Pastor’s Note… There is nothing more attractive than appreciation and thanks. It’s something that moves us forward, draws us closer together, and adds speed to our obedience and faithfulness. Want to watch it affect someone? Open the door for someone to come in. They will reflexively pick up their pace in appreciation. Now, they might slow back down before they get all the way to you. But, that first reactive step, the one that’s taken in thanksgiving will be a little quicker, a little lighter than the one before it. I believe this is one way we can reflect the image of God. We can give thanks. When God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life, what was God doing? God was appreciating what could happen by grace through faith. This is why we do the work of the church? This is why we reach out to others. With God we want to appreciate what can happen by grace through faith, too. To live life without thanksgiving is to fool ourselves into thinking we can keep God at arm’s length and still enjoy a good life. Instead, the truth is, God invites us to come in and be with Him. The door is being held open right now for us to come in. The question is, have you sped up your steps towards God, yet? When we give thanks and appreciation to the Lord, God can move us into the next stage of our relationship with Him. In this stage, we go from sought after to those who are saved. Pastor’s Note…

There is nothing more attractive than appreciation and thanks.

John’s gospel describes it this way. “But, as many as received Him, to them He gave authority to become the children of God, even to them who believe on his name.” (John 1: 12)

The last question for us is this. Do we say, “Amen” to walking in this power of God? Will we be led by the Holy Spirit? Will we break through the bondage of our hurts and disappointments to find our joy again in appreciating what can happen when grace is met by our faith?

Have you reconciled yourself to living at a distance from what you know should happen in your life? Surely not. I know you want God to forgive you for how you have missed the mark. But, have you in appreciation reached out to those you’ve been short-armed with in the past and forgiven them? Do you still expect to get into heaven if you trample over or step around those who God placed in your path towards heaven’s open door?

Run towards heaven’s open door. But, in appreciation, forgive as you come.In grace and peace…Norman Ramsey

Our 2018 Christmas Cantata will be “LET THE WHOLE WORLD SING” by Joel Rainey. Since the birth of Christ, the gospel message has spread across the globe and Christmas is now celebrated annually in more that 160 countries. Despite our many differences, we celebrate the season united as one kingdom of believers. This is the theme of Let The Whole World Sing, a 30-minute musical which consists of seven movements plus a closing reprise. From the Celtic lilt of “In The Bleak Midwinter” to the African rhythms of “Come, Come, Emmanuel,” through the Caribbean styled “Christ is Born,” these arrangements gently underscore the universality of the gospel message. New music is blended with familiar, traditional carols in a wide variety of styles to create an interesting and fresh retelling of the Christmas story.

Serving Holy Communion

Pastor Ramsey, accompanied by other St. Paul’s members, has been taking The Lord’s Supper, sometimes called the Ecuharist, a Greek word meaning to give thanks, to our members at Adult Care Facilities and members’

homes. The initiative has been ongoing since summer and into the early fall. Rev. Ramsey has a compact portable case that hold the elements and allows for bringing this wonderful celebration to the faithful.

Participating with Pastor Ramsey in serving Communion is a wonderful and joyous experience; it heightens one’s awareness of sharing Christ’s last supper with those that cannot normally be in attendance. You can sense the individual’s heart swell with love, joy and appreciation.

Those that have been visited and served during the past several months are:*David Rowe – his spirit shines through and is thankful for the blessings our Lord

has provided. Though physically challenged at this time, his positive outlook on regaining mobility is his goal. His faith in Christ, along with the Holy Spirit, will ensure success.

*Joyce Hulvey – her joyful and spirited soul was reflective as the shining sun at noon. We noticed a Billy Graham book by her night stand and commented that she reads it and then rereads. Also, she has other inspirational books. We joined together and sang one of her favorite songs.

*Meade Loomis – what a delight to see her smiling face and enthusiastic presence. She indeed is one of St. Paul’s powerful prayer warriors. People would frequently comment, if you are in need of prayer support, Ms. Meade is the person to turn to. She indeed has the ear of our Lord.

*Rev. Rob Woodfin – thoroughly enjoyed the visit with Rob; his gusto spirit of life and thankfulness of God’s blessings shines through. Visiting with him is inspiring and his family’s engagement at St. Paul’s enriches us all. We are blessed to have their presence.

*Chick Crawford – also known as “coach” is doing fairly well; however, he is looking forward to doing considerably better. The leg brace is challenging and is somewhat bothering; bones do not heal as fast with the “mature” as it does with the younger.

*Anna Argenbright, Maxine Chittum and Delores Bradley are residing at the Legacy – we were able to visit with each one individually. We had prayer and thanked God for all of creation and for His Son, Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, we are provided with an opportunity for eternal life. One could truly sense the Holy Spirit in our presence.

Should you or someone you are aware of whose mobility is limited and is not in a position to attend Worship Service and would value taking Communion, please contact Rev. Ramsey or Evelyn Campbell to consider arrangements.

Come join us on November 28 at 5:30pm for a soup and sandwich dinner. Following dinner, we’ll grab our coats and step back in time by journeying with Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. We’ll sing Christmas hymns as we walk from St. Paul’s to our own pavilion (the stable). There we will meet shepherds, wise men, angels, and the baby Jesus. SERVE Committee… Our first frost, maybe even hard freeze of Fall is upon us, making us all think of the good family times ahead for most of us in the Holiday Season… and the sadness that can come with being alone, or with disrupted lives and broken spirits. While we update you with Serve Committee activities and plans, please keep thinking and

suggesting as the Spirit moves within you as to how St. Paul’s, and all of us, can serve as the Lord asks us to.

The fresh sheets and mattress covers were warmly received by the residents of the Ritenour Rest Home, provided in partnership with Christ UMC.  These sheet sets made an immediate improvement to the daily life of the people who live there. Thanks again to all who made this possible with your time, gifts and work! Looking ahead, Serve will work with everyone at St. Paul’s to help bring a nice Christmas to the Ritenour residents at an event on December 18th. Please look for the Ritenour Resident “Angel Tree” in the Narthex beginning on November 4th.

We now have the volunteers needed for the Mission Meal program for the Sunday meal for November 18th and December 16th. Thanks to these volunteers, and to all who make the meals possible throughout the year… And there’s always 2019!!

In November, we’ll hear from the leadership at New Directions about how this non-profit organization works to assist clients re-establish their lives following an occurrence of emotional, physical, or sexual violence in our area. Your generosity through the annual Lenten Offering is making a significant improvement in their ability to assist clients; I hope you can hear them when they make a presentation to the United Methodist Men at their breakfast on November 17th. In addition, they will speak during the services on the following Sunday, November 18th. Please see a member of the Serve team if you want more information.

Your Serve Team will meet again Tuesday, November 13th at 5:30 PM in St. Paul’s library. Please attend if you want to join this active, fun and vital group, or if you have any suggestions or questions.

There is only one more week until St. Paul’s annual Country Store and Tenderloin dinner!

While this is a big fundraiser for the church, it is also a wonderful meal accompanied by great fellowship. Together, we can make this a record-breaking event. A major portion of the monies collected will go directly to the CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND DRIVE.

The event will be on Saturday, November 10th from 3:00pm to 6:30pm. Tickets for the dinner are $12 for adults and $6 for children. A great turnout last year meant we almost ran out of food. While walk-ins are welcome, an advance ticket means you are guaranteed a meal. If you have not bought your ticket yet, please do so soon.

Your help has been critical in making this event a year-after-year success. So, please stop by our table in the Narthex for more information on how you can volunteer your talents to make this event the best ever!

A PROGRAM TO BENEFIT ST. PAUL’S MORTGAGE

Here is an opportunity for every member of St. Paul’s UMC, family members and friends of St. Paul to participate in a program that will have mortgage reduction as its primary benefit. From time to time other pressing needs might also benefit. The program,

sponsored by the United Methodist Men of St. Paul, and approved by the Church Council is now in effect and accepting new participants. The program: KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS, a community service of Kroger for non-profit organizations. Basically, a formula used by Kroger returns a portion of your eligible purchases to St. Paul’s quarterly. To participate, there is only one prerequisite - each participant must have a Kroger Plus card, and with that card in hand just follow the steps outlined at the web site shown below. If you do not have a Kroger Plus card, one can be obtained at the Customer Service Desk at the local Kroger store.

Eligible Purchases Consists of retail purchases made at Staunton’s Kroger store by an eligible participant who presents an enrolled Kroger Plus card at the time of purchase. The following items do not qualify for the rewards program and are not included as part of total purchases: Tobacco, Alcohol, prepaid debit cards, fuel, Sales Tax and a few other minor items. Regular gift cards (and there are hundreds to choose from) do qualify for inclusion in the program. Payment for purchases may be made with cash, check, and credit/debit card. TO SIGN UP - IMPORTANT Go online to www.kroger.com/communityrewards and follow the steps to open an account and register your Kroger Plus card. The NPO # (Account) for St. Paul’s is GP629. You will need this number when signing up for the program.

More than one Kroger Plus card in a household: if all the cards in a household are already linked for fuel points, only one household member needs to enroll in this program; all others will follow automatically. If more than one card in a household and are not already linked, one household member needs to sign up and other household members need to go to the Customer Service Desk and have their card linked to the member signed up for this program. When getting a Kroger Plus card, it is the responsibility of the participant to confirm that the card is linked properly and enrolled in the KCR program.

For those members who do not have a computer, a family member or friend with a computer can do the process for you. If this is not possible, see Lou Phelps.

The degree of success of this program for St. Paul is based entirely on the number of members, family and friends who are properly enrolled in the program and have their cards scanned at the checkout. We encourage those who will be participants to sign up as soon as possible.

If you have questions, see or contact Lou Phelps at [email protected] ; 886-0845 or cell 414-0013.
