ‘Make in India’, ‘Digital India’, ‘Stand-up India’, ‘Start-up India’, improvement in ease of doing busi-ness and implementation of GST, India has become a gateway of several possibilities for the whole world.

With India becoming one of the fastest growing economy, the success story is not limited only to the economic sphere.  Strides have also been made in other hi-tech areas.

With the recent successful launch of Chandrayan-2, India has joined the elite group in the area of space technology.

With these developments in the back-ground, India-Bahrain relations are also experiencing renewed energy and momen-

tum under the dynamic leadership of the two countries.

Bilateral ties based on civilisational con-nect have entered a new phase and new vistas of co-operation have opened up be-tween the two countries.

Progress is being made in the new emerg-ing areas of co-operation viz. space technol-ogy, fin-tech and hi-tech.

With Bahrain undertaking various fiscal reforms and new initiatives being intro-duced in India, the bilateral trade has been consistently rising over the years crossing US$ 1.2 billion in the year 2018-19, register-ing an increase of 30 per cent over the pre-vious year and Indian investments into the Kingdom have reached US$ 173.38 million in March 2019.

Both the countries are identifying new areas of co-operation including enhanced public and private sector investments as per the strengths and requirements of each other’s country.

I would also like to avail of this opportu-nity to reaffirm the commitment to further strengthen the deep and historic bonds of friendship, understanding and co-operation between our two countries.

On the occasion of 73rd Independence Day of India, a flag-hoisting

ceremony will be held at 6.45 am today at the Indian Embas-sy in Seef Complex.

Indian Ambassador Alok Kumar Sinha will hoist the national flag.

The Indian Club announced that it would hold Independ-ence Day flag-hoisting cere-mony today at 6:30 am.

The Independence Day cel-ebrations and the Indian Club Summer Camp 2019 Grand Fi-nale will be held in the evening starting 7:30 pm, the club said. “Mr Sinha will be the chief

guest.” All the Summer Camp chil-

dren will be taking part in an evening of entertainment and stage displays, designed to showcase their emerging tal-ent. The Indian Club Summer Camp 2019 has been running since July1.

The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) flag hoisting ceremony will take place at 7.30 am today at its campus in Isa Town.

The Bahrain Keraleeya Sa-majm (BKS) will celebrate the Independence Day at its prem-ises in Segaya.

The flag-hoisting ceremony will be held at 8:00 am, which will be followed by cultural programmes.

Patriotic dance and drama performances have also been planned. Mr Sinha will be the chief guest on the occasion.

Bahrain, a huge investment opportunity for Indian investors • On plans Bahrain EDB has for India, Galpin said they recently undertook a highly successful roadshow in India where they met with government officials and businesses, all of whom were keen to strengthen ties between the two countries.

Pitching itself as a gateway to the Gulf region, Bah-rain has been attracting

huge Indian investments and is promising huge opportunities for Indian investors.

Simon Galpin, Managing Di-rector, Bahrain Economic De-velopment Board (EDB), while attending Davos, said India and Bahrain have a long history of economic and cultural ties and both sides are keen to further develop deeper relations in the future.

“This ethos of collaboration is at the heart of this, as we look to build what we are calling the In-dia-Bahrain business corridor - a mutually beneficial partnership that will see even greater trade, exchange of ideas and develop-

ment of innovation,” Galpin said.Indian political and business

leaders are as excited as we are about our shared opportunities and continue to be amazed at the advances being made in Bahrain, he said.

“One Indian investor I spoke to was astonished that he could set up his real estate joint ven-ture in Bahrain without once going to a government depart-ment. Everything he needed was online,” he said.

On plans Bahrain EDB has for India, Galpin said they recently undertook a highly successful roadshow in India where they met with government officials

and businesses, all of whom were keen to strengthen ties be-tween the two countries.

“Such success has encouraged

us to open another EDB office in India, in addition to our existing Mumbai and Delhi representa-tions.

“Indians are the largest group of expats in Bahrain and are heavily involved in our economy, particularly in finance and real estate. But, future opportunities are even greater, with our in-vestment environment improv-ing day-by-day as the economy strengthens and ongoing eco-nomic reforms take root.

“For example, Indian inves-tors could take advantage of the ‘Rules of Origin’ principle in international trade to access less open markets like the Unit-

ed States and can help devel-op emerging industries such as fintech, that are increasingly blossoming in the Kingdom,” he added.

Cutting edge technologies of the future, including robotics, AI, big data and analytics, are already big opportunities in In-dia, he said.

Corporates and public sector organisations working across spaces such as fintech, bio similars, genome research and pharma are increasingly look-ing at India as an incubator of such advanced technologies for deployment at scale in global markets.

Cutting edge technologies of the

future, including robotics, AI, big

data and analytics, are already big

opportunities in India. MR GALPIN

India’s historic Moon journey Chandrayaan-2 successfully enters lunar transfer trajectory

The final orbit raising manoeuvre of Chan-drayaan-2 spacecraft

was successfully carried out yesterday at 02:21 am IST.

During this manoeuver, the spacecraft’s liquid engine was fired for about 1,203 seconds. With this, Chandrayaan-2 en-tered the Lunar Transfer Tra-jectory.

Earlier, the spacecraft’s orbit was progressively increased five times during July 23 to Au-gust 06, 2019.

The health of the spacecraft is being continuously monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telem-etry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at Byalalu, near Bengaluru.

Since its launch on July 22, 2019 by GSLV MkIII-M1 vehi-cle, all systems onboard Chan-drayaan-2 spacecraft are per-forming normal.

Chandrayaan-2 will approach Moon on August 20, 2019 and the spacecraft’s liquid engine will be fired again to insert the spacecraft into a lunar orbit.

Following this, there will be further four orbit manoeuvers to make the spacecraft enter into its final orbit passing over

the lunar poles at a distance of about 100 km from the Moon’s surface.

The main scientific objective is to map the location and abun-dance of lunar water.

A successful landing would make India the fourth country to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, after the space agencies of the USSR, the USA and China.

The primary objectives of

Chandrayaan-2 are to demon-strate the ability to soft-land on the lunar surface and operate a robotic rover on the surface.

Scientific goals include stud-ies of lunar topography, miner-

alogy, elemental abundance, the lunar exosphere, and signatures of hydroxyl and water ice.

The orbiter will map the lu-nar surface and help to prepare 3D maps of it. The onboard ra-

dar will also map the surface while studying the water ice in the south polar region and thickness of the lunar regolith on the surface.

Referring to the launch, In-dia’s second mission to the Moon, Prime Minister Naren-dra Modi earlier said that the launch of the Chandrayaan-2 will be etched in the annals of India’s glorious history.

In a series of tweets, PM Nar-endra Modi said: “Special mo-ments that will be etched in the annals of our glorious history. The launch of Chandrayaan-2 illustrates the prowess of our scientists and the determina-tion of 130 crore Indians to scale new frontiers of science. Every Indian is immensely proud today,” PM Modi tweet-ed.

Referring to the indigenous systems used in Chandrayaan-2, he said the mission is “Indian at heart, Indian in spirit!”

PM Modi said: “Indian at heart, Indian in spirit! What would make every Indian over-joyed is the fact that #Chan-drayaan2 is a fully indigenous mission. It will have an Orbiter for remote sensing the Moon and also a Lander-Rover mod-ule for analysis of lunar sur-face.”

In a big push for the role of women at Isro, Chandrayaan-2 was India’s first ever space mission to be led by women scientists.

Valuing customers’ trust across nations LuLu International Exchange remains at the forefront

technological innovation in the remittance sector

India, which is cele-brating its 73rd Inde-pendence Day, is today

one of the world’s fastest growing economies.

Over the past seven dec-ades, India has shown its prowess in various fields and Indians around the world can take pride in the giant leaps the country has taken.

NRIs today are some of the biggest investors in In-dia, and remittances are an integral part of this growth story.

India continues to be the world’s top recipient of inward remittances, with nearly $79 billion coming into the country in 2018, according to the latest World Bank report.

Over the last three years, India has registered a signifi-cant flow of remittance from $62.7 billion in 2016 to $65.3 billion 2017.

In relation to the increased need for financial services, companies in the region have evolved likewise to cater to the South Asian expat community.

LuLu International Ex-change, an ISO 9001: 2015 certi-fied organisation, with easily ac-

cessible and widely networked branches across the region, acts as the go-to financial services outlet for expats.

Little-known facts about India • India was named after the River Indus, home to the first-

known civilisation, the Indus Valley Civilisation.• India is known as Bharat Ganarajya in Sanskrit. This the

reason that Indian is popularly called Bharat in Hindi.• India had no national anthem at the time of its independence

on August 15, 1947. The Bengali version of Jana Gana Mana was written by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1911, first sung during the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress and later adopted as India’s national anthem later in the 1950s.

• Although India became independent on July 18, 1947, Lord Mountbatten declared August 15 as the official date because it is the second anniversary of the surrendering of Japan to the Allied Forces during World War II.

• Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has also featured on the famous Vogue magazine because of his unique dressing sense. His jacket became a popular fashion trend in the West and came to be known as the ‘Nehru jacket’.

• India has the largest postal network in the world with over 1, 55,015 post offices. A single post office on an average serves a population of 7,175 people. The floating post office in Dal Lake, Srinagar, was inaugurated in August 2011.

• The 2011 Kumbh Mela was the largest gathering of people with over 75 million pilgrims. The gathering was so huge that the crowd was visible from space.

An emerging economic giant A well-established knowledge economy offers great future for India

The Republic of India is con-sidered one of the emerging superpowers of the world.

This potential is attributed to several indicators, the primary ones being its demographic trends and a rapidly expanding economy. In 2015 India became the world’s fastest growing economy with an 7.5 per cent estimated GDP rate (mid year terms).

Due to its high birth rate India has a young population compared to more developed nations. It has approximately 65 per cent of its population below the age of 35.

In addition, declining fertility is beginning to reduce the youth de-pendency rate which may produce a demographic dividend.

In the coming decades, while some of the powerful nations will witness a decrease in workforce numbers, India is expected to have an increase.

For example, while Europe is well past its demographic window, the United States entered its own in 1970 (lasting until 2015), China entered its own in 1990 (and will last until 2025), India entered its own in 2010 (and it will last until 2050).

In the words of Indian Scholar Rejaul Karim Laskar, “when grey-ing population will be seen inhib-iting economic growth of major countries, India will be brimming

with youthful energy”. Regionally, South Asia is sup-

posed to maintain the youngest demographic profile after Africa and the Middle East, with the win-dow extending up to the 2070s.

The economy of India is cur-rently the world’s third largest in terms of real GDP (PPP) after the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China.

According to the World Bank India overtook China to become the fastest-growing major econo-

my in the world as of 2015. Its record growth was in the

third quarter of 2003, when it grew higher than any other emerging economy at 10.4pc.

Estimates by the IMF show that in 2011, India became the third largest economy in the world, overtaking the Japanese economy and the Fifth largest economy by GDP (nominal).

India is trying to develop more highly skilled, English speaking people to fit in the future knowl-

edge economy. India is becoming one of the

world’s leading producers of com-puter software and with mush-rooming R and D centres it is ex-periencing a steady revolution in science and technology.

The Modi government was re-elected in a landslide victory in May.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first term was punctuated with many reforms including the introduction of GST, bankruptcy

and insolvency changes, digiti-sation of subsidies that resulted in large numbers of Indians now having bank accounts, and a steep rise in infrastructure spending on building roads, rail and electrifica-tion to power the nation.

India’s road and rail networks are critical to increasing its pop-ulation’s standard of living and economic prosperity as they con-nect farmers to markets, children to education and goods to con-sumers.

During Modi’s first term, India built almost 200,000 kilometres of rural roads. The number of rural villages connected by roads grew to 91 per cent, up from 56 per cent in 2014.

Modi’s new government has pledged 100 trillion rupees ($2.07 trillion) over the next five years for infrastructure investment.

This is huge considering the ex-penditure on roads and railways was about only 1.2 trillion rupees for the 12 months to March 2019.

Indian films have garnered millions in ticket sales from across the globe

Indian films featuring megastars with a global appeal, coupled with the backing of affluent production

houses, garnered millions of ticket sales around the globe last year.

The Indian film industry grew 27 per cent in 2018 on the back of box office growth in both domestic and interna-tional markets, according to a report by EY and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

In 2017, box office collections for Indian films overseas took $367 mil-lion — up almost three times from $125 million the year before, the report said.

Earnings this year are expected to do just as well and may rise to $411 million in 2020 — up by 12 per cent from 2017, according to the report.

Indian movies are finding success overseas from the backing of well-known celebrities and big production houses — factors that attract interna-tional viewers.

Those factors are helping some Indi-an films earn showings at more main-stream theatres in countries like the US.

Hindi-language movies, popular-

ly known as Bollywood films, earned more in international markets in 2017 compared to their counterparts in oth-er languages such as Tamil, Telugu or Punjabi.

While some Tamil and Telugu mov-ies did well in international markets in 2017, and Tamil superstars like Ra-jinikanth have a huge following in dif-ferent parts of the world, other films proved unpopular with audiences

As the country establishes itself as a space power, Indians have devel-oped an appetite for sci-fi themes in

its cinema. The patriotic outburst that followed

the Mars mission has fuelled the lat-est example of Indian space cinema: Mission Mangal (Sanskrit for Mars), a fictionalised account of the Orbiter Mission.

Starring and produced by Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, it is due for re-lease today.

“I would follow the news about In-dia’s space missions and feel proud of what we were achieving,” says Kumar.

“But through Mission Mangal, I

guess you could say I have an insider’s perspective.”

The Boat: a must-see fight for survivalA sea-set single-hander is terrifyingly taut

• The film has a brilliant conceit for a horror film

There is something about the ocean that can turn a mind to madness. Faced

with the unending expanse, mul-tiple protagonists (from films like Open Water, All Is Lost, The Mercy, Crowhurst and Adrift) have found themselves engaged in a fight not only against their environment, but with them-selves.

In this intriguing, impressive feature debut from Winston Az-zopardi, however, one man finds himself driven to the edge not only by the elements, but also the very vessel on which he sails.

Following The Boat’s pre-miere at Fantastic Fest, fur-ther festival interest should be strong; while the story may ap-peal to genre-skewing events, the high level of craft and talent on show here should see it se-cure more mainstream berths. With multiple-territory deals

already secured, it could be fur-ther buoyed by strong word of mouth.

On a beautiful summer’s day in Malta, an unnamed man (Joe Azzopardi) heads out to fish in his small row boat. All is idyl-lic until, suddenly, the weather turns and a thick fog descends.

In the gloom, he butts up against a gleaming white yacht named the Aeolus — derived from the ancient Greek for ‘nimble’ — motionless in the water. Board-ing, he finds the cabin utterly deserted; back on deck, he is shocked to find his own boat has vanished. He is adrift and alone,

tiny against the horizon. At this point, it seems as if The

Boat is treading familiar wa-ters. Yet, it’s not long before the clever, twisting, dialogue-free screenplay — co-written by Joe Azzopardi with his father Winston, who also directs — be-gins to reveal its hidden depths.

While the sailor clearly has some serious maritime skills, slowly but surely events begin to con-spire against him. The boat jerks at random, sending him flail-ing across the deck. The sails flap ominously, seemingly with a mind of their own. And, just as things can’t get any worse, a broken lock traps him in the tiny bathroom. From this point, and within this miniscule space, the tension rises at a rate of knots. As a storm rages and the boat fills with water, the sailor must utilise both his experience and his tenacity;. It is soon apparent, however, that he is locked in a battle of wits; perhaps, as the occasional sounds of footsteps and knocking suggest, with an unseen foe, or perhaps even with the boat itself. Subtle hints — bloody fingerprints, hidden food — suggest that he may not be the first to undergo such trauma; an angle that The Boat shares with 2009 nautical horror Triangle, which also takes place aboard a vessel called Aeolus.

As the only man on screen, and with minimal dialogue, Joe

Azzopardi commands attention from the off. With the screen-play mercifully avoiding any soliloquies or rants, the phys-ical and emotional toil of his predicament is instead etched on his face alongside the cuts and bruises. As bewilderment gives way to abject terror, and determination to desperation, the audience has no choice but to ride in his wake.

This is augmented by strong filmmaking craft. Cinematog-rapher Marek Traskowski con-trasts the stunning expanse of the seascape with the night-marishly intimate proportions of the yacht to claustrophobic effect, while composer Lach-lan Anderson’s emotive score works in harmony with both the relaxing undulations of the water and the sharp movements of the boat. Together with James Hayday’s expert sound design, which transforms the mundane — ropes slapping against the mast, the creak of a floorboard — into the uncanny, the boat takes on an uneasy personality all its own.

US Rapper A$AP rocky found guilty of assault in Sweden

Stockholm

A Swe d i s h c o u r t o n Wednesday found re-

nowned American rapper A$AP rocky guilty of assault over his role in a street brawl in Stockholm, and convicted him in a suspended sentence.

“In an overall assessment, the court finds that the as-sault has not been of such a serious nature that a prison sentence must be chosen. The defendants are there-fore sentenced to condi-tional sentences”, the court said in a statement referring to Rocky and two members of A$AP Rocky’s entourage being convicted of the same crime, reported Sputnik.

The 30-year-old Rap-per -- whose real name is Rakim Mayers -- was detained, a long with two others, for allegedly assaulting 19-year-old Mustafa Jafari in Stock-holm in June. He had temporarily been re-leased from detention

on August 3, until the an-nouncement of the verdict, which was slated for today.

The ‘Sundress’ singer had pleaded ‘not guilty’ in the assault case. Videos posted across social media suggested that the rapper had acted in self-defence, sparking an effective online support campaign around the world.

US President Donald Trump had championed the cause of the rapper and even raised the matter with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven.

The latest batch of celebrities to per-form at the 2019

M T V Vi d e o Mu s i c Awards has been an-nounced and with a trunk of talent on deck, it’s surely going to be an epic night!

Taking the stage by fire at the award ceremony, which will air live globally from the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey on August 26, will be a number of artists across genres, re-ported People.

MTV announced that art-ists including Bad Bunny, Camila Cabello, J Balvin, Lil Nas X, Lizzo, Rosalia, and Shawn Mendes are to per-form for the evening, and the show will be hosted by comedian Sebastian Man-iscalco.

MTV previously revealed that Taylor Swift, who has received 10 nominations across various categories including video of the year, the song of the year and best pop video, would also be per-forming at the ceremony.

It will be the Swift’s first major televised performance following the release of her highly anticipated album, ‘Lover’, which will come out on August 23. The 29-year-old singer last appeared on

t h e V M A stage back in 2015, performing her hit song ‘Bad Blood’, who took home the coveted video of the year trophy then, too.

Swift is tied with singer Ariana Grande for the most of the nominations this year, although the ‘7 Rings’ sing-er may be missing from the award ceremony.

She hinted on Twitter last month that her Sweetener world tour schedule may prevent her from attending the VMAs. Grande is sched-uled to be in Paris the day before and after the awards night.

Earlier this week, MTV

a l s o announced

that rapper Missy El-liott will be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award this year.

It is the award ceremo-ny’s highest honour and one that has gone to a group of iconic musical stars since it was creat-ed in 1984 like Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, U2, Pink, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Kanye West, The Rolling Stones, Janet Jackson, Ma-donna, David Bowie, and last year, Jen-nifer Lopez.

Miley Cyrus isn’t planning to file for divorce from Liam Hemsworth

Lo s Angeles

American singer Miley Cyrus isn’t in a hurry

to take divorce from Liam Hemsworth after the for-mer “ended things” be-tween them.

“ T h e y a r e h av i n g a break right now because they needed it. It was a bad situation with a lot of disagreements,” PEOPLE quoted a source close to Cyrus.

“They both agreed it’s better to spend time apart, but this doesn’t mean their relationship is completely over,” he added.

The couple’s life after marriage has been a top-sy-turvy ride. The ‘Wreck-ing Ball’ singer and the Australian actor have been in a similar situation in the past but found their way back again.

“They are great together when they are happy,” said the source. “There is abso-lutely hope that they will get back together again.”

The 29-year-old actor had recently opened up about his split with Cyrus and also wished her with good health and happiness in the future in an emo-tional post on his Insta-gram.

A few days ago Cyrus was seen with her long-time friend Kaitlynn Cart-er. However, a source told PEOPLE exclusively that Carter and Cyrus are “just having fun” together dur-ing their vacation.

Anne Hathaway recalls feeling pressured to lose weight at 16Los Angeles

American actor, Anne Hathaway, who will feature as the cover girl in the September issue of Allure

magazine, will be talking about weight, body-shaming and mi-sogynistic expectations from women in Hollywood, in the issue.

As the cover star, the 36-year-old Oscar winner used the platform to share how her weight was a big issue during her teen-age. After starting her

acting career with the short-lived television series, ‘Get Real,’ which ran from 1999 to 2000, Hathaway recalled that she was subtly body-shamed and asked to lose weight.

“At 16 years old, it was ‘Congratulations, you have the part. I’m not saying you

need to lose weight. I’m just saying don’t gain weight.’ Which of course means you need to lose weight,” the ‘Hustle’ actor told the magazine, reported Us Weekly.

Though the actor who is cur-rently expecting her second child with her husband, Adam

Shulman -- sees some change in the movie industry’s ide-

ology. “I am cautious in my praise of how Hollywood is shifting. There is so much more body inclusivity -- which is great! -- but the thin thing is definitely still the central-ized ‘normal’ expectation,” she said.

Hoping to get some female characters to grow in the industry, and that audience keeps supporting portrayals of complicat-ed women onscreen, she said, “It’s more nuanced, and it’s more interesting. It’s al-lowed for more interesting characters and stories. Now the big question is, Are audiences appreciating it? If it’s not sup-ported, it won’t continue. It will go back to the way it was, and people will say, OK, that didn’t work.’

Venus stuns holder Bertens as Serena withdraws• Venus Williams takes out defending champion Kiki Bertens in Cincinnati

• Serena Williams pulled out of the Cincinnati Masters prior to her scheduled first-round match

Reuters | Cincinnati

Former world number one Venus Williams, playing what she called “smart”

tennis, beat defending champi-on Kiki Bertens 6-3 3-6 7-6(4) in the second round of the Cincin-nati Masters on Tuesday before her sister Serena withdrew due to back problems.

Serena, who was forced to retire from the Rogers Cup fi-nal on Sunday because of back spasms, had been due to play Zarina Diyas in the first round as she prepares for her tilt at a 24th Grand Slam title at this month’s U.S. Open.

After Venus and Bertens split the first two sets, Williams surged ahead 3-0 in the third thanks to some excellent vol-leying but struggled to put her opponent away, committing nu-merous errors when serving for

the match at 5-3.Bertens held at 5-5 and then

forced a tie-break with an ace.Williams, however, took con-

trol of the tie-break, moving ahead 3-0 and 6-2 before sealing the win.

“I just tried not to go too big, because I can go so big and I have a lot of power and it’s not always easy to control it,” Wil-liams said.

German 13th seed Angelique Kerber exited the tournament when she lost to Estonia’s An-ett Kontaveit 7-6(7) 6-2. The 23-year-old Kontaveit came from 5-3 down and saved a set point at 6-5 in the opener against the former world num-ber one.

She broke Kerber twice to win the second set, winning the first nine points, and two holds to

love gave her a 4-0 lead.Swiss 12th seed Belinda

Bencic retired with a foot injury when trailing Victoria Azarenka 6-4 1-0. Former world number one Azarenka will face Donna Vekic in the second round after the Croatian beat Czech Kateri-na Siniakova 6-4 6-3.

American Madison Keys beat fellow big hitter Garbine Mugu-ruza of Spain 6-7(4) 7-6(5) 6-4.

Taylor rescues New Zealand after Dananjaya five-wicket haul

AFP | Galle, Sri Lanka

Ross Taylor hit an unbeaten half-century to keep New

Zealand afloat after Sri Lan-ka spinner Akila Dananjaya claimed five wickets on a rain-hit day one of the first Test yesterday.

New Zealand were 203 for five, having recovered from 71-3 at lunch, when rain stopped play for the day in the final session in Galle with Tay-lor batting on 86.

Dananjaya claimed his fourth five-wicket haul, bowl-ing with a remodelled action after being reported for a sus-pect action last year.

The mystery spinner took three early wickets including skipper Kane Williamson for nought before Taylor put on 100 runs for the fourth wicket with Henry Nicholls.

Dananjaya, who was over-looked for Tests in New Zea-land, Australia and South Africa, trapped Nicholls for 42 to break the century stand and then got BJ Watling for one to make New Zealand slip further.

“There’s no drastic change to my action. I needed to change a few things and with the help of spin bowling coach Piyal Wijetunga, I did the nec-essary changes,” Dananjaya told reporters.

“I used to send videos to him to get more feedback and really happy with my action now.”

Highest scoreTaylor handled pace and

spin with aplomb as he regis-tered his 31st Test 50 and had no problems resisting Danan-jaya, who mixed up his deliv-eries to outfox the batsmen.

Taylor registered the highest

score by a Kiwi batsman in a Test match at Galle, surpassing the 69 by Tim McIntosh. New Zealand have struggled at this venue having lost all three pre-vious Tests.

“They were tough at times. The ball certainly spun a lit-tle earlier than we thought, but we expected it to be turn-ing,” Nicholls said of the Galle wicket.

“If we can get some part-nerships first through Mitch and Ross but also through the lower order with the tail -- all those innings are going to be valuable when the wicket does get tougher to bat on.”

Earlier, openers Jeet Raval and Tom Latham put on 64 runs before Dananjaya struck on a pitch that is already offer-ing big turn.

Latham was the first to go after being caught behind for 30 as Dananjaya got the left-handed batsman to poke at a delivery that was turning away.

Wi l l i a m s o n f e l l t h re e balls later when he flicked one straight into the hands of his opposite number Di-muth Karunaratne at short mid-wicket.

In the last over before lunch, Raval failed to pick a googly and was caught at first slip by Dhananjaya de Silva for 33.

Both Sri Lanka and New Zealand are playing their first match of the World Test Championship, which has nine top teams competing for su-premacy in the five-day for-mat.

Play was stopped at 3.42 pm (1012 GMT) due to rain and half an hour later was called off with 22 overs lost in the day. Play will resume early today.

Stosur, Gauff headline US Open wildcardsAFP | New York

Former champion Samantha Stosur and teenage Wimble-

don sensation Coco Gauff high-light the list of US Open wild-cards announced on Tuesday.

Gauff, 15, reached the Wim-bledon main draw through qualifying then upset five-time champion Venus Williams in the first round before falling to eventual champion Simona Halep in the fourth round.

Gauff is joined by four other teenagers among eight wild-card invitees: a trio of 17-year-old Americans in Caty McNally, Whitney Osuigwe and Katie

Volynets and 16-year-old French player Diane Parry.

Stosur, meanwhile, brings a veteran presence. The 35-year-

old Aussie won the title in Flushing Meadows in 2011 and has reached the quarter-finals on two other occasions.

Other women’s wildcards went to former US collegiate champion Francesca Di Lorenzo and three-time Stanford Uni-versity All-American and New Jersey native Kristie Ahn.

Monaco make Ben Yedder costliest Ligue 1 transfer of the summerAFP | Monaco

Monaco said yesterday that they had bought veter-

an French striker Wissam Ben Yedder from Sevilla, with young Portuguese attacker Rony Lopes going the other way.

According to sources close to Monaco, the transfer is for 40 million euros ($44.7 million), the amount of the Ben Yedder’s re-

lease clause, with Lopes valued at 20 million euros.

That would make the 29-year old Ben Yedder the most expen-sive player bought by a Ligue 1 club so far in this summer’s transfer window, ahead of Paris Saint-Germain recruits Idrissa Gueye and Abdou Diallo.

The striker has four French caps and scored 70 goals for Se-

villa in 138 matches over three seasons. He moved to La Liga in 2016 after six seasons at Tou-louse.

“Wissam is a very talented player, a complete striker, who has proved his ability to score in Toulouse and Seville, but also in international competitions. He is also a player with an exemplary attitude,” said club vice-presi-

dent Oleg Petrov in a statement.Ben Yedder has reportedly

signed a five-year contract.“I come with the intention of

proving, as always, my qualities and with the desire to reach a new level,” said the player.

Lopes, who was under con-tract with Monaco until June 2022, has signed a five-year deal with Sevilla.

The 23-year-old joined Mo-naco in 2015 for around 15 mil-lion euros from Manchester City, before being loaned to Lille for a season and a half. Back i n Monaco in 2017, he scored 15 goals and won the first of his two Portuguese caps in November 2017.

Last season he scored four goals as Monaco strug-gled.

Monaco, French champion in 2017 and runners up in 2018, are re-building after a season of tur-moil.

Federer, Djokovic cruise on• Roger Federer moves into the third round of the ATP Cincinnati Masters with a straight-sets win over Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero

• World number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia opens his title defense with a win over American Sam Querrey

AFP | Cincinnati

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic overwhelmed opponents at the WTA-

ATP Cincinnati Masters on Tues-day as they returned to action for the first time since the Serb’s victory over the Swiss in the Wimbledon final.

Federer, seeded third, re-mained unruffled by a one-hour rain interruption at 2-2 in the second set, eventually defeating Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Lond-ero 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round at the event he has won seven times.

“I’m very happy, even if it was a bit tricky with the rain delay,” Federer said. “I’m happy to be back on court.

“This is the start of a long,

long hardcourt swing. It’s good to begin with a win.

“I didn’t know that much about my opponent -- he’s new to the tour -- but at the end you have to concentrate on your own game.”

Defending champion Djok-ovic double faulted three times as he dropped serve in the open-ing game against Sam Querrey but quickly put things right and

pulled away for a 7-5, 6-1 victory over the American.

“I ended the match well even if the start was nervy,” said Djok-ovic, who would break Querrey twice to take the first set then roll to victory.

“Sam was feeling comforta-ble on the court at the start and dictating. It was tough facing his big serve,” Djokovic said.

He added that he was “hop-

ing for a better performance in the next round,” when he’ll take on Spanish qualifier Pablo Car-reno Busta -- who withstood 32 aces from John Isner and a match point before beating the American 6-4, 6-7 (1/7), 7-6 (8/6).

Williams, meanwhile, was left just trying to get healthy after pulling out of her scheduled first-round match against qual-

ifier Zarina Diyas.“I came to Mason (Ohio)

on Sunday and have tried everything to be ready to play tonight, and was still hopeful after my practice this morning,” Williams said in a statement re-leased by tournament officials.

“But unfortunately my back is still not right.”

It’s another injury blow for the 37-year-old American, who was hampered by knee trouble earlier this season and remains in search of her first title since the 2017 Australian Open.

In early action, Stan Wawrin-ka won a first-round battle as he eliminated 2017 Cincinnati champion Grigor Dimitrov 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).

Under leaden skies after an overnight thunderstorm, Dim-itrov broke in the 12th game of the first set to take the lead. The 33-year-old Swiss fought back with the only break in the sec-ond set.

Wawrinka then raced into a 5-1 lead in the final set but wasted two match points in the eighth game and was bro-ken twice while serving for victory.

Wawrinka had to hold off his Bulgarian opponent in the final-set tiebreaker before squeezing through in more than two and a half hours with his 10th ace.

Archer gets England cap as rain washes out first day of second Ashes Test

AFP | London

Jofra Archer received his England Test cap but

was still to make his debut as rain saw the first day of second Ashes match against Australia abandoned with-out a ball bowled at a soak-ing wet Lord’s.

Chris Jordan, a Sussex team-mate, presented Arch-er with the cap in England’s pre-match huddle ahead of a revised toss at 3:00pm lo-cal time (1400 GMT) -- only for further rain to delay the start once again.

With rain still lashing an increasingly gloomy ‘home of cricket’, umpires Aleem Dar and Chris Gaffaney fi-nally abandoned play for the day after tea at 4:19 pm local time (1519 GMT)

Jordan may only have made eight Test appearanc-es but he has been some-thing of a ‘cricket brother’ for fellow Barbados-born county colleague Archer.

When the match should have been getting underway at 11:00 am (1000 GMT), the square and pitch remained fully covered.

Further rain then meant hopes of any play before lunch soon disappeared as well.
