Athlete’s Column

Seventeen year old Stuart Wight has become a world traveler before he is old enough to vote. The cyclist from Riverview NB has recently spent six weeks living in France with a family he had not even met until the day he arrived to move into their spare room. Dominique Dubois and his family have been caring for Canadian cyclists ever since Stuart’s coach Luc Arseneau (head coach of the National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada) raced for him back in the early 1970s. Luc’s been sending the cream of the crop of Atlantic cyclists to Dominique for an immersion course in true European style cycling ever

since. While cycling clubs here in the Atlantic are still figuring out what events they will be running in the upcoming season, Stuart was racing every weekend in France and learning the finer points of racing from guys who live and breathe the sport. Despite the unseasonably cold weather in France this winter Stuart says he loves the riding and racing over there. The secondary roads are much narrower in Normandy but traffic is light and drivers much more accommodating. Drivers are so polite, he says, instead of having honks and curses thrown his way he finds local folks roll down their windows to ask him if he racing this weekend in such and such a race or just to cheer or wave. Stuart was in France from February 25 to April 6. Before that he was in Tucson Arizona with the Canadian National Team spring training camp. There he got to spend ten days riding with top Canadian riders from both road and mountain bike disciplines. As the only Junior at the camp it was a great chance to learn from the older more experienced riders including NB native Catherine Pendrel. April sees Stuart back in North America but still far from home as he will spend two weeks in Bolton MA living at the home of Hot Tubes team director Toby Stanton and racing in New England’s spring classic The Tour of the Battenkill. QUESTION: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR KIDS TO BE INVOLVED IN SPORT?

Monija Spago Psychology Student, UNB

Dustin Budovitch Fredericton, NB

Sam Moore Moncton, NB

What’s On Your Mind?

“Sport can help foster a healthy self image, develop critical leadership skills, as well as instil the importance of team work, and obviously is a fun workout!”

“Kids should get involved in sports at a young age in order to realize the importance of health and fitness, as well as to learn and experience teamwork. Sport is an activity that teaches children not only how to have fun, but also how to develop motivation, focus, and goal setting skills.”

“If kids get out there and experience the world of sports not only is it a healthy and good choice but it gives them the chance to learn great leadership and meet great friends”.
