LIFE 10 ENV/ES/000480
The vast quantity of natural stone products used in the construction industry generates significant amounts of slurry deposits - estimated at five million tonnes per year in Europe.
VALORISATION AND RECYCLING OF SLURRIES PRODUCED DURING MANUFACTURING STONE SECTOR TO USE AS RAW MATERIALS FOR INDUSTRIAL
APPLICATIONS

Newsletter n.2
RECYSLURRY PROJECT OVERVIEW
Main objective of RECYSLURRY project is the development of a methodology for the valorization and the recycling of slurries produced during the industrial processing of
Natural Stone products. Project is focused on resolving the main technical aspects to promote the recycling process and analyzing the economic issues for assuring the feasibility of the recycling process. Nowadays, slurries deposits are mostly deposited in poorly controlled or un-
controlled dumps causing a significant environmental impact in producer regions.Based on previous experience from research project at lab scale, several possible applications for the slurries will be considered and studied for understand the difficulties and limitations for implementing at factories level. Some uses which will be
considered are: Cement, concrete and other derived products, Ceramic and Paints.Valorisation of the slurries will be mainly achieved by means of characterization process of the products and drying process of the slurries. In this project, a pilot plan for the drying process will be performed and the resulting slurries will be used as raw materials in SME for different applications in order to show the potential uses and applicability. The final goal is the achievement, in a near future, of the recycling for natural stone slurries.
These deposits are often toxic as they contain chemicals from the exploitation processes, yet they are typically disposed of in poorly controlled or un-controlled dumps. This can lead to persistent and gradual contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water. An administrative protocol for obtaining the regulation of the dumps will be established as a goal of the project, in order to get common European policies for a sustainable management of the resources
and residues in concordance with other European initiatives.

LIFE 10 ENV/ES/000480 The activities allowed identifying possible application of valorized slurries in order to establish the possibilities of recycling for the slurries. It was possible to classify the slurries materials according to potential uses, as well as detect the main industries which are actually demanding raw materials with similar characteristics than the characteristics of the slurries. Preliminary activities has been focused on obtaining a methodology for the characterization of the slurries in order to unravel their properties.

The demonstrative character of this project will be achieved by means of an exhaustive selection of industries demanding raw materials which will be provided with valorized slurries according to the
specific requirements for their production processes.
The fabrication of new products based on the recycled slurries, includes bricks, self-mounting construction products, pre-cast products including concrete beams, joists, concrete
bricks, panels, agglomerated stone and cement industry.Tests will be done in order to compare the final characteristics of those products respect to the conventional
products. Those tests will be evaluated to indicate either the characteristics of those products make them suitable for marketing or the process should be modify / reengineered to
obtain better properties.
NEXT STEPS
Previous works have demonstrated that the slurry could be successfully transferred to other industries as raw materials after a certain treatment in the Natural Stone industries in order to make the residue suitable for recycling. This process of valorisation will provide an added value to the residues permitting the marketing of the treated slurries as a commercial raw material.
The process for drying the slurries is a required step in order to obtain valorized raw materials, which could be considered valid for secondary applications.
A pilot plan for characterizing and drying the slurries will be developed by means of technical studies and acquisition of the needed equipment.
