Dear Readers,

Indonesia declared its independence on 17 August 1945. This year, the sovereignty will mark its 73rd anniversary. There are so many things to do especially to reach the goal of a fair and civilized Indonesia and to achieve equal welfare in every field.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) as one of the higher education centers in the country has always been willing to contribute to the nation and state. One way to celebrate independence is by contributing to the wide community; giving concrete contributions to take part in prospering the community.

These contributions are not only given at local or regional level, but also at national and international level. Thus far, there have been many researches from UNAIR experts which are part of applicative breakthrough fundamental at global level.

Rector Prof. Dr. H. Mohammad Nasih, MT, SE, Ak, CMA says that the civitas academica will always put some efforts to improve self-quality especially in education. With practiced skills, contributions given to the community can be at their maximum excellence.

“Let’s celebrate this independence by keep sharing benefits with the community,” the born Gresik man states.

He also says that the implementation of Three Pillars of Higher Education namely education, research, and community service must be enforced continually and with quality. This is an obligation for every campus. On the other side, to celebrate independence we can as well feel grateful, ponder on the battle of our heroes and let it inspire us to do good things in life.

This year UNAIR also celebrates its 64th Dies Natalis, on the next 10 November 2018 to be exact. Nasih is expecting that the Dies Natalis momentum will encourage the civitas academica to stay productive for the sake of education quality in Indonesia.

The Independence Day in Indonesia is always celebrated solemnly yet festively; from flag ceremonies, seminars on nationalism, to races or competitions which will get every member of the community together.

UNAIR also annually celebrates Independence Day. Usually after a solemn flag ceremony the next activities are some festive races and competitions.

The races the campus regularly holds among others are rhymes and poems, yell-yell, Javanese karaoke, slow bike, and putting on make-up with eyes closed. Moreover, the campus once also held paddle race, Javanese news reading for foreign students, and many others.

As a university aiming for the Top 500 Best Univer-sities in the world, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) often holds global level events, in the form of workshops, con-ferences, international seminars and many others.

From 16 to 20 July 2018, UNAIR held 5 Days In-ternational Workshop On Structure-guided Design of Drugs for Tropical Diseases SgDD 2018 at Institute of Tropical Disease (LPT). The workshop was inspired by various reasons such as drug discovery as a time-con-suming and expensive process. In the past, drugs were developed through extensive identification of bioactive compounds from, for example, traditional medicine.

The Head of Proteomic Laboratory LPT Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih, M.Si said that there was Prof. Wim G.J. Hol, PhD (Structural Biologist) as the keynote speaker. He is a Professor of Biochemistry from Biomo-lecular Structure Center, University of Washington.

UNAIR Alumna Leads East Java

Student from PalestineCompletes Doctoral Degree Exam

During the leadership of this Madiun native, East Java made a great development in economic sector. It means that UNAIR graduates have made a great contribution in society, especially in the politics and bureaucracy.

Recently, regional election was held in East Java. The goal was to find a leader after Soekarwo, who has served for two periods as governor (each period lasts five years).

In this election, an alumna of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Airlangga took part as a candidate. She was Khofifah Indar Parawansa. Af-ter the election was completed, she obtained the most votes and is entitled to become Governor for East Java from 2018 to 2023.

One of the parameters which led to this success was her clear vision and mission. Her track record has been excellent as she served as Minister of Social Affairs of Indonesia. It means, the ability of Surabaya native has been proven.

Khofifah enrolled at UNAIR in 1984 in political sci-ence major and graduated in 1990. As she came from an Islamic high school, she had some difficulties to adapt. She involved actively in some campus organizations so she could understand the condition of the surrounding environment easily. There are two most impressive lec-turers for Khofifah, the founder of FISIP UNAIR, the late Prof. Soetandyo Wignjosoebroto and Prof. Ramlan Sur-bakti. “Lecturers at UNAIR do not only teach but also inspire the students, “ she said.
