SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTIt is a very busy time at Tweed River High School at the moment for staff and students. Our teachers are working hard to provide additional assistance and programs to students. They are to be commended on providing our students with a variety of enrichment opportunities and individualised guidance each and every day. There are many activities and events planned for the rest of the term for students to engage with and work towards personal excellence.

In Term 4 we celebrate student achievement and excellence through a variety of celebratory events such as the Sports Presentation Assembly (8:45am Wednesday 11/12/19), to celebrate sporting excellence, School Presentation Day (8:45am Thursday 12/12/19) and Year Assemblies. It is fantastic to see so many students recognised for demonstrating such a vast array of talents.

Our SRC Induction Ceremony will also be held on Friday 6/12/19 at 9:20am in the SEC. We have a vibrant and enthusiastic team of young people who are demonstrating positive leadership around our school. Thank you to Ms Mainey our SRC Coordinator for your leadership and guidance of this group.

A successful Orientation Day was held on Tuesday 3/12/19. Thank you to Mrs Mackney and Mr Muller and our student leaders for this amazing opportunity to welcome Year 6 students from our Tweed Learning Community and beyond. A terrific day was had by all as the Year 6 students were able to experience a taste of high school and orientate themselves while having a lot of fun. Our student leaders demonstrated true leadership qualities in working with our new students and are to be congratulated!

After completing their training as outstanding Peer Support Leaders last week, thank you to Mrs Mackney and Ms Cowan, Year 9 have been on Camp to Nth Stradbroke Island this week. Thank you to Mr Fugar for organising this event, ably supported by Mr Betts, Mr Lennox and Mrs Monniott-Kerr. We look forward to hearing about all the learning and fun that has taken place.

After a rewarding and successful Year 10 Portfolio Program, thank you to Mrs Fricke and Mrs Mackney, a number of Year 10 students have been involved in work experience. This is a worthwhile opportunity for students to learn some new skills, explore their vocational interests and test their work readiness. Thank you to Mr Williams and Mrs Fricke for supporting Year 10 once again.

Mr Ross and Mr Mason have been working very hard with our Boys Mentoring Group. The boys have been very engaged with the program and are to be congratulated. This Friday we are trialling a Girls Group with a workshop for invited participants that will involve respect, resilience, self-defence and anti - bullying. The challenge is on girls, to see which group has more commitment and stamina! Thank you Mr Ross and Mr Mason for continuing to support our young people.

I had the pleasure of attending the Police Intercept Program Graduation held at Seagulls last week. Congratulations to Natalie McGovern, Casey Sherwin, Shay Lund and Jakob Richardson for engaging so positively with this program. It was very pleasing to hear Superintendent Ropwell and Senior Constable Harrison speak so highly of these students. Thank you to Ms Cupitt for supporting this program.

Tweed River High School focuses on the core values and expectations of Teamwork, Opportunity, Respect, Excellence and Safety. The majority of our students really exhibit these values in their everyday lives and are a credit to their families, the school and the wider community. We thank you for your ongoing support of the school, its programs and initiatives.

Wishing all a productive and enjoyable end to the year!

Mrs Kim Taylor - Deputy Principal

GREEN TEAM CLEAN UP! On Thursday 21st of November, two Science teachers (Mr Betts and Mr Wood) accompanied Mrs Monniot-Kerr (our Teacher Librarian and Green Team leader) and 24 students to the stormwater drain that runs along Kirkwood Road. The area was full of rubbish, mostly illegally dumped, so our team worked for most of the school day pulling out rubbish, sorting, surveying and bagging it ready for pick-up . There was a real buzz in the group, students were proud of their achievements and a few local people congratulated us on our good work.

As teachers, we were amazed by the resilience and energy of our students, who had such big grins on their faces all day.

In the end, we all agreed that there was more work to do and talked about planning another day to continue the clean-up along Minjungbal Drive.

We would like to thank the Tweed Shire Council for their on-going support and particularly Mayor Katie Milne for her caring and encouraging words. Mrs Monniot-Kerr, Teacher Librarian

YEAR 8 EXCURSION TO FINGAL HEADLANDSOn Friday 29 November, Year 8 attended a Cross-Curriculum Excursion to Fingal. Pictures here show Mrs Ryan speaking about the cultural significance of The Giant's Causeway at Fingal and the Aboriginal creation stories about the area.

She also told students about Captain Cook naming places in the area and what became of caves that were in the area, including their uses over time.

Mr Harris and Mrs Ryan spoke about the geological formation of the rocks and students were taken in small groups to view the causeway.

Ms Cowan involved students in Aboriginal games such as Emu hunt and Mr Wolf. Mrs Green, HSIE

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCEYear 10 Work Experience has kicked off with many year 10 students making the most of their opportunities to join in activities at a number of different host employers within the local area.

Some of our students have been fortunate enough to access the state of the art facilities at Southern Cross University, while other are enjoying engaging with younger learners in different schools.

Work Experience is a fantastic opportunity for students to try out a job they are considering aiming for in the future, to gain an understanding of working life and to network for part time and casual positions at this busy time of year!

Compulsory School Attendance

Information for parents

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

What are my legal responsibilities?

Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards for homeschooling.

Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.

The importance of arriving on time

Arriving at school and class on time:

• Ensures that students do not miss

out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day

• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine

• Give students time to greet their friends before class

• Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.

What if my child has to be away from school?

On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

• being sick, or having an

infectious disease • having an unavoidable medical

appointment • being required to attend a

recognised religious holiday • exceptional or urgent family

circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)

Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.

Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens the principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why.

Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified.

Travel

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

In some circumstances students may be eligible to enrol in distance education for travel periods over 50 school days. This should be discussed with your child’s school principal.

Alcohol and Young People Trends relating to young people and alcohol are improving. Specifically, there has been an increase in the age at which young people first try alcohol, from an average of 14.8 years in 1995 to 16.1 years in 20161. Also, fewer people aged 12–17 are drinking alcohol and the proportion abstaining from alcohol increased significantly between 2013 and 2016 (from 72% to 82%). However, whilst more young people aged between 12 to 17 years of age are abstaining from alcohol than in previous years, in 2016 almost four and a half million people in Australia aged 14 or older (22%) reported being a victim of an alcohol related incident.2 Current research suggests the brain is not fully developed until about 25 years of age. Binge drinking alcohol before this age can result in permanent brain damage3, affecting memory, learning, decision making and problem solving. For more information on the effect of alcohol on the developing brain, http://darta.net.au/factsheets/ Recognising the serious impact of alcohol on young people, NSW Office of Liquor and Gaming have changed the laws regarding supply of alcohol to young people. Under Section 117 of the New South Wales Liquor Act 2007 it is illegal to supply alcohol to people aged under 18 years in a private home unless it is supplied by: the child’s parent or guardian, or an adult who has the approval of the child’s parent or guardian. A person convicted of secondary supply in NSW can be fined up to $11 000 for each underage drinker involved.  Mental health Drinking at a young age increases the risk of mental health problems. Young Drivers aged 17-25 years. Why are they at risk?

Facts: 1. Road crashes are one of the leading causes of injury, disability and death among young people. 2. Young drivers and their passengers are over-represented in road crashes compared to other age groups -especially young males. 3. Drivers in rural areas experience a higher rate of fatalities than those from urban areas. 4. Speeding is the major cause of road crashes in NSW and crashes which involve speeding are more likely to result in fatal crashes. 5. Other high-risk behaviours that significantly contribute to road crashes and injuries include:

• Drink driving • Driver fatigue

Driver distraction, especially mobile phones • Not using seat belts

Driver inexperience: Often young drivers don’t realise that it takes time and lots of practice to develop safe driving skills. Developing brain: Parts of the brain responsible for self-control and for recognising and managing hazards do not fully mature until after the teenage years, so young drivers are more likely to experiment and take dangerous risks. Overconfidence and risk taking: Young drivers can be over confident about their driving ability and underestimate dangers on the road. Mobile phones: Driving is complex. Anything that takes your mind or eyes off the road, or hands off the wheel, not only compromises your safety, but also puts other people at risk. Being distracted increases your chances of being in a crash, and impedes your attention to traffic lights, stop signs, pedestrians and cyclists. Know the conditions for your licence and laws regarding mobile phone use. For more information see: http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/mobilephones Having friends as passengers: Young drivers may be distracted by passengers or may feel pressured to take risks, such as speeding. Every extra peer passenger carried by a young driver increases the chance of crashing. Alcohol and other drugs: Young people often do not understand that alcohol and other drugs affect a driver’s skills, mood and most importantly behaviour. Safe driving requires clear judgement, concentration and ability to react to what’s happening on the road Busy lifestyles: Work, sport and study often mean busy lifestyles for young people, which may cause them to drive when tired – especially late at night. Driving tired significantly impairs driving, even if the driver doesn’t feel sleepy. For more information on risks for young drivers see; http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/campaigns/donttrustyourtiredself.html
