October 2018 Abner Montessori School 1 We have had an amazing whirlwind trip around the globe in 31 days. We began with North America and an introduction to Native Americans. Our class participated in the preparation of making cornbread, strung beads for necklaces and listened to stories & music about the lives of the Native American Indians. Our tour to the rainforest in South America was fascinating. A special guest taught us about the animals that live in the four areas of the forest. We then began to learn about Egypt. We enjoyed palace bread and liminada for a snack before creating our own Egyptian houses. We learned homes in Egypt showcase murals of family travels, pets, and quotes. As we explored Europe, we tasted homemade apple cake and studied Matryoshka dolls which both come from Russia. Our continued journey took us to Asia where we made Naan bread, observed a beautiful saree (which are traditionally worn by Indian women) and painted elephants. A guest speaker visited to tell us about Australia. In his poster presentation, he showed many facts about the culture and prepared a snack for us to try called Vegemite. This cracker spread tasted salty. Then we tasted a bitter chocolate from Australia. Our last destination was the coldest continent, Antarctica. We talked about the cold temperature in Antarctica as we tasted snow cones and made polar bears. This month has been filled with many wonderful learning opportunities from around the world. Our Primary classrooms celebrated Cultural Month by exploring cultures from around the world.

Both classes had a particular focus on a culture from our continent, Native Americans. Students had fun learning about different folktales from varying tribes

across the country and learning about their history. Students expanded their universe in our science lessons by starting our section on the Solar System. Students began to learn the names of the planets and other astrological entities. In our language lessons, students

practiced letter sounds. Several of our students have discovered they love to read to others, so they take time to read to their friends in the classroom and even our staff.Several pieces of a practical life shelves took on a fall theme. Students made fall trees with red, orange, and yellow leaves using q-tip painting.

For Halloween, our students got to help carve a jack-o-lantern. Students took turns scooping out the seeds and insides of the pumpkin.

This month in the Elementary House, our students have been studying different cultures from around the world. Students to choose a specific biome and continent where the student explores plants, animals, people, food, clothing, and more. Other students have also been exploring the specific land and water forms around the world. They have been amazed by God’s creation.

In math, some Lower Elementary students are moving into the abstract algorithms of addition and subtraction with exchange and borrowing. Upper Elementary

students have moved into their fraction unit and are exploring factors and multiples to manipulate and find equivalent fractions.

In language, some Lower Elementary students are continuing their study of the function of words which includes articles, adjectives, nouns, and verbs. Upper Elementary students have begun their

sentence analysis unit which includes studying the subject, predicate, direct object, and more.

In history, Upper Elementary is starting to learn about the explorers of North America and its colonization.

A few of the Upper Elementary students have begun a bible study called "Bible Truths." The first unit is about the development of Christlike character. Students have learned why and how to be more Christlike and where to start. Some of the Bible verses these students have read are John 1: 1-18 and Luke 1:1-4.

As a class, we are continuing to work on community building. Students have been working and learning collaboratively, respecting the classroom community and building leadership roles! We will begin our community meetings soon, which are entirely student-led.
