Commodore’s Log

Good Day Mates,

As I said at the beginning of my last log in July, “This has certainly been a hot, dry sum-

mer,” and it sure did continue that way for the rest of the summer as well! 2016 was most

assuredly very warm and very dry! Therefore, 2016 was a wonderful time to be here on

our beautiful Lake Cobbosseecontee. And, the CYC, “Your Lake Association,” has definite-

ly had a most successful year. Our spring membership drive, as you have probably heard

by now, was a definite success. As a direct result of that drive, we increased membership by

95 bringing our total to 329 families (welcome to all new members), and our favorite Satur-

day evening parties, our boat-in/drive-ins, saw increasing attendance as the season pro-

gressed. In August we had more cooperating weather and wonderful attendance at the

homes of Karen and George Burgess on Cram’s Point, John and Mary Beth Stanek on

Horseshoe Island, and Randy Gannett and Marylee Sanders off the Pond Road. In Sep-

tember we were treated (again!) to some spectacular pizza at the home of Bill and Evelyn

Kieltyka on the northwest shore (attendance greater than, would you believe, 80!), and we

had our concluding party celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Marston Cottage off the

Pond Road, hosted by Chris and Patty Marston. Many of our parties had over 50 members

in attendance! Just a marvelously successful season, indeed! Thank you to all of our 2016

hosts! Now, be sure to keep up with the available dates for 2017 on the Events page of our

website and make plans to attend a party, host, or both. Much interest to host has been ex-

pressed, (sign-up is on a first contact basis), so email me at [email protected] if

you would be willing to have us as guests next summer! And, by all means, visit the News-

letter page on our website, www.cycmaine.org, to see this and past newsletters in full color!

Enjoy the rest of your fall here in Maine or at your home residence, and remember…..share

your lake quality concerns with friends and neighbors. Ask them to join our organization

and our fight against invasive aquatic plants and phosphorus pollution. “Spread the

word!”

See you in the spring, June 24, at our first boat-in/drive-in at the Monmouth home of John

and Debbi Farrell, and have a great winter wherever you may be!

Bon Voyage,

David Dennett, CYC Commodore

We sure are going to miss Dick and Karen and

hope they come to see us next summer? Best

wishes to you both in your new adventure! Another beautiful day on the lake.

Burgess Party

We had a really good turn-out at this new location.

Another beautiful day on the lake.

Gannett-Sanders Party

We certainly have more than our share of good food at all of our

parties!

Another great day, another great party! Always nice to visit the marina!

Attendance at this party…..well over 50! What a successful summer

CYC has had.

Kieltyka Party

Just take a look at those pizzas! We broke the record for attendance at this one. Did anyone guess, “Better

than 80?”

Oh my. Speaking of pizza. You better take a

look at this one on our website color version of

the Pilot!

Marston Party

100 years old this year and looking mighty spiffy!

Members on the porch and a cottage-full inside! Our final party of

2016, another absolute success!

And here is the historic kitchen in this unique gem of a cottage.

CYC Large Burgee

Have you seen this new 3’x5’ flag style burgee (shown in the photo below hanging from the

porch of the Marston Cottage) that we offered members this summer for $70? This beautiful

nylon flag was custom sewn by Brewer Banner Designs located in New Bedford, MA. Our orig-

inal order of 25 sold out rather rapidly and the CYC executive committee recently voted to or-

der another 20, but they will not be available until late winter or early spring! Contact our

Keeper of the Stores, Diane Schrader, at 207-622-1752 if you would like to order one. As with

all of our merchandise, we make a very limited profit and hope that you will take advantage of

this unique opportunity to show your support of and connection to the CYC. The flag looks

absolutely superb when flown beneath your American flag on your lakeside flagpole, or hung

off your deck, or even flying from your watercraft! See the photos and article on the Merchan-

dise page of our website.

Sponsors Still Needed

CYC is always pleased to accept new sponsors, so if you have the means and the desire to

help us promote our lake interests, do not hesitate to contact the commodore to discuss be-

coming a sponsor. Note the “Thank You to All of Our Sponsors” section on the mailing la-

bel page for further information. We would be delighted to have you sponsor one or more

of our newsletters ($100 for one issue, $200 for two issues, or $300 per year for all three is-

sues), and we now have available sub sponsorships for our annual Concert in Horseshoe

Cove (our major fundraiser for the year) at just $300 per year. Contact the commodore at

[email protected] or 207-395-5040 for further information or to make appropri-

ate arrangements. Your support allows us to continue to focus on lake preservation and the

care and maintenance of our beloved Ladies Delight Island Lighthouse, and the CYC exec-

utive committee recently voted to extend a complimentary annual membership to all spon-

sors as well.

Membership Forms

Note that membership forms are available in our newsletters, on our website, and in our

brochures. It is important for our records that all new and renewed memberships come to

us via one of these forms or on the postcard that we send out early each year. And for your

address, use only your permanent mailing address where we can send mail to you all year.

And please print on all forms!

Lake Memories: Cobbosseecontee: 1953

The roar of the runners, a flapping, giant canvas sail,

blasts of cold, windy air, and my father grinning from ear

to ear behind me as we flew along the lake in one of his

hand-made iceboats. It was no fun and I was always ter-

rorized. Crouched down, wrapped in an embryotic ball, I

held my breath in hopes we didn’t jump cracks of open,

black water on this trip!

My dad grew up on a large dairy farm on what is now

the Augusta Airport. And, even though he told stories of

tobogganing down Winthrop Hill, stashing his sled and

tromping off across the river to Cony High School as a

teenager, his heart was always on Cobbosseecontee. In

summers, he took the trolley from Augusta to where he

could walk across the bridge with his friends to Island

Park dance hall. He reveled us with tales of his antics on

Ladies Delight and around the lake in the summertime.

But, he lived for the winters when, as an adult, he

could assemble one of his three iceboats, drag it all, plus

his two reticent children, down the hill to the lake for the

ride of their life on the ice. The colder and the windier the

better!

My dad lived by and loved the lake until he died at 84.

After he died, I walked across the February frozen lake,

sun shining, wind blasting, and I could feel his spirit, his

unending joy and love of the lake. I could feel that grin of

delight everywhere.

Gannett Donation

CYC has received from Genie Gannett Quist, a set of plastic films used by the Kennebec Journal

to print charts of Lake Cobbosseecontee. These films are a 1974 update based on an original 1938

lake chart drawn by M.C Linscott and printed by the Kennebec Journal. According to David Quist

in the note that accompanied them, “Genie discovered these films while cleaning out a closet in

Florida. John Gannett probably had these made at the Kennebec Journal print shop some time ago.

Genie wants to donate them to the yacht club. Not sure if they are of any value to the club, but they

are in your hands now.”

The CYC executive committee would like to express its thanks to Genie and Dave for giving us

the chance to see to it that these historic films are able to be preserved. Recently at our final meeting

of 2016, the committee determined that the best placement of the films for safe preservation would

be with the Kennebec Historical Society located on Winthrop Street in Augusta. They will soon be

delivered to the KHS along with the request that, if in the future the CYC would like to have copies

of the chart printed, it would be allowed to do so.

Again, thank you Genie, and best of luck on the development of the Gannett House Project!
