Refurbishment of the Club Office and Bowls Office is almost completed. Thanks are due to Peter Smith, and Scott and Snowy again.

Regrettably we have been advised by the Department of Education and school principal that the school grounds are no longer available to us for any purpose, and that the school is to be fenced with a 2.1 metre high Colorbond fence. We are s t r en uo us l y o p p o s i n g t h i s prohibition, and are partnering with the Council in that process. However a satisfactory outcome is by no means guaranteed.

This will worsen our parking situation, and general vehicular access to the Club premises. We shall advise further.

Thanks again to those members who have volunteered as Duty and Bowls Officers. Your contribution is most valuable.

The Men’s Pennants are having mixed results, and it is worthwhile checking the Club website week by week. However, the Women’s Pennants have concluded with 1st Grade placed 3rd, and 2nd Grade placed 4th. Congratulations to all, and especially to 1st grade who defeated Premiers Neutral Bay in the last match of the season.

y the time you read this I should be on the Black Sea. But I leave you in the capable hands of your other Board members.

April has been busy with both Women’s and Men’s Pennants, Waterman Trophy rounds, opening of entries for Presidents singles, Women’s Pairs, Mixed Pairs and Singles Championships, as well as very good social attendances. Our Anzac Day Ceremony was most successful, and thanks go to those in the club who have served their country in various ways, as well as the organisers of the Day.

May will be busy. On Sunday 5th, Julie Hayden is coordinating a District Coaching Clinic at our club. The Waterman semis and final will be played and the GPS competition will resume.

All of these events place pressure on our greens which are maintained to the highest standard by Scott and Snowy. On that point, I commend the report in this edition of our special unveiling of the plaque by the Mayor for the Scott Denham Green.

Finishes for the Ladies Powder Room are being resolved, and new plans for refurbishment of the Main Club Room have been initiated.

2019 Presidents' Trophy Entries Closing Soon......

The 3rd year of the Presidents' Trophy Singles

competition has been well subscribed once again, but

there is still room for more!

Entries close on Saturday 4th May, so be quick to place

your name on the entry list!

This new competition has proven to be very popular as it

is so easy to compete, with just 1 Round to be played

each month, commencing in late-May. A marker is not required, as the jack is

placed by the winner of each previous end. The winner is the first bowler to

reach 25 shots.

GPS Bowls at Mosman again in 2019

Mosman will once again be the home for the Great

Public Schools Old Boys Bowling Association (GPS)

Competition through 2019.

The season commences on Sunday 19 May and is

played on every 3rd Sunday of the month, culminating on 17 November.

Schools competing this year are Sydney Grammar, Kings, Newington,

Riverview, Scots, St. Josephs, Shore and Knox.

Often substitute bowlers are required on short notice (subs can play just twice

for any 1 team) , so please advise Stephen Lewis if you would like to be put on

the call list.

Tosh Czinege and Julie Hayden and in the seniors competition Betty Anne Cleveland, Rosemary Dale, Margaret Gillis and Robyn Novakovic. We are hosting the semi-finals and finals on the 30th April, this is always a great opportunity to see some excellent bowling – if you missed it this year we may be asked to host a district event next year - I always enjoy watching these top players.

Mosman is entering a team in the Turramurra Trophy to be held on the 6th May. This is an annual event open to players who have not played either Grade 1 or Grade 2 in the current year. Our teams are Edwina Legg, Robin Bower, Cathy Wilson and Jacqui Bajtala as skip, the other team is Angela Jones, Mary Miller, Rosemary Dale and Gay Suters as skip.

Our pairs competition has been drawn and all matches must be played by the due date. Entries are open for the mixed pairs and the President’s Singles. At this stage we don’t have many girls entering the President’s Singles – please put your name down for this competition, you don’t need a marker and you have a month to play the game.

Cheers

he pennants season has now concluded – Congratulations to our teams! Grade 1 came 3rd winning both its final two games against the competition winners – Neutral Bay and runners up – Belrose. A great end to the season and very exciting to watch. Grade 2 (which was promoted from Grade 3 last year after winning the competition), did well coming 4th. The Saturday morning games have gone smoothly this year, most finishing in time for social bowls and a big thank you to the social bowlers who were most considerate.

Bronwyn Fitzpatrick is entering the Australian Blind Bowling National Championships in Perth, leaving Sydney on the 28th April with Ailsa Maccallum. You may have noticed Ailsa coaching Bronwyn at social bowls. We wish you every success. Bronwyn is also trying out for the Trans Tasman Blind Bowling Championship also being held in Perth. A big thank you to the Board who generously helped with the expenses of this trip.

After the pennants we have two teams playing in the North Shore District Fours on the 29th and 30th April. In the open competition we have Loyce Davis, Ann Barron,

It was agreed that a short survey of members be conducted regarding responses to our Sponsors.

The Rotary Club of Mosman has expressed interest in conducting a snooker competition at our Club later this year, and invite our club members to participate.

Parking remains an issue for resolution with the school. The Education Department is proposing a new fence around the school which may impact our Club. We are in discussions on this topic.

Your President, Paul Ward-Harvey

At the April Board meeting numerous con t inu ing improve men t and maintenance matters were addressed, many of which are covered in this month’s Presidents report.

Our finances remain sound, and commendations were extended to those members who have volunteered for numerous duties.

Tell us a little about yourself - family, career before retirement, sports played etc

I was born into a building and boating family in the Central Queensland harbour town of Gladstone in July 1936. I had three brothers who all owned sailing or motor boats, and so I was introduced to boating from about 3 years of age when I started going out with them around Port Curtis and outside to the Great Barrier Reef. They gave me my first boat, the “Viking” when I was 10, and I went on to enjoy owning a variety of boats for the next 67 years until 2013, when I finally said goodbye to my last one, a 34 foot cruiser called “Nepenthe”, an Egyptian word meaning no pain no sorrow. Sailing was my favourite sport, but I also played cricket, tennis, golf and hockey. After completing my schooling, just like my brothers, I undertook an apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner with my father, and started my working life building homes and shops.

I meet my wife Bernice at a Port Curtis Sailing Club blind date movie night. She was a nurse working at the Bundaberg Hospital, who was home for a weekend with her family in Gladstone. I fell in love with her that night, and asked would she marry me. We celebrated 60 years of happy marriage in January this year. We had 2 children, a daughter who married a grazier and lives on a remote outback cattle property in Queensland. They have 2 daughters, both of whom are graziers. Our son completed a PHD in laser physics at Macquarie University, and moved to Silicon Valley in the USA over 30 years ago to work in the medical laser business. He is still there, and married to an American and has 4 children. Living in Sydney, we are half way between them all, just a 17 drive to the Queensland cattle property, or a 17 hour flight to San Francisco. Growing up I loved listening to top 40 music on radio, and always wanted to be a radio announcer. I was a member of the Gladstone Apex Club, and entered an Apex district public speaking contest, and chose the Americas Cup as my subject. I was excited to be announced as the winner, and decided immediately to drive to Rockhampton the very next day, to get an announcers job at the nearest radio station 4RO. My audition didn’t go too well, but was told that when a vacancy occurred, I would be considered. That happened just 2 weeks later, when I got a phone call and was offered an announcing position, providing I could start in 2 weeks. I said thank you and yes I could, and then told Bernice. Fortunately she approved, and we started preparing for the big move with a young family to Rockhampton, that would make a major change to my life. I discovered that 4RO was one of many stations in the Australian Radio Network, which was owned and operated by J Albert & Sons, a privately owned music publishing, artist management and radio broadcasting company based in Sydney. On my first day, I was greeted by 4RO’s Programme Manager, who gave four hours training, and then said you are going live “on air” this afternoon. From that first exciting day on radio, (no television around in those days) I continued working for the Albert Family for

Page 9: NEWSLETTER - Mosman Bowling Club · THE SCOTT DENHAM GRETHE SCOTT DENHAM GREEN. Refurbishment of the Club Office and Bowls Office is almost ... will resume. All of these events place

the next 35 years. Starting at the bottom, I progressed through their Network Stations and Ranks from 4RO Rockhampton to 4BC Brisbane, 2CC Canberra and finally to 2UW Sydney, until I retired in 1993 as the Network General Manager of the Australian Radio Network, after it was sold to an American company.

How were you introduced to bowls, and why Mosman Bowling Club? Bernice worked as the Administrator / Registered Nurse at Mosman Grove Self Care Units, and a number of Mosman Bowling Club members lived there. They kept telling her that I should come and have a bowls roll up with them. I finally said yes, and in 1998 joined Jack Harkness and Don McDonald to see what this old mans game was all about. I enjoyed it and filled out a member’s application that day, and started playing that week. Within 2 months I was invited to join the Board and take on Membership and Marketing to get new members, as the club was loosing members and going backwards, with only 1 or 2 new members joining each year. I asked a group of six of the youngest and more energetic members to join me in a big marketing campaign with open days, street and shopping centre stalls, house door knocking, and of course some radio advertising. The result of our first year was that over 50 new members joined.

How long have you been playing bowls, and what was your most memorable win? I have been playing lawn bowls for over 21 years, and am still trying to get my name up on the Club Champions board, although I may be running out of time to achieve this challenge. However, every time that I play bowls, and end up being part of a winning team, they are all memorable occasions for me. Perhaps my most memorable winning occasion overall, happened way back in 1937, when I took out the top prize at the Gladstone Harbour Festival Baby Show, going home with the Grand Champions Trophy. What a curly haired beauty I used to be.

What do you particularly enjoy about bowls? I enjoy each game of bowls because it gives me an opportunity to mix with a variety of people, with whom I may not otherwise have had the opportunity to be with. When you first see bowls being played, it looks so easy, but it is not. Each end can produce some challenging situations, which can flow from skilled or poor deliveries together with good or bad luck. However, you will find that whatever way a game progresses, your team members will be with you all the way.

How would you like to see Mosman BC develop or improve further? We need to keep up with the marketing of the excellent sporting and social facilities that our club has, and which our members currently enjoy, which are somewhat hidden away in the centre of Mosman. We can’t expand in size or numbers very much, but we should ensure that all our facilities are kept up to date and welcoming. As the city grows and more cars appear, wouldn’t it be nice to have a member’s car park under one of our greens.

Finally, what advice do you have for our newer bowlers? Turn up whenever you can and be prepared to have another great day playing lawn bowls at Mosman. Do a few practice roll ups before each game to get the feel of the greens, then go out and have a great game.

Over 40 years Scott Denham has seen hundreds of members come and go. He is always approachable. He is available for information and advice. He regularly organises our Pennants, Tournaments, and championships, and oversees the welfare of our grounds.

But his paramount role is as our greenkeeper. Scott has sown, planted, fertilised, watered, sprinklered, cut, rolled, weeded, repaired, renovated and coaxed our greens to perfection. It’s the greens that we rely upon, and which he labours away to have in excellent condition.( not to forget Snowy).

That token is to name the Green which has been known for the past 117 years, as the Church Green, The Scott Denham Green.

So after 40 years of this commitment, the members, past, present, and future, wish to acknowledge his devotion to the greens of Mosman by an appropriate, permanent and prominent token.

We had a wonderful crowd for Anzac Day with 76 attendees and 56 playing bowls after the service. The weather also played a part in the success of the day as it was a beautiful, sunny day and perfect for being outside.

The day started with a light lunch of meat pie and salad followed by a Magnum ice cream before we headed out to the flagpole for our Anzac Service.

Our guest of honour, Jim Kemp, has sadly decided he can no longer bowl but he was very keen to continue to play his part in the Anzac Service and recite the ode. It was lovely to see him and he had ten members and friends come along to support him, including one granddaughter who came all the way from Melbourne.

For once our other WW2 Veteran, Bill Purdy, was able to join us. Bill is usually involved elsewhere on the day but it was wonderful that, this year, he was with us at MBC and was able to regale some of us with his memories.

Richard Balnaves again took on flag duties and two other Servicemen, Ian Fielden and new member Peter Watson, rounded off our medal parade.

Ann Barron and Richard O’Brien also played a part in the service and we thank all for their participation.

The service was followed by 21 ends of bowls. Thanks to Barbara Anderson for putting together the teams. There were no winners or losers on the day but a good time seemed to be had by all.

The Social Committee of Caroline Duhigg, Pam and Alan Carpenter, Jeannie and Doug Crease, Jill Kehoe and Les and Mary Miller did a great job of getting the day up and running. Thanks to all for making it run smoothly. Many hands certainly made light work.

As we approach a number of singles competitions the following reminder may be of value. At a Zone 9 meeting the chairman of Zone 9 umpires made the point that many players do not know how to mark a singles game. A number of examples of incidents that have happened in Zone Singles Championship matches were tabled. Two of these were as follows:

∞ In a singles match the marker had retreated to the other end prior to the players agreeing the score for the end just finished. During measuring, one of the players accidentally moved the jack. While the Law states that the opposition player must replace the jack into its original position the marker should have remained at the head with the players to assist, if asked, in deciding where the jack should be correctly repositioned.

∞ In another important match the marker was sitting down chatting to a colleague when the player on the mat required information about the position in the head. This resulted in the player becoming frustrated at being unable to attract the attention of t h e m a r k e r , l o s i n g h i s concentration and with it his temper. Markers should be s t a n d i n g a t t h e h e a d concentrating

concentrating on the game in hand.

The duties of the marker are spelt out in Rule 42 of the Laws of the Sport of Bowls. A summary is as follows:

In the absence of an umpire the marker must ensure that all aspects of play are carried out according to the laws of the game. So an understanding of the laws is important.

The marker must:

∞ centre the jack. ∞ make sure the jack is at least

21 metres from the front of the mat. Measure or call an umpire to do so if unsure.

∞ STAND to one side of the rink, behind the jack and away from the head. (In other words don’t sit down).

∞ W H E N A S K E D a n s w e r SPECIFIC questions from the player on the mat. This may include jack position, which bowl the marker considers to be shot, how many shots are held, the position of a bowl relative to the jack etc. (The word “specific” is important. It means not giving unsolicited advice or opinion about any circumstances in a game including who has shot at any time

The Marker in a Singles Game

Page 15: NEWSLETTER - Mosman Bowling Club · THE SCOTT DENHAM GRETHE SCOTT DENHAM GREEN. Refurbishment of the Club Office and Bowls Office is almost ... will resume. All of these events place

time. If asked for information answer the SPECIFIC question without embellishment).

∞ mark all touchers and remove chalk from non-touchers.

∞ s t o p a b o w l f r o m a neighbouring rink that may interfere with the head.

∞ if players agree, remove dead bowls.

∞ mark the position of a jack or bowl in the ditch. If the jack or a live bowl in the ditch is moved by a later bowl ensure it is repositioned

∞ not move any bowl or jack from the head until players agree the number of shots scored.

∞ measure any disputed shot if asked. If the player is not satisfied

satisfied with the decision call an umpire or if no umpire is present, ask a competent neutral person to adjudicate.

∞ record the score at each end on the scorecard and advise the players of the running score. Change the scoreboard if used every second end.

∞ at the conclusion of the game ensure that players sign the card and record the time the game is completed.

In summary, before you enter a singles competition make sure you know the duties of the marker. This is especially important when representing the club in any outside singles event.
