lot of news appears in the Board report this month.

However I extend thanks to all those members who have taken on duties with the club both now and in the past. These thanks extend especially to Brian Spear, who is now enjoying his bowls much more after having stood down from the Selection and Match committees. Brian has a long and distinguished background with the club.

About 70 members on the greens last week and numerous competitions are progressing.

Congratulations to our 5 members participating in the Zone Coaching Course, hosted at our Club. Additional coaches will be most welcome.

Members will notice some new sponsors appearing in this edition. These are local businesses considered to be premium Mosman entities with which we are proud to be associated. If members have other businesses they wish to suggest as a sponsor, please advise me.

As championships and competitions progress, I recommend members refer to the Club’s website for results and announcements, it is informative and up to date.

NOTE:

Members should be diligent in recording their names for games,

and attending accordingly. The Bowls officers, and other players

are seriously inconvenienced by failure to comply.

he number of members playing bowls each week has grown substantially. Welcome back to those who have just started to play again.

The AGM was held on the 13 September. We are very lucky to have such able members on the Board. It has been a very difficult year dealing with the many restrictions due to Covid-19 and the Board have managed it very smoothly. Social distancing will be continuing for the foreseeable future.

The Championship Pairs concluded in September. Judy Moyes and Trish Tamaoki won the event. The Championship Triples have commenced with a a good number of teams entered. It will be played in September and October and may be played on Wednesday or Saturday. Good luck everyone.

The coaching course commenced in September, hosted by our Club. Twelve players signed up for the course. It is quite intense and our first lesson focused on people management and safety. Our club is different to the larger clubs who have first aid trained staff to help with an accident.

The letterbox drop to attract new members has resulted in quite a few new member applications. These players will need coaching and mentors so it is great that there are a few members attending the coaching course. We have one new member this month, Heather Clemens - do make her welcome.

We have just received the news that inter-club competitions can re-commence. The District Triples will go ahead at West Pymble with Mosman Women's’ Bowling Club entering two teams. Judy Moyes, Trish Tamaoki and Betty-Anne Cleveland in one team, and Loyce Davis, Pam Carpenter and Jill Kehoe in the other team. Good luck players.

I have been requested to ask all members to ensure their names are written down for social bowls days. The selection committee have recently had instances where extra players turn up having forgotten to put their name down. This makes it very difficult to organise the rinks. Worse still, players put their names down and don’t turn up. It only takes a minute to ring the bowls office between 9.30 and 10.00 to check whether you put your name down or to withdraw.

We have all been enjoying playing in our Club’s Major Championships. For those members who may be unaware, it is a requirement that you wear the official club uniform - the club shirt and the dark royal blue pants or skirt.

Cheers

T

Almost 60 members attended our recent 2020 AGM to approve our Annual Report and Accounts and to elect our 2020/21 Board.

Our subsequent Board meeting confirmed Directors Portfolios as per the previous year. Your President as Chairman, is also responsible for sponsorship and public relations. Richard O’Brien is Treasurer.

Scott Denham is Vice President and Bowls Secretary, and Cathy Wilson is also Vice President and social secretary. Barbara Anderson is Secretary and Licensee, whilst Gay Suters has the New members and OH &S

Portfolios. Stephen Lewis continues as Head of House, and John Candy is membership liaison/retention. Peter Smith is in charge of Grounds and Maintenance.

The meeting also confirmed that Lynn Anderson is the new Duty Officer Coordinator, and that the Selection Committee comprises Bruce Bodinnar (chair) Scott Denham and John Rock, with consultation on Open Pennants selections with Jill Kehoe as MWBC selection committee Chair. Jeff Hole and Loyce Davis will join Scott Denham on the match committee.

Although apprehensive in the COVID environment, the Board is pleased to confirm that we will proceed with the Patrons Day on 3rd October, and our Melbourne Cup function on 3rd November.

Also we will proceed with the Mayoral Trophy, Christmas Party, and Presidents Fun Day. All this depends on Covid improvement.

The Board noted Judy Moyes and Trish Tamaoki’s success in the Ladies’ Pairs. Congratulations ladies.

Scott and Snowy have constructed a new roof over the Barbecue so it is operable during bad weather.

It was resolved to increase Wednesday and Saturday green fees (inclusive of afternoon tea) to $20.00 from 1st January 2021. Members will be aware that the last fee increase was 3 years ago, and that the Club’s income stream is likely to be reduced over the next few years due to reduced income from our investment portfolio. Additionally, Tuesday green fees will increase to $15.00 and a part game (less than 18 ends) remains $10.00.

The Board encourages members to use the credit card facility. You may pay for green fees and scones and raffle tickets at the bar before play commences.

Gay Suters has arranged 3000 leaflets for a membership drive, and expressed thanks to all those members who volunteered to distribute them.

Lynn Anderson has volunteered to take on the Duty Officer Co-ordinating role as Ian Fielden has relinquished that role due to ill health.

Tables in the Clubhouse have been rearranged to make spacing more appropriate.

The Board continues to receive complaints that some members are very slow in changing ends on the green, and do not comply with some of the proper etiquette of Bowls. The Bowls office endeavours to facilitate those bowlers as much as possible and we seek members’ cooperation. For those members who walk more slowly than others we recommend that as soon as you have completed your bowls, you proceed to the seat at the other end. Additionally, members should refrain from licking their fingers when about to bowl. Precaution is paramount in the current environment.

We now have sanitiser stands at the entry and exit. Please take the opportunity to use them, and ensure you sign in and out on occasions other than Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

At the next meeting the Board will be considering the new Honour Board format to be placed on the Northern Clubhouse wall, further details for upstairs, the Lake Conjola visit, and a proposed Friday Twilight Games proposal for the summer.

Four Pennant team-mates came together on Wednesday 2 September to compete for the 2020 Pairs Championship title. This was always going to be a well contested match and all four very worthy finalists, having played in some grueling rounds to reach the final. Jill Kehoe and Sue Addison made up one team with Judy Moyes and Trish Tamaoki the other; all excellent draw bowlers. Judy and Trish got away to a

good lead first up. I witnessed some fabulous bowls, often with the last bowl of the end taking the shot from the opposing team. The final score was not in any way reflective of the quality of this match. Judy and Trish were unstoppable despite the most valiant efforts of Jill and Sue. The match was played in the best of spirits. Judy and Trish won through 24/6 and are very worthy 2020 Pairs Champions. Loyce Davis

I’ll begin as usual with my birth in Perth W.A.(a Sandgroper!) I’m sure my arrival 12 years after my sister, Barbara, was a great surprise for my parents and consequently I was almost an only child as my sister married when I was eight and moved to the country. I remember I was very excited to be her flower girl.

Both my parents were sporty, my Father was a state rower and my Mother a state hockey player, they both played a mean game of tennis. My sister also excelled in tennis and bowls. Sadly she died of cancer aged 60.

I went to school at Perth College, an Anglican school for girls run by the Sisters of the Church which I loved and still keep in touch with via the Old Girls Assoc. In fact I am currently on a small committee of the Opera Foundation Society in which 4 of the 6 members are PC old girls.

Perth was a wonderful place to grow up in, a big country town really before the mining boom. I enjoyed playing tennis, basketball, hockey and going to the fabulous beaches. Rottnest Island was always a favourite holiday stay.

After leaving school my father obtained a position for me with the National Bank of Australia (never NAB!) as I couldn’t really decide what I wanted to do. I tried secretarial school for a few months but very boring! I settled in to the bank as a ledger machinist (pre computers of course!).

Somehow I developed a ‘travel bug’ and in the first year of working I went on a ‘cruise’ on a cargo ship up the west coast to Derby, calling into all ports on the way delivering all sorts of cargo including cattle. I especially remember Broome, then a small pearling town, and waking up to the ship sitting on the mud at low tide!

The following years I cruised to Singapore and then to Sydney where I stayed with a friend in fabulous Kings Cross which certainly whetted my appetite for another adventure! I left Perth, my family, friends and job and set off to Sydney not knowing anyone in ‘the Big Smoke or Sin City’ as it was known in the West. Luckily for me I was given an address to stay, a boarding house (Miss Mac’s) in Kurraba Road Neutral Bay. After a couple of weeks of homesickness, I found employment and settled down. I loved travelling into the city by ferry, watching the AMP and Opera House being built and marvelling at the beautiful harbour.

Around the same time a couple of young lads arrived at the boarding house from Lismore, one a young solicitor to do his articles with a major legal firm. One thing led to another and we married in Perth two years later.

Page 11: NEWSLETTERNEWSLETTER - Mosman Bowling Club

Our honeymoon was travelling from Perth to Sydney by train which made five changes in those

days before the Indian Pacific!

We lived in Frenchs Forest, East Lindfield and Castle Cove. After 20 years and 3 wonderful children the marriage broke down and I moved to Lane Cove and back to work which was a major challenge.

I moved to Northbridge and retired in 2005 after a satisfying career working in various companies.

I still love to travel and have done many trips, especially with my niece, Lee, who once sent me a post card from Greece, ‘wish you were here.’ I borrowed a back pack and set off to join her and her friend to back pack through Turkey and the Greek Islands. I also met her in Canada and we set off up the Alaskan Marine Highway (also know as the Inside Passage) on the local ferries, often sleeping overnight on the sun deck (a misnomer is ever there was one!). More recently we have driven around Iceland and visited our niece on Christmas Island, not in the detention centre! You

may remember her from when I brought her to the club and she won the ‘Thong Throwing’ Trophy!

Retirement has been fulfilling and rewarding watching my family grow with success and 8 lovely grand children. My eldest son and family live in Hong Kong, after also living and working in Bangkok and Hanoi so I know Asia quite well! Soon after retiring I qualified to become a marriage celebrant

which I did not pursue for very long. I also worked for the National Trust for over 10 Years.

I belong to a group of ladies called The Butterflies who meet each month to discover places of interest around Sydney. I also took up cycling and have been riding in New Zealand, Victoria, WA and Qld with a group from Vic and NSW. I have always enjoyed playing tennis and continue to do

so, which leads me to….

How was I introduced to Bowls?

was working for a company in Belrose and we often went to the local bowling club for lunch. I watched the ladies and thought it looked fun, so decided to learn. I noticed a coaching course with the Mosman Evening College and applied. Of course it was held at the MBC where I consequently

joined in 2002.

My most memorable win

I won the Minor Singles in 2006, thanks to my coaches Ailsa, Gerry and the late John Grigg. Another memorable win was the lucky member prize ($120.00) about the same time, I’ve hardly

won anything since!

I particularly enjoy the social and competitive aspect of the game of bowls. I also value the friends I

have made at the club and really enjoy the yearly trips away.

How I would like to see MBC develop or improve?

In the time I have been a member (18 years), I have seen much development and improvement and would like to see it ongoing. The management does a great job and we have to keep the high

standard by electing and employing good people.

My advice to newcomers Is to relax and play as much as you can in social and competition games

and accept that some days you are brilliant and other days hopeless! It happens to all of us

Page 12: NEWSLETTERNEWSLETTER - Mosman Bowling Club

Two of Mosman's finest bowlers contested our Club's inaugural Open Singles Championship, for the first time open to both genders. Perennial Club Champion Scott Denham met George Lindsay who was playing his first Singles Final.

Scott got away to an early lead , and after just 5 ends was ahead 11/2. While George steadied and managed to bridge the gap somewhat, by the halfway mark Scott had moved away

to hold that 9-shot lead. From then on it was all Scott who was drawing beautifully and very much into his steady rhythm - while George tried every trick in his book to upset that rhythm, Scott seemed to always have the answer.

The end result was a 31/11 Championship win to Scott who is bowling as well as ever, notching his 16th Club Singles Championship! And well done to George who played so well through the rounds - no doubt he will be hungry to go one better next year.

Over two weekends Mosman Bowling Club hosted a Bowls NSW coaching course for Club Coaches. Bowlers from Warrawee, Killara, Seaforth, North Sydney and

Mosman attended.

Margaret Sheean was the teacher and she did

an excellent job presenting,

The first Sunday concentrated on managing yourself and the role of the coach. The course outlined the necessary qualities eg. leadership, organisation, awareness, observation and evaluation - plus realistic goal setting for students. Next was managing the environment, eg.

safety on the green.

The next weekend Margaret spoke about managing our students. She illustrated a coaching session, outlining a 45 minute lesson. We then had to present a lesson ourselves. There

was a fair bit of homework and all participants passed the course.

The life saved could be yours . . . .

If a casualty is not breathing, it is vital you call 000 and immediately start CPR. A defibrillator should be applied whenever CPR is performed.

MBC’s defibrillator is kept in the bowls office, on top of the cupboard on the back wall. A sign

indicates its location. You do not need training to be able to save someone’s life with the use of a defibrillator. After the electrode pads have successfully been applied to the patient’s chest, the device will begin by analysing the victim's heart rhythm and will then guide the rescuer through each step with visual and/or voice prompts.

A defibrillator will only deliver a shock if one is required by the patient.

To see how a defibrillator works go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVIxQk8OPkg

I'm not just involved in bowls, I'm committed.......... Do you know the difference between involvement and commitment? Think of

bacon and eggs. The chicken is involved, the pig is committed. A sincere thank you to each MBC member who once again showed support for our wonderful club by delivering maybe one, maybe hundreds (literally) of leaflets to tempt others to join us in bowling at MBC. A grand effort with around 3,000 going into letter boxes.

I felt it time for me to report on David's health to the family of members that make up the wonderful Mosman Bowling Club.

With the help and encouragement of so many he was able to bowl as long as it was physically possible and his last games, despite diminishing eye sight, were very precious to him.

We both thank those that encouraged him to keep trying and for the many kind messages passed on. As his physical strength and eyesight diminished full care became inevitable.

He is now permanently in Montana Aged Care Facility in Harbour Street. He rings me every morning for a chat and is in touch by phone with his four children regularly.

Thank you all for your kindness to us both at this testing time.

Judy

PS David has donated his bowls gear. If interested there are 2 new shirts, 3 old ones, a waterproof jacket and near new shoes. A small donation to the club would be appropriate.

DID YOU KNOW OR THOUGHT YOU KNEW??

1. Minimum distance of a live bowl from the mat line?

Answer 14 metres

2. Minimum distance of a rebounding jack from the mat line?

Answer 18 metres

3. Minimum distance of a delivered jack from the mat line?

Answer 21 metres

4. Minimum distance of the mat line (front of mat) from the rear ditch?

Answer 2 metres

The law we all know is the minimum distance a jack must be delivered

and is the most common reason an umpire is called. Often skippers use

the mark on the bank and the position of the mat to estimate the

distance.

There have been nine enquiries from prospective members wishing to learn bowls in the past month - this has certainly kept our coaches very busy. I am pleased to report five Mosman members signed up for the Bowls Australia Club Coaches course held over the past two Sundays. This is a very comprehensive course and I am pleased to report that Pam Carpenter, Loyce Davis, George Fotis, Robyn Novakovic and Cathy Wilson are now BA accredited coaches – congratulations to them all! They will be a very welcome addition to the Mosman coaching team and will ensure the coaching programme at Mosman continues to produce competent new bowlers and provide beneficial training for experienced bowlers and our pennant teams. It is no longer possible for me to continue as Coaching Co-ordinator as we now spend the majority our time in the Southern Highlands. I have enjoyed my time in this role, especially seeing our new members develop their skills and become part of our bowling community. It was also very rewarding to see the enthusiastic turn-out for circuit training pre Covid-19 – hopefully this can resume in the near future. Sincere thanks to all our coaches who have supported me and have so willingly given their time to the club. The Board will appoint a new Coaching Co-ordinator in the next few weeks. Keep practicing - and see a coach if you need help! Julie Hayden Coaching Co-ordinator.
