OUR SPACE

This Wednesday during Periods 3 & 4 (11:30- 1:10) the whole school (from P-12) will

be working on specific areas of the school in an endeavour to keep our school looking

in tip top condition.

Each year level group (P-2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10 & VCE) will have designated areas, both out in the

yard and specific class areas.

The purpose of this activity (which will hopefully happen at least once a term) is :

To keep the school looking neat and tidy

To develop a sense of ownership and pride in the school

To encourage team work and community spirit

At lunchtime the SRC will be putting on a free BBQ for the whole school to enjoy.

The “Our Space” activity fits into our curriculum in a number of ways:

At senior level students will use some of their homeroom time to plan out the activities for the session.

It fits into our Positive Education framework under the M of PERMA which refers to meaning which relates

to our effort to encourage students to get involved in community activities

It also fits into the new Victorian Curriculum civics and citizenship component of the Humanities course.

If you have some spare time during 11:30-1:10pm you are encouraged to come down and see our kids in action.

Wellbeing tip from Chan Fisher Don’t be too serious: Laugh at yourself and enjoy life.

Parents and Friends Committee—Thank you from Kate McKenzie. Sincere thanks to everyone who participated in our annual fete on Friday evening. Your support is truly appreciated. Also thank all the group leaders for co-ordinating their groups. A special thank you to all the teachers who were adventurous enough to sit on the dunking tank.

To launch our My Space school project we will be having a

Sausage Sizzle for students and staff tomorrow

Wednesday 29th March.

The canteen will be operating as normal.

Attendance: Everyday matters

School attendance is mandated for all students over six years old and up until children turn seventeen. At Rainbow P-12 College we recognise the importance of regular attendance and being on time to start school each day. Parents are required to explain absences and this can be done by sending a written note or using our skoolbag app. You may be contacted by our attendance officer Leonie Clarke if no explanation has been given.

Uniform The majority of students have been in full school uniform. After the holidays the morning will be cooler and everyone is reminded that casual hoodies are not part of our uniform. Long sleeved polo tops are available from Mallee Magic to wear under the rugby tops for senior students and blue polar fleece jackets for junior school students Reading, Reading, Reading By now all students should be into the habit of reading regularly with an adult or independently. Teachers and parents have the opportunity to project and model the importance of reading onto students. Some interesting statistics about reading are as follows: Reading less than 1 minute a day will read 80000 words a year. 4.6 minutes will read 282.000 words a year and 20 mins will read 1.8million words a year. How can they ever catch up? Our role as teachers is to provide explicit reading strategies that children require to be successful readers. As parents/carers, your job is to give them the opportunity to practice these skills at home by reading regularly.

Ballarat Swimming from Nekeisha Bastin

On Friday 24th March I went to Ballarat for swimming in the 50 metre relay. It was a really long trip. We all had to dive off the blocks and the other swimmers were really fast but our group gave it a really good try. It was really fun because we got to marshal outside and we talked about that. It doesn’t matter what we came. We were really nervous and excited at the same time. We also recorded a faster time than at Horsham. We were all really happy that we made it to Ballarat. Congratulations to Nekeisha and the rest of the Southern Mallee Cluster under 10 relay team who competed in Ballarat and achieved a PB time.

Greater Western Region Swimming Report A great day was had by all students who attended the GWR swimming carnival at Ballarat on 24 March. Jo Thomas drove and Kirsty Preston accompanied the students on the trip to Ballarat. The girls 18-20 yr relay team of Lily Klemm, Bridget McKenzie, Sophie Thomas and Rachel Staples gained a placing of third which got them a medal. Matthew Thomas came 5th in the 15 yr freestyle and Liam Preston came 5th in the 16 yr breastroke. These students put in a huge effort to get these placings as the competitors came from the whole of the Western region of Victoria. Congratulations to all the students and thank-you for the effort of the parents involved.

Mathletics Top 10

Rainbow P-12 College

As a new challenge, we will be publishing our top Mathletics students from each week right here in this newsletter. Mathletics is the online learning tool used by most students in Years P-10. Students can earn points by either mastering learning activities or by participating in Live Mathletics which pits a student against other students from all over the world to answer math questions as quickly as possible. Today, we are publishing the results from week 8. Week 8 results

As you can see, Baxter earned the most points for the week with an impressive total of 4,407! His score was cer-tainly boosted by an impressive performance in Live Mathletics. It was great to see Jasmine Somerville score the most amount of activity points for the week with a total of 3,480. Congratulations to Kane as well, who did an outstanding amount of work this week.

Leader board for the Year so far

As you can see, our current leader is Lewis Cocks who is way out in front on 17,142 points. Haylee Tumeth is next on 13,345 points. Impressively, she has scored a total of 13,280 of these points in the activity section. Congratulations to all those who are in the current Top 10.

Hands on learning

On Thursday 16th March, the Hands On Learning Group were special guests at the grand opening of the Yurunga Homestead Fence. This is because our group sanded, painted and primed over 300 pickets and dismantled the previous fence that was worn and in need of refurbishing. To kick off the celebrations, we were presented with a thankyou cake baked and decorated by Mrs. Helen Fisher that Jasmine Sommerville and Ian Norris-Burnett cut. We had a big delicious morning tea that was put on by the Yurunga Committee. President of the Yurunga Committee Mrs Jenny Solly and Hindmarsh Shire Mayor Debra Nelson spoke of the hard work and volunteer hours that ourselves, drought relief and committee members had put in to the project. Josh McDonald and Mr Ewan Christian then cut the red ribbon that was tied around the fence and in true traditional style we all said 3 big cheers before throwing our hats into the air. This is yet another community project our group has been involved in, with students learning new skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We would also like to thank Hands On Learning Australia for their generous $3000 grant that we were successful in applying for, that contributed to the purchasing of pickets and restoration of the Yurunga Homestead Fence.
