A message from Dr Bertram

Daniel – a man of high potential and success in an alien land.

Daniel is a much studied and much admired man of God. The stories we know so well tell of his steadfast faith, unswerving commitment to God and unwavering focus on the future his God promised. Daniel was a man, who was confident his identity lay in his faith and belief that God was sovereign. While he lived in an alien, often hostile culture, he served his God and fulfilled the positions he was offered by Babylon. What preserved and sustained Daniel was his identity , his refusal to bow down to false idols and his integrity in all situations.

Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.” Daniel 6:5

Daniel thrived because he was first and foremost obedient to God. When he was at risk and his very life was under attack, he prayed.

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Daniel 6:10

The world in which he lived may have expected Daniel to do anything he could to stay in his position of power and to save his own life. However, Daniel was only focused on being the heir of the living God. So when he faces peril, he looks to-wards the new Jerusalem. He obedience and faith is winsome to us – it charms us, engages, appeals to us by its focus. Daniel 6:21-22
