Campus News We would like to thank our PTO and parent volunteers for helping to make Homecoming so memorable for our

students. The mums created, built, and distributed by our PTO help make our Homecoming Week one of our wonderful

traditions. The amount of mums worn by our students throughout the day Friday continued to build community within our

campus. We are excited to report that we had a huge increase in the number of students attending the Homecoming

Dance as well. We had an increase of well over 33% in ticket sales and students who attended last Saturday Night. Our

PTO is always instrumental in our concession sales, and our volunteers excelled during the Homecoming Game against

Austin High.

As we head to October, our teachers enjoy this opportunity to request allocations directly from our PTO. While our

teachers receive a generous gift of $100 in August for class preparations, they also have the chance to request

allocations for specific projects or items to be used for the benefit of their students. Some of these items over the years

include the Language Lab, new furniture for collaborative spaces in the libraries, and numerous individual class items like

• Chairs for Mobility/Collaboration in Digital Graphics

• Stethoscopes & Thermometers for CTE

• Clip on Turners and 6 Sting Capos for Guitar class

• iPad Charging stations

• Multi-teacher account for Digital Story telling for Social Studies

• Telescope for Science

• Radio kits

• Mallets, handles, and horn mouth pieces for Band

• Social Emotional Learning posters

• Classroom calculators

• Folding tables for AP testing & College fair

We would like to invite you to the State of the District presented by Dr. Leonard on October 19th from 12-1pm in the PAC

Recital Hall. This is always an excellent way to learn about our district and campus. I will also be available for our Meet

with The Principal beginning at 11:30 am.

Steve Ramsey, Principal

Hard to believe, it’s already been a month since school started!

We loved seeing many parents at Back - To - School (BTS) night. The Mums

team did a great job in getting everyone suited up for the early homecoming.

Football season is off to a good start and the concessions team is staying

busy. The No Hassle Fundraiser is a year - round campaign, and we welcome

your donations. Thanks to everyone who has already contributed and

congratulations to the Selsky Family lucky winner of the NHF raffle package!

I hope to see many of you at the special meeting on Friday, Oct 19th.

Principal Steve Ramsey will host a Q&A at 11:30AM and Dr. Tom Leonard will be

presenting the State of the District at noon.

Warmly,

Shalini Komarla

Did you know?

1. Difference between PTO and EEF: Eanes Education Foundation (EEF) funds teachers; PTO funds classroom supplies and equipment for teachers, campus upgrades as well as sponsor teacher appreciation events each month. PTO also provides volunteers to help with different areas in school, including Staff Appreciation, library and special projects.

2. Concessions: PTO manages all concessions at WHS. 50% of the net proceeds go to PTO and the other 50% are divided among the many clubs and teams that work concessions throughout the year. When you buy concessions at the games, you are also supporting the students and staff at WHS!

PeaceBox is coming to Westlake! As the founder, Owner & President of PeaceBox: Mindfulness on the Move,

Stacy Thrash offers mindfulness training for private individuals as well as groups, corporations and 1/2-day, full-day and longer

specialized retreats. We are so lucky to have Stacy coming to talk to all 9th graders during the PSAT. We could all use some

education on how to be more present and the importance of our breath.

Another huge THANK YOU! to the PTO for getting us connected to the PeaceBox last year. If you have any questions, please

email Katie Bryant, [email protected]

We have two Masters level Clinical Interns from UT joining us this year to help with all our student support needs.

Mr. Ramsey, Coach Lucero, and Mrs. Bryant are continuing to lead the way with Challenge Success initiatives. We have lots of

teachers and staff involved as well. We are looking more 9th and 10th grade students to get involved. If you think your child

would want to be involved, have them email Katie Bryant, [email protected]

Concessions

Hello, and Happy Fall! Westlake High School PTO is getting a jump on things for Concessions

this football season. We wanted to reach out to offer your WHS club or group an opportunity to

work Concessions for our Fall Football games AND GET PAID FOR IT! But, first, we will give

you some background and important information.

How does Football Concessions work? PTO operates three concession stands during home football games - Home, Visitor and The Pit. PTO needs

volunteers for several jobs each football game. Groups such as yours provide volunteers on the day of the game to

prepare the concession stands before the game (Load In job), and/or work in one or more of the concessions

stands before and during the game (Concession jobs). Each job needs a different amount of workers, so your group

will be matched to the job that best meets the number of volunteers you can provide.

How will we get paid? PTO’s Volunteer Chair logs the work hours for each volunteer provided by each group. The Chair submits all

volunteer hours for each group to the PTO Treasurer at the end of the football season. When the school year is

completely over, the PTO calculates its Net Profit for Concessions for that school year. PTO then splits the Net

Profit between itself and the groups that provided volunteers for load in and concession jobs. Workers are paid

for each hour worked and payment is issued in August before school begins in the fall. To be clear, if your group volunteers for a job during the Fall 2018 football season, it will not get paid for that job until August 2019 because

PTO cannot pay out until our Concessions books are closed after the entire school year. The nice thing about this

system is that it only matters how many volunteers you bring to the table and how many hours they work. It does

not matter if you work the biggest or the smallest game. All work earns the same per hour.

Can we get service hours for our students? Yes, but then your group will not get paid for the hours worked by the students. Your student volunteers must

decide if they want service hours or monetary compensation. They cannot double dip! If your students want the

service hours instead, please let them know that they need to come to the Concession stand with their own forms

in hand because PTO does not have any forms.

How will we sign up? Contact Kelli Brown for more information. [email protected] All volunteer spots are filled on a first come-first serve basis.

Thank you,

KB

DEPRESSION: AN EPIDEMIC IN EDUCATION AND WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT

OCTOBER 9 | 6PM | LAURA’S LIBRARY

Depression rates in high school and college students have risen sharply in the past fifty years. Young people who

suffer from depression often lose interest in their schoolwork, while poor performance in school is often a driver of

depression. While often unseen and unnoticed, depression is an epidemic in education. Antonio Buehler of Abrome

Community Partners Community Partner Spotlight

Danielle Wills and her family of tumblers have been flipping and cheerleading across Westlake for nearly 20

years. Danielle and her husband Rob moved into the Eanes school district back in 1998, with their daughters

Megan and Madison, who were soon followed by twins Jake and Kaitlyn. All four went through Cedar Creek

Elementary, Hill Country Middle School, then Westlake High School, where Jake and Kaitlyn are currently

Juniors. The siblings are known for their tumbling and cheerleading skills, with all three sisters competing at

the national level on All Star cheer teams, as well as on the WHS Cheer Squad. Jake has been a member of the

push-up squad since his Freshman year where he can be spotted doing insane tumbling passes on the

sidelines.

The concept for Tumble Tech grew out of Danielle’s observation that Austin needed more gym space for recreational as well as

competitive power tumbling and trampoline training, along with other free-movement activities such as Parkour and Free-

Running. Tumble Tech started in 2015 in leased space at the back of WACC, where it continues to operate today. In addition,

Tumble Tech built a full time facility in 2017 on Sports Row in Cedar Park, where its competitive team trains.

Danielle is a hands-on owner, and is at the gym every day. The “Wills Squad” can be found at the gym a lot of the time as well,

tumbling and flipping, coaching, and supporting the family business.
