What We Do We are a non-profit, drop-in community centre for seniors located in the heart of South Granville/Fairview. Founded in 1979, the South Granville Seniors Centre has been a strong and active pillar in the Granville/Fairview community ever since. As a non-municipal, inde-pendent centre run by a non-profit organization, we are dependent on the support and generosity of community partners and members, while our small staff team and dedicated volunteers manage day-to-day operations.
Here at the Centre, we provide a variety of drop-in programs and ser-vices for 450+ seniors members and 1,500+ seniors in our community (including recreational, wellness, exercise, and food programs). The majority of these programs are facilitated and supported by senior volunteers, providing older adults with varied opportunities to contin-ue to share their skills and knowledge with other in their later years. Our centre offers a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and friendly space for seniors to meet, connect with others, and keep active.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
To our community partners and donors for their support. SGSC is funded through generous grants and private donations.
“We acknowledge the financial assistance of the Province of British Columbia”
ClemenciaClemenciaClemenciaClemencia
Dear members,
I hope you are staying cool in the midst of these heat waves. If you have any problems dealing with this hot weather, please call us or come to the Centre where it is cool and you can have coffee, tea and/or lemonade.
I would like to say a big thank you to our SUMMER STUDENTS: Kyle, Rachael and our international volunteer Antonia for doing such a great job this summer. Thank you Rachael for organizing all of the fantastic trips this summer and Antonia for assisting with the outings. Thank you Kyle for maintaining our social media channels and updating our website. We are really going to miss you! I wish all the best to the three of them in their future endeavors.
September is here and we would like to invite you to our end-of-summer potluck party on September 21st. We are going to eat, con-nect and have fun. Don’t miss it!
In September we will run wonderful, interesting and fun programs that can keep us heathier, more active and connected (please see our pro-grams on pages 10-16). Becoming active—especially as we age, helps energize our moods and manage symptoms of illness and pain, re-lieves stress and anxiety and can improve our feelings of wellbeing.

* UPCOMING PROGRAMS *
When Linda Darbey became a member of the South Granville Seniors Centre in 2004, she promptly became a volunteer as well — her first-ever volunteer experience. It wasn’t lack of interest that held her back until retirement, she explains, it was lack of consistent availability. “I’d always worked shifts,” she says, looking back on a 36-year career with B.C. Telephone that began as an opera-tor and ended in management. Having sampled volunteerism, Linda took to it with enthusiasm. A veteran member of our Board of Directors (currently serving as Secretary), she also staffs the reception desk Wednes-day mornings, helps set up and serve lunch on Thursdays, and sets up and then takes part in the Spontaneous Art group on Fridays. What she does also helps explain why she does it. “I get to use existing skills and follow up on old interests,” she says. As receptionist, she draws on workplace administrative skills (and her experience as a telephone operator!); her lunch and art-group roles allow her to indulge her love of “puttering in a kitchen” and expressing her creativity. Linda takes a moment, opens a little watercolour sketchbook she kept for years, shows some of the skil-full drawings with their clever, punning titles. “A friend first brought me here, back in 2004, and I felt comfortable right away,” she says. “Now this Centre has become fam-ily for me.”
