Transition will occur from Monday 4th December to Friday 8th December in week 8. During the transition days students will be involved in 2018 curriculum activities and will receive their stationary packs and information regarding classroom requirements for 2018. Next Tuesday the Year 5/6 students with Miss Schmidt, Bob Arthur and the ever reliable Trish will be visiting Victor Harbor for their aquatics camp. While on camp the students will be involved in a range of aquatic activities that will include body boarding, surfing, kayaking and snorkelling. Three-Way Learning Conferences (3WLCs)

Thank you to the students and parents for their efforts and attendance at the 3WLCs held last Tuesday evening. We enjoyed this experience and found it very beneficial in getting to know and understand the students more. The students worked diligently to present their ideas and we were encouraged by their openness and honesty. For us, the goals of the conferences exceeded our expectations.

Thank you to the parents who provided us with feedback. This was also beneficial and in our review of the process, this information will be carefully considered.

In the next week, the minutes of the meetings will be sent home. Some minutes will be brief – some teachers felt it

was more important to listen and engage with the students rather than write minutes! This is understandable, and

is an aspect we will look at in the future.

Reception class

We planted vegetables and some flowers in the Primary garden this year. The snow peas had a really good crop! These went home to the families – as did the lettuce. We picked the beetroot and will make a chocolate cake with some, as well as a risotto. The flowers we planted are giving the area a really great burst of colour. Snap dragons are fun to make talk.

Connor Hogan’s Overseas Motorcycle Trial News On the 25-26 September Connor Hogan competed in the Trial des Nations in Baiona, Spain. The Trial des Nations event is an international motorcycle trial teams event. 17 year old Connor was part of a 3 man Australian team alongside Australia #1 Kyle Middleton, 27 (NSW) and #2 Chris Bayles, 28 (Tas). It is a difficult event to organise from Australia. All the riders are required to buy their own bikes that are collected new from the motorcycle factories in Spain before the event. All three riders compete on Gas motorcycles that are made in Girona, Spain. After the event the bikes are shipped back to Australia.

The competition day involved 2 laps of 15 sections over a short 1.5km course in a very scenic setting. Baiona is on the Spanish west coast just north of the Portuguese border. The trial was held on the shoreline rocks with the Atlantic as a backdrop, all under the imposing walls of an historic Castle. The Trial des Nations has been run for many years. Australia has had several thirds and a couple of Seconds in the past, but never a win. Last year Australia finished 5th, but in 2017 the Australian team won the international class defeating 13 other countries, most notably the USA who came in 2nd. Obviously, Connor, Kyle & Chris were ecstatic to be the first Australian team to win a TdN event and earn themselves an FIM gold medal.

The very next weekend was the Australian Trials Championship held near Mengler’s Hill in the Barossa. A fantastic venue and great weather saw a good turnout of both competitors and spectators. Connor rode very well and with a good mindset the whole weekend. He admits to being a little inconsistent with 7 failures, or “fives”, that hampered his scorecard over a total of 90 sections. Connor finished in 5th place in the Australia Trials Championship which he was very happy with at only his second attempt in Open Solo. At 17 he was the youngest competitor in the Open Solo class.

On Tuesday, Oct 10, Robbie Robinson, drove a busload of members of Booleroo Men’s Shed out to the Hogan property to watch a demonstration of motorcycle trials riding. Connor and Ethan rode their Gas Gas trials motorcycles over a short “section” consisting of placed logs and various obstacles including a trailer and a truck. Connor amazed the assembled audience by conquering these hazards with ease whilst Ethan impressed with his technique and precision over a smaller course.

On Friday morning, Oct 13, Connor was invited to the Sports SA breakfast at the Sage Hotel in Adelaide. The guest speaker at this function was women’s basketball champion, and Adelaide Lightning captain, Abby Bishop. Connor was announced as one of three finalists in the Country Athlete of the Year category. The winner will be announced at a Gala Dinner at Adelaide Oval function on November 24th.

Year 12 Food and Hospitality High Tea

On Friday Week 1 the Year 12 Food and Hospitality Class held a High Tea in the Library for 30 invited guests - parents, family, aunts, bosses, neighbours of the students and some lucky staff. As this was a Group Task the students collaborated effectively with the planning, preparing, presenting and serving of the High Tea. The Library looked elegant with flowers, table decorations and even beautiful China tea cups that were kindly lent for the occasion by Lily’s grandmother Sylvia Smith. A wide range of finger foods, both savoury and sweet were prepared and enjoyed by the guests with very positive feedback received.

The afternoon was a pleasant way for the girls to show off their practical skills to friends and family and finish the practical component for Food and Hospitality.

Thankyou to staff –Kathy Kupke, Gayle Bury and Rob Sanders - who assisted with cleaning up afterwards. It was much appreciated by the students.

The school is currently getting sample sizes sent, so families can try on, pay and order these in the near future for delivery in early 2018.

Uniforms will no longer be available online through Sportscentre and the new supplier is JS Sports. Uniforms can be purchased on Qkr and will be available to be purchased directly from the school. In the future there will be one set day in which uniforms can be purchased and tried on via the finance office.

Keep an eye out for details about the new uniforms advertised in future newsletters.

Community Members needed for Roundtable Panels

I would like to thank the parents who have expressed interest in being 2017 Roundtable panellists. We are currently in the process of developing a timetable to accommodate various parents’ availability on the day and will publish the timetable in coming weeks in the newsletter. We are still in the search for parents willing to participate as panellists and any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to know more about the Roundtable sessions or how you can become a Roundtable assessment panellist please read the following information or contact teacher Anthony Edgcumbe at Booleroo Centre District School on (08) 8667 2124.

For several years, we have run a Roundtable method of Assessment for Year 9 students at our school. We have been very pleased with the outcomes for Year 9 students in their final year of Middle School. The students’ learning is assessed by a panel consisting of a mentor, teacher, community member and peer.

We are asking parents and community members to consider assisting us on Friday, November 15th on a panel. There is minimal preparation for the panel and each will run in blocks of about 1½ hours. You will be given assistance in preparation for the day.

In past years panel members have found the experience interesting and enjoyed seeing what the students had been achieving in their classes.

Please complete the tear-off slip below if you can attend one or more of the panel sessions and return to the Front Office. We will contact you to arrange a suitable panel time. Thank you – we appreciate your time and support of the learning programmes in the school.

Errappa Camp 2017

On Wednesday the 25th of October the year 7’s from Booleroo Centre, Wilmington and Wirrabara went to the Errappa Blue Light camp in Iron Knob; the trip took 2 and a half hours on the bus. For the first lunch we had pizza before going to do a number of team building exercises and an egg challenge in which four groups made cradles so the egg wouldn’t break. The only survivor was the cradle made by Bryce, Teegan, Alec, Raymond and Imogen. Unfortunately, their egg broke when taken to a new height. We later had lasagne and then went outside and played until dark.

Thursday began with breakfast and a room inspection to make sure all bags were zipped up and no clothes were left on the floor. This was followed by an orienteering course, which had four groups of students running around the town in search of letters to solve the clue. The winning team contained: Alec, Jed, Britt and Taylah. We then had a short break, followed by a lesson on how to use harnesses and how to stay safe on the high ropes. After lunch the students went outside to the high ropes. A few students were hesitant to participate in the activities as they were afraid of heights, but everyone was convinced to have a go because trying and failing is better than never trying and not knowing if you could have succeeded. Teegan, Imogen, Josh and Jed were successful in all activities. Later that night after tea we played a great game of laser tag; the red team was triumphant!

Wednesday began with breakfast and a little bit of free time before we began the day’s activities. Once the students strapped on their harnesses they made their way to the Leap of Faith and the rock climbing wall. Everyone tried at least one of the activities although some people like Josh, Teegan, Imogen and Jed succeeded in both things. Almost everyone tried the Leap of Faith. Most succeeded, but some people failed to catch with both hands. After one more turn on the flying fox we packed up and left. For lunch we stopped in Port Augusta at McDonalds and KFC. We eventually arrived at Booleroo Centre at around 2:30 pm. Overall the students had a great time, made new friends and those from Wilmington and Wirrabara saw firsthand what their Year 8 class looks like for 2018.

Many thanks go to the students for their exemplary behaviour and to Grace Hollitt for her efforts and guidance on the camp.

JOBEX – FREE career event in PORT AUGUSTA - Year 10-12 students are invited to join a BCDS school group attending JOBEX. A letter of invitation has been provided to students.

You may be aware that there will be a JOBEX (Job Expo) held in Port Augusta on 20th November, 2017. This looks to be a fantastic opportunity for students to explore possible career pathway options for Year 10-12 students. The expo will feature some of the State’s leading businesses spanning the five growing sectors of Energy and Mining, Defence and Shipbuilding, Health and Research, IT and Hi-tech and Tourism, Food and Wine. To check the options, visit the JOBEX website, https://jobex.sa.gov.au/port-augusta . There will also be an Education Hub where students can meet with representatives from tertiary institutions including universities and TAFE. They will be available to guide students through how they can prepare for a job in one of these growth sectors. A Recruitment Zone will provide practical sessions from recruitment specialists who will be on hand to give tips on customising student CVs and performing well at a job interview. There will be a bus service from Booleroo Centre District School. Students may be picked up from Melrose and Wilmington with a written request. It is anticipated we will be back at school ready for students to catch the buses home. Places for this bus service are limited to 20. The first 20 students who return the tear-off slip, and subsequent excursion consent forms will be eligible to attend. Unfortunately, those who do not return their paperwork will miss out on the bus, but can still attend the event with parent supervision. There is no cost for this event.
