Year 4 Borambula

Last week year 4 students went to Borambola for a 3 day camp. The students were split into 2 groups Donkey Kong and Mario. Over the 3 days the students got to go rock climbing up a 10m wall, kayaking, archery, BMX, low ropes, initi-

atives and orienteering. On the first night the students had a games night and on the second night they had a dance party. The students all had an

AMAZING time and it was great to see all teachers and students having a go and challenging themselves. A big thank you to Mrs Henman, Miss Davy and

Mrs Pople for taking the students and Mrs Jenkyn for organising the excursion.

How can I help my child improve their writing?

Writing, like all aspects of your child’s learning, requires lots of practise. It is important to read their writing or ask them to read it to you and it is especially important that you find one positive aspect to comment on. For example, “I really like the way you’ve described this …..”. Some simple activities you can do with your child include:

Read and talk about the writing that your child brings home from school.

Praise your child for using neat and legible handwriting.

Play games such as I Spy, Scrabble, Boggle, Scattegories and Crossword Puzzles to help build vocabulary and spelling skills.

Draw a picture or ask your child to, then get them to label it. For example, a butterfly picture could be labelled with wings, antennae, thorax, proboscis, legs, etc.

Make a photo album or scrapbook with your child and have them write captions for each of the photos.

Write notes to your child and encourage them to respond in writing.

Ask your child to help with day to day writing activities such as preparing a shopping list.

These are just a few ways you can help improve your child’s writing. For more ideas please see your child’s class teacher and have fun with writing!

2014 KPS Premier’s Spelling Bee

We recently held the 2014 KPS Spelling Bee at school to select our school representatives for the Regional Finals. It saw four representatives from each class compete in two tense sessions (Junior Years 4-5 & Senior Years 5-6) of oral spelling. Competition was fierce and numerous difficult words were correctly spelt throughout the two sessions. From the School Final we selected 4 students (2 in the 3/4 and 2 in the 5/6 section) to represent the school at the next stage of the competition.

3/4 Finalists

1 Lindsay Mayfield 2 Thomas Casnave

5/6 Finalists 1 Amy Martin 2 Rex Mather

What are the competition procedures? At each final, there is a demonstration round using simple words to help familiarise contestants with the competition format. No one is eliminated in this round. This is followed by elimination rounds of increasing difficulty. The announcer reads the word, then a sentence including the word, and then repeats the word again. Each contestant must repeat the word to the satisfaction of the announcer before they spell, and then say the word again to indicate they have finished spelling. Up until this point, contestants may self-correct if they clearly indicate that they are starting again. Students have 45 seconds in which to spell the word. A warning bell is rung at 30 seconds with two bells at 45 seconds to indicate the contest-ant's time has expired. Contestants may ask the announcer to repeat the word – this is included in their 45 second time limit. Any self-corrections must also be made within the time limit. At the second bell, any incomplete spelling will be taken

The next SRC fundraiser is

coming…

On Friday 19th September the SRC will be holding their next fundraiser in support of the Children’s Ward at the Wagga Base Hospital. Students have decided to hold a pyjama day as part of the fundraising effort.

All students wishing to support this worthy cause are requested to wear their best pyjamas or onesie to school and bring a $2 donation. Students that make a donation will also be able to go to the hall to watch a movie and enjoy a bag of popcorn and lollies.

as the contestant's final answer. When a student has finished spelling a word, the announcer will either state 'That is correct' or 'That is incorrect. The correct spelling is…' How is a winner determined? At the school, regional and state finals, the elimination process continues round by round. To win the competition a contestant must spell more words correctly than all the other contestants. A contestant will only be eliminated if at least one other contestant in the same round spells their word correctly. If all contestants in a particular round misspell their words then no one is eliminated. Congratulations to all of the School Finalist and Good Luck to our Regional Finalists for the Next Round of the competition. Mr Fletcher Spelling Bee Coordinator

Kooringal On Show Dear Parents

Kooringal On Show is nearly here and students are getting very excited to show you the performances they have been so busy preparing. We would greatly appreciate it if audience members would stay for the entire performance of all groups. We have made arrangements to make this more feasible for parents who have children in both performances. During the primary performance there will be a board game room in the library so that lower primary students who have finished their performance and are waiting for their primary siblings to perform, can play. If you would like to send your lower primary child to this room we request that you send a packed meal / sandwich for your child. Please also note that students will return to their classrooms after their performance and they can be picked up upon the conclusion of either the Lower Primary at 6:30pm or Primary concert, at 8:15pm. We look forward to showcasing all the students hard work. Thank you,

S.Henman S.Davidson Relieving Assistant Principal Principal

P&C NEWS

Fathers Day Stall – THANK YOU ! A special thanks to all the parents, carers and P&C members who helped with compiling student lists, purchasing gifts, sorting gifts and supplying the gifts to the children at the school stall.
