Interview with SOUMYAJIT MITRA [ AIR-5, GATE 2015]
1. How was the GATE Paper this year? Give us some insight into the GATE 2015 Question Paper.
SOUMYAJIT MITRA: The GATE Paper for 2015 was fairly standard and well-rounded one. Basic depth and
theoretical knowledge of the subjects might have been sufficient to solve the questions, which were mostly
conceptual and from a broad yet not obscure range of topics. There were two divisions-General Aptitude and
Electrical engineering. The aptitude comprised of 10 questions and the other part comprised of both one mark and
two marks questions. The two marks questions were mostly numerical type.

How to Crack GATE 2016
At this juncture GATE aspirants are busy preparing for the exam and making handy capsule notes which can be referred to a daybefore the exam. To minimize the exam pressure, here are some preparation strategies which will surely help candidates to sailthrough the exam.
Set your goals Different goals have differentstrategies and hence it is important to define yourgoals in terms of the rank you want to achieve. If youare aspiring for the top IITs or PSUs, you will need arank of less than 1000 and hence you will have toprepare thoroughly on all topics. On the other hand, ifyour goal is to just qualify, then you can afford toleave out 2-3 topics from your preparation.
Take a diagnostic test Before starting yourpreparation it is important to know your initial level ofcompetence. An analysis of your performance inthis test will tell you your strengths and areas whereimprovement is required. Based on this, you candevice your preparation strategy.
Build your concepts GATE is an exam whichtests concepts as well as their applicationthoroughly. Join a good classroom program or aonline tutoring program which will help strengthenyour concepts.
Practice, Practice, Practice Solve all types ofquestions you come across in various books and beprepared on all question patterns
Familiarize with formula Engineering subjectshave a lot of formulae, which more often than nothave to be memorized. Noting down all formulae asand when you finish each topic or referring to acollection of formulae will help you get familiar.
Focus on high-return topics Engineering
Mathematics and General Ability constitute 30% ofthe total marks and are relatively easier to score in.You could look at some online lectures to prepare inthese topics.
Appear in a Mock Test Series Take up a mock testseries as it will help you adapt to the online pattern. Itwill also help you assess your preparation and basedon the test analyze you can focus on areas that youare weak in and can prepare those areas. It will alsogive you exhaustive practice on different types ofquestions
Make your own exam strategy Based on yourexperiments in the mock test series, you can finetune your own exam strategy. Some people like tostart solving a paper from the first question, while
some people like to glance through the entire paperand start answering questions from their areas ofstrength.
Relax before the exam One day before GATE,stop thinking about it. Watch a movie or anything thatrelaxes you. Appear for the exam with a fresh mind.
Remember that GATE is not the end of the world Put your best foot forward and do not worryexcessively about the results.

2. What do you think is the reason of your success in GATE Exam?
SOUMYAJIT MITRA: It is hard to quantify the reasons for such an unprecedented AIR and GATE score, even with the extensive
preparation and training I had undergone. However, one thing shines out amidst the other factors, keeping a cool head on you. There
is absolutely no reason one should not be able to translate all their hard work into success if they can avoid silly mistakes which are
usually borne of a restless mind.
3. What was your strategy in preparing for the GATE Exam? Which month did you start preparation and how did you go about
preparing for GATE Exam?
SOUMYAJIT MITRA : For achieving a good GATE score, you need to have your basics clear .I had planned to go through all the theory
taught to us in the intermittent vacations since the third year and had allotted the last few months to rigorous practice sessions
referencing past question papers and taking as many mock tests as possible. Since the start of the fourth year, I started redoing the
portions I was unsure about and concentrated purely on problem-oriented studying. I kept on constantly evaluating myself and
focusing on my weak zone and trying to convert it into my strong one. I also kept on revising the topics so that I could remember all the
formulas.
This section will have questions from General Ability and Mathematics (together these sections contribute 30 percent marks in GATE).Send in your answers with explanation to [email protected] the first 5 correct entries will win a free e-shopping voucher.
