Band Notes Dear Concert Band Members and Parents, This Thursday night The Kooringal Public School Concert Band will be hosting the Band Recruitment Night for prospective 2016 band students. I know that Mr. Walton has already discussed the importance of this event and has asked that the Concert Band members to make themselves available for a performance on the night; however, I would also like to ask for your assistance for the evening. The evening will begin at 6pm with a performance from the Concert Band. This will be followed by a session where our prospective band members can try the different instruments which may appeal to them. Mr. Walton will be approaching different students to help assist in these sessions. I will inform parents of those students as soon as possible. For students helping out with instruments, we will be finished by 7:30pm. Once the performance is finished (around 6:20pm), those not involved with helping out with instruments, may head home. As a member of the Concert Band you have been outstanding ambassadors for our school and I would like to thank you for your participation at Thursday evening’s event.

Tim Harris, In-school Band Coordinator

Remembrance Day This year, 11th November 2015 marked the 97th anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War (1914–18). The staff and students at Kooringal Public observed a minutes silence at 11am, on the 11th of November, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Prior to them stopping and reflecting upon the significance of Remembrance Day, children made and wore poppies. Classes gathered information from a variety of sources and discovered many interesting facts about this historic occasion. The attached photo was taken in our KPS Peace Garden, in front of a Lone Pine. This garden was established in 1990, by a previous member of staff, (Mrs Deidre Tome) and the SRC. The garden consists of a Lone Pine, an olive tree and rosemary hedges. The Lone Pine is a descendant of the original and grown from a seed of the cone brought back to Australia. The olive tree is synonymous with peace and the rosemary was planted as hedges on the diagonal

drawing focus to the flagpole. The SRC, at the time, also planted natives along the guard rail of the back playground. Each of those represented a campaign in which our service personnel fought. Next time you’re in our back playground, please feel free to, stop, look and reflect.
