SHINE RECRUITS INAUGURAL BATCH OF SHINE AMBASSADORS

| AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2015 |

In late August 2015, the SHINE Award Centre piloted its SHINE Ambassador Programme with 60 SHINE students to introduce and grow a high-quality SHINE Support platform as one key sup-port channel in the SHINE Award Programme. The value of having student role models who are ex-perts on the SHINE Award Programme and offer leadership to their peers cannot be understated.

The SHINE Ambassadors have two key roles to play – the 1st key role is that they must be bold enough to authentically share their experiences to others and inspire them to follow in their footsteps so that new SHINE students will also begin their own transformative SHINE Learning Journey. Opportunities to share with new SHINE students on what the SHINE Award Programme is and how to get the most out of their SHINE Learn-ing Journey are usually through public sessions called Ready2SHINE sessions which normally happen around the main intakes of January, March and August annually. Secondly, the SHINE Ambassadors will be a part of our Advocacy programme, particularly on social media to support SHINE and enhance its online image.

Page 4: NEWSLETTER - Taylor's University · Exploring the language of your mind reveals the real impact of human communication using cer-tain gestures, especially with words. In this half-day

It is envisioned that the SHINE Ambassador Programme will go a long way to grow our SHINE Ambassador platform as our SHINE student leaders will have many opportunities to share their experience and valuable insights about their SHINE Learning Journey to current and potential SHINE students. The benefits are manifold – not only do the SHINE Ambassadors get to move out of their comfort zone as they reach out to fresh SHINE students, they get to also stretch their capabilities and widen their student network. The SHINE team plans to leverage on the SHINEAmbassadors to L.I.V.E (Lead, Inspire, Value and Excite their peers). They work to motivate otherstudents not to be afraid to take on experiences that are transformative by guiding, leading and

inspiring others to explore new possibilities and push past pre-conceived personal boundaries by encouraging others to join events and taking up challenging roles in student projects or organisations within and beyond campus.

Another key challenge is for the SHINE Ambassadors to help the SHINE Award Centre to create brand awareness through online advocacy. The SHINE Ambassadors will be instrumental in helping the SHINE team in a pilot campaign to ramp up its online presence in 2016 through the usual social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It is undeniable that it will take a potent cocktail of online ads, so-cial media, email marketing, and television advertisements to help the SHINE brand grow from strength to strength in 2016 and create the brand awareness and presence among Taylor’s students and the public.

Taking the first steps and selecting SHINE Ambassadors

The first steps were not without challenges. The SHINE Award Team did their research and screening process to recruit the SHINE Ambassadors. This involved a thorough screening of their involvement and commitment as SHINE students. After an application review and background check, the briefing and training session began. Upon signing of the SHINE Ambassador contracts, our SHINE students officially became SHINE Ambassadors and start-ed their mission of getting other students excited about the SHINE Learning Journey by sharing their own.

Page 5: NEWSLETTER - Taylor's University · Exploring the language of your mind reveals the real impact of human communication using cer-tain gestures, especially with words. In this half-day

The SHINE Ambassadors assumed their first responsibility by assisting the registration process of the August 2015 SHINE intake as well the Ready2 SHINE sessions. They also formed a team to man-age events and share some of their own adventures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

SHINE Advocacy Ambassador and SHINE Ambassador?

Advocacy is part and parcel of a SHINE Ambassador role as it not only helps our SHINE Award Programme to have a wider reach, but also inspire students to engage more and makes them feel more satisfied with their own SHINE Learn-ing Journey.

In a recent study, researchers found that students who are engaged in their brand socially are more likely to stay on campus. Also, 20% are more likely to feel inspired and 15% would feel more connected to other students beyond their core teams. What is even better is to hear that 27 % are more likely to feel optimistic about their future. With the launch of the SHINE Ambassadors platform, we hope to grow a new generation of leaders who are em-powered to achieve their vision of maximising the potential of the SHINE participants and guiding them to opportunities that will make them SHINE!

Personal growth matters towards fulfilling our destiny because if we understand our personal strengths and weaknesses, we can easily progress. “Mastering Your Destiny” was specially designed and conducted for academics to enhance their personal development and identities, as well as, their leadership skills in order to create results that make them feel empowered.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Roy Tan who is spe-cialized in training teambuilding, leadership, problem solving and decision making skills, planning and various personal development related topics. With more than 4 years of experience in training, Roy led participants to identify their inner self and explore a way to achieve their destiny.

This systematic and structured workshop consists of 5 key modules for participants to build the concept of achieving their destiny. After knowing their inner self such as identity, participants were encouraged to identify their motivation which drives them to the desti-ny. Participants were then led to recognize their desti-ny before understanding the power of momentum. The final module enriched participants understanding by translating concepts to actual practices which lead to success.

This two day session involves recognising and managing conflict in daily life. This is an essential part of building emotional intelligence and nurturing relationships. Poorly handled conflict can affect both the employees and the clients thereby impacting the company’s bottom line. 28 academics participated in this training where they were exposed to maintaining competitive advantage in order to focus on developing conflict resolution strategies to quickly and effectively resolve conflict, while building trust and commitment with clients and colleagues.

This session also provided techniques for individuals in an organization to resolve workplace conflict and build a common understanding and framework for working through challenging conflict situations. The trainer, Hetal Doshi Suhana Daswani, has vast expe-rience in organisational psychology and has also ob-tained her International Coaching Federation (ICF) accredited coaching certification. Hetal’s core lies in emotional intelligence and she seeks to identify and maximise potential of all individuals within the work-place through gaining a deep appreciation of their personality, abilities, motivations, strengths and chal-lenges. In this half-day workshop, participants were exposed to me-ta-model skills. The trainer, Loshini Logonnathan, helped participants identify and resolve the con-cepts of deletion, distortion and generalization without the influence of personal filters such as language, memories, culture, values and attitudes.

The half-day session was an exciting session where academics were provided opportunities to explore the language of the mind and how powerful it is. They were also able to perceive that although hu-man beings speak the same language, the tenden-cy to understand its meaning may be lower due to the natural constraints. Ms. Loshini Logonnathan is a certified Neuro-linguistic practitioner® who has been certified by Dr. Richard Bandler, the founder of NLP.

MOTIVATION AND ENGAGEMENT SKILLS PROGRAMME

| DR. SASHEEDRAN RAMAN | 13 – 14 AUGUST 2015|

Motivating and engaging students in learning can be said to be one of the major challenges lecturers often encounter. For this reason, TED was pleased to invite Dr. Sasheedran Raman, to conduct a workshop on Motivation and Engagement Skills. Dr. Sasheedran is a former head of marketing in a leading multi-nation-al company, and has led 20 branch heads and 100 sales people to achieve RM30 million in annual sales, thanks to his highly effective motivation and engagement techniques. He has previously conducted workshops internationally, including in Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Indonesia. During his workshop, Dr. Sasheedran led participants into developing a personalized set of teaching methods towards an action plan of engagement strategies. This was aimed at helping academics build a positive learning environment and dynamic individ-ual students. Through many interactive role plays, participants explored real motivation scenarios and case simulations, and learnt to identify, manage and negotiate student behaviours for best motivational outcomes. Participants also learnt to engage students in different class formats, such as questioning, lecturing and facilitating.

The academics were able to experience a very useful workshop which directly related to their day-to-day life. This is evident in the evaluation where the majority of the participants rated Dr. Sasheedran’s work-shop as “Excellent” and commented that the workshop was actively engaging and that he was able to convey the learning points clearly and was very knowledgeable in the subject matter. Almost all participants mentioned they would be able to apply what they learned in their work and personal life.

SHINE DISCOVERY SESSION (SDS)

| JULY - SEPTEMBER 2015 |

Upon arrival at Batang Kali, the program starts off with a Self-Discovery process through personality profiling and analysis, values elicitation and some experiential activities aimed at self-discovery. The 2nd day is a jungle adventure aimed at pushing students out of their comfort zone to understand mental and physical boundaries and how it limits learning and experiences. The most important process of the SDS is when students move into self-development by crafting their own Personal Development Plan that will be their guide for the next 3-5 years in Taylor’s and beyond.

The SHINE Discovery Session held from the 18th to 20th of September was the first batch accommodating 120 students at Selesa Hill Homes in Pahang. This was our first attempt at running the interactive and engaging SDS for a large group. By conducting the sessions in groups of 60 students at different locations within Selesa Hill Homes, we were able to garner the same amount of engagement and interaction with students, achievement of learning outcomes and overall student satisfaction ratings. This was achieved by having 6 student ambassador helpers and 6 staff from Taylor’s, 2 main trainers, 2 assistant trainers and 2 administration assistants.

In 2016, we will see nearly all of the 17 planned SDS batches run in groups of 120 students as SHINE grows to 2000 participants in 2016.

From the month of July till September 2015, the SHINE Award Centre in collaboration with the Life Skills De-velopment department of INTELLECT, organized a total of 4 SHINE Discovery Sessions (SDS) for 263 SHINE participants. The number of sessions was relatively lower due to the exam season and the mid-semester breaks that most student were occupied with. The first 3 sessions from July were held at our regular SDS venue in Ontok-Ontok at Batang Kali, in the serene surroundings of natural flora and fauna. Prior to attending the SDS, students would have already assessed themselves online in the SHINE Portal in terms of their skills and abilities possessed through the Taylor’s Skills Audit Tool (TSAT). This tool accesses students in terms of where they stand in their possessed skill sets against the 8 Taylor’ Graduate Capabilities (TGC’s).

TAYLOR’S EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING SERIES : FREEDOM IN FORGIVENESS

| AMANDA LINDHOUT | 14 AUGUST 2015 |

On the 14th of August 2015, INTELLECT, organised its inaugural Taylor’s Emotional Well-Being Series, titled Freedom in Forgiveness at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. The talk was given by Ms. Amanda Lindhout who had her amazing life story to share. It was a very moving and heart-warming session that served as an eye-opener for all who attended on why forgiveness is crucial in our lives no matter how bad the circumstanc-es. Amanda’s story of survival in the face of lost hope illustrates the remarkable strength of the human spirit.

Immediately after her 1-hour sharing session, Amanda was swarmed by 430 attendees at the talk for a chance to shake her hand and take a selfie shot with her. Even until today her sharing during the session is still talked about by external guests, as well as among students and staff of Taylor’s Education Group.

Testimonials and reviews received by the SHINE Award Centre from students also reflected the impact that Amanda has made through her sharing. Here are some of them.

It is very inspiring to see someone who had gone through such misery to be here speaking to us and wanting to make a change.

I feel privileged to listen to Amanda Lindhout’s talk, and I am sure that her true account of her story and how she faced it today has already impacted someone’s life out there.

I have learnt how to forgive people around us no matter what have they did to you.

This talk did not teach me how to become a successful person, but it taught me how to be a better person.

It really served as a reminder to be compassionate and forgiving towards anyone I meet.

Overall, the Taylor’s Emotional Well-Being Series accomplished what it aimed to achieve: to provide all students, staff and guests an opportu-nity to experience the education of the heart.

This successful even was made possible through the excellent teamwork and co-operation of many individuals from different departments and divisions of the Taylor’s Education family.

30-HOUR FAMINE D.I.Y. CAMP

| 1 - 2 AUGUST 2015 |

The annual 30-Hour Famine, initiated by World Vision, is no stranger to Taylorians. This year, Taylor’s University Chinese Society organized and hosted the overnight event on August 1 – 2, 2015 at Taylor’s Grand Hall to raise awareness on the global hunger crisis caused by poverty, and particularly, its impact on children around the world. Although the main focus of the camp was to observe a 30-hour communal fast in order to give par-ticipants a firsthand experience of hunger, there were also various games and activities held around campus all through the camp to allow campers to get to know each other and to understand how they could help alleviate the problem of world hunger.

With more than 400 participants—including students from various schools, colleges, and universities, and also young working adults—and 87 committee members and volunteers, the number of attendees for the event ex-ceeded the expectations of the organizers.

On the morning of August 2, the participants joined other campers from all around the Klang Valley for the clos-ing ceremony that was held at the Kelana Jaya, and the group broke their 30-hour fast with some light snack.

SHARING SESSION BIJI-BIJI BY MAD.TU

| 28 AUGUST 2015 |

The Biji-Biji Sharing initiated by MAD.TU was organised to promote social entrepreneurships and education on the viability and benefits of up-cycling; a process of re-using old material and objects and making them into new, unique products.

The event itself was fun filled and conversational. Everyone was invited to share their opinions on sustainable products for a better future while bringing the Taylor’s community closer together.

After the talk, the representatives engaged the room to bring out their old t-shirts to be transformed into handbags. Hands-on example of what up-cycling was and what participants could do about it was presented. The activity tested the participants’ craft skills, with much cutting, tying and finesse needed to produce a single handbag. Participants were then invited to show off their new creations one at a time, some surprising bags turned up which we cut comically too large for even the designer. Others were astoundingly well-made and could have fooled the untrained eye.

Hope drives us to strive for the impossible. Our future lies ahead and we hope good things come our way to further enrich our lives. Regardless of circumstances, we must never lose hope, we must stay future ori-entated in our thinking. To endure the present, we must see ourselves in the future. Endurance with a plan is not passive as it involves the active process of thinking, dreaming and hoping for a better tomorrow, for when hope is lost, future is therefore lost. This is the overall essence of the recently held Future & Hope English Forum organized by Taylor’s University Buddhist Club in collaboration with BLIA Malaysia Chap-ter.
