We had a great response from the members last year who submitted their favorite recipes for Chef John to make an offer on the menu. Chef John cooked exclusively member recipes for Auction Night and they got Rave Reviews. Why mess with success? We are again asking members to send us recipes for the dishes that they are “known” for, and that they get frequent requests from family and friends. (Shh…. We’ll keep your secret ingredients hush-hush, and do our very best to make it taste as great as you do.) Recipes can be emailed to Chef John care of [email protected] or sent via regular mail.

Over the past year we have added several new tools for improved communication, which include weekly emails of current events or specials at the club, Facebook postings, an enhanced website, and, as we shared in the statements mailed this month, online access to your DLYC account. We have two more options to add to the list –an Electronic Newsletter, and Electronic Statements. We can send you an electronic copy of the DLYC Newsletter, which means you can receive it as soon as it is available, and not have to worry about mail services. We can also begin sending you a monthly electronic Statement of Account, either in place of the hard copy mailed version, or instead of the mailed version. Again, this will allow you to receive your information immediately, without having to worry about mail processing. If you have an interest in any of the services mentioned above, either contact Irma at [email protected], or send a note to the office indicating what you would like to participate in. Make sure to include your correct email address if you are not currently receiving emails from us.

Save the Date: 2012 DLYC Auction night is Saturday, August 18th.

We already have two items that are being offered for silent bid right now, so that members can have a chance to plan ahead. Doug & Kathy Haskell are offering the first of two trips to Put-N-Bay on their fabulous boat! See the center insert for details. Rick Evans is donating a PETSTOP PET FENCE SYSTEM for early bidding so that members can have time to learn about this gentle and effective way of keeping their pets safe! Details are also on the center insert, do don’t miss reading about both of these awesome donations.

We want to provide a variety of items at an array of price points for our members coming to the auction. Great ideas for donations include: Spring cleaning (Donate a gently used item to the sale), Re-gift an item that you received but can’t use or doesn’t fit your style. Offer a service, like a manicure, handy man, oil change, and the like from your business or hobby. Consider a cash donation so that the committee can purchase items from their wish list.

New this Year: We are seeking table sponsors, for example, someone to sponsor items for the children’s table. The sponsor will be acknowledged in the newsletter, the Auction program and at the table itself. More details to come, but if you think you might be interested, talk to a committee member.

Consider a larger donation for the Live Auction as a means of promoting your business!

Gas cards, restaurant gift certificates, gift certificates for services from area businesses, Artwork, photography, handmade items, baked goods, and jams were hot selling items last year.

The summer will fly by, so it is not too soon to put and auction donation on your future to –do-list.

We have a great Club and the most generous members helping to support it!!

Travel with MAP to ScotlandBefore the Club Scotch Tasting By Mary Alice Powell

Tasting can be both challenging and educational. Every day we taste foods from morning until the bedtime snack. Wine tasting is big on American social agendas. Last fall Devils Lake Yacht Club members stepped up to roasters of chili to taste, judge, and declare their preferences. But, Scotch? Yes, why not Scotch? With club manager Chuck McAdams being of Scotch-Irish heritage it is a given that he would find room on the already crowded club schedule for a Scotch tasting party on Thursday July 5th from 6 to 8 pm. Also on July 5th there will Chocolate Tasting along with some red wines and port that pair well with chocolate. And when you get your samples of Scotch, you may want to follow Chuck’s Scotch sipping formula. Don’t chug a lug it, for heaven’s sake. Don’t ruin it with a lot of ice cubes. Don’t ask for a lemon or lime wedge. And, of all things, don’t dilute it with more water than the amount of Scotch. Instead, take Chuck’s path to proper Scotch tasting by adding just a “tad” of water to the room temperature scotch. That’s it. The proper term is “Neat” With all the Scotch on the bar at the club, and now a tasting in the works, Chuck has a secret. He really prefers wine. In the meantime before the club event, come with me on a trip to Scotland when the destination was the Scotch whiskey trail near Inverness. Everything was in place that glorious day. The heather was in bloom. The sheep were grazing in verdant green pastures. Frequently on the narrow country road a tanker would pass. We knew it wasn’t filled with milk because the tanker names were Glenlivet, McClellen, etc. The

taxi driver we engaged to take us to the distilleries was a non-drinker and knew the way there and back to our hotel. My travel pals were the Rev. James K. Say, a priest at St. Joseph Church in Tiffin, and his sister, Mary Ellen Say, a former Ursuline nun so you know I was in very good hands for the samples distributed at five stops. Scotland’s Malt Whiskey Trail, billed as the only one in the world, is 53 miles from Inverness. Our trip to the British Isles included my heritage countries; Ireland and Wales. We began in Dublin for two days, and then flew to Glasgow, to catch a train (about 5 hours) to Inverness for the Scotch experience. Full of Scotch, a few bottles in the luggage, and happy memories we then took a train to Cardiff Wales, and from Fishguard, Wales we took a boat across the Irish sea to spend several days on the old sod and try to warm up to Guinness, which I never did. In the area called Speyside, named for the Spey River, there are 44 distilleries that produce single malt scotch whiskey. Most offer tours to tourists and some also charge. Of course many also feature large gift shops with a wide assortment of products, from glassware to sweaters with company logos. As an example, even those who can’t stand the taste of Scotch declare Glenfiddich fudge, good enough for a second piece. Visitors soon learn on distillery tours that Scotch is the “Water of Life” to Scots and that the word Whiskey comes from the Scots Gaelic usage breatha, meaning water of life. The Glenfiddich distillery is a magnificent layout of buildings that shares the beautiful landscape and the magical spring waters in the highlands with other big names in the single malt menu, including Glenlivet, Glen Grant, Balvenie, Cardow, Malveney, Glenfarcias, and mote. Water, barley, and yeast are the three ingredients in making Scotch whiskey. The difference between single malt scotch and other scotches is that

only barley, no other grains, is used in the production. It’s the water that also makes the difference, distillery spokesmen say. As an example, at Glenlivet. The water supply is from Josie’s Well, an underground well that produces a non-stop supply of water for the distillery at temperatures that remain constant all year. Malt is the word for barley that is soaked and dried to begin germination of the natural enzymes within the grain and begin the conversion of starch to sugar. It is the fermentable sugars that are necessary to produce alcohol. Farmers grow the barley used at the Scottish distilleries The next step in Scotch production is to crush the malt to expose the starch and sugar in it to a fine flour consistency that is called grist. Yeast is added after the grist is mixed with heated spring water in several steps. The production steps cover several days, until the fermented liquid, that is called wash, is declared ready to be placed in casks. The distillers I visited used wooden bourbon and sherry casks that are believed to add a distinctive flavor to the Scotch. My preference for a smoky overcast is attributed to the addition of peat in the production. To be called Scotch Whiskey, by law, the product must mature for three years, but a single malt scotch aficionados look for labels of 12 or more years maturity. The older the Scotch, the most costly it is. It is also, we Scotch sippers say, smoother. And here’s one more trivia note I learned. The portion of whiskey that evaporates is called “angel’s share.” And when you buy 12-year-old Scotch chances are you have given at least 2 per cent to the angels. Perhaps that is more than you ever wanted to know about Scotch, but hopefully it will make the club Scotch tasting more interesting and you only have to go to “Chuck’s Distillery” for the samples.
