Moving on, Bahrain’s Permanent Repre-sentative to the United Nations in New York Jamal Faris Al Ruwaie also asked Qatar to end its provocative and hostile behaviour, spon-sorship of terrorism, and interference in the internal affairs of neighbouring countries “all of which constitute a threat to international

peace and security.”Bahrain’s letter also appealed to the United

Nations to take necessary measures to end Qatar’s hostile practices and urge it to respect the UN Charter.

Bahrain stressed that despite Qatar’s false allegations and accusations, the Kingdom, based on its deep commitment to the UN Charter, will continue to strive for peaceful solutions.

SCW, Derasat to survey family cohesion

TDT | Manama

The Supreme Council for Women (SCW) and theBahrain Center for Strategic, International and

Energy Studies “Derasat” have agreed to conduct a survey on family cohesion and stability in Bahrain.

The survey will measure the extent of family cohe-sion and make recommendations to enhance and sup-port programmes and initiatives directed to achieve the objectives of the National Plan for the Advance-ment of Bahraini Women within the area of family stability.

“The study will boost the process of developing policies, legislation and services in support of fam-ily bonding, and enhancing awareness programmes about family stability,” SCW Secretary-General Hala Al Ansari said.

Derasat Board Chairman Dr Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa praised the pioneering endeavours and successive achievements made by the Supreme Council for Women, headed by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of HM the King in supporting the progress of Bahraini women.

“Derasat accords great significance to families as it considers them the primary nucleus of society and a major pillar of development and progress,” he added.

Dr Shaikh Abdullah pointed out that there is a close bond between family cohesion and community secu-rity that enhances national and moral values and the ability to confront negative and harmful influences.

Capital municipality to improve aesthetic appearance

TDT | Manama

The Capital municipality announced plans to imple-ment eight projects worth 120 thousand Bahrain

dinars this month to boost the aesthetic appearance of the Kingdom’s capital.

The Director-General of the Capital Municipal-ity, Muhammad Saad Al-Sahli, confirmed the new development. He said the move falls in line with the decision of the municipality’s and Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning to increase the green cover in the governorate. Al Sahli said the municipality will plant more than 300 shade-trees on King Faisal Street and Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Street.

Roundabouts are to be enhanced by planting palms and trees of more than 70 varieties.

The Capital municipality, Al Sahli said, will install artificial grass and stones, and new games for children at the Sitra bridge walkway, Zinj Park and Seef Park.

Plans are also progressing to install rubber floor at Abu Ghazal Park play area and renovating public facil-ities and service buildings in Salmaniya Park, Mahooz Park, Adliya Park and Al Wahda Park.

The municipality is also pursuing approval for three more projects. One of them is for establishing an arbo-retum in Salmaniya Park to cultivate trees and plants. Other projects are for installing solar-powered lighting at East Coast Corniche and main streets.

China to leapfrog US as world’s biggest economy by 2028: think tank

• Japan would remain the world’s third-biggest economy, in dollar terms

• The United Kingdom, currently the fifth-biggest economy by the CEBR’s measure, would slip to sixth place from 2024.

• British GDP in dollars was forecast to be 23pc higher than France’s by 2035

Reuters | London

China will overtake the United States to become the world’s

biggest economy in 2028, five years earlier than previously es-timated due to the contrasting recoveries of the two countries from the COVID-19 pandemic, a think tank said.

“For some time, an overar-

ching theme of global econom-ics has been the economic and soft power struggle between the United States and China,” the Centre for Economics and Busi-ness Research said in an annual report published on Saturday.

“The COVID-19 pandemic and

corresponding economic fallout have certainly tipped this rivalry in China’s favour.”

The CEBR said China’s “skilful management of the pandemic”, with its strict early lockdown, and hits to long-term growth in the West meant China’s relative

economic performance had im-proved.

China looked set for average economic growth of 5.7 per cent a year from 2021-25 before slow-ing to 4.5pc a year from 2026-30.

While the United States was likely to have a strong post-pan-

demic rebound in 2021, its growth would slow to 1.9pc a year between 2022 and 2024, and then to 1.6pc after that.

Japan would remain the world’s third-biggest economy, in dollar terms, until the early 2030s when it would be overtak-en by India, pushing Germany down from fourth to fifth.

The United Kingdom, cur-rently the fifth-biggest economy by the CEBR’s measure, would slip to sixth place from 2024.

However, despite a hit in 2021 from its exit from the European Union’s single market, British GDP in dollars was forecast to be 23pc higher than France’s by 2035, helped by Britain’s lead in the increasingly important digital economy.

It also said the pandemic’s impact on the global economy was likely to show up in higher inflation, not slower growth.

“We see an economic cycle with rising interest rates in the mid-2020s,” it said, posing a challenge for governments which have borrowed massive-ly to fund their response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Britain and EU publish text of narrow Brexit trade dealReuters | London

Britain yesterday published the text of its narrow trade

agreement with the European Union just five days before it exits one of the world’s biggest trading blocs in its most signif-icant global shift since the loss of empire.

The text includes a 1,246-page trade document, as well as agreements on nuclear en-ergy, exchanging classified in-formation, civil nuclear energy and a series of joint declara-tions.

The “Draft EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement” means that from 2300 GMT on Dec. 31, when Britain finally leaves the EU’s single market and customs union, there will be no tariffs or quotas on the movement of goods originat-ing in either place between the UK and the EU.

The treaty explicitly recog-nises that trade and invest-

ment require conditions for “a level playing field for open and fair competition.”

On financial services, which drive the British economy, the two sides simply commit “to establish a favourable cli-mate for the development of trade and investment between them”.

The text includes many de-tailed annexes including on rules of origin, fish, the wine trade, medicines, chemicals and security data cooperation.

European businesses hopeful of China-EU investment deal• The deal is facing opposition from some European members of parliament and the incoming US administration of President-elect Joe Biden

AFP News

European businesses in China are hopeful of an EU- China investment

deal by end of the year, the head of the European Chamber of Commerce in China said yes-terday, although Beijing has de-clined to commit to a deadline.

The China-EU Comprehen-sive Agreement on Investment has been in the works for seven years, and is expected to pave the way for European business-es to invest in financial services, telecommunications, electric vehicles and other sectors that are gradually being opened up for foreign investment in China.

But the deal is facing oppo-sition from some European members of parliament and the incoming US administration of

President-elect Joe Biden, who say it does not address concerns about the use of forced labour by Chinese manufacturers, espe-cially in the restive northwest-ern region of Xinjiang.

“The next few days will be interesting. My sense is that there is a serious push to get this past the finishing line,” Joerg Wuttke, head of the European Chamber of Commerce in Chi-na, said.

“It’s not a perfect deal, far from it, but it’s a big step for-ward.”

China’s commerce ministry has refrained from committing to a year-end deadline and ap-pears prepared for an extension

of discussions.“In order to preserve its secu-

rity and development interests, China will conduct the negotia-tions at its own pace and strive to reach a comprehensive, bal-anced and ambitious investment

agreement with the EU,” it said in a statement late Thursday.

“The China-EU investment agreement is aimed at providing more investment opportunities and sound institutional guar-antees for the two sides, but to reach it requires joint efforts and to meet each other halfway,” it added.

In an interview with Le Monde on Wednesday, France’s junior trade minister Franck Riester said Beijing needed to address the issue of forced la-bour if Paris was to agree to the deal.

Jake Sullivan, who has been tipped as National Security Ad-visor, tweeted on Tuesday that: “The Biden-Harris administra-tion would welcome early con-sultations with our European partners on our common con-cerns about China’s economic practices.”

The investment deal aims to create an equal playing field for European businesses in Chi-na that have long complained about preferential terms en-joyed by domestic firms.

The treaty will also strength-en intellectual property pro-tections for European compa-nies and ban forced technology transfers.

The China-EU investment deal has been in the works for seven years but has faced opposition over concerns about the use of forced labour, particularly in China’s Xinjiang region

Erdogan says Turkey will break economic ‘triangle of evil’Reuters | Ankara

Turkey will bring in struc-tural reforms to break the

“triangle of evil” of interest rates, inflation and exchange rates, President Tayyip Erdo-gan said yesterday, adding An-kara was determined to form a system based on production and employment.

Erdogan promised a slate of judicial and economic re-forms last month, leading to expectations of the possible release of politicians, includ-ing Kurdish ones, and human rights advocates from jail. But Erdogan’s recent comments on court rulings and criticism aimed at his government have fuelled scepticism about his pledge.

Speaking via videolink at a ceremony in Ankara, Erdogan said 2021 would be “the year of democratic and economic reforms” and that efforts to present the reforms to parlia-

ment would move “as soon as possible”.

“We hope to overcome trou-bles from economic attacks and the pandemic measures as soon as possible. By speed-ing up structural reforms, we are determined to form a sys-tem based on production and employment and breaking the interest rates, inflation and ex-change rates triangle of evil,” Erdogan said.

Millions of Americans lose jobless benefitsReuters | Palm Beach, Fla/Wash-ington

Millions of Americans saw their jobless benefits ex-

pire yesterday after US Presi-dent Donald Trump refused to sign into law a $2.3 trillion pan-demic aid and spending pack-age, protesting that it did not do enough to help everyday people.

Trump stunned Republicans and Democrats alike when he said this week he was unhap-py with the massive bill, which

provides $892 billion in badly needed coronavirus relief, in-cluding extending special un-employment benefits expiring

on Dec. 26, and $1.4 trillion for normal government spending.

Without Trump’s signature, about 14 million people could lose those extra benefits, ac-cording to Labor Department data. A partial government shutdown will begin on Tues-day unless Congress can agree a stop-gap government funding bill before then.

After months of wrangling, Republicans and Democrats agreed to the package last weekend, with the support of

the White House. Trump, who hands over power to Democrat-ic President-elect Joe Biden on Jan. 20, did not object to terms of the deal before Congress vot-ed it through on Monday night.

But since then he has com-plained that the bill gives too much money to special in-terests, cultural projects and foreign aid, while its one-time $600 stimulus checks to mil-lions of struggling Americans were too small. He has demand-ed that be raised to $2,000.

Archaeologists uncover ancient street food shop in PompeiiReuters | Rome

Archaeologists in Pompeii, the city buried in a volcanic

eruption in 79 AD, have made the extraordinary find of a frescoed hot food and drinks shop that served up the ancient equiv-alent of street food to Roman passersby.

Known as a termopolium, Latin for hot drinks counter, the shop was discovered in the archaeological park’s Regio V site, which is not yet open the public, and unveiled yesterday.

Traces of nearly 2,000-year-old food were found in some of the deep terra cotta jars con-taining hot food which the shop keeper lowered into a counter with circular holes.

The front of the counter was decorated with brightly colour-ed frescoes, some depicting ani-

mals that were part of the ingre-dients in the food sold, such as a chicken and two ducks hanging upside down.

“This is an extraordinary find. It’s the first time we are excavat-ing an entire termopolium,” said Massimo Ossana, director of the

Pompeii archaeological park.Archaeologists also found a

decorated bronze drinking bowl known as a patera, ceramic jars used for cooking stews and soups, wine flasks and amphora.

Pompeii, 23 km (14 miles) southeast of Naples, was home to about 13,000 people when it was buried under ash, pumice pebbles and dust as it endured the force of an eruption equiva-

lent to many atomic bombs.“Our preliminary analyses

shows that the figures drawn on the front of the counter, rep-resent, at least in part, the food and drink that were sold there,” said Valeria Amoretti, a site an-thropologist.

Amoretti said traces of pork, fish, snails and beef had been found in the containers, a dis-covery she called a “testimony to the great variety of animal prod-ucts used to prepare dishes”.

About two-thirds of the 66-hectare (165-acre) ancient town has been uncovered. The ruins were not discovered until the 16th century and organised excavations began about 1750.

A rare documentation of Gre-co-Roman life, Pompeii is one of Italy’s most popular attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Police search for clues at Nashville blast siteThe explosion on Christmas day in downtown Nashville damaged dozens of businesses

• Tennessee governor seeks emergency declaration

Reuters | Nashville

Authorities in Nashville yesterday probed an explosion that ripped through part of the US city on Christ-

mas morning after a chilling bomb warning while the governor requested an emergency declaration from the White House.

The fiery blast, heard from miles away, destroyed several vehicles, damaged more than 40 businesses and left a trail of glass shards around the area.

The motor home, parked on a downtown street of Tennessee’s largest city, exploded at dawn on Friday moments after police responding to reports of gunfire noticed the recreational vehicle and heard an auto-mated message emanating from it warning of a bomb.

The means of detonation and whether anyone was inside the RV when it blew up were not immediately known, but investi-gators were examining what they believed might be human remains found in the vi-cinity of the blast, police said.

Police offered no possible motive, and there was no claim of responsibility, though Nashville Metropolitan Police Department officials called the blast an “intentional act” and vowed to determine its origin.

Dozens of agents from the FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were surveying the ashy dis-aster area yesterday. Inside the area, which was blocked off to traffic, parked cars and trees were blackened and an exploded wa-ter pipe that had been spraying overnight had covered trees in a layer of ice.

A total of 41 businesses were damaged, Mayor John Cooper said.

“All the windows came in from the living room into the bedroom. The front door became unhinged,” Buck McCoy, who lives on the block where the blast occurred, told local TV station WKRN. “I had blood coming from my face and on my side and on my legs and a little bit on my feet.”

McCoy told CNN that he and some neigh-bors were returning to the area yesterday in search of pets they had been forced to

leave behind.Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said he

toured the disaster zone yesterday, saying in a Twitter message it was a “miracle” that no one was killed. In a letter to President Donald Trump, Lee requested a federal emergency declaration for his state to aid in relief efforts.

A recording, then a blastAdding to the cryptic nature of Friday’s

incident was the eerie preamble described by witnesses - a crackle of gunfire followed an apparently computer-generated female voice from the RV reciting a minute-by-min-ute countdown to an impending bomb blast.

Police scrambled to evacuate nearby homes and buildings and called for a bomb squad, which was still en route to the scene when the RV blew up just outside an AT&T Inc office building where it had been parked.

Police later posted a photo of the motor home, which they said had arrived in the area about four hours prior to the explo-sion.

Fire officials said three people were hos-pitalized with relatively minor injuries and were in stable condition. Authorities said police likely prevented more casual-ties by acting quickly to clear the area of bystanders.

The explosion occurred about two blocks from Lower Broadway, where some of Nashville’s famous live music venues are located. The Ryman Auditorium, former home of the Grand Ole Opry and just three blocks from the blast scene, was undam-aged. The Gaylord Opryland and current Grand Ole Opry complexes, which sit out-side the downtown area, were not impact-ed.

British Cold War double agent George Blake dies in Moscow

AFP | Moscow

George Blake, a famous “mole” in British intel-

ligence who spied for the Soviet KGB during the 1950s before fleeing across the Iron Curtain, has died aged 98, Russian news agencies reported yesterday.

“The legendary intelli-gence officer George Blake has passed away today,” the spokesman for Russia’s SVR foreign intelligence service Sergei Ivanov told the TASS state news agency.

“He sincerely loved our country and admired our people’s achievements dur-ing World War II,” Ivanov added.

R u s s i a n P r e s i d e n t Vladimir Putin, himself an ex-KGB agent, yesterday expressed his “deep con-dolences” to Blake’s family and friends.

In a message published on the Kremlin website, the Russian leader noted Blake’s “invaluable contri-bution to ensuring strate-gic parity and maintaining peace on the planet”.

A former member of the Dutch resistance during World War II then an agent of the British foreign intel-ligence service MI6, Blake offered his services to the Soviets in the 1950s after witnessing US bombings against the civilian popula-tion during the Korean War.

He provided the names of hundreds of MI6 agents to the KGB and revealed the existence of a secret tunnel in East Berlin that was used to spy on the Soviets.

Biden warns of ‘devastating consequences’ of Trump block on pandemic reliefAFP | Washington

US President-elect Joe Biden warned yesterday of “devas-

tating consequences” if President Donald Trump continues to delay signing a Covid-19 economic relief bill passed by Congress.

Trump threw a long-awaited pandemic aid package into doubt last week as millions of Amer-icans prepared to lose benefits

and face eviction -- demanding lawmakers more than triple the $600 direct payments to US tax payers.

“This abdication of responsibil-ity has devastating consequences. Today, about 10 million Ameri-cans will lose unemployment in-surance benefits,” Biden said in a statement. The stimulus measure is wrapped up with a $1.4 trillion funding bill, without which the

government will be forced to shut down at midnight Monday.

“In just a few days, government funding will expire, putting vital services and paychecks for mil-itary personnel at risk,” Biden added.

“In less than a week, a morato-rium on evictions expires, putting millions at risk of being forced from their homes over the hol-idays.”

Europe rolls out vaccines in bid to leave pandemic behindLeaders of the 27-country European Union are promoting it as the best chance of getting back to something like normal life next year

• The region of 450 million people has secured contracts with a range of suppliers for over two billion vaccine doses and has set a goal for all adults to be inoculated during 2021

Reuters | London

Europe launches a cross-bor-d e r va c c i n a t i o n p ro -gramme of unprecedented

scale today as part of efforts to end a COVID-19 pandemic that has crippled economies and claimed more than 1.7 million lives around the world.

The region of 450 million peo-ple has secured contracts with a range of suppliers for over two billion vaccine doses and has set a goal for all adults to be inoculated during 2021.

While Europe has some of the best-resourced healthcare sys-tems in the world, the sheer scale of the effort means that some

countries are calling on retired medics to help out while others have loosened rules for who is allowed to give the injections.

With surveys pointing to high levels of hesitancy towards the vaccine in countries from France to Poland, leaders of the 27-coun-try European Union are promot-ing it as the best chance of getting back to something like normal life next year.

“We are starting to turn the page on a difficult year,” Ursula von der Leyen, president of the Brussels-based European Com-

mission coordinating the pro-gramme, said in a tweet.

“Vaccination is the lasting way out of the pandemic.”

After European governments were criticised for failing to work together to counter the spread of the virus in early 2020, the goal this time is to ensure that there is equal access to the vaccines across the entire region.

But even then, Hungary yester-day jumped the gun on the official roll-out by starting to administer shots of the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech to frontline

workers at hospitals in the capital Budapest.

Countries including France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Portugal and Spain are planning to begin mass vaccinations, starting with health workers on Sunday. Out-side the EU, Britain, Switzerland and Serbia have already started in recent weeks.

The distribution of the Pfiz-er-BioNTech shot presents tough challenges. The vaccine uses new mRNA technology and must be stored at ultra-low temperatures of around -80 degrees Celsius (-112°F). France, which received its first shipment of the two-dose vaccine yesterday, will start administering it in the greater Paris area and in the Burgun-dy-Franche-Comte region.

China faced a barrage of crit-icism at home and abroad over its initial handling of the virus, which emerged in the central city of Wuhan last December.

China’s Politburo, the top de-cision-making body of the Com-munist Party, said late Friday that the party leadership “played a decisive role in leading ... China in

prevailing over the rare risks and challenges this year.”

“At the critical moment ... the Party Central Committee took a long-term view ...achieving an extremely extraordinary glo-ry in this extremely unusual year,” state news agency Xinhua reported.

China has largely curbed the spread of the virus, and was one of the only major economies to report growth this year.

News in brief u Four people were injured in a shooting in the German capital Berlin in the early hours

of yesterday, police said. A police spokeswoman said four people were taken to hospital in the altercation involving several people in the Kreuzberg district, adding there was no indication of a political motive. The Berlin fire service said earlier on Twitter that three people were seriously injured in the shooting.

u Three UN peacekeepers have been killed by unidentified combatants in the Central African Republic, the United Nations said, as the country prepares for a general election and fighting continues between rebels and government forces. The news came after a rebel coalition called off a ceasefire and said it would resume its march on the capital, as well as the arrival of troops from Russia and Rwanda to shore up the government of the resource-rich country.

u Russia approved its main COVID-19

vaccine, Sputnik V, for use by people over the age of 60, Russian news agencies cited the health ministry as saying. People over 60 have thus far been excluded from Russia’s national inoculation programme, as the shot was tested on this age group separately.

u Turkey’s Defence Minister Hulusi Akar made a surprise trip to Libya, two days after strongman Khalifa Haftar urged his fighters to drive out Turkish forces from the oil-rich country. The Turkish defence ministry said Akar would inspect Turkish forces in Libya during the visit, while Libyan officials said talks would focus on military cooperation between Tripoli and Ankara.

u A doctor in Boston with a shellfish allergy

developed a severe allergic reaction after receiving Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine, the New York Times reported, citing the doctor. Dr. Hossein Sadrzadeh, a geriatric oncology fellow at Boston Medical Center, said he had a severe reaction almost immediately after being vaccinated, feeling dizzy and with a racing heart, the NYT reported.

China hails its ‘extraordinary’ success curbing virus ahead of WHO probeAFP | Beijing

China’s ruling Communist Party leaders have congrat-

ulated themselves on their “ex-tremely extraordinary” success in handling the Covid-19 outbreak

domestically, ahead of a World Health Organization probe into the disease’s origins.

Turkish opposition TV station shuts after 26 daysAFP | Washington

A private Turkish TV s t a t i o n t h a t a i re d

pro-Kurdish opposition views has shut down less than a month after launch, underscoring press free-dom concerns in a country often chastised by rights groups.

Olay TV, owned by busi-nessman and former min-ister Cavit Caglar, began broadcasting on November 30 but was pulled off the air on Friday.

Its staff announced its closure live on air.

Caglar said he pulled out of the venture because the station’s editorial line veered too close to the pro-Kurdish opposition, while the editor claimed he had bowed to government pressure.

Ariana Grande donates Christmas gifts to children at hospitalANI | Washington

Singer and songwriter Ari-ana Grande and her fiance Dalton Gomez sent special

Christmas gifts for the patients at the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. Ariana, herself hand-ed over gifts to patients in hos-pitals across Manchester.

Just like Santa, this year Ariana Grande is spreading the holiday cheer. According to E! News, the ‘One Last Time’ singer sent Amazon gift vouchers and Secret

Santa gifts to patients at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Manchester Chil-dren’s Hospital.

Ever since the terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena during Ariana’s ‘Dangerous Woman’ tour back in 2017, the UK city has held a spe-

cial place in the singer’s heart.Closer home, Ariana and her

fiance gave a helping hand by sending special gifts from the wish-lists of patients at the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hos-pital. The hospital shared an

adorable set of photos on their Instagram, featuring some of the children who got their pre-sents along with other goodies and surprise pizzas. As per E! News, the couple also sent all this along with cards that read “happy holidays! love ariana grande + dalton gomez.”

Ariana also treated the par-ents with presents whose kids are in the neonatal intensive care unit at both the Los An-geles hospital and in Manches-ter. The mothers and fathers of those children received gifts like blankets, face creams, lotions, and more.

These generous donations come just three days after Ariana had announced on In-stagram that she is going to marry Dalton Gomez, a SoCal real estate agent, with whom she first sparked romance ru-mours back in February.

ANI | Los Angeles

English singer and song-writer Dua Lipa penned a contemplative note

for fans.Wishing her fans on the

occasion of Christmas, Lipa took to Instagram and posted a heartfelt note urging them to spread love for people suffer-ing from the pandemic.

The post that accumulated more than 200,000 likes with-in an hour of being posted fea-tures the pet dog of the ‘Phys-ical’ singer which she adopt-ed with her model boyfriend Anwar Hadid and named him Dexter.

The caption read, “The holidays aren’t always happy for everyone and especially during this difficult year it’s

so important to reach out to your friends, family and es-pecially those who might be celebrating it away from their loved ones this year or those who have suffered loss.”

“Send love. Reach out. It only takes a few mo-m e n t s o u t o f y o u r day. My h e a r t g o e s out to everyone as we see the end of this year and as we anticipate the new one. We’re in this together. Merry Christmas. love x Dua,” she continued with the soul-stir-ring note.

Director Olivia Wilde fired Shia LaBeouf from

‘Don’t Worry Darling’ANI | Washington

American a c t o r

Shia LaBeouf was original-

ly set to star in director Olivia

Wilde’s new film ‘Don’t Worry Darling’.

However, it has been re-vealed that he got fired from the project by the film’s director and was later replaced by Har-ry Styles back in Sep-tember.

According to E! News, in the light of FKA

Twigs’s lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend Shia LaBeouf, new details have come to light, as to why Shia was replaced from ‘Don’t Wor-ry Darling’. The film’s director Olivia Wilde had actually fired Shia LaBeouf from the pro-ject which also stars

Dakota Johnson, Florence Pugh, and Chris Pine.

Earlier it was speculated that LaBeouf left the movie citing scheduling conflicts, but even before filming could begin, Shia was let go from the project by Wilde owing to his display of poor behavior and clash with the cast and crew. As per E! News, a source said that peo-ple associated with the movie, including the director Olivia Wilde had found Shia to be off-putting.

This news comes just a couple of weeks after Wilde had voiced her support for the singer-song-writer, FKA twigs, who filed a lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend LaBeouf on December 11 for alleged sexual battery, assault, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

In the weeks since Shia has been accused of abuse, LaBeouf’s name has also been scrubbed off from the streaming service Netflix’s awards website.

Candace Cameron Bure denies joining brother Kirk Cameron’s

Christmas caroling protestsFox | Los Angeles

Candace Cameron Bure is shutting down rumours she was present at

her brother Kirk Cameron’s Christmas caroling protests.

Cameron, 50, was hit with intense backlash on social media after he organ-ized a second caroling event on Tues-day – one that was held in response to the stay-at-home order in effect in California because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I did not attend any recent car-oling events,” Bure, 44, tweeted on Thursday morning. “Also, I choose to follow the greater guidelines by wearing a mask and social distance when I’m in public.”

Despite not necessarily agreeing with her broth-er’s apparent stance on the mandates to remain inside, Bure took um-brage with the neg-ative remarks aimed at Cameron and de-fended the “Growing Pains” star as the two are incredibly close.

“I don’t appreciate the vile tweets about my family,” she wrote

on Twitter. “I believe respectful dia-logue is the key to being heard. Stay safe.”

On Tuesday evening, Cameron hosted another caroling protest at The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and fea-tured some 100 supporters who gath-ered for Christmas caroling without face masks.

Santa gifts to patients at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Manchester Chil-dren’s Hospital.

fiance gave a helping hand by sending special gifts from the wish-lists of patients at the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hos-pital.

BRAVE CF is the only global MMA promotion to host multiple events in Sweden in a single yearTDT | Manila

BRAVE Combat Federation, the Bahrain-based MMA promo-

tion is committed to develop-ing the sport of Mixed Martial Arts and is keen on expanding its global footprint and offering an international platform for all regions, thus creating a new ecosystem for the whole indus-try. One of the countries BRAVE CF has placed special emphasis on is Sweden.

“As part of an expansion to the European continent, a series of events were held in Sweden. With four events in four consec-utive weeks held in Stockholm, between August 1st and August 24, 2020, BRAVE Combat Fed-eration became the only global MMA promotion to host mul-tiple cards in Sweden within a single year, beating the current record by three events.” popular Sweden based MMA publication MMA Viking said in a recent report.

“On August 1st, BRAVE CF landed for the very first time

in Scandinavia with a packed fight night, headlined by Lou-is Glismann vs Henri Lintu-la, with Glismann topping Lintula with a second round submission.

A week later, on August 8th, another exciting card, this time with the clash of two BRAVE CF veterans in the main event of the evening. Former Welter-weight world champion Abdoul

Abdouraguimov beat England’s Carl Booth to get back to the title shot picture. The third con-secutive event was marked by the much anticipated return of Tahar “Fast Hands” Hadbi to the cage.

But the celebration did not last long for the Frenchman, who ended up being defeated via unanimous decision. The fourth and final show of the Swedish

series was headlined by one of the most promising prospects in all Europe, Mochamed Machaev, who remained undefeated in his professional career with a dominant unanimous decision win over Shoaib Yousaf.” the report stated

The impact and the value of such initiative is incalculable, and once again positions BRAVE Combat Federation as the lead-

ing force of developing the sport of Mixed Martial Arts in various regions and implementing a new, more sustainable system for the sport as a whole. BRAVE CF will continue to focus on Sweden and will take a keen interest in developing the MMA scene in the country as well as hold strong scouting programmes to sign MMA talents from the country.

Parks’ priority winning PBA crown not individual awards

TDT | Manila

Filipino-American Bobby Ray Parks Jr. has captured

his second statistical race title in the recent Philippine Bas-ketball Association (PBA) Phil-ippine Cup, the second time he achieved the feat after the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup as a rookie.

It was yet another individ-ual accolade for the 6-foot-4 swingman, son of the late Bobby Parks Sr., who is largely regarded as one of the greatest imports in the PBA.

But what would satisfy him more is not just an individual award. Rather, a championship for TNT Tropang Giga.

“At the end of the day, winning a championship is what matters the most,” said the 27-year-old Parks, who stressed a trophy for the team, and not individual awards, will fulfill his PBA mission.

“That’s the primary goal of every team, to win a champi-onship, and that’s also my pri-mary goal, to win a champion-ship and gets better,” added the former National Basketball As-sociation D-League, which is now known as NBA G League.

Parks emerged as the best individual performer in short-ed, one-conference 45th PBA season.

Since entering the pro league last year, winning his first title has been his ultimate goal.

In his pro debut with Black-water, Parks made a strong impact averaging 22.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals for 37.2 statistical points despite the Elite managing only to reach the quarterfinals.

In the Philippine Cup, Parks

registered 38.2 SPs on 22.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals in 16 games in the Clark bubble.

He only played in Game One of the Finals because of a left calf injury with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel winning the title in five games.

Parks said he is undergoing rehabilitation and hopes the injury heals soon enough as he declared his availability for the national team to the third win-dow of the International Bas-ketball Federation Asia Cup qualifiers in Clark in February.

“For as long as I am healthy, I am okay to play for the na-tional team. I just keep my op-tions open,” he said.

Parks admitted that he miss-es rolling with the Philippine national players and is gunning his engines to do so again.

“It would be my honour and privilege to join and represent the national team if they would have me. A lot has been going on, and I feel that we all should come together as one now more than ever,” said Parks.

Parks will fly to the US later this month.

BRAVE CF releases fight card for Russia debutThe official fight card for BRAVE CF 46 features the biggest local athletes competing with international stars

• The show will be headlined by the homecoming of Super Lightweight world champion Eldar Eldarov

TDT | Manama

BRAVE Combat Federation has long identified Russia as one of the biggest mar-

kets for the growth of mixed martial arts, and has made it a point to sign and nurture the talent from all corners of the continental-sized country. This means the fastest-growing or-ganization in the world will put on a star-studded event for its first show in the nation. The official fight card for BRAVE CF 46, in association with Krepost Selection, has been announced and will feature the biggest local athletes competing with inter-national stars.

The show will be headlined by the homecoming of Super Lightweight world champion Eldar Eldarov. He will defend his crown for the first time against top Brazilian veteran Leonardo Mafra. It will be the first time the historical belt - the first world title of the new weight-class - will be defended by a champion.

In the co-main event, BRAVE CF can confirm that Ali Bagau-tinov will make his promotion-al debut against Oleg Lichko-vakha. Ali is a two-time sambo world champion and has sev-eral other accolades in multi-ple combat sports, making him one of Russia’s most successful martial artists. He will take on 24-year-old Lichkovakha, who despite his age, has more than 20 pro bouts to his name and will look for the biggest win of his career at BRAVE CF 46.

Also set for an incredible fight night, will be the return of Heavyweight Konstantin Er-okhin, as he takes on Zhyrgalbek Chomonov, a WEF Champion in Kyrgyzstan. Another Kyrgyz star is Abdisalam Kubanych-bek, who will look for his third

BRAVE CF win against Jahongir Saidjamolov.

Roman Bogatov will also make his much-anticipated promotional debut as he begins his descent to Featherweight against Nurzhan Akishev. Mur-taza Talha, the two-time IMMAF

world champion, will continue his road to professional stardom after a stunning debut victory back at BRAVE CF 45. The KHK MMA product takes on Dmitriy Krivulets in a Catchweight bout of 90 kg.

BRAVE CF 46 takes place in association with Krepost Selec-tion on January 16th, in Sochi, Russia. The iconic event will mark Russia as the 21st country to host a BRAVE Combat Feder-ation event, an absolute record. Since 2016, the organization founded by His Highness Shai-kh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, has traveled to 20 different na-tions in several regions, some-thing that no other promotion has been able to accomplish in their first four years of opera-tions.

India bounce back to skittle AustraliaReuters | Melbourne

A resilient India bounced back from their embar-

rassing first Test exploits to bundle out Australia for just 195 and take a grip on the second Test in Melbourne after a riveting opening day yesterday.

After their horror show in Adelaide last week, where they lost by eight wickets and were skittled for 36 in their second innings, the tourists were desperate to start well.

And they delivered af-ter Australian captain Tim Paine won the toss and chose to bat in front of 27,615 socially-distanced fans, just short of the maximum allowed under coronavirus restrictions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

On a pitch offering turn and bounce, the hosts found it hard going against a high-quality attack led by Jasprit Bumrah (4-56), Ravi Ashwin (3-35) and the im-pressive Mohammed Siraj (2-40), making his debut for the injured Mohammed Shami.

Marnus Labuschagne top-scored with 48 but that was as good as it got.

Arsenal bounce back to beat Chelsea, Man Utd denied by LeicesterAFP | London

Arsenal eased fears of be-ing dragged into a relega-

tion battle with a stunning 3-1 win over Chelsea yesterday, as Manchester United’s Premier League title challenge stum-bled after they conceded a late equaliser to draw 2-2 at Leices-ter.

Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to win the FA Cup the last time they faced Chelsea in August, but less than five months on the Spaniard was under intense pressure after a run of one win in 10 league games.

Arteta had bemoaned his side’s fortune in recent weeks, but the Gunners’ luck turned on a night when he gave youngsters Gabriel Martinel-li and Emile Smith Rowe the chance to shine in the absence of more experienced figures such as David Luiz, Willian and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Kieran Tierney won a soft penalty for a push by Reece James and Alexandre Lacazette slotted home the spot-kick to open the scoring on 34 minutes.

Granit Xhaka then answered his critics after being stupidly sent off in a 1-0 defeat to Burn-ley earlier this month with a brilliant free-kick to double Arsenal’s lead just before half-time. A third consecutive away defeat for Chelsea further dam-ages their chances of competing for the title and there was no way back for Frank Lampard’s men once Bukayo Saka chipped in off the inside of the post 11 minutes after the break.

Tammy Abraham did pull a goal back five minutes from time and Chelsea could have set up a grandstand finish in stop-page time, but Jorginho’s pen-alty was saved by Bernd Leno.

Victory lifts Arsenal up to 14th, six points clear of the rel-egation zone, while Chelsea drop down to sixth on goal dif-ference.

In earlier Boxing Day action, Manchester United missed out on equalling a Premier League

record of 11 straight away wins as for once this season they paid for not finishing strongly.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men had come from behind in each of their previous away league games this season, but twice went in front at the King Power Stadium through Marcus Rash-ford midway through the first half and Bruno Fernandes 11 minutes from time.

“One point is not the worst result but we are disappointed we didn’t get away with three,” said Solskjaer.

“We had loads of big chanc-es and we could’ve finished it off. They are a very dangerous side.”

Harvey Barnes’s blistering strike levelled for Leicester before half-time and United were undone by Jamie Vardy’s movement in the box as the vet-eran striker latched onto Ayoze Perez’s cross and saw his shot deflect in off the unfortunate Axel Tuanzebe.
